The weather sealing is a sell for me. Honestly modern sensors just get much better performance at higher ISO that I don't need to go into those sub 1.8 apertures. The f2 is about $300 on the used market and am looking at adding that. Right now I have a Meike 35mm 1.7 ($70) on my Fuji and I like the focal length.
Jose Juarez glad I saw this video. I am deciding to get the viltrox or fuji 35 f2. It is clear to me now that the native 35 f2 is better for me for mentioned reasons but also because it is way smaller and I can get in good shape for 215 euro📸
Hi! There have been a bunch of firmware updates released for this lens. Last update notes: 1. Adjust the minimum focus distance 2. Optimised focus performance 3. Fixed the problem of focus hunting on some camera models。 Earlier releases also corrected a lot of other focusing and stabilisation issues. I'm very curious about your opinion now.
No matter what, I wouldn’t give up on my 35/1.4 ... colors that the lens produces are simply unmatched. As always, great review Andrew, keep them coming.
I feel the same.. having held both the F/2 and the 1.4 version, I'm stuck with the latter as my favorite lens, barely take it off my camera. I just love the looks of those photos.
This lens/brand and Fuji's new stance on 3rd party lenses changes everything. I *adore* Fuji but their lenses are honestly way too overpriced sometimes, with no budget alternatives, which makes owning the system kind of a problem for broke people like me. Even though I'm completely in love with Fuji I've discouraged several friends from buying into the system because I just knew they wouldn't have enough money to buy any of the good lenses. But now that we can get solid primes for under $300? *That* changes everything. That might finally make Fuji a solid competition against Sony and Canon's line of good budget lenses.
I shoot with Fuji 35 f2 and love it. Probably never change. However I have high hopes for (scheduled to come) Viltrox 55 f 1.4. If this could come close to Fuji 56 I would be all over it! Thanks for all the videos you do. Appreciate your thorough reviews!
Love how you do a comparison of the actual light transmitted, that's really useful to know. I'd still go for the 35 f/1.4 though, because it's so lightweight for such a large aperture!
I was waiting for your thoughts on this! It was interesting seeing your original Viltrox 85 review and then post-firmware update. Thanks for the review. Hopefully they can update the firmware to correct this issue.
I’ll admit I wanted to fight after you were talking so much shit about the 35 1.4, then I remembered I sold it and I calmed down a bit. How dare you, almost!
It all boils down to the styles you are shooting, for me the xf35 1.4 is still a keeper for me. Couldn't care less about the noise and speed...I get my photos 😎
Completely agree with your view on the Fuji 35mm 1.4. I owned it for over a year but eventually sold it. I still get a surprised response whenever I mention that I don’t like it for exactly the same reasons you don’t. It is good to hear someone else feels the same as thought I was maybe missing something..
What I am really looking forward to, someday, hopefully sooner than later ,is a Sigma or Tamron lens to compete with the Fuji 50-140. They have arguably made some excellent 70-200 lenses for Nikon, Canon and Sony. Hopefully, they will do also for Fuji.
I was also looking for alternative to Fujinon and just started with Fujifilm. Today I have purchased Fujinon 23mm f2 and Sigma 30mm f1.4. My plan was to test them during week, make decision and return one of them back to shop. I cannot be more suprised - I didn't need week, not day, not one hour. After few shoots I can tell you that Sigma for Fujifilm is much more SHARPER, of course it has BETTER BOKEH (I cant compare with fujinon 23 f1.4, but this one has old SLOOOWER AF speed). As bonus - Sigma is cheaper.
The sigma 18-35 with ther fringer seems to be the best value overall. It's basically 3 primes and with th e XT4 the AF is reliable on video. Its heavy for sure but it beats carrying 2 other primes in the bag
Absolutely agree to this. The Sigma is a great lens. And I'm very happy with the fringer so far. It gives you so many great lens options with you Fuji camera.
Just sold my 5dsr and lenses and picked up a xpro2 and 35 f2. As well as a mamiya7, I've enjoyed watching your videos about the Fuji lens systems which are foreign to me.
From what I can tell, the bokeh really isn't that different at all. For some off reason, at 35mm the difference between f2 and f1.4 isn't very big at all. This is why I went back to the 35mmf2. Faster, quieter, smaller. It misses that 3d effect that the f1.4 gives but a trade off is a trade off. Comparing the 35mmf2 and 33mmf1.4, the 35 looks sharper for sure and suffers less from CA etc. Also, that build quality is fantastic. I think the increase in price is justified but $ for $, they're probably equivalent.
Thanks, Andrew! I think I’ll skip this one. This video reminds me why I’m subscribed to your channel. While other channel praises the 33mm, you have us a very honest review. I think I’ll stick with the Mitakon 0.95, which I wish you review! Cheers!
Honestly, Fujifilm just made some good and cheap prime lenses that are unbeatable at a certain point, especially the 23,33,50mm f/2, its cheap, its sharp, its fast, its small, its lightweight. 3rd party companies seem not to spend that many resources for APSC lens make Fujifilm in a leading position.
I heard Tokina also making one for X mount. Same focal length 23,33 and 56. I’ll wait for that and decide which one to get. Right now i’m using fuji 23 f1.4 and viltrox 85mm. Loving the Viltrox 85mm tho.
The most important note of this review is the real light gathering of the lenses. On the 35mm F2 you can get almost same amount of light and better image handling wide open, less blur but it can get better closeup, plus WR.. something can't solve a firmware update. Interesting comparison, not just a showcase ;)
I recently bought the XC 35mm f/2 (when stopped down) is a decent non weather sealed lens however I will be purchasing the Viltrox in the near future. I'm confident that any flaws highlighted here will be rectified with firmware. I've been a bit underwhelmed especially at f/2 with the XC lens, maybe I got a bad copy who knows. I have the Viltrox 85mm which I love so no doubt will also pick up the 23, 33 and 55 in the near future.
I'm waiting for a 30mm lens for my Fuji-X lens. I really like the field of view of a 30mm. That's one reason I purchased the 27mm 2.8 lens. That lens is the closest to a 30mm I can get.
your reviews are just so awesome! another excellent review giving us good advice. thanks to you i have bought every lens you reccommend and was a great buy!
My biggest frustration with native Fuji lens is the vignette correction that become apparent during video capture when transitioning from a dark space to a bright space and vice versa. I'd love to know if that issue exists in the Viltrox or not. If not, this lens will be my go to video lens
I love the click-less aperture rings! I watched this review and Pal2Tec and will be buying this used. I have the 23 and love it's 35 focal length and need the 50 as well so it's a no brain er.
Andrew & Denae haha yep. I know, I lived there most my life. Great video! I have been skeptical of anything Viltrox since my bad experience with the EF-M2 Focal reducers that were garbage. This looks like an improvement, albeit flawed. Nice price point though.
I can't see myself selling my XF 35/1.4, it's just such a good lens for my purposes. I don't shoot video with it, and if I wanted to shoot video at 35mm I'd likely get the XC 35/2 or one of those cheap Chinese all-manual 35s.
Sold on the Fuji F2, I was considering the Viltrox and Fuji f1.4 but the weaknesses of the viltrox and the tiny differences of the Fuji just don't seem a good trade off
You hurt my soul though trashing the Fuji 35 f/1.4. haha. But seriously,gGlad you compared actual exposure values. The fact that it's not truly 1 stop faster will be missed by a lot of reviews and those who purchase it.
i love my Sigma on my sony a6400. switching to Fuji XT4 that i ordered, as soon as it arrives to me! definitely considering a Viltrox lens and hoping Sigma joins the Fuji mount now that they are opening their system to 3rd parties. But yeah, viltrox seems to have several coming out this year, huh?
thegeneral123 I am also worried about the clickless aperture ring, i mean...for less than 300$ (about 260-280) you can get a mostly decent 50mm eq. at f1.4! It’s not that bad at all. If only they made a smaller form factor (like the original Fuji 35mm) with a normal aperture ring i could have bought it like instantly!
@@tommasomencarelli7952 Big lenses don't really bother me. I rock the 16mm F1.4 and the 55-200 with the 18-55 all the time. One thing though that I mentioned to Viltrox was the lack of weathersealing. If they had offered a version of the lens with a normal click aperture ring and weather sealing. It would have been a killer if the lens is fast and sharp. The other thing though that annoys me is how they blatantly saw the positive reaction to the 33mm and jacked the price up for the 23mm. That just struck me as greedy. I bet the 55mm F1.4 will be even more expensive still.
I don’t think the 33 f1.4 is worth it. Lenses these days are tack sharp wide open even at f1.2. Its just not sharp enough at 1.4. I also wouldn’t get the 35 f2 as it just doesn’t have enough subject separation plus I don’t like how tiny it is. The XF 35 1.4 is old and I don’t like that it extends externally plus it’s over-priced. I’d rather wait and see what Sigma or Fuji does before the end of the year.
Finally someone that I can relate too, I had both 35mm f1.4 & F2 & I couldn’t see the magic that every was raving on about with the 1.4’ version? So o sold it and kept the F2 which is great, optically I couldn’t see any difference in them both regarding IQ.
Haha. Yup. I am constantly hearing about the "magic". I don't think they would be able to tell the difference in a blind test. I'd make a video testing the theory, but that'd be a little like ruining Christmas. As long as they are happy. :)
The “magic” of the 35mm 1.4 maybe is the way the len renders color in certain light conditions combine with how natural the shallow depth at 1.4 just “clicks” with the field of view that results in a very “analog” feel that many people are pleased of. But indeed, only under specific conditions, otherwise the image quality between the 1.4 and the f2 are pretty much the same.
Yes, you are demonstrating what I always say. When people claim a lens is magic they tend to reference color rendering. It's the easiest to claim and hardest to disprove that there is nothing magical about most gear. But if the lens makes you happy, that's certainly important as it transfers directly into feeling inspired and being excited to shoot. Heaven knows I do that myself with my favorite lens, the 16mm 1.4. Though, if I'm honest, there's nothing particularly special about it that couldn't be beat or duplicated by a third party in short order.
I really like the performance of my f2 version. How does it compare while using face and eye detect? If the performance is on par with the f2 I will consider to sell the f2 and go with the 1.4. The only negative in my book is it's enormous size!
Interesting, other reviews ive seen have said that its incredibly sharp. Nice to see a counter to that but I cant help but wonder if theres an issue with the copy you have? I'll obviously keep my Fuji 35 1.4, but im very excited for the 23 and 56 from Viltrox! Edit: It would be super helpful if you could post sample images for us to peep ourselves, RUclips compression isnt the best to judge with
Great review, as usual! I think saying it is 1/2 stop darker is a bit overstated. I have seen another reviewer bench their other lenses based on exposure, and found it about 20%. But more interestingly, Viltrox is releasing the same optical formula in a cine-lens. They labelled it as T/1.5, that is 17% of a stop darker. Given the evidence I have seen, T/1.5 seems more accurate to me. Personally, owning the 35mm f2, I don't think the difference between T/1.4 and T/1.5 is really worth considering as a "con," especially considering that Fuji bakes vignette correction into my Fujicrons (which I love) automatically raising exposure in the edges and inducing some light noise at higher ISOs in those regions. If I were a videographer, it would be imperative to know the T-stop. Exposure homogeneity is critical given the amount of frames you need to process.
Thanks for this video. Chromatic aberration in Viltrox and no as such light advantage as you made us see. Getting close to subjects also for Fuji. But Fuji gives more film light light fill effect and Viltrox is dark shadows. So instead of costly 35mm F1.4 Fujifilm with motor sound, I think 35mm F.2 is great. Does Fujifilm has focus breathing issue? I am planning to get XE-4 with 35 mm instead of 27mm kit lens.
Did you mention weather resistance? (I might have missed it.) I limit my kit to WR Fuji lenses, as I do a lot of hiking, travel, and outdoors exploration. For me, a weather resistant lens is a necessity because of the reality of exposure to rain, sleet, and snow. Thanks as always for your excellent work.
I have the 35 f1.4 and it's a great lens albeit slow focusing but for those who are on a budget and want a faster lens, the XC 35 f2 looks like an interesting. I am still filling out the rest of my focal length lineup. But the XC since it performs as well as the XF version looks like it could be a good companion for my XF f1.4 for daytime street shooting.
I have the XC35mm - bought new when it came out and absolutely love it, really fast af sharp edge to edge even wide open - yeah its plastic but that doesn't bother me - no lens hood either but picked one up cheap all in all best £160 I spent.
Thanks for the honest review. I love the fuji lenses for their build quality and image quality and their second hand value. For me Viltrox is a cheap option but I'd rather save my money and get a fuji. I'd feel like my money was well spent and I wont be replacing it a year later.
I've been waiting for this review; the boke quality was something I was a little concerned about from a very early review but it does look very good. With all that said, I probably will still side with the F2 WR as I tend to visit my mom in Seattle during the winter/rainy season and we tend to hike around forests
So yeah. The Fuji 35mm f2 is pricey, but the performance, the size and build quality outruns the competitor from Viltrox. For a beginner the price difference can be the thing to choose the Viltrox, but I'd still recommend the Fuji to them because it will please them more when they are getting more experienced and want to get more out of their photography. Also it's probably a better starting point to start with f2 lenses, because otherwise the rabbit hole of "needing" big aperture (1.4 and bigger) lenses is way to easy to fall in to, once they are used to that.
i think im getting the 35mm f2. might get the viltrox 56 or 23 to have ONE viltrox prime in my bag. i got the fuji 16mm 1.4 as my only prime at the moment.
I have a 35 mm F1.4. I sold in about 35 mm F2. I didn’t like it a lot of distortion. And I miss the images from the 1.4. I disagree with you I think it has an amazing way that it renders images. I sold the F2 and got another f1.4 and I’m glad I did.
what do you prefer about the f1.4 and not the f2.0? I'm looking for a lens that can do street photography and I'm hesitating between the viltrox, fuji 35mm f1.4 or f2.0
Ibrahima SOW I’ve had both and I came to the conclusion I simply liked the way the F1.4 rendered subjects. There is a lot of distortion with the F .28, yes it is fixed in Camera but it’s still there. I like having the extra stop of light. And there’s just something about the way the photos look with it that I like better. Yes it does focus a bit slower but I’ve never missed a photo with it. The only problem I have with it is in really low light sometimes. And yes you can hear it when it focuses but that is minimal. It’s all very subjective but if I only could have one Fuji lynn’s this would be it. And I’ve had and do have some of their great lenses.
All photos were shot with an in-camera "recipe" based on Fuji X Weekly's Kodachrome Vintage. It's my new favorite "pre" processing. The light on the left is a tungsten balanced LED behind me. I usually have it more of a rim light, but had it too far forward this time. :)
Hi. Wondering with Fuji relaxing access to tech is there any info around on possible smart adaptor Nikon to Fuji I am a Nikon FF user transitioning over to Fuji and would like to use some of my G glass
Nothing officially supported, but I just read about a new autofocus adapter made by a third party company that's supposed to be not bad. Look on fujirumors.com
Terrible at f/1.4. I ruined a very important pro shoot using it wide open. Needed to do extreme sharpening and tons of grain to compensate. Needs to be shot at f/2.8 for reasonable sharpness. The Fujifilm 35 mm f/1.4 is so much better.
I got this lens recently, and had to return it after a few days. While it is indeed a quick, silent and seemingly well-built lens, it falls apart in any high-contrast situations. The Chromatic Aberration was pretty disappointing, and so was the Purple Fringing on any specular highlights. Just weight and hand-feel alone is no indicator of quality, and we need to move away from this line of thinking - it's too easy to make things heavier to give them a 'premium' feel, it does not mean the engineering inside is well thought-out. Don't know if it was the lens formula, coatings or just a newer company who may need to learn more and get more experience, but even at $270, it's not a great option. Maybe f1.4 is a bridge too far and it would be good stopped down, but then why send a product out that won't do acceptably well on it's headline feature??
The issue with third party lenses in the Fujifilm ecosystem is the Fujifilm itself. They making good lenses and situation is same if you going to shop 7artisan lenses and put them on a Leica M10 P. To be honest I don't see much of the competition for Fuji when Sigma or Tamron step in .Maybe on a long tele end but normal primes are no match to Fujifilm fast glass.
Good vedio I do have now 32mm Zeiss and fuji 35mm 1.4 with my Fuji xt3 is that lenes better than both of them by the way the 35mm 1.4 focus very fast with xt3 but I use only for photos day times. Thanks

35mm f1.4 is a classic. The F2’s not too shabby as well
Hey Andrew, one thing I miss from you reviews is the Manual Focus ring. If it's mechanical, focus by wire and so on
Great and helpful review. Thanks a lot!
Thumbs up for Frog and Toad test chart.
i love my Sigma on my sony a6400. switching to Fuji XT4 that i ordered, as soon as it arrives to me! definitely considering a Viltrox lens and hoping Sigma joins the Fuji mount now that they are opening their system to 3rd parties. But yeah, viltrox seems to have several coming out this year, huh?
there the 23mm too from them, m so pleased finally for my xH1
Thx for debunking the hype of that lens. I own the 35f2... will keep it and go for the 35 1.4R if I feel the "call of the bokeh" :)
Ordered one of these to go with my X-T3. Only thing I am concerned about is the clickless aperture ring.
thegeneral123 I am also worried about the clickless aperture ring, i mean...for less than 300$ (about 260-280) you can get a mostly decent 50mm eq.
How about the Touit 32/1.8 from Zeiss? Really saturated jpegs with it on FUJIFILM cameras though.
ZEISS 32mm is your baby then F1.8 and super sharp. (but a bit on the expensive side.
Edit: It would be super helpful if you could post sample images for us to peep ourselves, RUclips compression isnt the best to judge with
Tolerances are particularly inconsistent, historically, with Chinese manufacturers. You will most definitely see variance.
The link in the description goes to 23mm 1.4 instead of 33mm 1.4
Thanks
did you get the 23mm yet from Viltrox??
Any chance Viltrox sent you the 23mm as well? Can we expect a review of that one in the near future?
They seem to be divvying up the 23mm, 33mm and 56mm among creators. I haven't heard that they have any plans to send me the others.
Not weather sealed, no
I have the 35 f1.4 and it's a great lens albeit slow focusing but for those who are on a budget and want a faster lens, the XC 35 f2 looks like an interesting.
I would LOVE for this to be released for EF-M
The Canon 32 1.4 is a really awesome lens if you haven’t checked it out. A bit more expensive than the viltrox but really excellent and very small.
looking at viltrox 33mm and fuji 35mm f2 pictures, i guess there are more than 2mm difference )) thank you so much for a review~!
Thank you.
Not a big enough difference, improvement for me to leave my F2.
That crucial 1 sec of exposure changing does sound like a deal breaker. Sad, i was hoping for a cheaper alternative not to buy the xf35 f2.
Fuji XC 35 f/2?
Not sure if anyone mentioned this but I think youtube screwed up your video during the upload. Stuffs really blown out.
Naw. It's just me being off this time.
Andrew & Denae ah XD.
i think im getting the 35mm f2. might get the viltrox 56 or 23 to have ONE viltrox prime in my bag. i got the fuji 16mm 1.4 as my only prime at the moment.
So in low light use it's more of a 1.8 or a 1.6? That's an interesting deal-breaker for me. I was hoping to sell the 35f1.4, but I like the light.
Hope you will review the XC 35mm as well.
Andrew Which one would you get? Fuji 35mm f2 xc or viltrox 33mm f1.4? As a starter lens? I just got a brand new xs10
Are they gonna send you the 23mm f1.4?? I'm really interested in it but it's only available on their store website right now
Unclear. They seem to be sending their three new lenses out randomly to different creators.
How does it compare to the sigma 30f 1.4?
I saw an article stating that these viltrox lenses will scratch the x pro3 lens release button-area! Have you mounted this on your x pro3?
How does the autofocus behave in the video?
I will definetely buy it!!! At last! A non clickable aperture ring! I prefer it as I'm an hybrid shooter
please compare this lense with xf 35mm f1.4
How's the Viltrox 33mm compared to Fuji XC 35mm?
Were the photos of the dog color graded? They look fantastic. Was that sunlight hitting Andrew's face on the left side of the video?
All photos were shot with an in-camera "recipe" based on Fuji X Weekly's Kodachrome Vintage. It's my new favorite "pre" processing. The light on the left is a tungsten balanced LED behind me. I usually have it more of a rim light, but had it too far forward this time. :)
You should make an update regarding the new firmware fixing your main problem
that's the plan. Not enough hours in a day
Hi. Wondering with Fuji relaxing access to tech is there any info around on possible smart adaptor Nikon to Fuji
I am a Nikon FF user transitioning over to Fuji and would like to use some of my G glass
Nothing officially supported, but I just read about a new autofocus adapter made by a third party company that's supposed to be not bad. Look on fujirumors.com
Can this lens be used on the XPRO-3? Isn't there a compatibility issue that would serve as a caution to purchasing it?
check out the 23 f1.4 from Viltrox, would be interested in this
Terrible at f/1.4.
Thanks
Ok then. I can now keep my mind busy on a used 35mm f2 XF or a new 35mm XC 🤔😄
