    I still think this has a big edge over m43 in terms of kit size and features. Built in nd filter, collapsable lens, 5x normal to telephoto zoom range, fairly bright (for a large sensor compact), canon color science, image stabilization, FAST ZOOM (VERY IMPORTANT, LX100 and leica dlux suffers big time having such a slow zoom), pop up flash, leaf shutter, and all this is offered with a 1.5 inch sensor which is bigger than m43. This is so much to offer in such a small package.
    In regards to the bad jpegs, there is a setting to enable higher resolution jpegs. By default it captures in the medium setting.
    Ive been looking for a camera that can kind of do it all that i can bring with me everywhere and i was looking for something with the least amount of compromises. This camera ticks every box for me, personally. Ive also found that its compact form factor disarms people around you and are way more open to taking candids, which is important to me as well

      Agree, so many pros with this camera. I still think the jpegs are bad, but I prefer to shoot raw anyway. I would love to see a modern successor.

    Friendly tip - stop looking at the monitor / text prompter - look at the audience (the camera you're filming on).

    The 13 MP and lack of weather-sealing are deal breakers for me. I have purchased 2 Canon G1 X Mark IIIs because they are weather-sealed, take decent photos, and my siblings love to borrow them. I gave one to my sister who has Parkinson's disease. I bought a second one in case I need to talk her through something on the phone and because I know my brother wants to borrow it again for a few months. I normally take a camera with an interchangeable lens on vacation but I will pack the G1 X Mark III for when I get sore or want to cover the 24-70ish focal range. However, if I had left the family out of the equation, I would have gotten the Fuji X100V or VI with the conversion lenses instead of the second G1 X Mark III.

    • @leadwhite1249
      @leadwhite1249  3 месяца назад +1

      I'll be getting a G1X III sometime soon to try out. I go back and forth on the prime vs zoom thing, and maybe it depends what kind of trip it is. If I was going to a family event (wedding, etc) I'd bring a prime, but if I wanted more landscape, site-seeing stuff maybe the zoom?

    Very interesting camera which I didn't know comes close to M43, thought Canon only had 1inch sensors in their point and shoots. But I think I might rather give up the 5x zoom / size and choose the Sony a6000 with budget prime - just my personal preference :)
    Small constructive critisism from one YT creator to another: I think you should practise to talk directly to the lens. I'm not sure, if you are reading from a script or monitor yourself on a screen, but it feels a bit disconnected when you don't look directly into the lens, although your presentation and information is excellent. If you are reading of a script, a teleprompter might be a good idea. Otherwise I guess practise - and believe me, I still suck at talking to the camera (since English is my third language), although I'm doing my best to improve with every video :)
    You are definitely able to do it, the last few minutes of the video you were looking at the lens and that felt much more natural to watch.

    • @leadwhite1249
      @leadwhite1249  3 месяца назад +2

      a6000 with a small prime would be a totally valid option.
      I know the not-talking-to-the-lens things is particularly bad in this video. I considered reshooting it, but it had taken so long to get out, I didn't want to delay it. I see a teleprompter in my future.

      If one does want a bit of zoom, I think you can't beat m43 for a good balance between size and quality (have a 20mp Panasonic GX9 and a tiny GF7 myself)

    thanks for the review My search for an alternative to my aging fuji x30 and looking for something else than leica d-lux 8 leads me here. , amazing this old camera is still better than most recent one. , I wish you could provide some insight for portraits and dof

    • @leadwhite1249
      @leadwhite1249  6 дней назад

      As long as you shoot raw and watch the highlights I think this is one of the better point and shoots (at least with zoom). As you get into the longer range (80-120mm) you can achieve a fairly shallow dof.

    How nostalgic. Thank you very much for making this video as I recently found my G1X from the top of my shelf and realized that I didn't even use it to its full potential for the past 10 years. A little bit off topic. Can I repurpose and use it as a webcam? Not sure if the technology is too old for Zoom calls.

    • @leadwhite1249
      @leadwhite1249  2 месяца назад +1

      glad it inspired you to shoot with your camera again. Unfortunately, the G1X Mark 1 and Mark 2 are too old to use as a webcam. There is a micro-hdmi port but it only works to play slideshows on a tv.

    I have the mark I and am really happy with it, cost me very little and is great for street photography, the OIS is also stellar, the only negative is the close focusing distance, which is awful, even in macro mode.

    • @leadwhite1249
      @leadwhite1249  3 месяца назад

      Glad you like it. I do think they improved the close focus in the Mark 2 - sensor is the same, but the lens is redesigned.

    • @viper3391

      @@leadwhite1249 you sure the sensor Is the same? On the Mark I i see 14.3mpx roughly, where the Mark II Is 13mpx. Have a feeling they are in fact different

    • @leadwhite1249
      @leadwhite1249  3 месяца назад

      @@viper3391 Yes, the actual sensor is the same, but the MP count is different. The mark II uses a 'multi-aspect ratio' setup where the lens doesn't cover 100% of the sensor area, and the extra data is thrown away - it's the same as what panasonic does on the LX100 cameras. The mark III switches to a brand new sensor.

    currently I'm in the market for a small camera with large sensor. APS-C is a must, or maybe m4/3. Fixed lens is okay. I've tried a couple of compact cameras with zoom lenses. They are good for holiday, occasional shooting. 2 things that bother me : startup time and the lack of physical button for muscle memory. Hoping fuji continue the x70 lineup with new sensor.
    I wanted to love ricoh GR, but the dust issues seems affecting a lot of users.

    • @leadwhite1249
      @leadwhite1249  3 месяца назад

      I think lots of us would love a new x70, there is definitely a market for it. Regarding muscle memory - the G1X lets you change what the controls rings around the lens do, but then when you switch modes, the ring function also changes. It's -too- customizable. On the other hand, you can set it to return to the last used focal length when it turns on, which is very welcome. As for the dust on sensors issue, I wouldn't lose sleep over it - at least it's not an issue I've ever directly experienced.

    Great video, you are very clear in what you talk about. But I have noticed in a few of your videos, you are looking off to the side and Im assuming you are reading talking points, which is something I still need to get in my head to do with videos, but have you thought about a telaprompter?

    • @leadwhite1249
      @leadwhite1249  3 дня назад

      Yeah, it's the number one piece of feedback I get. I've been playing around with them a bit but haven't got a teleprompter setup yet that doesn't feel horribly clunky, so for now, I'll at least put the notes above or below the lens, and not off to the side.

      You are entitled to your own opinion, but I really don't put that much weight on megapixels, especially in the age of social media. Dynamic range, and noise/high iso are probably a bigger concern on this camera than mp. Lot's of people can't afford or justify the cost of brand new gear and I don't want to give the impression you need something high end to do good photography.
