Hi reggie. In your opinion, will that minimum focus distance difference matter during an actual event shoot? I mean does event shoots usually require you to shoot upclose using the 23mm 1.4? Thanks
Fuji has some lens correction in the RAW file, so it’s not really a fair comparison in my view. I have been using the Fuji 23 1.4 for about two years and don’t really have any complaints with it. More than sharp enough for my taste. It feels nice in the hand and has a perfect size.

Thanks for the comparison, do you have an X-Pro3 you could mount the Viltrox on? Apparently the release button on the Pro3 might rub against the lens, and Viltrox say the body is not compatible. Others say no issue.
So, I was planning to get the 23mm f2 and 50mm f2... or so I thought. Then I saw that Viltrox's 23mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.4 are on sale for $260 each for prime day, which is very tempting compared to used Fujicrons for $300+ each. I know that they are similar in focal lengths but differ in other ways (extra stop of light, weather resistance, size, aperture ring, and etc). I know Fuji's f1.4 versions are magical, but I prefer to not spend that kind of money at the moment (plus with kids and dogs, I prefer faster AF). Any first hand thoughts and feedback on one vs the other?

Reggie this is great! Awesome job on this video!! I would say that it deserves to be even more emphasized that the Viltrox is dirt cheap and has a great build which wasn't mentioned. I know you were looking more at IQ than anything, but the price of the Viltrox alone is mindblowing considering that Fuji is still charging south of $1K for their lens. At $300~, the Viltrox is neck and neck with the Fuji in many aspects and above in others (better center sharpness, metal lens hood, update-able firmware, etc). I don't think the Fuji is a recommended buy for any non-professional because of this. But I get it, for pros, yeah, you might want the Fuji due to all the things you mentioned.
I have the Viltrox 23 1.4 and Fuji 23 f2. I need fast AF for video, I have to say both lens work great for fast AF, however... The Fuji f2 can do smooth pulls between subjects and Viltrox is just fast fast fast, even after playing with the settings. When you try to make Viltrox focus slow, it doesn't work very smoothly. It is a great lens though for the money and I plan on keeping both, Fuji f2 for small outdoor and everyday carry, Viltrox for low light or extra bokeh. For photography AF the Viltrox it's very fast and sufficient and I like the Fuji as well. The big difference is if you going for smooth video AF.

Your finding of the center sharpness of Viltrox at wide open is better than fujinon 23, where was the fuji is better at the corners is very consistence with the other 2 youtube reviewers that I've watched. (one from china and the other from hongkong)
The question that can't be answered so easily,..ten years from now, which one will still be in good working order, and which one slowly feel to pieces? It has to be wondered when one lens is 60% less expensive than the other. I know shooters who have owned their fuji 23 F1.4 since release, had it in the rain, dropped it and its still going strong...maybe viltrox can perform the same, maybe not. Time will tell.
I’ve dropped the viltrox 23mm at a wedding Landed on its metal hood And so far it’s been a year since that happened and it hasn’t failed me once I own all 4 viltrox lenses and shoot professionally with them. But the ones I will replace will be the 33mm and 23 for the new Fuji versions I can’t stand the minimum focus distance on the viltrox Only issue with them. But the viltrox 56 and 85 are amazing
I don't know why you kept saying the fuji is sharper in the center, clearly the Viltrox was better at all apertures(watching at max quality I will download the images if I can). The fuji is twice the price, I don't think it's worth it when you compare images with the toy.
Excellent review, though I wish you'd had more time to actually work with the glass to determine its more intimate eccentricities. I ordered the 33mm f/1.4 since I don't have a prime "nifty fifty". Ken Wheeler offered an interesting review on various chromatic aberrations inherent in the way the viltrox glass is manufactured (as I understand it, a very similar process to the Zeiss glass). That said, it seems like the Viltrox glass is a solid hybrid lens for both photography and video - particularly in as much that any chromatic aberrations can be corrected with a little extra post-production work - everything is a trade off. Very happy the third-party glass is available. Eventually, once I get my light setup where I want it, I'm certain I'll pick up the 23mm as well.
Appreciate the feedback. Ultimately, I don’t have much time to invest in this review. I also didn’t have opportunities to use it in the real world considering the state of the pandemic
@@Reggiebphoto probably center sharpness wide open and also the focusing motors for video! If you consider price I feel the value is incredible on the viltrox

minimum focus is really big deal. I definitely will choose Fujinon 23mm f1.4. Native lens always match better with body because it made by same company where made camera body. If i really don't have enough money for this hobby(photography), then i guess i will consider to get Viltrox but you know.. native lenses are always have reason to choose ;)
The worst thing and the only biggest deal breaker about Viltrox 23mm is the uncontrolled chromatic aberration. It’s all over the picture like unicorn’s rainbow puke.

@@Reggiebphoto really? Cause when I tried classic chrome on the fujinon 55-200mm and Viltrox 56mm, only the fujinon showed the sim.
Yeah that’s not because of the lens.
🤦🏻♂️
The question that can't be answered so easily,..ten years from now, which one will still be in good working order, and which one slowly feel to pieces? It has to be wondered when one lens is 60% less expensive than the other. I know shooters who have owned their fuji 23 F1.4 since release, had it in the rain, dropped it and its still going strong...maybe viltrox can perform the same, maybe not. Time will tell.
I’ve dropped the viltrox 23mm at a wedding
Landed on its metal hood
And so far it’s been a year since that happened and it hasn’t failed me once
I own all 4 viltrox lenses and shoot professionally with them.
But the ones I will replace will be the 33mm and 23 for the new Fuji versions
I can’t stand the minimum focus distance on the viltrox
Only issue with them.
But the viltrox 56 and 85 are amazing
When I Saw you, my brain just remembered you as one Indonesian Comedian..
Interesting haha
@@Reggiebphoto His name is Arif Alfiansyah i think you need to Google it tho
@@felixabrahamsoediono3271 masak sih bang? 😂
I don't know why you kept saying the fuji is sharper in the center, clearly the Viltrox was better at all apertures(watching at max quality I will download the images if I can). The fuji is twice the price, I don't think it's worth it when you compare images with the toy.
I didn’t say it was sharper in the center. I said it was only sharp in the center.
@@Reggiebphoto I will watch it again, I was in the tube so not the best lol
No need to watch it again. I’m just saying I didn’t claim that.‘I’m very transparent that the Viltrox performs better
Great info. Thanks
but keep it in mind that the fuji is little bit more than the double of the price from the viltrox
Yup. That’s why I highlighted the prices on the thumbnail od this video
What’s the distance between you and the Viltrox 23 mm shooting this talking head video?
Maybe 4 feet? Im not sure
@@Reggiebphoto okay thank you!
Nice review!
Quick question: are you Filipino?
Yes I am
@@Reggiebphoto cheers!
Great stuff man, thank you!
Viltrox its doing a great job !!
Hoping viltrox to release a mark ii
Fuji is doing a better job with contrast.
definitely.
Very interesting, thanks!
very interesting indeed. anything suprising to you?
Great review! If I didn’t already have the Fuji, I would probably go for the viltrox
nice! what do you think is the winning characteristic for you?
@@Reggiebphoto probably center sharpness wide open and also the focusing motors for video! If you consider price I feel the value is incredible on the viltrox
I hope you redo this video with the mark I version now
SUPER GUT VIEEN DANK BITTE MACH SO WEITER DAS IST SEHR GUT DU SPICHST PERFEKT
🙌🏽🙌🏽
I chose the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 and I’m happy with my purchase
Awesome!
Great job, thank you!
Thanks for this video.
mibox kabas thanks for watching!
When 300 bucks... Are low budget! My pocket is bleeding out! XD
Unfortunately good optics costs money and engineering time. Budget oriented gear never comes without tradeoff a.
@@Reggiebphoto yess, I know!
it is all a matter of perspective.
are you comparing 300 bucks vs the price of other f1.4 lenses on market
or are you comparing 300 bucks vs "my pocket"
Nice comparison, very helpful Reggie! 😬
Awesome glad to hear!
Pinoy ka sir? Great review! My name is Roggie btw😁
minimum focus is really big deal. I definitely will choose Fujinon 23mm f1.4. Native lens always match better with body because it made by same company where made camera body. If i really don't have enough money for this hobby(photography), then i guess i will consider to get Viltrox but you know.. native lenses are always have reason to choose ;)
Yup agreed
I have the Viltrox 23mm and it is an excellent lens IMO.
Nice!
Thanks a lot!
You’re welcome
@@Reggiebphoto gonna buy Viltrox I guess :)
Use the discount code!
Close focus kills it for Viltrox
Same as their 33mm
Yep
Talking bokeh , you said the Fuji will produce more bokeh cause you can focus closely?
Yeah getting closer to a subject will have a more pronounced shallow depth of field effect
So fuji still have vignetting
Viltrox 85mm vs Fujinon 90mm pls
I don’t own the 85mm 1.8
@@Reggiebphoto Maybe they'll let you borrow he he
I Only borrow lenses I’m interested in haha. The 85 1.8 doesn’t interest me
Thank you great video was up in the air for minute now not anymore lol
which decision did you make?
Reggie Ballesteros I’m going to go with the second best lol viltrox for the win
@@RoadBlockNYC i'm sure it'll do well for your needs!
Reggie Ballesteros I’ll keep you posted for sure stay safe out there and keep these videos coming.
u look like a celebrity here in the PH. Ogie Alcasid 😅
Lots of people have told me
@@Reggiebphoto You look like Tom Delonge 😅
The worst thing and the only biggest deal breaker about Viltrox 23mm is the uncontrolled chromatic aberration. It’s all over the picture like unicorn’s rainbow puke.
Yes man! Lemon bokeh!
lol I didn’t know what to call it
very heplful review
Glad it was helpful!
It is called versus and not vers! 0:11 Vs. means versus!
Cool. Thanks for the correction. Glad I’m not an English grammar RUclips channel.
good job
Gang thanks!
The fuji is/has been overpriced. It should be $599 and the 23mm f2 should be at $399.
Ok
Noone Cares about this minor differences. Viltrox FTW!
Oberstudienrat-1980 just making available to the public so they don’t have to buy both to find out. Are you against helping people out in this manner?
@@Reggiebphoto
I meant that such almost invisible marginal differences are irrelevant to photographers. The Fuji 23mm cannot live up to its high price compared to the viltrox. Conclusion: Viltrox FTW
Again, I’m not making conclusions. I’m just offering observations and high res photos for download. How are you certain photographers don’t care about close focus distance?
@@Reggiebphoto
My conclusion has nothing to do with your comparison. I only refer to the possible purchase decision. without your video i wouldn't know that viltrox is so good.
Wel commenting as “no one cares” on my video makes it seem like you don’t care about what j share in the video .
of everything nice you can photograph to compare sharpness, you chose a dull wall
ZXun Lee I have a full review for the 23mm 1.4. The main differences between two lenses will be subtle differences. I also made this video during lockdown of the pandemic.
x1.25 recommended
The autofocus speed of the viltrox is what decides it all for me.
ur eyes tho
