Thanks for the great practical review. If I didn't already have the Fuji lens, I'd probably buy this. Having moved from Nikon to Fuji, I always felt that the Nikons edged it on sharpness, so the Viltrox might give that back. Some of the comparison images from the Viltrox also looked a tad brighter, though that vignette is quiet noticeable.
The minimum focus locking up behavior is a Viltrox thing. I notice it on the 33 1.4. It won't refocus sometimes unless you AF on it, or change aperture
Excellent comprehensive review for both video and photography. Thanks so much for your insights - particularly the bit about the aperture ring for video use!
You focus on a front object in the video. Then you suddenly want to focus on an object behind. In this case, Viltrox cannot quickly focus on the object behind. It provides full focus in 2 steps. I saw this in another review. And I've seen it here too. I'm sure now. It was important for me to learn this. Thank you for that. It was very useful to me. Viltrox provides silent focus in video shooting. But the focus performance is thought-provoking. Thanks again, I wish you success.
About the corner sharpness, the focal plane of each lens seems to be different. Take a look at the "Viltrox" logo on the side of the box, the sharpness is inverted there. Perhaps one of these lenses has a curved focal plane, it would be nice to know which.
yeah, I noticed that, the plane of focus looks slightly different especially with the aperture wide open. That being said, if you compare the areas of grass that are in focus, the vitrox still looks way sharper.
Great review! I actually love that it's 40g lighter than the Fuji, but it's a pity both 23mm lenses are still quite large compared to the xf35 f/1.4 and the xf18 f/2.
Very nice review! I was waiting eagerly on this one. Now that it's confirmed to be good I will purchase it. I own the 35mm Fuji but find it to tight most of the time as a general walkaround focal length. *Update : Just ordered the 23mm for $318,50 at AliExpress 👍🏻
I thought I was the only one with the Focus Pulling issue. In the process of reviewing it too and am also having these same problems too and no matter what settings I change it to, it feels too fast as well as loses the ability to do AF after some time. Hoping it's fixed with a future update. Great review. New Sub!
Fantastic review. A lens that I've been keeping my eye on, specifically for video work. I love your style, very thought out review. Thank you again for the review.
Awesome, thank you, it works great for video, in a few weeks i will be testing how the 23, 35 and 85 perform for landscape photography. Thanks again 👍😀😀

Very good review, thanks a lot for making it. Something I wonder that I haven't found information, is how do these 3rd party lenses perform with the X-T4 / X-H1 IBIS compared to the 1st party lenses. Supposedly there's a lot of information going to the ibis about the focal length and even focus breathing to get proper results with the Fujifilm's lenses, so I wonder if there's a noticeable difference.
Thank you for the informative video!! I also have the Fuji xt3 and since it does not have in body stabilization and neither does the Viltrox, do you see that as an issue at all? I only do still photography, landscapes and nature, so it seems like a perfect lens for me? Thanks !! :)
Thank you Ian for this informative and beautiful video. I have this Viltrox lens on my Fuji X-T200 and it keeps grinding in and out of focus after about 2 mins filming or less. Do you teach any classes or can you recommend any videos to learn how to fix this problem? Bit of a beginner Im afraid but looking forward to doing your skillshare classes. Thanks, Rosalind
After years of being with Nikon then canon several years ago I switched to oly which was way more advanced in ibis and great pro lenses. Anyway I have always been fascinated by Fuji so I took the dive and ordered the x-s10 with the Fuji 16-80mm lens as a starter and all round lens to use. I do more video than photos but also am looking at what would be good to complement what I have - these viltrox lenses and their Fuji equivalents (as well as the f2s) are ones for me to think about including the 16mm f1.4. But bearing in mind size, prove, especially smoothness and flow it seems the one lens you recommend of these is the 85mm. Correct? Maybe with the 23 f2 of Fuji which many seem to recommend for video. Any thoughts. Would love to take both photos and video with bokeh so the 56 f1.4 review you did suggests that may be something to look at and even more optimal?? Any thoughts

Just received the Viltrox and have shot with it for a few hours. I am blown away by the IQ and AF speed. Really amazing quality, not just for the money, but overall. Damn it, now I may have to try the 85mm as well, allthough I find a bit big/heavy, and do not like the lack of aperture ring. I know the 85mm is covering full frame, does that go for the 23mm as well? I don't own the xf 23mm anymore, but I remember the front glass being bigger than on the Viltrox. Was surprised that the Viltrox f1.4 front glass is so relatively small. Is there any way to test if it actually is a f1.4 lens?
@@petergabriel1606 Hello are you satisfied with the lens? I've used the demo fuji 23 1.4 before, it was very good. Are there any serious differences? I will use it for indoor portrait photography. GYM's, Kitchens, Homes.
@@eminberk2646 Hi Emin. Yes, I am very satisfied. The lens is very sharp, as most lenses are these day, but what is most important (imho) is that it also renders beautifully. The image tonality is stellar, meaning light fall off is smooth, and black/white images really pop. I have owned both 23mm Fujinons, and while the f1.4 is a great lens, the Viltrox is actually better - most definetly when it comes to AF. I never liked the f2's rendering. Comparing Fujinon f1.4 with the Viltrox, I would say the Fujinon renders a more cool image. The Viltrox is slightly warmer. High contrast images wide open will however show chromatic aberation on the Viltrox.
Hi, Sorry i dont have the 23 f2 to compare it. It's definitely better than the f1.4 for video though. I do have the fuji 35mmf2 and the focus breathing on that lens is terrible and for that reason impossibile to use for video. not sure if the 23f2 suffers from that as well. 👍

Hey Ian couple questions; Is the aperture on your Viltrox 23 non-symmetrical? Especially around f5.6? Me and a few others online have noticed it, and Viltrox says this is "normal" Can you test its brightness wide open compared to the Fuji 1.4? Your samples have no metadata but there is rumors that the Viltrox is darker than Fuji at same settings. I dont have another 23 to compare against.
I haven't noticed that. The sample photos are all captured using the same settings. So you should be able to compare the brightness. Thanks for watching 👍👍
Hi Ian! Thanks for the review, and I just have a quick question. Could you pull focus from one object to another when shooting video using manual focus? I’m just after a good video lens which gives me the flexibility to shoot manually if the AF doesn’t work out on set. Thanks!
Great review, Ian. Do you know if it lets the same amount of light in as the Fuji? I’ve heard the viltrox lenses can be up to a drop darker than their aperture would suggest, in that case it would remove one of its biggest advantages over the xf23mm f/2.
Hey buddy, You can see for yourself by downloading the test pack www.iworthphotos.com/viltrox-23mmf14-test Side by side they look pretty much the same in term of brightness in my opinion 👍😃😃

@@eminberk2646 hi, it's a bit of a mixed bag. But other than pretty serious chromatic aberration a harsh bokeh it is good. I haven't tried fuji one, so I can't compare.
It works on xpro1 and 2, but not 3 since the release buttom on xpro3 is much closer to the lens barrel. Really I have no idea why fuji changed the buttom location.
What the hell was the point then in doing that clickless aperture if its still electronically controlled? Thanks for the test shots though, they look great. Fuji XF beats it to the ground with the bokeh quality, especially in edges :)
I held a showroom model (dummy) last year. I think it was clicky - at least I do not remember it being clickless. (But maybe it was just immovable, don't know for sure).
For every RUclips review I watch on the Viltrox series of lenses, I am more unsettled and cautious of buying one. Sounds like you're getting a Chinese made 1985 Chevrolet. It will go down the road just fine with some significant wind noise and some clunking and grinding. Sometimes the hood flies open for no reason, but other than that, the radio works fine, but only on one speaker. Best to just leave the radio off and sing to yourself.
Credible review, Ian. Nice location, too - with all that rusty hardware hope you are up to date on your tetanus shots. 😁 Making images available is a plus, but d/l from Dropbox stalled several times on my iPad before completion. (Will try via laptop.) New firmware update released other day might address focus issues - a follow-up vid might help. (No, I am not a robot.😁)
Thanks paul. not sure why the download stalled. Yes they released v1 0.6 which i have installed and mentioned at the end of the video. All of the details in the video are correct as of this latest firmware update. 👍👍😃
Thanks for this, great review. Mine just arrived, and I think it has a bug. With pre-AF enabled, it sometimes doesn't turn on, and sometimes crashes during use. Has anyone seem the same?
Sorry not for me at the moment, they look too cheap and I'm guessing wouldn't have a good second hand value. The aperture ring looks really cheap and I reckon theirs a lot of room for improvement.
Can't argue with the image quality. I've been doing some side by side comparisons with some of my other fuji glass and currently its a hands down winner in terms of sharpness. 👍
@@ian_worth Thanks Ian. Best of luck with the lense. I think it needs more time to prove itself for me. I'd be afraid of the lense failing during a important job. Fuji has never let me down once. I'm sure it would be fine for the enthusiast who didn't rely on it for work.
There is a new firmware for the Viltrox 23 and 33mm. Have you already tested them? 23/33mm F1.4 STM X mount V1.0.7 firmware upgrade This firmware is a common firmware for both Viltrox AF 23mm f1.4 and Vitrox AF 33mm f1.4. V1.0.7 Update Information 1. Optimized the performance of video focus, on the bodies with adjustable focus speed focusing will be smoother. 2. Fixed the problem that the focus suddenly does not respond on video focusing.
I do agree to a point, while there is a lot of rubbish that comes from china, I also think it's a little harsh to tar all companies with the same brush. After all the x-t3 was put together in china. 👍
I wouldn't call these Viltrox lenses "cheap chinese products" and seems your problem has something to do with the simple fact that they were fully made in China, so I just reported your comment for being somewhat prejudiced trash. When will we learn not to be that idiot?
It is manual, just electronically controlled. I actually think it would be better if the aperture was just like an old vintage lens where the blades turn when the ring is turned, I think they do it this way so you can use the command dial to turn the aperture blades. That being said, I cant seem to set my command dial to make this work, so I think it definitely needs looking at. 👍
Hey Ian, great review - thanks. I just noticed this review of the 23mm Viltrox just out from Optical Limits, which is consistent with yours, they gave it 5/5 based on value. Except one thing though, their copy's corner sharpness was weak until stopped down, and they said not as good as the Fuji version. Most likely, either their Viltrox or your Fuji 23mm is a poor copy. www.opticallimits.com/fuji_x/1089-viltrox23f14 Keep up the great content. Cheers from 🇨🇦

23/33mm F1.4 STM X mount V1.0.7 firmware upgrade
This firmware is a common firmware for both Viltrox AF 23mm f1.4 and Vitrox AF 33mm f1.4.
V1.0.7 Update Information
1. Optimized the performance of video focus, on the bodies with adjustable focus speed focusing will be smoother.
2. Fixed the problem that the focus suddenly does not respond on video focusing.
Nice one, I will have to give them an update 😀😀👍
Read from forums this lens is likely to scratch the sensor on the xpro line.
Viltrox have some info on their website regarding the xpro cameras 😃👍
It does not scratch the sensor. It scratches the lens release button on the Xpro3 (only this model).
Damn i dont even have to pay for the sample photos? what a deal!
Cheers buddy 😀👍
I'll pass. Buying cheap Chinese products is turning out to be expensive, doesn't it? When will we learn?
I do agree to a point, while there is a lot of rubbish that comes from china, I also think it's a little harsh to tar all companies with the same brush. After all the x-t3 was put together in china. 👍
I wouldn't call these Viltrox lenses "cheap chinese products" and seems your problem has something to do with the simple fact that they were fully made in China, so I just reported your comment for being somewhat prejudiced trash. When will we learn not to be that idiot?
Why putting a manual Arpature when its not manual??? doesn't make sense at all.

Keep up the great content.
Cheers from 🇨🇦
Thanks buddy, That's the only trouble with lens reviews and comparisons, not every lens is the same. I think that is why youtube is so good as you can watch many videos and draw your own opinion. Thanks for watching :) 👍😃
All those problems are with the camera body, not the actual lens...
possibly, possibly not 👍
Nice Review. however, too much talking...
