    and the rave reviews keep pouring in…
    Art and Tech - An O Gauge Cinematic Tour de Force
    The legendary Baltimore and Ohio 2-10-2 “Big Six” locomotive is brought to life in living color by master modeler Norm Charbonneau. Over 150 of these steam breathing beasts served the B&O with distinction from 1914 to 1959. It is said that they were so successful that they kept articulated locomotives off the B&O Pittsburg Division. Sadly, no Big Sixes survive in museums, but Norm brings back their glory days to the masses with epic video of this noble iron horse in action on his outstanding layout.
    Charbonneau has reached a new pinnacle here in The Chronicles of Norm Number Twelve - The Big Six. In the fashion of a true Renaissance man, he blends mastery of weathering paint color, hue and tone with the cinematography of a sweeping Hollywood epic. In the workshop he flexes his awesome technical skills in displays of unmatched bodacity - electronics, mechanics, failure diagnosis, identification and repair. He uses a 3D printer with the ease that lesser mortals use a toaster.
    This video delivers the freight - breathtaking footage of the B&O Big Six soaring over the rails, and in-depth technical exposition of how Norm makes the magic happen.

    I am so glad you pointed that out about Kadee couplers mating with traditional postwar Lionel knuckle couplers, this is the whole reason the Kadee's look like they do rather than being an exact scale coupler. Back in the 50's and going forward, Kadee did this in order to mate with Lionel since there was so much out there with these oversized couplers. Have you considered the electro-couplers by Atlas which are scale? As for that missing builder's plate, try contacting Precision Scale out in Oregon. I had a super heater plate missing from my MTH Triplex and low and behold, they had them so give those guys a try. 3rd Rail does not support older models so you are on your own which is okay if buy these models knowing this scenario. I have a 3rd Rail N&W Y6B whic had no electronics and was missing the rods and linkage from the rear engine, engineer side. Of course it now has ERR which is awesome at the 100 step controlling and I did put a new Sunset 3rd Rail smoke unit (Royz Trains) in it though I'm like you, I don't use the smoke unit very often. The main large rods are Lionel's, modified a bit to fit the 3rd Rail mountings. When Lionel learned what these parts were for, they were all too happy to help. As for the small rods, I hand made them with files and tiny, tiny drill bits. It was fun resurrecting that beautiful model, won't do it again though!! 😁Who am I kidding, if the opportunity comes along again, I probably will.

    • @normstrains
      @normstrains  Год назад +2

      I’ve had mixed success with parts support for vintage 3rd Rail. I haven’t had to make rods yet, but I am slowly investing in small machine tools just in case. As for the builder’s plate, I may check in with PSC. My effort was better than nothing but could be nicer.

    HOT DOG! The B&O S1a 2-10-2 Big Six! My favorite B&O locomotive! Sweet!
    They were the best "Santa-Fe" type made. They were not only head end power but they were THE helper engines based in either Cumberland, MD, Hyndman, PA from the east or Connellsville, PA from the west. As great as the EM-1's were, the Big Sixes were only replaced by diesels. They had power but also a mikado's speed in quick dispatch trains with the 64" drivers. Awesome video and locomotive!

It was built into the remains of the old viaduct over Crawford Ave across from the old WM station. Google Street View shows is still there in 2008 but it was gone by 2012. I have used the Lionel boards on several projects over the years. Up until September of this year, they were readily available on their support site. Like I mentioned in the vid, they pulled them all off just before their 50% off sale and there is no word yet as to where they went.
      In any case, if you can find some of the Lionel service supplements, you can see some of the basic wiring. Here is one worth looking at:
      www.lionelsupport.com/Support%20Service%20Documents/Supplement45Complete.pdf
      The serial line works the same whether you're using Lionel OEM stuff or ERR. It's referenced to chassis ground/outside rail.

    • @normstrains
      @normstrains  Год назад

      The battery is for keeping the Railsounds up in conventional mode during direction changes and can keep the sounds up for power interruptions in command mode. Since I go through the trouble of adding additional pickup rollers, I don’t use one. Whatever you use, they should be alkaline, and they should be checked periodically. I highly recommend removing them for long term storage.

    Got a quick question for you Norm, I have an older lionel Sd40t-2 and I love it but the sounds are very much to be desired. Would it be a difficult task to upgrade the engine to legacy control and legacy railsounds? It also has this really weird plastic wheel in the center on the trucks, like it's the standard metal wheel, them the plastic wheel which has no flange then the metal flanged wheel with the traction tire. Could I go about putting an actual flanged metal wheel there? Thanks, great work as always!

    • @normstrains
      @normstrains  Год назад

      Are you talking about the Tunnel Motors Lionel made in the mid 2000s? I always thought they sounded ok (opinion). I think you’re better off with the blind wheel in the center vs. being inboard. I also think swapping out the TMCC DCDS for ERR Cruise M would be more cost effective (around $129 or so) than a full Legacy upgrade. It will run quite nicely, way smoother than the old 32 step Odyssey.

    • @ChargerusPrime
      @ChargerusPrime Год назад +1

      @@normstrains I can understand that, the wheels don't all touch the rails so it's odd to me not hearing the 3 wheels click over each rail joint. And yes, on the manual it says 2002-2003. Why not just fix the marker lights by installing new properly designed LED's with whatever necessary supporting electronics/ electrical "stuff" (resistors/doides) vs. Bagging having working marker lights? While youve got that thing all ripped apart, and all the attention to detail you give. Why not just retrofit with dimmer, more realistic markers that just arent so bright? I know its more work, but youve already done all that amazing detailing and fixing everything else that didnt work right.
    My other question is, after owning a few very expensive Third Rail and Sunset 3-rail locos, including a B&O E-M1...the earlier 3-rd rail locos didnt have rubber tires on any of the drivers. I had two EM-1's. A Lionel with the full TMCC package, and I had a sunset with no sound and no traction tires. The Lionel EM-1 pulled my 50 car coal drag (including 25 or 30 of the very heavy Atlas Coal hoppers) and it would have probably pulled 100 car coal drag. The Sunset or 3rd rail EM-1 hardly pulled 10-15 of those Atlas Coal Hoppers before it just sat there and spun its wheels and went no-where.
    I ended up just selling both the EM-1's. For a normal persons layout, it just wasnt a practical loco to try to run, and to make my EM-1's work, I would have had to double head them, and the Lionel EM-1 would have been litteralky dragging both the coal drag AND the Third Rail EM-1 around our 45ft x 14ft layouts two outer main line tracks.
    I gave up buying and fooling with the older earlier Third Rail 3-rail stuff for this reason, unless just using it for a static siding, yard or roundhouse static model. Thats an expensive static model. I took a beating when I resold that Third Rail EM-1. I paid over $1200.00 for it in the late 90's or ealy 2000 time frame. I couldnt give the thing away. I think I was lucky to get $700.00 for it when I eventually got rid of it.

    • @normstrains
      @normstrains  Год назад

      Dimming the LEDs and/or changing their colors would be pretty trivial. I just did not want them lit at all. Sorry to hear of your troubles with the EM-1. I would not mind a 3rd Rail one at the right price. I enjoy working on and running my 3rd Rails. My Q2s and the J1a do not have traction tires but pull well on my flat layout.
