    I cut my photograph teeth on black and white photo film in the 1970s, when it was still cheaper here in Malaysia than colour film stock. I still remember that you really had be careful of lighting, more so than colour film. Ironically, my black and white photos still look pristine whereas my colour photos of the same age have faded drastically.

    The only disappointment with this is that it doesn't have a retro body to go with it. Pentax would have a total winner on their hands with a classic MX-style camera, especially as it'd still be a DSLR and have decades of nice Pentax lenses to chuck on it. I feel like the majority of people buying a monochrome camera are likely to be street shooters, and they tend to want something fairly stylish 😅

      @@dreadnoughtandcrow Have you just learned what inane means and just use it on every comment thread?
      Current Fujifilm is thriving to the point that you cannot get their most cameras anymore because retro bodies are so it makes sense that people want a body from a manufacturer who already has a lot of experience with design retro styled bodies and lenses like the Limited series.
      If you feel like that's "inane" you should probably hold off that moonshine because YOU are the one not thinking straight here.

      You can shoot in black and white on many DSLRs, but since it's much better to convert afterward, it doesn't make much sense to do it in-camera. A color sensor allows you to adjust different channels when converting to black-and-white and that is huge benefit. If a monochrome camera doesn’t offer that kind of flexibility it can't produce as good black-and-white images as a standard DSLR, or it don't allow you to express your own view of the tonality of the subject.
      Modern DSLRs allow you to create black-and-white photos far better than what old masters like Adams, Cartier-Bresson, or Salgado could have ever dreamed of. Even the cheapest cameras from 10-15 years ago can achieve this.

    The sharpness advantage comes from the lack of interpolation. When each photosite contains all the information, you get the actual 25mp out of your 25mp sensor, instead of 12.5-6.25mp (12.5 for green and 6.25 for red/blue) you'd get from a full-color sensor with bayer filter in front of it.

    • @andreasoberg2021
      @andreasoberg2021 11 месяцев назад +7

      The sharpness advantage is there on mono senaors but it is very small. The reduced noise is a big improvement however

    • @tubularificationed
      @tubularificationed 11 месяцев назад

      @ds, you can't do a naive sharpness calculation. Modern color demosaicking isn't just "interpolating", it is a sophisticated fully edge-preserving algorithm. Therefore, there's no (relevant) sharpness gain for a mono sensor.
      I think this is also the very reason why Foveon (=every pixel has every color) never had a chance in the market against Bayer mosaics.
      Synthesizing full color from Bayer, while preserving all sharpness, is simply too good today.
      @andreasoberg2021
      Keep in mind, that Pentax mono seems to do strong denoising cheating of its RAW files.
      Such cheating was already (mathematically) analyzed and confirmed for the color K-3 III, but now it seems as if this denoising may have reached an all-time high? Not formally analyzed yet AFAIK (because nobody among the "smart guys" is interested in looking at this camera, Pentax is dead for the majority of the photo community).
      But as a precaution, any simple naive visual A/B noise comparison would need to keep such in mind.

      @@kalinmir I'm a Pentax fanboy, but only God knows what they are up to. Earlier a french(?) Pentax representative said the film camera is coming spring '24, then Pentax told the media there is no exact time when and if they release a film camera.
      IDK if K1 mk III is in development, the only time i've read speculations about it is when a dude on pentaxforums wrote that he left his K1 mk II on top of his car and it only fell off when he was driving at 60kmph. When he recovered it the back lcd was broken off, but the camera was still functioning so he sent it to the service(i believe in Australia) and they informed him that they don't have spare parts for the screen assembly. This part shortage sparked speculations about Pentax maybe about to release the K1 mk III.
      I really want Pentax to be succesfull. I think they should focus on specs that would appeal to a larger buyer base then people who are already married to them.
      They should beef up the video capabilities and autofocus. They should improve their phase detect autofocus and tracking as well. Honestly their autofocus(both in tracking and coverage) should be better than Nikon D500's/Canon 7D's and also the buffer depth should be comparable, because realistically Pentax is mostly competing with older second hand mid to higher end Nikon and Canon DSLRs. For example even though i want it over them, but the K-3 mk III should have obliterated the D500 and the 7D mkII in every aspect, but it didn't and it is more expensive plus there are less Pentax lenses that are capable of fast continous focusing.
      If they would up the video specs and LV autofocus, their cameras would be more appealing to hybrid shooters who otherwise prefer an OVF for photography and basically to anyone. This shouldn't be a more or less total sacrifice of video and LV shooting.
      And they have to update their lens line up too. I use screw drive lenses and i'm OK with that, but honestly they should have introduce a bunch of PLM lenses and not only in the higher price tiers(also I'm pissed about SDM). Those would be modern lenses in Pentax terms, but for anyone else these are called...lenses.
      Also their processing. I think it came up at the K-1 review's comments on imaging-resource, that Pentax has the worst JPGs...until you turn of NR and sharpening, then it becomes the best. They should adress this as well. I like the JPGs out of my K-S2 and K10D, but Pentax should be the best without any tricks.
      I want to emphasise: I'm a Pentax fanboy.

    I am lucky to be able to shoot black and white images using a full frame medium format device (it is a Phase One IQ4 150 Achromatic), and I love it.
    I don't know about smaller colorless (I prefer not to use the monochromatic phrase as these cameras don't produce a single bit of chromatic information) sensors, but this one has an additional benefit of lacking not just the CFA, but the hot mirror, so one can use it to take really nice high contrast infrared images (remember, the Phase One has real 16bit raw files).
    The ISO advantage Chris was mentioning stands only until you attach a color filter, as it will by design cut off some of the light. The effect is quite the opposite in real life to be honest, because of the non-discriminating quality of the usual CFA attached to a regular color sensor (loosing one stop only) and the regular color filters which tends to loose more than one stop (the lightest yellow is around 1 stop).
    Still, this camera is a really nice way to get into the digital black and white photography, so I'm happy that it exists.

I'm still getting to know my G9II (I usually shoot birds, and it released at the beginning of the winter after most had migrated out of my area) but I did set one of the custom buttons to swap color profiles to Leica Monochrom.

    I have been using Pentax DSLR's for 15 years, my first DSLR was a Pentax K100D super and l purchased many others over the years. My favorites include the Kp, all k3 cameras and my K1 MKII, the only k3 I don't have is the monochrome version, I placed a pre order for the monochrome k3 and got shut out, they sold out of the first run and as the months went by B&H photo still had them listed on back ordered so plenty people bought them, but things happen for a reason I gave up on the camera and then Nikon released the ZF and it was not a dedicated B&W camera but it was something I wanted to round out my collection of Pentax ,Olympus, Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras , the ZF is a classic retro style camera and it reminds me of my Uncle's Nikon film camera, I paired the ZF with the Z6II and they compliment the other cameras I have perfectly, I enjoy using different cameras and glass and that has kept photography fresh for me for many years.

    What I'd love is a Fujifilm GFX Mono. The older 50Mp sensor would be sufficient, so a "GFX50R II Mono" or "GFX50S II Mono". But, it seems that Fujifilm has finally got through it's stock of the old 50Pm sensor, and will only be using the 100Mp going forwards.
    I proposed the 50Mp sensor, because it would keep the costs down on what would be a specialist camera. It's be a nice second body if you were already invested in the GFX system. The 100Mp sensor would probably push the costs into a region that would make it harder for people to justify as a second body, and too many people prefer the flexibility of colour.

    • @sierragold

      But, once I get the RAWs to Capture One, I'll B/W edit my own way. (I don't intend to shoot JPG)
      And that's beside the point.
      The goal of getting a real monochrome version is to get the additional sharpness, and dynamic range from the loss of the colour array.

    • @Ildskalli

      The reason there isn’t a K-1 Mono is because that body’s outdated already, and it’d have been a huge risk to invest the R&D to make it considering that Ricoh will likely announce a successor soon. Making a monochrome sensor is trivial for the fab, they just need to skip the CFA. Also, a K-1 mono would cost upwards of $3K, making it a huge gamble. The K-3.3 is a much safer choice, as it’s cheaper and state of the art. The fact that it’s been pretty much backordered since its announcement is a testament to Ricoh’s wise choice of monochrome body.
