"LOVELY"!!!I I'm 71, still ride and do all my own maintenance. What I like about your videos is you tell what size tool to use and torque settings so I don't have to guess at it. I also like the fact that you are very detailed in your procedures, Thanks for all your great videos!!!!!
Just dubbing around today and looking at some of your older videos. They are all so helpful and nicely detailed bit your style is what really works. No intimidation what so ever. Your style also allows a quick learn of the topics. As always great camera work.As always thanks so much.
Just wanted to tell you that this American guy from Illinois finds your videos the best on the internet and you definitely get 5 stars for the shirt with Johnny Cash on it... God bless you sir
I always refer back to your video(s) when winterizing my FLSTF. You have taught me much over the years. Thanks again and hope your family is safe and well 😎👍
WOW! ... just got my first Harley (1994 FLSTN - 22000 miles on) and I have been searching for videos to be very clear for people like me who are wanting to work on their own bikes ... Mate!!! you are the MAN! this is awesome video ... so darn clear ... I'm so happy I found your channel and now subscribed ... God Bless you man! thank you for this valuable lesson ... now I will check all of them ... take care,
Hey from SC., USA. Hoping to send you a super thanks when I have saved money by watching your videos. I have searched through all related videos that I thought would help me with my current project on my 1998 Fatboy. I watched a few videos from other RUclips creators but I sincerely believe I have more confidence in the videos you produce. I may have overlooked a video you have done that shows how to replace the primary chain and all involved, etc. I got discouraged while watching the other videos because I knew I didn’t have the specific tools to accomplish certain task. But I remember in some of your videos you were able to bypass specialty tools by creating your own or passing on ideas about how to get the job done for novices. I commend you for the thoughtfulness that the common person with the information you provide is able to do a job themselves instead of forking all the money they could better use for building up their own tool supply instead of paying the dealerships. If you have a video on replacing the primary chain would you direct me to it. I am sorry to bother you if I overlooked it. Rusty
Appreciate the videos, they are very helpful and the lady behind the camera does an excellent job showing closeups. Keep them coming Delboy, big help your vids.
Another enjoyable video. I appreciate the little comments you make along the way like looking for the small white chips in the primary oil and the use of anti-seize on the spark plugs and how the crush washers work. When I change plugs, and I do it often, I always set them to the minimum gap. I know that in a very short time the gap will open up. Also, the suggestion to use new plugs is a great one. I actually change to new plugs any time I remove a plug or reach a 10K service interval. I really enjoy and appreciate how you use the video camera to focus in on the subject area. The picture is well lit and easy to see. Audio level is great too. Thanks.
My word, Tom, thank you so much for your kind, and generous, feedback my friend... we're glad that you find the videos so useful and enjoyable! Thank you for your support, keep in touch, and good luck with your projects!
Once more, a big thankyou! I have been hearing some terrible noise when I start my softail so I will be adjusting the clutch and the primary chain tomorrow.
Thanks for these really good service videos, I've wrenched on my cars and motorcycles for over 40 years and your'e spot on with your details and techniques. As I haven't had a newer Harley Davidson since 1984 and I intend to do maintenance on my 2016 Softail Deluxe, I thought I better refresh my skills by looking at RUclips Videos, glad I found yours! I promise I won't pull on the ratchet handle like a gibbon, (love that), I'll palm it instead!
Ha ha, just a turn of phrase aye... Glad you found the videos useful, and its great to be able to help out a fellow mechanic, drop us a line if you get stuck, and have fun with it buddy.. take care and thanks again.. Del.
another great informative video guys, as I have said before its guys like you that give guys like myself and many others out here the confidence to take on servicing and projects, keep up the great work guys, and thank you for everything.
Hi folks. Apart from noting the location & reason for the different length cover screws - another superb job! Am now going outside to tell this dozy song thrush that he's singing ever so slightly flat. It's a tough life eh? : ) x
Cool vid my brother...very nice Fatboy...I had a 2001 several years ago that was blue and looked just like yours...probably not as nice as yours though....thanks again for the informative vid...say hi to the little lady...take care my friend
I put auto-adjuster tensioner on my 03' fxdx Dyna, an I'm changing it back to manual adjustment because auto wants to ratchet tight an won't release tension an engine getting clunking noise on startup! I'm with you trying to get all old oils from motor. I heard a solftail method. (It takes 22 RPMs to cycle oil. Add new oil, then rotate motor 11 RPMs(that gets fresh oil too filter), now change to new filter! Then remove inlet oil tube on soft tail oil tank (tube closest to outside)! Put oil capture container on oil inlet tube you just removed! Then rotate motor 11 rpms to remove old oil now from filter to oil tank! Reconnect oil tank inlet tube! An your done, an have removed old oil from system! Cool!
Hi Tim, good call on the tensioner, the automatic ones are a problem and it doesn't take 5mins to adjust it once every 5k (and often you don't even need to!)... and am not sure if you watched my video and were reading it back to me, but we did actually make a detailed video of the Softail oil purge process exactly as you describe! It's something the dealers won't do unless you ask them to, but it does work... swop the oil, stick the return tube in a jug, 10 pumps up to the filter, change the filter, and then 10 pumps and it'll run clear... then chuck the hose back in the tank and top up... do this and you'll also find your oil stays cleaner for longer... good call mate!
Another fantastic video. Copper slip the plugs - I do the too. Good to see it. I liked the bent wire gauge you made for primary chain adjustment in a different video. Seems a bit more accurate (maybe I a bit fussy like that). Palm the plugs - agin 👍. You are a total star. 👍🤜
So good to see you working on the bike, true professional, I liked Ops comment about having to pay as well for the oil purge, she's on the ball.zLovely day here yesterday, had a good ride out on Freddie, but jeez there are some idiots out there, so far I've nearly been collected twice on a roundabout & yesterday a work can came round a bend on the wrong side, never realised how nimble the Softail is. Have a great weekend both 👍😎
Penny keeps the books balanced, so she know the first consideration on all things... "what it costs"..! lol Ride safe buddy, they're always out there.!
I replaced shoe on my tensioner but wasnt happy with the adjustment after. It bothered me that i had to push hard on the chain to get 5/8”. After watching this vid,i got my scale and checked again. A loose chain is said to be better than tight.
I watched #4 from the Softail playlist about 5 times. I am a novice, 69 yo and own a 1998 Fatboy. You videos are helping me to understand that I don’t need to be intimidated by working on my HD. Ty very much. I followed the steps in #4. and while it took both hands to rotate the rear tire and move the chain around to check the tension (plugs out and in 5th gear) there was no difference in the fluctuations but by 1/8 “ on at least 6 check points. The measurements went from 3 1/2” to 4 1/8” approximately. A few were maybe 3 1/2 to 3 7/8” close to 4”. My questions is: How did you get the wheel to turn with one hand? Should I adjust the 3 1/2” to 3 7/8 to 4 1/8 since in my limited knowledge would be the tightest point(the measurements were equally divided between the two main deflection measurements). Mileage is just over 28, 100 miles. Thanks to you I completed my first 3 hole oil change with confidence.
That's great to hear that our videos can help you out! I would say don't overthink that measurement too much, you are given a little scope for flexibility there, it's not a critical measurement... just there to ensure the chain doesn't slap against the casing, or more importantly isn't running too tight (which will stress bearings)... I'd say with what you've done, you have it adequately covered. Regarding turning the engine over with the wheel, it will take a little bit of a heave, but as long as your brake disc isn't binding and the plugs are out, it should be do-able! Good luck with it, and thank you for your kind feedback!
I drained nearly 52 ounces of oil from the primary and clutch change. My book says only 26-36 ounces to reach the bottom of the clutch. It was 36. I haven’t added oil. I took your advise that too much or too little can cause issues. I checked it routinely as you demonstrated, but the level never seemed to come above the clutch bottom. How could there be 52 oz and not cause the issues you discussed in #4? You said to put back in what you drain out. But that’s if it is done correctly each time and it’s not loosing oil. Did I do the right thing by filling it up to the bottom of the clutch with 36 oz and not what I drained out which was 52 oz.
Yes you did, my advice to 'fill the same as you drained out' requires that you first check the level is correct before you drain it out... natually, if the level is wrong before draining then don't copy it.!! Once again, and as ive said to many viewers who question primary oil quantities:- Make sure you fill the level to the bottom of the clutch plates as laid out in the manual, regardless of how many ounces it is !
Of course you do... so get it done buddy.. you dont spend all those hours on the road and living in hotels to go without aye... have the things that make you happy, for there is no reason otherwise to toil at a wheel that makes you unhappy..!
They are one of the only brands to keep a permanent test ride policy, they allays have Demos, drop in any dealer and take a "Dyna Lowrider S" out for a ride.... you'll never be the same again.. it'll make your Z Thou feel like a moped.. it may not be as fast... but like a Bengal Tiger against a Gazelle..... its a Brutal experience you wont forget..!
Very much appreciate your teaching, especially the real world, common sense points. I have an 05 Electra Glide classic ( carbureted with 95 in jugs, stock). Will the processes for this series (except oil purge) work for my bike? Again, thanks for sharing your knowledge & experience! William
Yes, the rest is the same, the touring engines are basically the same as the Dyna, do check your torque settings though as you have sump plugs under the engine, different to the Softail...!
should it not be to tighten the chain as it grows in the length by working, instead of loosen it? how does it comes that it was too tight? thanks for the great vid
It was probably adjusted by someone who did not bother to spin it round and find the tightest spot... they probably adjusted it in the loosest spot, then when you roll round to the tight spot, it ends up too tight... also, this chain does not wear like a final drive chain and become 'longer', that would take, maybe, 100,000 miles, or more!
Love your channel, I used your vid to help w/adjusting my clutch & clutch cable (I do have the service Manual) & it was very easy to do. My primary chain hasn't been adjusted in quite a while. I noticed you have the bike up on a jack & stated you put it in 4th gear to rotate to tight spot in chain. My Service Manual(PN#99482-03 Page# 1-25) does not say to do that, all it says is have bike upright & level @ tightest point in chain. This is why your vids are so important you describe important points that the Manual leaves out. Thanks for doing what you do, it's very cool. P.S. I 'am going to look @ your vid on changing the Brake fluid next & read the manual to, to see how close it is w/you.
Thanks for the feedback James, im glad the videos can help you out, we pitch them so they make sense to anyone.. and always happy to help if thing's are not clear.. .Enjoy the fluid change, and have a good week mate.. del.
In your #1 gear box oil change video for Softails you mentioned that the drain plug was under the bike. I have looked between the shocks and looked for any kind of stud that would resemble a drain plug for the gear box. At this point I have not found it. I ended up draining the gear box from the drain screw shown in my manual. I don’t want to do that again. It made a mess. I watched #1 again and rechecked. Can you help me find it? Ty Rusty
Most of this is Irrelevant to me,BUT is always a pleasure to watch a DIY done so well. Should i swap to a Harley in the future FatBoy or Street Bob, it will very much become relevant. Nice one (again)
Same basic principles Sam, but the specs will be slightly different here and there so get a genuine HD manual to make sure you get all the settings right..!
Hello from quarantine Southern California, excellent channel by the way I would like to know what brand of T-handle torque wrench is that you are using please?
Hi David, welcome aboard Sir, the torque wrench item is this one.. www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/Wiha-Torque-T-Handle-ST-Plus-TorqueVario-Set-29234?search=Torque%20Vario%20ST&description=true Once the lockdown is a little less intense or even lifted, they will be able to ship to you if you cannot find a local supplier.. Take care and keep safe.. Del.
gotta say mate, I'm really loving these videos. Can't wait for the forks one, mine need doing some weekend soon. Question: if I remember from last time I had that plate off, the bolts were different lengths. Were yours all the same? What year is your bike? Mine's a 2000.
Two long ones, two short ones buddy... same as yours..! Gonna do forks in a few weeks as i need to get a few other things done first... but the final engine oil change video will be up for tomorrow..
Hey brother Del and Penny, hope is well! great video, as always. Another one I used to my benefit, for that, I thank you !Just was curious, why they made my 15 th anniv and yours, which is the same year(2005).one with the huge gold badge and yours, with just a decal??
Hi buddy.. most welcome on the video... im glad it could help ypou... With the 15th Anniversary model Fatboys.. there were two, mine was the regular "cooking" version, just a regular ordinary fatboy, accept the tank decal that has 15th Anniv depicted on it... and yours, the "Gold Badged" model was the true limited edition bike... it has the gold plated logo, (apparently real 24 carat gold plated), and the motor is 1550cc, and not the regular 1450... they didn't sell many, so if you have one, look after i buddy.!
Moonfleet41 thank you for the response,my good man. your mechanical skills are overwhelming!! I admire EVERYTHING you do! you are accurate and percise, in all and everything you accomplish. God blessed you, when he created you, sir. and I have to thank pit -stop-penny, for her remarkable camera skills, very well set up, you guys have mate. you both are a well oiled machine, working in unison!!! I thank you gain. PS..the torque setting for the primary adjustment bolt is 25 ft lbs, good day! PS..when in New York, hit me up at RCASINOVER@GMAIL.COM.
another great video. I performed a clutch adjustment on a 1997 Springer Bad Boy and it certainly improved things but I noticed the bike is very difficult to get into neutral. There are times where it slips into N with no effort, you can feel a nice click and there are times where it just will not go. I also have a 2023 fatboy that does exact same thing. In fact, the fatboy is worst than the springer and wondering what this is all about. The new fatboy I would think would be less of an issue straight from the factory and being new and all but if you have any thoughts on why this happens and how to fix, would appreciate.
I can't diagnose this kind of thing without seeing it, but immediate thoughts, on the new bike, let it run in first, it's well known that Harley's take a good 10k miles to properly loosen up and everything be fluid... and with the older bike, perhaps change the primary oil for a fully synthetic if the plates are sticking together that can cause such problems.
Hi Del. I love your videos, and these how to types are my favourite. I use them for reference all the time. I can't help thinking that you are avoiding the project bike for some reason though. Is all ok in that area? Did you fall out with the painter or something?
Ha ha, of course not, the project bike is not all we do.. i have to service and maintain our own bikes, we also just went through a major garage refit, and it all takes time.. as soon as ive done the last video (the main oil change) this week, ill be back on the build..
Hi Del, first time viewer. Very informative. I have an 07 Softail with just the dimple on the case. Absolutely admirable that you mentioned, this style has an auto tensioner. My HD has 38k miles; is it time for a new tensioner? Thank you brother.
Thank you and welcome aboard Sir, the intention the factory had in making the auto tensioner was that it was maintenance free forever, but of course we all know there's no such thing... check your primary oil for signs of debris, there will always be some and it should be a dull grey colour if it's done 5k miles, but any big bits in it could indicate that a proper internal look inside the primary is overdue... bit of a pain I know, but better than a tensioner breaking up and causing more problems! 38k isn't high mileage, so just keep an eye on your oil.
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks for your feedback. I will be sure to tell my friends about your videos. Your the kind of mate we need to run the U.S. interested? LOL 😉
If the chain is too tight will it make a whining noise? Just picked up a 96 road king. I’m getting a whining noise. Almost sounds like it has a charger on the motor. Pretty sure it’s coming from the primary. I’ve read that if it’s too tight it will make a whining noise
Yes it will buddy.. and if it is tight enough to be screaming at you then thats all bad..it can do expensive damage, DON'T run the motor again until you've checked it..! drop the inspection cover off and see how tight it is, if you roll the wheel round in gear with the plugs out, you'll get a better idea.. and naturally check the oil level too..!
@@Moonfleet41 thank you for the response. Previous owner said cam bearing was replaced so it shouldn’t be that. I would think bearings would make more of a grinding/marble sound upon failure not whirring/whining like a supercharger. I’ll give it a look and see what I find. Best of luck on your recovery as well brother.
Sorry Robin, i don't have that to memory and i don't have a manual nearby... but you will find it in your service manual in the back pages with the alphabetical torque list..!

Nice one Del and Penny, another great video . Good detail, this will help lots of people.
Great video. I once dropped the cover plate bolt in the primary and greatfully got it out with a telescopic magnet.

Very helpful info for my 2000 flstc thanks. Started noticing a tapping from the primary case this explains things for me.
Yes!! Always a small dab of copper anti seize!! On any engine with spark plugs!!
Thanks again!

Thanks D & P x
Great Video, I use this on my 1997 Road King, Thanks
Most welcome. Glad it helped!
Your the Edd China of Bikes, so knowledgeable
Thanks Jimmy.. very kind.
smashing stuff...been away from home since March...gonna be hitting up my softail...also an '05 for some fluid changes
Good luck with it Pete, thanks for watching buddy.
I can't wait for that oil change! I've always wanted to know how they purge the oil. Never seen it done.
Hi can you do a video of changing cam chain tensioners. As always learnt such a lot from your work. Cheers Tim.
Thanks for the video, what are the torc specs for the tensioner?
Hi Del Great video as always can you tell me the torque setting for the primary chain adjustment please as I didn’t catch it in the video thank you
Great video! Is the angle of the ruler you have there affecting the actual distance measured?
hi d and p picking up little tips and tricks along all these great vids you do, garage looks great brill stuff del and penny keep em coming m8. kenny
Thanks Kenny, glad you enjoy mate !
Yet another great video Del , I want a Harley soft tail now 😎👏
Of course you do... so get it done buddy.. you dont spend all those hours on the road and living in hotels to go without aye... have the things that make you happy, for there is no reason otherwise to toil at a wheel that makes you unhappy..!
great little mini series Del I'm tempted to try a Harley next want a complete change from my z1000sx
Si, great content!
very knowledgeable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank buddy, appreciate all your kind comments.
[P] Great video Del . Nice tips using copper slip on the plugs . It is a must on taper seat plugs like the old Ford crossflow motor.
Regards Pete.
should it not be to tighten the chain as it grows in the length by working, instead of loosen it? how does it comes that it was too tight? thanks for the great vid
Do have a video on adjusting richness on a carbonated 05 HD Softail?
Ty Rusty
I have an 05 softtail vtwin with the chain driven twin cams... do you have a video for inspecting or adjusting video for the cams??
Very professional..as always. Thanks. The other measure is cm?
Yeah, ruler gives both.
Most of this is Irrelevant to me,BUT is always a pleasure to watch a DIY done so well. Should i swap to a Harley in the future FatBoy or Street Bob, it will very much become relevant. Nice one (again)
Buy a fatboy mate not a fwtbob, fatboys are more fancier there heavier but much more on the eye,
I just gotta question the interpretation of play when measuring at such an angle unless it is specified to measure at such angle.
How many hours does it take to change a primary chain tensioner on a 1991 heritage softball classic?
great series...would this be the same on a 96 dyna except for removing the shifter peg to get the cover off
Same basic principles Sam, but the specs will be slightly different here and there so get a genuine HD manual to make sure you get all the settings right..!
Another excellent episode, mate. Man, that's a lovely bike!
Del, How do you feel about Dielectric grease on the plugs?
Hello from quarantine Southern California, excellent channel by the way I would like to know what brand of T-handle torque wrench is that you are using please?
Hi David, welcome aboard Sir, the torque wrench item is this one..

Once the lockdown is a little less intense or even lifted, they will be able to ship to you if you cannot find a local supplier.. Take care and keep safe.. Del.
Love my 07 fxst
gotta say mate, I'm really loving these videos.
Can't wait for the forks one, mine need doing some weekend soon.
Question:
if I remember from last time I had that plate off, the bolts were different lengths.
Bravo complimenti ciao.
another great video.
Moonfleet41 that's great news. I love that new garage setup. Keep her lit Del! I love the channel.
Your the kind of mate we need to run the U.S. interested? LOL 😉
@@nonyabyzns5867 Damn it, if you can get me a green card, I'm in! (but only if you can chuck in a vintage 1911 with an open carry ticket)...
The steel ruler you are using is a pica gauge. Are you in the Printing profession also? Great videos brother! Keep them coming 👍
Did you say what the torque setting for the tensioner nut is? You said you were going to but I didn't hear it.
Can't remember off the top of my head, and I don't have a manual to hand buddy - but it's in there on the torque settings guide...
Hi Del could you tell me the torque setting for the primary chain on the Harley fat boy as I didn’t quite catch it in the video thank you
Sorry Robin, i don't have that to memory and i don't have a manual nearby... but you will find it in your service manual in the back pages with the alphabetical torque list..!
Don't you have to rotate the rear wheel to check for slack points on the primary chain
Yes you do, just didn't film it...
