Replaced my adjuster with a baker manual “attitude adjuster” after a 2000 mile trip, the stock auto adjuster quite literally ruined the transmission due to over-tightening…. The main bearing that goes into the transmission, yes the one that’s pressed in, that hole was so sloppy, when the mechanic went to install a new one, the bearing simply fell out…. Case had to be completely replaced. Cool thing is, ever since I installed the baker adjuster…. Only had to actually adjust it twice since.
I'm so glad you spoke about using proper processes where manual work is required for fitment. People with no background in machining have no real idea of the importance of true centring & squareness of holes, or the concepts of concentricity and eccentricity of rotating parts, among many other things that are critical to functionality, reliability and longevity of service. You can't just be sticking it in the vise and taking to it with a power tool! Love your work mate, you are a true professional. Cheers from Oz. 👍👍🇦🇺
He had that opportunity = he had 3 beers, & a shot of Jack! That will change a blokes personality type temporarily but enough to do something like that. Seen it a few times with my own two eyes. Thanks for making this video, it was quite helpful!
I've seen a few videos about what a Harley primary does when running, it's like holy crap! If that chain is a bit loose, it isn't pretty. Why anyone would build a high power engine and run a stock clutch is beyond me. Great video.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,top dog products,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i do alot of double clutchin to get the revs up,,,,,,,,,,,stock junk aluminum baskets get chewed up,,,,,,also shit aluminum friction plates deform with the soft aluminum stock junk baskets..............riding a motorcycle like drivin a volkswagon is for old age mannerisms............i ride hard.......no radio blastin ,,,like the dicks on dressers,,,,,,,i need to hear my engine......................luv hearing the pulse of power..................
I been wrenching for about 50 years on older bikes professionally and as an enthusiast.I recently moved up the chain from shovels and acquired a 08 twin cam .I started watching videos trying to learn a bit about them, your videos are superb both explanatory and hands on . Keep up the good work .They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks , well I think you’re doing a great job on this old dog, lol.
Running a stock basket, stock compensator with a barnett clutch, HD spring on 106 stroker twin cam drag bike with a giant slick. Over 200 passes. Does 10.60 in the 1/4 mile. No problems. But my buddies have exploded multiple M8 stock baskets with built motors at the track on street tires. M8 ones seem to be much weaker.
10:60 is quick for a 106 stroker no doubt however there are plenty of big cube M8 strokers on the street that are much quicker. I believe that’s the people he’s speaking to.
Loved this video. Covered the spectrum and the machinist aspects covered is also enjoyable and respected. When I do a build some day, money permitting, you are gonna be my shop for sure. Thanks Kevin.
George Bryce over at star racing uses stock primary parts except for his own compensator ramp on his 250hp 225tq drag bike 145ci M8 with 40shot of N2O Blue Five-O
Perfect timing. This has been on my to do list. I have 2015 FLTURSE with a mild build 117. Seems the CVO with hydro clutch makes choices limited. I appreciate your videos.
I like my Trask clutch basket and American Prime clutch that you installed on my build. Just like you said extremely nice feel when engaging and disengaging
Hi Kevin Baxter, thank you for sharing this knowledge, gonna price both of these clutch systems at my local independent Harley’s Only mechanical shop, I really appreciate all your guidance on a lot of the upgrades I have done to my 2020 FLTRXS, I have had no problems with and made me love my Harley even more, Be Blessed 🙏🏽, Aloha, Kenneth 🤙🏽
My clutch is still doing fine ( not sure which one you installed on it). Glad I got it. On another topic, have you got in any of the new “Skunk Works” timing covers or derby covers in?
Kevin, i'm an OLD biker my idea of riding is the old US Highways like US rt1 or US rt4 etc i live on the New Hampshire and Maine Coast, so i spend a lot of time riding in small coastal towns in New England and twisty coastal routes with speed limits of 25mph to 35mph with short bursts on interstate roads, but the reason i'm writing is i love the challenge of Slow riding practice, the police rodeo style riding, what type of clutches do you recommend for that type of riding ?
Nice economical setup. I normally use a piloted twist flute reamer with a chamfer stop. So much faster setup time vs drill/mill. Great video as always. Do you normally do the 1 piece inner primary bearing upgrade or just replace with stock 2 piece?
OMG... As usual, your videos are timely and spot on. I installed an American Prime Clutch into my stock basket (new bearings of course) because of one of your videos interviewing Ron. I live in San Diego, so I was close enough to have him do the basket & bearing swap - Used a Silver diaphragm spring. I ended up adding Meuller Power Clutch just a make things even easier for my 70 year old hands..... Flawless!!! Question: Since I have a 2010 96 inch twin cam, Do I even need to think about a Trask Basket? No cams yet....but will probably stop there.... Do I really have enough power to worry about it. I do drive it like I stole.... and there just might be that One Time that I decided to drop that clutch..... But it is only a 96 inch...... your thoughts please.
I have an evolution stage one clutch. a dark horse sprocket. stock tensioner. I put them in after experiencing goofy startup bangs and i was preparing for a cam update. this is on a 103 HO engine. The bike pulls amazingly. SO much better than a stock clutch/compensator. anyone doing a primary upgrade needs to follow the manual for tightening the comp bolt.
Hi , as per usual, great content, very interesting, I, for one have been known to do burnouts, Anybody that is in Europe and has been to St Tropez hog rally back in the early 2000s, for doing a very large burnout, with the sound and film to prove it, On a slightly different question , has anybody ever done a V4 Harley Davidson linked the four cylinders together, As I have read about something from many many years ago, that brough superior built in such a bike, but only was a one off, I am hoping to start working on my DEUCE next month, as it as had three or four previous, some work has been done to it, but it has seen a year or so of neglect, it needs stripping down cleaning and very badly needs of maintenance, something that I am rebuilding my garage to work, so I can do the job in comfort, look forward to your next interesting content, ride and stay safe, from France
Hello Mr Baxter, hope alls good with you, good video on the clutch baskets, I'm disabled and ride a 2017 harley freewheeler, i have been looking at the recluse semi auto clutch and was wondering if their is or can a clutch slave cylinder be made for the least resistance possible for a weak handed rider? Thanks for your time.
What about the stock clutch basket and compensator on a 2007 cvo road king? I'm a touring not a "beat on it" guy but i appreciate the power of the 110. Most of my prior bikes were 95" or 103" with cams and company parts. I've had a stock 05 ultra, stage 3 03' ultra, stage 3 08' ultra and stage 3 09' streetglide. I know the dealer so i buy used bikes with all the goodies. I've gone down to the Road King door the weight reduction as I'm 70 nite. Never an issue using company parts so far. Any thoughts i should be aware of? And thanks for sharing your wisdom. Your insights are treasured.
would you recommend using an aftermarket clutch for a stock bike ? just feels like sometimes with me and the wife on there is slips but it happens rarely
Hi Keven i have a 114 fat bob over here in Australia with a stage two im really interested in your Trask clutch basket configuration and the way you’ve put it together any chance i could purchase one of them off you
Kevin. My 2007 96" Dyna makes 105 on torque and 95.5 HP. I'm in Ohio and like to tour down south. I ride through the mountains loaded down. The bike has the stock clutch with 40000 miles on it. I don't think there's any slippage, but not 100% sure. Would you suggest any upgrades to the clutch?
Kevin, enjoy your great content. Also enjoyed you build and move into your new work space! I know the Twin cam builds a becoming yesterdays news compared to M8 repairs or builds! But up around Northwest Illinois we are finding it hard to find shops or techs that will work on Evo’s or Twin Cams? I just picked up a 2010 FLHTCU with little over 2600 miles! Garage queen and victim of Covid. Thinking about doing a bolt on big bore to 107 or 110, without boring the engine case? I have watched most of your 96 builds and cannot find any builds from 96 up to 110? Maybe this is a topic for content? Since there are plenty of 96 and 103 bikes waiting to be WOKE? I trip over them all over my area? Owners want new bikes in bigger displacement! In my case at 2600 miles the only problem I have found was the original compensator making all kinds of noise and upgraded to a Dark horse compensator after watching your videos! What a world of difference! Going to pull cam chest cover and do run out and see if new cams, oil pump and cam plate are recommended? But would love to see you do some big bore work without the entire machine shop equipment, like guys working out of his garage!
And I'm also getting ready to purchase a complete clutch basket setup I already installed a DD 6-speed Baker Transmission Baker already sent the compensating sprocket where's the kit I am really hoping that you can help me out on the James 131 B engine. I would rather spend an extra $1,000 with you plus the shipping and get the money to the Harley-Davidson dealer up here just because of the fact they said that wasn't enough money. Looking for an easier way to purchase are there items from you as well
Literally looking to acquire one of those Evolution full sets these past 8 weeks for my 2021 Fat Boy here in China but can't for the living hell find em here.
Hi speaking of a clutch upgrade. do you like the APM clutch setup its what been 4 yrs ya did an install ?? im real interested in put one in...running a 4speed on my 85 fxst with a bdl...and done with oem clutch baskets...lol..ok im not... i like taking stuff apart every other month to clean and readjust parts...lol HD strong ..
What about pressure plate for 1963 FLH It’s so you don’t have to use the. Springs anymore on 3 finger clutch Basket with still using the mousetrap less slippage I just don’t know which one to get cuz. Someone had one for $250. Monkey something however they didn’t have any in stock they were sold out. I don’t even think they make it. Maybe they were just trying to see how much money they get without making them. I don’t know cause they never got back to me. It seems Anything on Facebook you can’t trust. My I want to be able to use most of my parts from the clutch just a different pressure plate so i don’t have to use springs. It’s a closed primary with a dry belt system by super Maxx (Phil Ross) Rip Thanks. John
So if your doing just a Fueling torque cam kit and like to twist with extra joy would it be advisable to upgrade the clutch, if so to what type could you recommend?
Im doing a FM 128 10.75.1 ratio looking at 130 hp / 140 tq on a 2020 freewheeler so not big power just better improvement over stock do I still need to replace the whole clutch or can I get buy with springs only? It's 1100 lbs and 3 wheels so no I won't be ripping up the streets with it just full throttle on strait aways or passing a big truck something like that. Thanks
What we can't use a socket and a twenty pound hammer to install the bearings anymore ? LOL No good video Kevin if and when I ever need a new set up I'll remember this video !!
They don't need them. But if you're building a hot rod motor it does. Any performance build requires performance delivery to the transmission. Nascar, tractor pulls, doesn't matter. The stock clutch set up was never designed to handle it.
Lets also included primary tensioners lol speaking from experience lol😂

It seems that a good reliable Harley is built from aftermarket parts. 😅
Thank you sir, for taking the time to make this video for us. Hope all is well with you and your family.

I absolutely love the Evolution basket and American Prime clutch you set me up with. I've asked a lot of it over the past 3 years with zero issues.
Processes and preparation are absolutely critical....you get what you pay for.
I got to see the Clutch basket and clutch that is going in my build. Looking forward to bringing my bike up soon.
As we say in the oilfield, never enough money to do it right the first time but always enough money to do it over again.
The trask basket combination, you talk about the feel of the clutch with this setup. How well does that feel transfer with a hydraulic clutch ?
Running a stock basket, stock compensator with a barnett clutch, HD spring on 106 stroker twin cam drag bike with a giant slick. Over 200 passes. Does 10.60 in the 1/4 mile. No problems. lol...your stock package is only a matter of time...but keep on strokin' and saving up $$$
It only has to happen once. And that one time may kill you.
Loved this video. Covered the spectrum and the machinist aspects covered is also enjoyable and respected. When I do a build some day, money permitting, you are gonna be my shop for sure. Thanks Kevin.
I use barnett scorpion has been holding up well with 160 HP
I ain't got 160hp, but my 96in S&S Sidewinder, Sputhe 5-spd and Barnett Scorpion will chirp that rear sneaker at will.
Just the clutch and hub or the basket too?
George Bryce over at star racing uses stock primary parts except for his own compensator ramp on his 250hp 225tq drag bike 145ci M8 with 40shot of N2O Blue Five-O

Perfect timing. This has been on my to do list. I have 2015 FLTURSE with a mild build 117. Seems the CVO with hydro clutch makes choices limited. I appreciate your videos.
Very informative and taken to heart, that was information I needed for my bikes, thank you for putting out the information, it is appreciated!

I only had one problem with my American prime clutch the bearing went out on the pressure plate
Older Big Twins had a steel clutch basket that was indestructible.
Thank you for the useful information, another step towards what to do when I finally upgrade my M8
My clutch is still doing fine ( not sure which one you installed on it). Glad I got it. On another topic, have you got in any of the new “Skunk Works” timing covers or derby covers in?
Thank you sir. Alway great info. An I like that you give your knowledge based on experience
That alone is Gold
Loved today's video . I would love to get your take on breaking procedures after the build. Thanks keep up the great work.

Try an Alto Carbonite clutch in stock hub

Tighten loosen tighten lol.... or maybe just don't soak the bolt in locktight ....
Great video.
I know Ed at Evolution Ind. Great product..

One topic that's never covered. Primary chain
How to check it for wear or stretching an when it should be replaced.
Thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge with us!! We all know it didn’t come to you free and easily.
Another great learning experience 👏
You should sell this asca unit online.
There's a opportunity there!

Great Video Kevin!
would you recommend using an aftermarket clutch for a stock bike ? just feels like sometimes with me and the wife on there is slips but it happens rarely
Hahahaha!!! Yes, the right hand does cause a lot of problems... but it's so much fun!
Lol. Best part of owning a hardly Davidson is that by the time you're done trying to get ahead of the curve and avoid breakdowns, it's Frankenstein.
Right hand calibration?
Much experience with Rekluse clutch and basket?
How about the small thought out bearing that comes apart from some heavy duty clutches?
thank you for the recommend for the clutch
Very informative sir
Have you used a Fitzgerald basket yet?
Shatter or bend? I would think steel bending is better than cast shattering. Not sure but I thought I'd ask.

Who makes the Harley clutches for Harley?
👍🤠 I hope I never have to do that!

Hope all is well with you and your New Shop Kevin!! Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge with us all!!❤😊
When can i get my motor to you for a 117 build twin cam 2010 street glide
You would want to email his shop for that question
Hi Kevin, better hire some help to build complete clutches! I’ll take one.
Gotta be serious about performance! You better put a diamond terminator on that finger
Might have been an excuse to do an upgrade😅😂😅
What we can't use a socket and a twenty pound hammer to install the bearings anymore ? LOL No good video Kevin if and when I ever need a new set up I'll remember this video !!
Problem not issue. Issues are magazines and newspapers, not problems
I cant stop looking at your glasses lol the right lens looks so dirty and foggy, Great content though
why does a $20000+ motorcycle need additional work to become reliable?
Its almost impossible to never grab a handful.
⭐
Good thing I have a 64 year old throttle hand...not a 20 year old lol
This is fine dining explained.
you buy a harley then need to aftermarket the $hit out of it to correct what should have been right out of the factory..
So… mathematically speaking, a $500 part to save many thousands of dollars of damage, now costs thousands to build into your bike?
spend the money on a custom build, and then not spend the money on the primary ?? That is like buying custom ammo for a weapon you don't own.
I would never by a bike that need "upgrades" like this
They don't need them. But if you're building a hot rod motor it does. Any performance build requires performance delivery to the transmission. Nascar, tractor pulls, doesn't matter. The stock clutch set up was never designed to handle it.
What part on Harley's don't need changing should be the video, IS there anything that doesn't need an upgrade?? This is rediculous.
over 100 years and they still can't get it right; because they don't want a reliable motor because it will hurt their service revenue stream
Instead of spending a fortune upgrading junk Harleys just buy a Honda Goldwing duuuuh.
your re watching the wrong channel einstein
