I had a big smile on my face watching this video. Thank you for sharing your beautiful family with us! For me, I documented the first two years of my son's life using an x100v. It let me stay near him for safety, and it could focus nice and close. But autofocus was...a challenge :) Now he's three, and I've switched to an X-T5. What a revelation for autofocus, particularly AF-C eye tracking! I've been using it with the old 56 f1/2, which produces stunning images, but just like you said, gets me farther away than I'd like. Also using the 35 f/2...but it's missing something. Finally ordered a 33, and I can't wait to see what I can capture with it!
Sold! I've been shooting with fujay for over a decade and now I have a newborn and was specifically looking for the most appropriate portrait lens to pair with the xt50. Thank you!.
I love this lens, I just wish it was a bit smaller, i sold off my Sony stuff and came to Fuji for the form factor, same as you to carry around during family trips, I gravitate more towards the 18mm f2
for me this THE BEST "50mm" there is. It gives me the same quality iam used to on Fullframe. Its super fast on the XT4 and works brilliantly on the XE4. (i dont mind it beeing "unbalanced" with the small XE body as some might find - i shoot with both hands anyway)
Agreed. This lens is the default on my X-T5. I’ve always liked the 50mm equiv POV for capturing my family, as it removes clutter (both literal and figurative) from the frame. This one delivers the highest quality in that regard. I barely use my 35f2 anymore, which was my previous favorite.
Well, I just have de 18 mmf2 and the 35 mmf2 for the price of one of the new 1.4 lenses. So I can have best of both of your favorite focal lenses for half the price. They’re small and more unconspicuous. So, I have fun shooting with them.
Nice video! I own both the 18 1.4 and the 33 1.4. Thus I own last years best Fuji lens and this years best Fuji lens! Lol! I now also own the Viltrox 75 1.2. Love all three. That’s my entire kit paired with an XT5. Could not be happier! Thank you for the content!
I've had both the 18mm 1.4 and the 33mm 1.4 and sold them both. Purchased the new 23mm 1.4 LM WR and found that I can get similar looking shots as both the 18mm and 33mm by just moving around a bit with my feet and/or cropping, and it negates the need to carry two lenses with me (no one likes swapping primes around constantly). I then purchased used copies of the 18mm f/2 and 35mm 1.4 for pretty low prices and found that I gravitate towards these lenses more are they are just so much more practical due to the significantly reduced size and weight. On an X-T5 body, the AF performance is pretty satisfactory for both lenses. These days, I only use the 23mm 1.4 LM WR when I care about critical sharpness and just want to carry around one lens (and let's face it, for most family documentary style photos, we as photographers are the only ones who really care about pixel-level sharpness, microcontrast, CA, etc. - no other family members will be able to tell the difference!). Even the 18mm f/2 can be pretty sharp stopped down in combination with a decent RAW processor (such as DXO PureRaw 3) if I *really* needed that additional detail. Ultimately, I find these new Fuji primes amazing in terms of IQ, but they really feel less practical for casual day-to-day use due to the increased size and weight, which takes away from the original Fujifilm ethos.
Reggie you superdad - your comments about shooting children being the hardest test of AF is so spot-on I nearly spit out my coffee with joy. Want a real AF test? Shoot a kid swinging. Its so simple, so common, and yet so hard. IMO the 23mm is better in this respect as it focuses a little closer and, being a little wider, puts you in safe "parenting" distance to the child whether looking for close-ups or "scenes". Not to mention, the little kids do not tend to stray far enough away from me for me to use anything longer. As they grow up the focal length will increase. : ) The other point to make is that shooting little kids like you're being paid for it WILL make you better photographer - arguably it is harder than shooting pro sports or wildlife because they are even more unpredictable. I definitely figured out how to get the most of the XT3 AF system this way and, no joke, I've gone full pre-shot ES 20fps CH bursting to get the (or rather "a") shot. It is a pain culling hundreds of photos for a few moments, but sometimes that is what it takes . . . BTW even with the 56mm WR "slow" lens, I've caught some amazing stuff doing short high speed bursts.
Reggie, I am with you on this one! I too love the 18mm f1.4, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 33mm! I had both of these on a body each for my last wedding. When importing my images, I imported the 18mm first, and I was making comments (talking to myself) like "Wow, this lens and focal length is so good! These Images are so great"... Then, after importing the 33mm straight after, I was like "Ah ok... This 33mm is actually way nicer". There is just something special about it! Good news is, they are the perfect combination to have on a body each for a wedding or event, so I am pretty stoked about that! Thanks for the video. I really appreciate your work.
Not my favorite focal length, but you made me think. Lovely photos and such a treat to see beautiful color instead of the currently fashionable faded prints from a shoebox look.
I bought the new 23 when it came out to replace my mk1 23/1.4 and loved it; especially how clean the images are at night and low-light. Then got the 33 and it has that edge in terms of bokeh with its longer focal length. Love it and it is one of the first 50mm equivalents I love. Have only tried the 18/1.4 for a quick session -- the aperture ring is a bit lose there but images come out very nice. Got the Voigtlander 18mm (the new one for x mount) which is insanely small but then the infinity sharpness does not compare to Fuji. Probably need this 18 too haha. Enjoy your 33!
Recently decided to jump back into Fuji, I mainly shoot Sony. But for now I’ll enjoy the 50mm manual focus I got for myself and then maybe next paycheck get the 33mm. I love what I’m seeing here. I come from a XT2 back ground so I can’t wait to see what’s new.
I went with the 35mm f2 for the smaller size but almost got this lens. May revist that purchase in the future. Also the Spy x Family and AoT clothing, people of culture I see lol
When I first switched to the Fuji system, I went straight to the latest 18 1.4, and 33 1.4 primes. After a year with Fuji, I ended up selling the new lenses and replaced them with the older 16 1.4, 35 1.4 and 60 2.4. I much prefer the rendering of the old Fuji lenses vs the new ones, but the thing that REALLY annoyed me about the new lenses is the rattling of the LM focusing group. The old Fuji lenses have no such rattling.
it's my main lens for wedding/baptism event photography. like 80% of shots. using it with sigma 56 and viltrox 13. looking into buying 75 1.2 viltrox next.
Hi, Reggie! I've just got this lens, I'm a fan of this focal and sometimes I was needing more light speed than what the 35 F2 was giving me so I've just taken advantage of hot sale promotion in my country. May I ask what lens hood are you using?
Hey Reggie it’s me again, I think I’m giving up on getting my hands on the x100v but idk if you mentioned what body you used the lens on cuz that’s def gonna be what I’m getting. This video encapsulated the entire reason why I stopped lugging around a7riv, m50 and d5300 so I been around the block. My main subjects would by my child and potential clients for editorial photography. So ergonomics and light travel is a must. XT30 or xt5?
I'm not sure about the microcontrast commentary. Microcontrast is the ability to differentiate the subtle movements of hues within a gradient of that hue. Typically the more lens elements you have, the more the light spectrum will become diffused. Shining three coloured lights through one pane of glass you can see the three distinct colours. Shining them through 13 panes of glass it becomes tougher to see where one colour starts and another ends. The technical aspect to achieve this is a molded center element without having too many additional corrective elements. This is why the 18mm F2, 35mm F1.4 and 60mm have their distinctive looks. In a head to head of 15 images from the 35mm and from the 33mm, without labels..i could spot the difference in 14 out of 15. The downside is that in having less elements, things like abberations, ghosts and flares become more present. These differences are subtle, but the 33mm, although it has good colour rendering doesn't have the same rendering as the 35. For most people this won't be deal breaker, but microcontrast is a lens quality at an engineering level. Leica has made a legacy out of creating lens with this vintage engineering formula, hence why lens like the zeiss sonar etc all rely on typically 7 elements with a aspeherical molded element right in the center. The 33 is more clinical, slightly less hue fidelity and has almost no micro contrast compared to the 35mm. Its sharper, but doesn't have the qualities you're saying are present. It simply can't from an engineering level. That was the compromise. To achieve the sharpness without obscene fringing etc the micro contrast and hue fidelity were toned right down. I appreciate this is a hands on review, but having used both for food, the 33mm doesn't have any micro contrast..but it also doesn't have the obnoxious close distance lateral fringing the 35 has either and does have giant green flares in backlighting the 35 has either.
@@Reggiebphoto There is your true colour. "My goal is to educate.." Type in "Microcontrast in lens design." The first 7 videos are all about low element count and aspherical element position. Eduvcation typically involves at least the very basic research. I can see why you left the creator program. The 33mm is the go to lens if you don't want micro-contrast...which you claim is in abundance.
Hi Reggies, I've been following your channel recently and I'm in amazement at the content, advice and explanations you give to everyone. I will be in London next week and I was wondering if you have time to give me some tips on how to set up my xt5 lens 18mm f1.4 to take night shots of the city. Bye and good light.
Reggie. Are you sure you want to give up your Fuji Ambassador position? I just love your Fuji info videos; very informative, very educational. Thanks for taking the time and putting in the effort to produce these videos. $800 on this Fuji 33mm f1.4 lens however, it's a bit steep for me. Here's a suggestion for a future video. How about trying out the Viltrox 33mm f1.4, then make a comparison. The reviews are extremely close on Amazon - Fuji 4.8 stars; Viltrox 4.7. However, the Viltrox is $279; that's 65% cheaper. Thanks.

Hi Reggie, new follower here and new to the Fuji system. Just wondering if you have tried the Zeiss Touit 32mm F1.8 and if yes how does it compare to the Fuji 33mm f1.4? I believe some who love the Zeiss Touit also uses it because of the very unique character of the Zeiss lens.
Great review and photo philosophy !!!. Now I'm torn between this and the 23mm f/1.4 for street photography. Loved the pics of the child with the giant camera!
They're both so great value lenses. Try the one you might get cheaper first and plan to get the second if you've saved again enough money while perfecting your style with the first lens you have got. 😁

I have the XT5 with 56mm and I m looking for a next lens. I have been thinking to get the 23mm. It will be for wedding and family shoots. After seeing your great video I'm hesitating. What do you advise?
I’ve been shooting weddings for 24 years, using nearly everything. Started in film, obviously… I agree that the Cinebloom filter helps make digital look better, but I ended up at 5% filters after starting with 10%. I also agree that the 18 f1.4, 33 f1.4, 56 f1.2 is the ideal trio for weddings. I have the new 23mm f1.4 WR for personal work. I will say that as someone who has shot Fujifilm for a combined 8 years (started with Fujifilm in 2012 with thje X-Pro1 + 18/2, 35/1.4 and 60/2.4), the “romance” around the original 35 f1.4 is mostly illusion. It’s slow, noisy, moves while focusing and doesn’t offer the resolution of the new 33 f1.4. I’ve compared them side by side and the “character” is the same. Everything in the 33 is better than the 35 f1.4. If someone wants a cheap, small 35, I’d prefer the 35 f2 over the original 35… www.bradleyhanson.com
My travel combo is the 18 F1.4 and the 33 F1.4 (especially when I visited relatives back in the Philippines). Thanks for highlighting the attributes of the 33 F1.4.
Thanks for comparing 56 and 33 with father and child distance perspective. its hard for me to understand why the kit Lence ius not good enough for this. Is it size and quality benefit with this prime? Please can anyone help, me with this?
Awesome video! Love your pictures :)) I totally agree with you on this lens - it is amazing ❤ Since this focal length has always been a fav of mine , I knew that I wanted to get one when coming over from Nikon to Fujifilm in 2020. Tried first the 35mm 1.4 - amazing IQ, but slooow and noisy. Then I got the 35mm F2.0 - a great little lens , quick and very handy. But I still longed for something a little brighter, and with a little more "character" (Have always had a 50mm 1.4 on Nikon). So when they released this one - I just knew that I had to get it. And I was really lucky to get one used in mint condition for a very low price. Its just awesome - and I also think everyone should own this lens :)
Now I'm totally confused! lol. You had me sold on 23 1.4 and now.....what am I to do? lol. Is the 33 that much better than the 23 1.4? Image quality wise..

Nice video, thanks! I agree, I love the lens, too....or I did when I shot Fuji and owned it..:) It was the lens I kept the longest and didn´t want to give up although I was not shooting Fuji anymore. Got it! I love the 33 1.4, and the 18 1.4 compliments it big time! 🖖
What do you love more between the two?
Your video and blog sold me on this lens. Technically this doesn't mean I'll have 2 primes with same focal length, as 33 clearly isn't 35.
I love this lens, I just wish it was a bit smaller, i sold off my Sony stuff and came to Fuji for the form factor, same as you to carry around during family trips, I gravitate more towards the 18mm f2
Rock with what is most comfortable for you! 🤘🏽
Same feeling had Sony a7iv with 35 gm. Fujis small form factor is awesome.
So what's the more affordable version?
for me this THE BEST "50mm" there is. It gives me the same quality iam used to on Fullframe. Its super fast on the XT4 and works brilliantly on the XE4. (i dont mind it beeing "unbalanced" with the small XE body as some might find - i shoot with both hands anyway)
totally. it's not super unbalacned if you hold with two hands.
Agreed. This lens is the default on my X-T5. I’ve always liked the 50mm equiv POV for capturing my family, as it removes clutter (both literal and figurative) from the frame. This one delivers the highest quality in that regard. I barely use my 35f2 anymore, which was my previous favorite.
Thanks for the insight Chris! I'm glad my video title holds based on your experience.
Great video not just for the review but how you show its uses. Thanks for this and shot out to you and your Family. Peace.
Well, I just have de 18 mmf2 and the 35 mmf2 for the price of one of the new 1.4 lenses. So I can have best of both of your favorite focal lenses for half the price. They’re small and more unconspicuous. So, I have fun shooting with them.
The af is the main selling point of the 18 1.4 and 33 1.4. So not quite. But those lens are good for the money 🙌🏽
Psst.. the 13mm viltrox is also a great addition to the kit your already have :)
Just when I said I am not buying any more lenses!…
Just picked up the 33mm too and it’s awesome. I also have the 18mm f1.4 and these are my 2 go to lenses for everything.
Same!
Reggie...Do you recommend this lens for the X-T3? Also...did you compare with the Viltrox f/1.4 line up?
Reggie you superdad - your comments about shooting children being the hardest test of AF is so spot-on I nearly spit out my coffee with joy. Want a real AF test? Shoot a kid swinging. Its so simple, so common, and yet so hard. IMO the 23mm is better in this respect as it focuses a little closer and, being a little wider, puts you in safe "parenting" distance to the child whether looking for close-ups or "scenes". Not to mention, the little kids do not tend to stray far enough away from me for me to use anything longer. As they grow up the focal length will increase. : )
The other point to make is that shooting little kids like you're being paid for it WILL make you better photographer - arguably it is harder than shooting pro sports or wildlife because they are even more unpredictable.
100% - my preferred focal length tends to be the 18 for that safe parenting distance.
Have both and my set up never get more complete. Roll on trips and weddings this season!🎉
amazing. such a dynamic duo
I really appreciate your work.
yup, a perfect pair.
although if you want a 33mm you'd have to get an 18mm because of the crop sensor fujifilm has. this lens is actually a 50mm 1.4
Yup.
sold my 35 f2 for this just a few days ago, and boy, i did not dissapoint ❤
100%. Never have missed my 35mm f/1.4 for one minute after i picked this one up.
@@Reggiebphoto I was thinking to get the 35 1.4 kasi it was cheaper but opted to buy the 33 1.4 after watching comparisons. 🤙
I fell in love with my 33mm. Best purchase so far. Also your kids are sooooo adorable!!!
Thanks, I agree. But I'm biased.
Probably the best lens I've ever owned. It's soldered onto my XT5.
Pinoy pics are heart warmers. May they have a wonderful life.
I believe this is definitely Fujifilms best ever lens in terms of quality versatility and speed of focus and my favourite lens ever
yup yup!
I went with the 35mm f2 for the smaller size but almost got this lens. May revist that purchase in the future. Also the Spy x Family and AoT clothing, people of culture I see lol
haha, yes. My wife has got me back into anime :)
The rattling is when the magnets are not engaged. It’s by design
Reggie beautiful family man and great job capturing these moments
Are you shooting Raw and using some of your presets?
it's my main lens for wedding/baptism event photography. like 80% of shots. using it with sigma 56 and viltrox 13. looking into buying 75 1.2 viltrox next.
How do you like that Sigma 56?
Hi, Reggie! I've just got this lens, I'm a fan of this focal and sometimes I was needing more light speed than what the 35 F2 was giving me so I've just taken advantage of hot sale promotion in my country. May I ask what lens hood are you using?
It’s the hood for the 23mm f1.4 v2
Ok
@@Reggiebphoto There is your true colour. "My goal is to educate.." Type in "Microcontrast in lens design." The first 7 videos are all about low element count and aspherical element position. Eduvcation typically involves at least the very basic research. I can see why you left the creator program. The 33mm is the go to lens if you don't want micro-contrast...which you claim is in abundance.
Hello sir. Where did you buy the lens hood?😊
Hope to get this lens some day. Right now, it's not in my budget!! Love your examples here. Have a great day!
Thanks for tuning in Charlie
I relly like my XF 18 but this one XF 33 1.4 is my most used lens for photography;)
haha, it's a toss up. but i think you have the same feelings as me.
This video had such a documentary feel! Great work!
Oh wow, that's a great compliment :)

My night city shot tips
Thanks.
I did a video on it before
@@Reggiebphoto My bad; I missed that video because it was done over 2 years ago. Btw I'm not an Insta guy, I use 500px to display my work, but I was super impressed with your Insta Profile. What a great approach - education. I would've never thought of doing something like that. Congrats!
🙌🏽
Hi Reggie, new follower here and new to the Fuji system. Just wondering if you have tried the Zeiss Touit 32mm F1.8 and if yes how does it compare to the Fuji 33mm f1.4? I believe some who love the Zeiss Touit also uses it because of the very unique character of the Zeiss lens.
Nope I haven’t
I got the 33 shortly after release and yeah, it's amazing.
It really is. What type of photo/video do you shoot?
@@Reggiebphoto I shoot tons of stuff! Street, landscapes, product. Some review videos and hobby related stuff :)
Reggie, do you use the 10% cinebloom when you shoot weddings?
I don’t shoot weddings anymore
Great review and photo philosophy !!!. Now I'm torn between this and the 23mm f/1.4 for street photography. Loved the pics of the child with the giant camera!
It just comes down to focal length preferences.
They're both so great value lenses. Try the one you might get cheaper first and plan to get the second if you've saved again enough money while perfecting your style with the first lens you have got. 😁
Fantastic review. Does the metal lens hood fit a standard sized filter underneath?
Yup.
Love the way you explain your experience with the lens. Very descriptive and easy to “imagine” thanks buddy! 👍
thank you. i'm trying to integrate more storytelling to convey my points instead of just saying it. and when i can just say it, i'd rather show imagery.
Having just bought the XT5 … I came here looking at this to compliment it, I’m pretty close but … I’m primarily street … so honest thoughts please? 😊
Love your content Reggie! Keep up the great work! This is my next lens!
You won't regret it. Use my links if you want to support.
the xf 33mm f1.4 rocks!
And I know you tried them all. I glad you agree!
The 18mm is insanely good for so many reasons and occasions. So if you’re gonna put this lens over THAT one?? I’m gonna have to see about this for myself. Thanks for the push 🫡
18, 24, or 33? I'm completely moving from Sony and can only afford 1 lens.
I’d start with 33
Have had my eyes on this thing as an alternative to the 35mm F2 and you're not helping my GAS any😂 they're dang near impossible to scoop right now. Great content! Much love from East Tennessee🙏🏼
haha, sorry. i warned you in the title :)
Love the intro sequence ;)
Yes!! Fits in nicely. Thanks for working your retro magic 🪄
Always brother! 🙌 Thank you for the opportunity
Is that the original lens hood that comes with the 33?
I have the XT5 with 56mm and I m looking for a next lens. I have been thinking to get the 23mm. It will be for wedding and family shoots. After seeing your great video I'm hesitating. What do you advise?
23mm is great I just got the F2.
@@MiLLz830 is all what you need
Brilliant video! Thank you for sharing♥️
You are right. 35 f2 is overall better choice especially for casual shooting
This is reminding me of how much I used to shoot my 35mm f/1.4 and now I'm REALLY tempted to get the 33. I love the shots you've made with it! 🫶🏻
Thanks!
The 18 and 33 together is - my setup 99% of the time
amazing! what camera bodies are you using?
@@Reggiebphoto right now XT5 and Xpro2 :)
My travel combo is the 18 F1.4 and the 33 F1.4 (especially when I visited relatives back in the Philippines). Thanks for highlighting the attributes of the 33 F1.4.
I bought the Vilrox 33 1.4.. Very sharp lens and is cheaper than Fuji's.
Yup, I’ve tried that lens and covered it on my channel. I couldn’t cope with the lack of close focus ability
Gosh, I want this lens so much now!!!
Thanks for comparing 56 and 33 with father and child distance perspective. its hard for me to understand why the kit Lence ius not good enough for this. Is it size and quality benefit with this prime? Please can anyone help, me with this?
Never said it wasn’t good enough. I just prefer prime lenses
the difference between 33mm and 35mm in terms of viewfield has to be minimal, right?
Agree on all points!
Glad you agree!
I agree with you. What camera do you use it with?
@@Reggiebphoto Fujifilm XH2s :)

Nice video, thanks! I agree, I love the lens, too....or I did when I shot Fuji and owned it..:) It was the lens I kept the longest and didn´t want to give up although I was not shooting Fuji anymore. For what I mostly do I figured full frame is just better and the Canon RF 50mm f1,2...oh yes...but honestly, I´d have no problem going back to Fuji and their new primes (18mm f1,4 33mm f1,4 and the new 56mm f1,2 wr) It´s such a nice system and very affordable compared to FF!
100%. For full frame canon cannot be beat!
