This is exactly the reason Roman’s opinion sound so genuine and trustworthy. If he would have been labeled as Fujifilm ambassador, that alone would drive people away (no matter whether Roman would stay honest or not) for obvious reason Brand ambassadors are probably the least trustworthy source to spend one’s time for I love Roman’s videos, how he keeps them simple, genuine and straightforward, unlike many other RUclipsers in the field of photography
Hey Roman. I really like your no-BS style of videos. You're honest, friendly and clearly know what you are talking about. I can trust what you say, which is high praise from me for anyone on the internet. Keep up the good work.
I really love the way you contextualize the photographs with the webcam footage. It’s a surprisingly insightful technique. Thanks also for the practical, no-nonsense review.
I’ve been transitioning towards the f1.4 primes for the look they have not necessarily the bokeh or low light. They definitely add a layer of character to your photos that take the digital edge off your photo. These new primes manage to have that same character but maintain a lot of contrast and sharpness. Very good on Fuji for making a lens more optically perfect without making it too clinical and boring.
I agree. I have the 35mm f2 and it's great for its size and weight, combined with the focal length it's great for family portraits and candids. But I never liked the color of the f2 that much, it's too flat and boring. The 16mm f1,4 on the other hand, is marvelous at color. I never thought I could like a lens just for something so small sounding as different colors. But I notice the nice contrast and punchy colors right away when I use the 16mm and it's why I use it so much for my photography. I am renting the 33mm f1,4 right now and it's also unique in it's color, yet I have to find a way to use it to my benefit. The color seems a lot cooler than on the 16mm f1,4 and 90mm f2.
@@BTMovieSecondChannel the 16mm is my favorite and best lens so far, also use it for astro photography. I have the kit 18-55 that I never use and want to trade it for this or the 35mm f1.4. I would like to get into more portrait and street photography. The other lens I was teetering on, and on my radar is the 56mm for portraits.. but not sure how much I will be able to get into and maybe in a situation where I will favor some background in my portraits. My other lens is the 70-300 for wildlife :)
The 35 f2 has been glued to my x-t3 for over a year and I absolutely love it, I recently got the 33 f1.4 and I've really enjoyed the phots and haven't touched the f2. I was thinking of keeping the f2 for a compact option if I ever get a smaller body but honestly feeling like it will stay on the shelf.
The 35mm f/2 is such a good lens. Technically it's just another basically 50mm FF equivalent, but when you use it, it definitely has some interesting character to it.
Hi, I have a question as a XT3 user as well. Do you use your XT3 combined with these 33mm and 35mm lenses to shoot video? If yes, do you personnaly see any stabilization issues thru the lack of Ibis on the XT3?
@@trezegol2007 I don't use them for video and honestly with no IBS or OIS It's going to be shaky, a gimbal or tripod is your only hope. I would highly recommend one of the zoom lenses that have OIS if your doing video with the X-T3
Just bought the 35mm f2 lens as my first lens outside the 18-55mm kit lens on the XT5 and the shots so far have been so great. The price of the 35mm f2 lens just keeps the funds in check incase I eventually want to grab the 33mm in the future
I find it great that you first have shot for one month before posting the review! Lot of reviewers just rushing into reviews to get more views.. Thank you!!
I've been watching your videos lately to get some in depth info on Fujifilm and they have been of great help, but what I found most pleasing in them are your images which I think are exceptional!!!
Thanks for the video. As usual you do a good job in not making us drown in a sea of specs and presets, I think in some ways the specs (i.e. of the 33 f1.4 an 35 f2) speak for themselves. What you correctly leave us with is the fact it's up to ourselves to figure out which one is better suited, I love the specs of the 33mm and the pics you took especially at night. It's obvious one can't take the same pics handheld with the 35mm. For me though the weight, and budget, are key elements so the 35mm would be my choice. By the way, you got to love that gentleman's smile at 11:28! He noticed you taking a pic but he trusted you he'd look good on it!👍😉
Thank you for the video. I particularly enjoyed the second part and the red ⭕ as a way to communicate your idea when shooting. Not the lense for me, too expensive and big for a Fuji prime.
been catching up on your back catalogue as I get to grips with my XT-4, thank you for the concise content and thank you for appreciating that there's more to photographic/cinematic image quality than pixel count and technical specs.
I recently swapped to this from the f2. I love it, I just like the feel of the images that I'm getting. I really wanted the low light performance, but I'm more enjoying the feel of the photos, surprisingly so.
Thank you for this review, Roman. I have been think about buying the 33mmf1.4 lens.( I have the 35mmf2 & have been very happy with it, especially for it’s price point.) I am interested in the 1.4 version for the extra stop of light & the background rendering (bokeh), particularly for portraits. I will probably go ahead & “pull the trigger” on this purchase as B&H is discounting the lens for $100.00 off the usual selling price. Cheers!😊
I just got this lens yesterday and shot with both it and my 35 f2. General scenes outdoors, low light indoors, and my 5-year-old son (challenging: I regret not taking that wildlife photography course). Other than the very slightly wider fov, the images are almost indistinguishable as far as sharpness and exactly the same with respect to color rendition. The 33 images are very, very slightly brighter, and there is also a slight improvement in autofocus acquisition, especially eye autofocus. It is certainly not "absolutely way better and no comparison with the f2" as you found. Maybe I got a poor 33 copy? I'm still within the window period of returning the lens.
Thats interesting. I found the 33 sharper then both F2 and 35 versions. Yeah its not heaps sharper but enough to justify for what I do Weddings and portraits. Also I found the eye/Face AF amazing and it didn’t miss a shot even wide open. Is it worth the money??? Personally I think its about 15-20% too expensive but if your already in the Fuji eco system and u want to provide the best IQ to yourself and customers then u will buy it. But maybe u should get urs checked out, Fuji normally have a good service record at the very least they can check if the optics are calibrated.
They’re very close in sharpness when shooting from medium to distant subjects. Close up subject are rendered quite a bit sharper on the 33mm f1.4 though.
I was originally going to sell the 18-55mm kit lens for the 16-55mm lens but I personally think it just seems a bit too big and heavy. I find myself shooting at 35mm most of the time, very rarely ever going to 18mm and this lens isn’t much of a change in size & weight. I will have to think it over for longer because going from a zoom to fixed is scary lol
Great review and photos Roman! Yes, I believe the lens has a higher resolving power to work with the X-H2 coming next year with a 40mp sensor (same for the new 18 & 23, & the new 56 coming next year)… Have a great day 👍🏼
I totally agree with you that there is something going on about that lens you can’t really put into words. Could the word be that it is very glassy? It’s like every picture is shot through a thick, clear window. And for me, I don’t like it. Im so glad you like it tho! The image that comes out of it is visually pleasing, however for me it’s too stylistic and lacks some natural tones to it. That’s me! It is however interesting and makes you wonder how they made the lens and with what intention. Thanks for such a casual, honest and good review!
I've been looking at this lens for my XPro3 and XH-1. Your comments about this lens and the 50-140mm, which I own, gives me pause about buying it. I'm not a pro, and of course the 50-140 is huge by comparison. But if the image quality is close I'm wondering if I should just live with the 50-140. Note I do own the 35mm f2, so if I need to go light I can. Ha, maybe sell the 35mm f2 to subsidize the 33mm f1.4. ;)
Nice one! I’m leaning towards the f1.4 (I already have the 23mm f2) in order to future proof but needs more time before I pull the trigger due to the cost. I enjoyed the video and great pics you’ve taken. Subscribed
Have you used the 56mm F1.2? I got to compare that with the50mm F1 and the 35mm f2. The 56mm just pantsed all of them. It has punchier color, sharpness and just an effortless look.
Is everything here shot on this lens including the video? Though night photography especially, is impressive. Because of you, I’m about to buy an XT4, coming from an XT3. Fuji is the best!
Nice review. Especially appreciate you trying to articulate the aspects of this lens' image quality. I'll probably try renting it, then depending on that experience, purchase.
I deliberated it as already pre-ordered a new 23mm 1.4f WR and have the 35mm f2 in lens set-up. Will hold fire until the new camera line is announced by Fuji in May. Not enough to tempt me right now but as a XT3 user, a move to a XT5 or XH2 (depending on what gets announced) with higher, poss 40 MP count may sway me..
Hi, which lens would you choose for image sharpness and budget if I shoot landscapes, portraits, and street photography? The 23mm f/1.4 R or the 33mm? For example, I want to photograph the King’s Lake in Bavaria and the main square in Munich. What would you recommend? It’s important to note that I already have an 18-55mm lens
I was expecting the lens to be more obtrusive than that (perhaps I've only ever seen it with the lens hood), it's still a fairly subtle look to walk around with. Also, still the most relaxing photo walk videos.
@@icyveins-24 Logically, it doesn’t make much sense keeping both. The 33mm, IMO, has the best form factor lens for the XPro3. It lays flat on the table and not as heavy as one might think. It is fast and quiet. The 35mm images, for me, has distinct difference in out-of-focus foreground and background. It exudes nostalgia especially in black & white images.
Just taken the leap and traded in my trusty 35mm f2 and 23mm f2 for the new 1.4s. They're incredible. Very different image quality to their 'predecessors' but liking the aesthetic so far. Now ready for the (not so secret) XH2 announcement in May 😁
At this point would you say that the cost difference between the 33 and the 35 f2 is worth it for an enthusiast with an X-T3? I don't foresee myself using the X-T3 for video... This was a cool video. Love seeing your night photography too BTW... Rock On!
hmmm it's hard to say because the real world brand new difference is £300. For something I will use all the time and keep for many years, it is not a big difference at all. However I am also lucky to live in a country where the currency is good and where I can have enough disposable income to not worry over £300.... I guess it's down to if £300 difference is a lot for you or not
Hi Mate. Thank you for your feedback. Could I know which settings you had used for the night shots? I like them very much and would like to replicate with my X-T3…Thank you for the support
Their best lens yet... among those you tried ;) I still see this as being behind my favourite (which you know) but this fits your style more so... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Is the focus ring electronically coupled to the lens, or is it free to move manually? I'm asking because I want to use a motorized auto follow focus (DJI RS2 system) for filming when I'm not using auto focus.
Made a mistake buying a 16 - 80mm with my new XT4 as a first time buyer, wish I saw your videos prior. Only been a couple of months and honestly not happy with it.
Thank you for the great video. What do you think will be better for street, this 33mm F1.4 or the upcoming 23mm 1.4? Something tells me to wait for 23mm 1.4 because I used more 23mm f2 that my 35 f2, but I really like your results here. Your opinion is valuable because I just saw your photos on Instagram you took with the new 23mm 1.4. Or maybe just to buy 18mm 1.4 and keep my existing 23/35 f2?
Thanks for the review! You really got some nice shots here. I'm thinking about selling my 35mm f/2 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses to get this one. How is the autofocus during video?
Thank you for the recommendation, I just got this lens and I do find it to be sharper (and better image quality) than all my f/2 primes or my two zooms, the 16-80 and the 70-300. Question, do you know if your presets will work on Affinity Photo or Luminar?
I just got the Fuji XT3 and the new 33mm F1.4 Fuji lens. When I am on Aperture priority mode I can see and hear the aperture blades constantly opening and closing. The lens makes a pretty distinct clicking noise constantly. However on the Fuji X100V the aperture blades are completely silent when opening and closing. Is there something wrong with the 33mm lens? Why is the 33mm making that clicking noise but the X100V is silent?
Great video mate! Looks like this really shines for night video as well, the footage looks great even after RUclips's smushing. Were you shooting wide open for video or stopped down a bit? Would love to know what you set your AF-C settings to as well...
Hi Roman! Should I buy 50-140mm f2.8 or 33mm f1.4. I own a XT-200, should I buy the 33mm f1.4 and save money for a new camera, or should I buy the 50-140mm f2.8?
When I see this kind of lenses I think that Apsc looses its best quality, compactness. I mean to have these 1.4 lenses between costs, weight and size, one doesn't have the advantages of Apsc. This is to say I keep my f2 lens
Hi Roman. I am using an Xt1 and on a budget but people say invest in glass. Weighing up 35 f2 against 33. Will the older tech of the xt1 have any bearing on results if I save for the 33? There seems to be a good few second hand 35 f2 out there. I like photo not video. Thanks. Your photos are really good by the way. Cheers
Hey bud. I shoot an XT1 as well on a 35mm F2 for the past I'd say 3-4 years and I've went everywhere in the world with it and honestly if you've never shot on a prime it would be so much different. I also primarily shoot photos. Also depends on your current set up. I started from the 18-55mm kit and was so used to 18mm and then zooming for close ups, but changing to a 35mm prime changed my entire style of shooting, learning to zoom with my feet. Price wise it would be so much different between the 2 ( thousands for the 33mm F1.4 WR and hundreds for the 35mm F2) for just a few stops of light and also bear in mind the size and the weight difference. The 35mm F2 is seriously so small and compact. The 33mm F1.4 wr is almost like the 18-55mm, albeit smaller. Lastly, I would implore you to also check out the 23mm focal length (35mm FF equivalent) if you've never used a prime and see if you like it better than the 35mm or 33mm (50mm FF equivalent). Everyone's upgrading from a XT-3 or and X-Pro 3 but here we are in 2022, still shooting with our XT-1s.
@@klmasi Hey thanks for taking the time to put that out there. Since my post I hired the new ish 33 1.4 and was pretty well blown away by how sharp it seemed and how quick and accurate the auto focus was compared to my 18 to 55. The 35 I haven't had a chance to try but it's so compact and all the reviews are awesome. Then comes the rub as the 1.4 kisses goodbye to a lot more cash when times are tight. Based on what you have recommended I might hire the 23 for some fun. You can get pretty reasonable deals as one company gives you a day rate for a whole weekend. At Xmas they shut down so I have had 4 weeks for the price of one in the past. It will be new year for me if I buy now. Might sell the 18 to 55 to help fund. Thanks again. Have a good one 👍
@@klmasi and yep still loving xt1. On you tube kentucky man has shot some great stuff with one though he has taken quite a few of his videos down which is a shame.
@@ianbridges7929 Love hearing that mate! 4 weeks as well for price of 1 day, what a bargain that was. Also I haven't tried the 33mm but I'll take your words for it, but for me an amateur to spend thousands on gear, without actually earning from it, I can't justify it. The 35mm I bought used as well for £400 many years ago, my guess is that it would be cheaper now. I would recommend you to keep the 18-55mm, that lens is amazing for what it is. The lens only get cheaper with time but you don't want to get stuck without a wide angle ish lens when it calls for it! Also I completely understand the financial situation for us right now. Based on what I read you sound English, and I know all too well the energy situation now in the UK. Food on the table first then everything else. All the best Ian, and God bless 🙌
Folk keep harping about the size and weight. It's actually (within a gnat's wing) the same size and weight as the 18-55mm and both share the same filter size. And with both in a camera bag it's a hard job to sort one from t'other. without peering closely. For interior work the low light performance and IQ is better than just very good. And if it's your thing, and if you try hard you can get really good sunbursts with it.
Question here please! Also being someone swapping from the 35mm f2, rather than from the 35mm f1.4 like most everyone else compares this lens to, and I'm noticing my 35mm f2 is substantially sharper than the new 33mm f1.4 I have, which yes is pixel peeping, but I like to be able to crop when necessary without worrying about quality loss, and want it to be future-proof.. Did I get a dud or what's going on here do y'all think?
Some great images there, regardless of the lens. :) I just got my 33mm a week or 2 ago, and so far I'm loving it. I'll probably keep my 35mmF2 though just for when I want to go as light/compact as possible.
Great video, just my 2 cents worth regarding capture one, yes everything u say is correct, but I just thought I add, for the life of me I just can’t get my images as sharp and with same clarity using Adobe. I prefer ADOBE also but have tried every sharpening/clarity setting, tried different profiles but my images appear clearer in Capture one, I will go to say the Fuji images actually look the same with my Full frame files and sometimes better. But unfortunately I don’t get the same IQ with adobe, yes u do have to zoom into 100% before u notice the differences but it’s something that u either sacrifice and keep using Adobe or put up with the extra time and learning curve and give Capture one the nod.
I don't get how Fujifilm has not brought you on as an ambassador yet!!!!!!!
Fujifilm should give a lot of money to this guy

Came for the review, but was surprised about your C1 vs LR comparison. I gave C1 a chance, but couldn’t get into a flow with it.
been waiting for this!
Have you used the 56mm F1.2?
I got to compare that with the50mm F1 and the 35mm f2.
The 56mm just pantsed all of them. It has punchier color, sharpness and just an effortless look.
The Ficus gets more time than the sponsor of the video 😁 Already a win! The looks on the new presets are dope.
Is everything here shot on this lens including the video? Though night photography especially, is impressive.
Because of you, I’m about to buy an XT4, coming from an XT3. Fuji is the best!
Nice vid Roman. Btw, the photo at 5:00 is from my hometown Izmir, Turkey. Have you been there?
yeah I have but only for a day or so. Need to go back
Nice review.
Just bought your preset pack and love it
Hi, which lens would you choose for image sharpness and budget if I shoot landscapes, portraits, and street photography? The 23mm f/1.4 R or the 33mm? For example, I want to photograph the King’s Lake in Bavaria and the main square in Munich. What would you recommend?
It’s important to note that I already have an 18-55mm lens
I got a xt-1 do you think an old camera like that would take benefit of using such a modern lens
you just sold me on the lens! (Considered this or the 35/2 and just sold my 35/1.4).
Tempted between this and the 16-55mm f2.8 red badge for my first additional lens purchase. Thinking about getting a new lens rather than a new phone.
My dear... No doubts! 😂 This lens is top notch! But it depends on your needs
what film simulation did you use in your photos? they're so nice!
I was expecting the lens to be more obtrusive than that (perhaps I've only ever seen it with the lens hood), it's still a fairly subtle look to walk around with.
Also, still the most relaxing photo walk videos.
Literally traded in three other lenses for this and haven't regretted it yet
Got this lens when it came out; I was using the 35 f/1.4. Thought I’d prefer one over the other, but no. I’m keeping both.
Hey just curious why would you keep them both, what would be different use cases?
@@icyveins-24 Logically, it doesn’t make much sense keeping both. The 33mm, IMO, has the best form factor lens for the XPro3. It lays flat on the table and not as heavy as one might think. It is fast and quiet. The 35mm images, for me, has distinct difference in out-of-focus foreground and background. It exudes nostalgia especially in black & white images.
@@DragonEye1911 got you thanks for the reply
You typically do 10-20 miles during a typical photo walk. I’m feeling pretty lazy. How many pictures do you usually take each walk?
between 200 and 800 ish depending on light and luck but only keep 10 max usually
Trying to figure out which would be more useful for photo and video of family friends travel and docs. 23 or 33 viltrox
Just taken the leap and traded in my trusty 35mm f2 and 23mm f2 for the new 1.4s. They're incredible. Very different image quality to their 'predecessors' but liking the aesthetic so far. Now ready for the (not so secret) XH2 announcement in May 😁
Great photos. Are they mostly in 1.4?
At this point would you say that the cost difference between the 33 and the 35 f2 is worth it for an enthusiast with an X-T3? I don't foresee myself using the X-T3 for video... This was a cool video. Love seeing your night photography too BTW... Rock On!
hmmm it's hard to say because the real world brand new difference is £300. For something I will use all the time and keep for many years, it is not a big difference at all. However I am also lucky to live in a country where the currency is good and where I can have enough disposable income to not worry over £300.... I guess it's down to if £300 difference is a lot for you or not
@@snapsbyfox Yeah, and it will be current for quite a long time as well. Thanks for the input.
Have you had a chance to try out the 18mm f1.4 yet?
Great review :) I totally agree - this lens is just superb !
I will definitely get this lens for video! Thanks!!
Great video ! How does this lens do with video ?
I think he said how it does with video in the video when he made video with it
Hi Mate. Thank you for your feedback. Could I know which settings you had used for the night shots? I like them very much and would like to replicate with my X-T3…Thank you for the support
Very nice shots at the end man.
Hey! Thanks for the video. What camera bag were you using? Thanks!
I really wish aps-c and micro4/3 would have rationalized their lens focal lengths, rather than constantly reference “full frame equivalents”.
Their best lens yet... among those you tried ;)
I still see this as being behind my favourite (which you know) but this fits your style more so... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Is the focus ring electronically coupled to the lens, or is it free to move manually? I'm asking because I want to use a motorized auto follow focus (DJI RS2 system) for filming when I'm not using auto focus.
Nice photo with the bird flying between the buildings.
Great video Roman
Made a mistake buying a 16 - 80mm with my new XT4 as a first time buyer, wish I saw your videos prior. Only been a couple of months and honestly not happy with it.
Please try the new 23mm f1.4 lm wr
phenomenal images
Great len. Hoping Fuji will update the current Fujicron lineup to Mark ii
good channel! do you use the fuji app? my first fuji is a xt4 and I can't it work in a useful and reliable way..
Did you use a diffusion filter for your photos?
Love the video! very tempted by this lens!
It's good for sure.... very expensive and deffo a luxury tho
Roman I realize you don't use the bulky lens hood designed for this lens. Do you find the hood useless?
nah it’s useful if it’s raining as it stoped most of the water hitting the glass and having blurry images
Thanks for the review! You really got some nice shots here. I'm thinking about selling my 35mm f/2 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses to get this one. How is the autofocus during video?
Enjoying my 33mm on my X-T3...very nice lens overall
Some nice shots there mate ....
Thank you for the recommendation, I just got this lens and I do find it to be sharper (and better image quality) than all my f/2 primes or my two zooms, the 16-80 and the 70-300. Question, do you know if your presets will work on Affinity Photo or Luminar?
Thank you, bravo, superb video
I just got the Fuji XT3 and the new 33mm F1.4 Fuji lens. When I am on Aperture priority mode I can see and hear the aperture blades constantly opening and closing. The lens makes a pretty distinct clicking noise constantly. However on the Fuji X100V the aperture blades are completely silent when opening and closing. Is there something wrong with the 33mm lens? Why is the 33mm making that clicking noise but the X100V is silent?
Pics, mind blown
Great video mate! Looks like this really shines for night video as well, the footage looks great even after RUclips's smushing. Were you shooting wide open for video or stopped down a bit? Would love to know what you set your AF-C settings to as well...
nah wide open and it was a mix of the 33 and the 18 1.4 - as for settings just default
@@snapsbyfox Cool, thanks! That 18mm is tempting for sure...
Hi Roman! Should I buy 50-140mm f2.8 or 33mm f1.4. I own a XT-200, should I buy the 33mm f1.4 and save money for a new camera, or should I buy the 50-140mm f2.8?
Suggest you tell us what type of photography you do the most; street, landscape, portrait etc etc.
@@christianpetersen1782 Car photography, street and some portrait from time to time
Great video. As always
I’m very interested - what focus settings do you use for street ? Continues + zone ? :)
Is this video filmed with it too? 🎥
the B roll at night is a mix of the 33 and 18 1.4
@@snapsbyfox 👍
Thank you for the video!
I'll probably keep my 35mmF2 though just for when I want to go as light/compact as possible.
yeah I did think that too, but the secret minimalist in me can't keep both haha
@@snapsbyfox Yeah, I'm about to that point where it's time to cull the collection, so we'll see... 🙂
Good Job, these new primes are cracking lenses.
