Hi Norm. I have this engine in HO. The PRR bought 2 batches of these Limas.. The first 11 did not have MU or dynamic brakes. Also, no train phone. The second batch of 11 had MU, Dynamic brakes AND train phone antenna. Don't cut off the dynamic and train phone. The 8900 series had both and often ran in pairs around Steubenville Ohio The first 11 were numbered in the 5600 series
WOW! I have seen more exotic train engines if the 1920's to the 1940's in scale in RUclips than in books or period films. This beast is just amazing! Need one of these for display in my studio with my Hudson engine. Excellent work thank you for the post.
Norm, you are the ultimate perfectionist! That comes across in your minutely detailed criticisms of the work as it progesses toward a stunning end result! This is a case study in trial, error, and ultimate project success. Your attention to detail reveals something very special about human nature and its incredible inventiveness. At the risk of overstating the case, It's this kind of inventiveness and perfectionism that has improved the human condition from its origins to the modern technological world that we live in and within which we prosper. Thanks so much for sharing your ingenuity for all our betterment!
It's the way you let us discover along with you the tricks and tips that you learn, the stumbles and victories you have, and then the final work that is so entertaining on your channel.
Hi Norm! Great video and now I now why my flangeless wheels act so goofy on my wide radius curves. Luckily, the factory couplers have pull weight when hooked to consist to keep them on the rails. Maybe someday will replace the future.
Another great video, Norm!!!! I have to say that I have always thought that those big blocky center cab Lima transfer switchers just scream heavy industrial, no frills, north-eastern railroading.....
Norm, Awesome video, those units were true beasts, when I first read that title of the video, I thought why was Norm doing a video about me? LOL Teasing!
Train phone was correct on some of BS24m ; however half of the antenna was on one side of the hood and one half on the other side of the hood. Two different orders of BS24m with different trucks on one order. You are correct no dynamic brakes
Here's some interesting reading: railroad.net/lima-transfer-units-on-pennsy-t159323.html#p1325656 I decided against removing the db assemblies and did not pursue adding MU hardware to the end platforms. It was a bit more work than I wanted to get into. I still may look into adding sound to this unit but that may be for another time. I really wanted fixed, full width pilots. I felt that 'completed' the look of these beasts.
Enjoyed as always. Wouldn't worry about the cut levers. They have a tendency to get damaged in regular service and repaired. One question though. If the one engine is a trailing dummy would it have crew members on it. You and your family have a safe and wonderful Christmas.
I don't know why they put a figure is in the dummy unit because then you would have 4 people with two locomotive. Did you have to disassemble the dummy just to get unnecessary engineer figures out.
Norm, strongly suggest not touching that uncured resin. Your body develops an immune response to skin exposure over time. Starts with burns, but can end with strong headaches and rashes to even faint fumes from cured models. Kathy Millatt supposedly developed this issue.
I am not sure what it is about these Center Cab Baldwins that draws me to them. I have all the Kantner collection JPM DVDs and it shows the Baldwins quite a bit. You should check them out, on sale for $20 ea until the 24th Norm. Big Mike Bednar narrates. On the subject of repurchasing... just know you aren't alone, kind of embarrassing to admit how many times nostalgia has bit me on the arse! Great stuff and love your projects man. Happy Holidays!
@@normstrains That is one of my favorites as well. Hippos at Crowl next to the country store on Poppy Rd. Love your shop setup btw, looks like 3D printing is damn useful.
If the other unit had the sound for two prime movers as well as the power unit you would get tired of listening to it after a while. All the electronics in these things are delicate and unreliable and you can short them just by coupling the tender up to the engine.
Hello Norm, my name is Calvin. Your video's great, I have a mth steam engine it's rail king very old just ps.I was wondering if you could up grade it to ps3 for me, if so give me the cost and we'll go from there. THANK'S😊
Lima's were such problematical locomotives. They're crankshafts would have a habit of coming through the engine Baldwin should have never bought the company. I can't understand the thinking they had back then. They bought Hamilton engine so they bought the company before they found out that Hamilton engines were so rotten.

I'm not into Diesels much, but these are great. Awesome work as always.
I’ve really wanted to swap out that dummy all on my powered unit. Thanks so much for showing a great solution!!!!
Magnificent work!
Nice job. The last few shots of it in the shed actually looked like a real train! Looking forward to part deux.

awesome improvements, Norm
Looks great Norm- Taking notes. Looking for a set of these as well.

BEAUTIFUL NORM THANKS
I have never known this engine existed at all I guess you learn something everyday
Great work on loco norm

I may remove them and use them in the powered unit. The powered one has the old style MTH figures.
You sir, are an artist. Amazing

I’m first 🎉 nice find there Norm. More engines are always a nice addition.
Nice work Norm!! 👏
Norm you arm amazing Buddy
Norm, absolutely remarkable.

Thanks, I normally don’t. The removal shown in the vid was after washing but I wouldn’t recommend touching it barehanded until after final cure.

Mike Bednar is the best narrator! I have their ‘Pennsy Off the Beaten Track’ dvd.

Sounds like the same thing that happens with classic motorcycles.
If you ever decide to sell them please get in touch with me. Regards
I think your rework job is is great 👍🏻
One thing I forgot to ask, were the lights operating in the dummy units?
@@rick1716 no wiring whatsoever, no pickup rollers even.
look into "Engineering Resin" it is supposed to be tougher

I don’t really take on work for others like that but you may want to ask around on the OGR forum.
@@normstrains ok thank's keep up the video's
