Thanks for the review. I had my doubts about this yarn. Also, I like the idea of using my scrap yarn to make grannies; it’s very satisfying
HI Jojo!! Yesss exactly!! And (if you didn't know already) the whole idea behind granny squares was that it was to USE up SCRAP YARN!!! 😁 Thanks for your comment! XX Kim
I personally love it! A little fiddly, but I love it! I’m on my second skein of Frigid. It’s fine to listen to others’ reviews, but I’d try it. I’m SO glad I did.
Totally agree!
You have to do an exactly 4” tail at the beginning and then pick the hook that gives you the correct gauge. It does work.
Seems like you would also need to leave an exact length tail at the end as well, correct?
I love the color combinations, but like everyone, I really don't want to deal with the stress. Crocheting is suppose to be relaxing, not stressful. Thank you for helping me make up my mind. I'll just stick with what I have.
You are most welcome!! Relaxing for some...not for me!😅❤ XX Kim
I made cardigan with it.. It's beautiful..!!.. And a bucket hat..
Oh wow!!! Thats so great to read! I'd bet the colors are beautiful for that! XX Kim
I would make a hat or blanket and just let the colors do whatever they want.... I bet it would be like a kaleidoscope colors.
You know that's a great idea!!! Thats probably what I'll do with the one skein I kept!
I'm not having any problems at all. I really am enjoying it
Hi Pam! 👋 wow! Excellent! I'm glad it's working for you!! XX Kim
Well you gave it the old college try. I've watched a bunch of these reviews everyone has struggled. I agree with you its too much like hard work.
Hahaha thank you!! I really did try to make it work, but hey....I'll try anything! Thank-you fornyour comment! XX Kim
Thank you for trying the new granny square yarn! I remember seeing an ad and thinking, “Whoa! Game changer” but then I’m also from the “Show Me State” so I decided to hold off on buying any. Plus, I already have way more yarn than I need so I’ll stick to using up what I have first.
Haha Kalen!! I love your comment! Glad I could be of service then, LOL!! XX Kim
Thank you for the review! I agree with your review and I've tried this yarn which is a lovely idea but I found stressful.
My squares barely work with the size I 5.5mm but they only work after several tries. It's very stressful to have to rip out a round that's maybe too loose then later too tight requiring another rip back.
Glad it was helpful!
Oddly enough, this makes me want to try it and I didn’t want to before 😂
haha!! Try it, see if you like it! ;) XX Kim
I had a hard time at first, but I ended up getting it to work with a 6mm. That said I'm going to try again with a 5mm. I also used a magic ring and 1 chain between clusters, except for the corner.
I would shorten the tail at the beginning. But it looks like by the time we get it figured out we're so frustrated and the yarn is tattered that the scissors come out. A favorite saying of mine is "Just because it's a good idea on paper, does not mean it's a good idea."
Hi Nancy! 1000% agree! Thanks for subscribing! :) XX Kim
Thanks for doing this review. I am glad I passed on this yarn.😊
Haha...you are most welcome!! Happy to help!
I saw Mikey’s review and he has to go down a couple sizes too and I don’t like to go below an I 5.5. I don’t think it’s hard to work the end pieces into the next round of my granny’s so I only have to tie off the beginning and end which you’d have to do anyway with this yarn. Passing !!
I saw this at my Walmart…I was wondering how it was supposed to work. 😆 Thanks for sharing!
Oh good to know! I don't have a Walmart close to me. Others have made projects OTHER than the Granny Squares and they like it. 😁 XX Kim
Just watch Mikey’s demo. He doesn’t get all dramatic and stressed and it works just fine.
Thank you! ;)
I just came across your channel, this is my first video. First of all, I just wanna say how much I love the fact that your desk looks like mine! Lots of jars and little storage things. 🥰 Second, I appreciate your honest review! I bought some today and took to the youtubes when i got home, before starting anything with what I bought. after watching a few yarny folk struggle, I've decided to just use it as regular ol' yarn, in a wacky striped blanket.
Yay and welcome to my channel!! And thank you for the compliment, I just love my creative space...it fills me up everyday!!! I'm actually making something fun with the yarn ( I didn't return it afterall). I'll be showing off my WIP in next week's podcast...stay tuned!! Thank you for subscribing! XX Kim
Crochet crowd has a video on this. It might help to watch and see exactly how they do it. Just a suggestion.
Thanks for the suggestion!! 😊
Im glad you made this video. I ordered a couple skeins, to try.
All of my Joann stores, that are local, have closed down.
I will try the MC, and not CH 1 in between.. thanks for your video.
My pleasure, I hope you find joy in the yarn! (And glad that you have the online shopping option as well ). XX Kim
I took the plunge and bought 6 of three colors. I hate the chain one in between clusters so I used a 6mm and skipped the chain 1. Did the chain 2 in the corners and yes, it’s a bit fiddly but I have had success with my squares. Sometimes I need to adjust but overall I’m into it. I think I paid 7.12$ a piece at Joann Fabrics because they were on a pretty good sale like two days ago if price is a deterrent for anyone.
Hi Kelsey, Yay for you!! I'm glad you got it to work for you! I also found it on offer at Joann's, I think I paid about the same as you did. Thank you for your comment, and finding my channel! XX Kim
If the yarn was gorgeous, soft, drapey, and generally wonderful, I might think it worth the struggle to get the gauge right. But for a gimmick of nasty acrylic Red Heart? Not worth the brain damage, imo. Thanks for taking one for the team and struggling with it for us!
Thank you for your comment 😍😍😍 right after my own heart!!! 😆😆 XX Kim
It’s definitely worth a try. I crochet a little looser, maybe doing ch 1 inbetween the clusters might not work out. So I will have to play with it.
Great ideas Sylvia! XX Kim
One reviewer I saw had to go down 3 needles sizes and tighten her tension. I was excited about trying it but glad I didn't.
Hi Karen, thanks for your comment. I think if you're willing to "fiddle with it," then it may work. XX Kim
Red heart may not be the softest, but it does soften up quite a bit. Ive made many blankets with redheart. I can't wait to see how it works up.
Wonderful!! I hope it works up great for you! The colors are very pretty! XX Kim
i am searching all the videos i can find for this! I see you are having the same issue as me!! I'm about to count my loss!!
😅yes my friend....count your loss and move on! 😂XX Kim
Thanks for your honest review. I will pass on this yarn...not worth the headaches.
I too have tried this yarn and I’m ok with it because this was my first granny square. I’m not new too crochet at all. I usually do amigurumi and decided to start something new. I agree with all the reviews but I’d say try it for yourself. I followed the pattern exactly, even measuring the 4” tail out so I’d be accurate. It did take me a few times of redoing to get it right. As well as changing the hook size. I ended up with a G hook. I believe that’s a 4/4.5. Thank you for your honest review.
Hi Robin, sounds like we had similar experiences. :) I'll stay with my other favs. XX Kim
Every one I've seen has had problems with this yarn. Neat concept though...
Definitely neat concept!! I wanted this to work, but (for me) it didn't. Thanks for your comment! XX Kim
I definitely would not even try to use it for granny squares, but then I don't know anyone who makes them like I do... I don't like large "wholes" so unless it's a corner I don't chain. And I don't slip stitch to the next "whole" I actually turn between my rows.
But I wouldn't mind seeing the purple one done in a different pattern maybe a c2c? Just to see if it would work out like a variegated yarn will... but I refuse to use Red Heart brand I find them to scratchy have actually gotten "rope burns" across my knuckles a few times.
Hi Heidi, thanks for your comment! I love the versatility of granny squares, there's a lot of room for individuality, but that definitely wouldn't work with this yarn, lol. I did crochet up one skein and it felt a little softer, but (like you) I think it feels scratchy, compared to Lion Brand or Carons. Thanks for your feedback, and subscribing! XX Kim
When I first saw this yarn, I was thinking of making beautiful hats, scarves and afghans, not granny squares. I’ve seen videos in which the granny squares turned out quite nicely. I just think he colorways would look much better in other afghan projects. I’m gonna try some, anyhow. Happy New Year all!
Excellent!!! Happy New Year to you as well!! XX Kim
I haven’t gotten any yet. 😅
It sounded wonderful. I crochet very loosely so I haven't bought any. The only reason I make granny squares is to use up scraps. I'm not opposed to acrylic yarn. I actually prefer it because it's machine washable and dryable. I walk my dog through the woods at least 4 times a day, for a half hour at a time, so we get dirty. I do own some wool pieces, but I don't get to wear them very often.
I see where the color changes are not working. But i dont always need to color control my colors. But im not thrilled with the colors of the skeins.
They say you should cut the first color off and start to look like the picture and use a smaller hook it’s so confusing
Hmmmm...that doesn't sound logical. I've decided I may keep it, and make something entirely different...stay tuned😁
I have to admit that I'd love to know the mathematical formula to get the color changes right (same with self-stripes). Still, I'd rather choose my own colors; that's half the fun! Besides, everyone is using it like the gold and brown chevron throws during the 70's
Ugg. When I saw this I thought it might be fun for a granny stitch, planned pooling blanket instead.
Hi Angel! Yeah it didn't work for me, but a pooling pattern could possibly work. XX Kim
Just use a Russian join no end weaving and so much easier
You could take it down to a 4.5 hook and instead of doing 6 chains at the beginning of each row, only do three and have them count as the first double crochet, not the last.
Unfortunately, it’s basically rewriting the pattern for a yarn that may not be worth it.
Thanks for taking the time to show us. I’d rather use a better yarn and weave in the ends. I like natural fibers better for blankets.
No I don t think it works for me either . You are very patient . At least you try your best .and it answer my question . I keep doing smal thinks 😅
I'm happy to help. ❤ XX Kim
I figured it was a gimmik. But the yarn colors look pretty
Hi Lisa, I thought it was "too good to be true." If it actually works (for everyone) and is as easy as it appears, then why hasn't someone done this before. A few people like it, but it's not for me. :) XX Kim
I don't get why they say to start with a chain of six. Maybe that is what is wrong with the pattern.
I'm returning mine too except the one I tried too
Good for you!! Let's make something pretty with the skein we're keeping!😅❤ XX Kim
I think she is wrong. It worked for me with no problem. Maybe she doesn't know how to crochet or to follow instructions.
@annalair6657 😅 thanks for your input Anna. 👍🏻
@@annalair6657 I've only seen 1 person in all my fb groups that came out perfect & they used their own granny pattern
Maybe change the pattern in the grandma square like only two instead of three chain .
Chain Six is too many stitches. Chain Six is too long .
I bought 4 skeins of this yarn and I’m getting the same results. Mine ended w black, so I got Red Heart black yarn to attach at the end because even at the end there wasn’t enough yarn. It’s disappointing.
Hi Belinda! Thanks for your comment. It was disappointing for me as well, but some people are having joy 😊 . I'll just stick with old fashioned granny square making. Good for you for finding a solution! XX Kim
It doesn't work for me. I tried over and over. I was finally down to a F hook and still did not have enough yarn to the next color. I usually have quite a bit of patience with taking my work out and re doing, but this is just stressful. Also, I don't like the fact that you have to use only their pattern. I would rather weave in the ends, too.
Or use a smaller or larger crochet hook
Hi! I did go down to a smaller hook, and tightened my gauge and it didn't work (for me). 🙂
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains and it worked, but if it wasn't making you happy, go down one more or tighten your tension. It's some patience that's all
Where did you get the written instructions? Only thing on the back of my yarn was a diagram which was tiny! Can you help?
Hi!! The instructions are written on the INSIDE of the yarn label. 😁 XX Kim
The other videos I've watched didn't chain 1 in between the corners. They only chained in the corners.
You done to many double crochets in the first corner. The chain 6 counts as 1 double 3 chains and 1 double so you just add 2 more doubles in the first space not 3❤❤❤
Thanks for the tips!
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains I just placed an order with joanns I am.only paying 5.00 a skein they have it on sale for 7. Something a skein.
Hi Kimberly isn’t it just variegated yarn and they put in the instructions how to use it and it’s your fault it’s not working because your tension is wrong. I would rather take the time to splice the yarn on colour change. Is it a con ????? I won’t be buying any not only because it’s an American yarn and I live in Wales, also crocheting is suppose to be relaxing but my cat would like it. Loves and Hugs xxx Wendy
Hi Wendy! its billed as a granny square yarn that you don't have to weave in the ends, and im with you, I'm happy weaving in my own ends. Some people really like it, its just not for me. Im with you...#1 crochet is supposed to be "Zen" and the UK and EUROPE has better yarn! LOL! Thanks for your wonderful comment, and for subscribing! 😁 XX Kim
I found out for me not all hooks are the same.
Your not the only one having problems 😢with yarn.
If you search around on RUclips you will fill 1 or 2 people who have overcome this yarn stitch. 😅
Try a 4,0 or 4.5
Hi Darcia, 👋 good idea. I'll keep playing with the skein I kept. 😁 XX Kim
Hi I have watched a few reviews about this and they have all said the same. The colours are nice it’s a shame about the squares.😮😮
Hi Brett, yes me too!! Pretty much all the reviews I've seen talk about getting the colors to jive. Shame really cause it was a great concept.
Thanks, I’ll pass on this yarn.
Go down one size on the hook
Agree!
Its new and expensive $7
To me it’s too much work. I love the idea but not working for me. I have spent way too much time trying to get it right.
I'm with ya Rebecca! XX Kim
I learnt how to do a plaid blanket with red heart stripes.
I remember we had a recipe, but sometimes we just had to add an extra stitch or loosen our gauge.
Once you get the hang of it , its smooth sailing.
I think the same thinking will apply here
That's a great idea!
I had already decided not to buy this yarn as I like doing different types of Granny Squares. So, unless I wanted to only use that type of square, it is a no go for me.
Hi Sonja, I agree, and that is pretty much the sentiment of most. :) Thank you for subscribing! XX Kimberly
I’m not getting why this is new. Color changing yarn has already existed. What makes this different?
Edit--I get it. The change is supposed to be at specific points.
Seems stressful..shame you can't use the yarn for other projects
Hi Aileen, for me it was. Others are using the yarn for other projects, I'm sticking with my Schitts Creek! Thanks for your comment, and for subscribing! XX Kimberly
That Granny square yarn does not work right and it costs way too much for red heart. I love red heart, but that's too expensive when it doesn't work. Thank you for sharing.
What? On your second try, the colour change came at just the right spot. I don’t understand your big sighs and wa wa wa and ripping it out.
Make the tail shorter!!
Hi Cheryl! I tried that, and I still missed the mark. Have you tried it? Did it work for you?
Yarnspirations keeps coming up with idiotic "new" yarn (Caron Pantone, O'Go, Pooling, now Granny Square) to try and get us to waste our money on.
How about if they keep the decent yarn they do have (Lily Sugar n Cream, Super Saver, etc), in stock for us to purchase, instead of saying "it's Michael's/JoAnn's fault (I was told this by customer service when I inquired about Caron Latte or something). Those stores decide what's sold; we have no control over it since we can't be bothered to sell our own yarn online like EVERY OTHER YARN MANUFACTURER does.
I no longer purchase ANY Yarnspirations products, especially since they bought Red Heart and screwed it up. Grrr!
I hear ya! Keep the stuff that works for us! :) Thanks for your comments! XX Kim
Juan the yarn addict, gave this yarn, a definite thumbs down.❤
Sorry, way too much work. I love making granny squares. They are so much fun. I’m pretty sure this yarn was created by somebody who thought they could reinvent the granny square wheel. I won’t be buying this yarn. Period. Not ever.
I’m buying it but not doing granny squares. I just love the colors.
Not for me!! Thank you for the review!!
Hi Helen! You are most welcome! Keep Calm and Crochet On! :) and thank you for subscribing! XX Kim
This has become a HUGE fail for Red Heart and Yarn Inspirations. Your experience has not been uncommon and a lot of people have been complaining that this does not work the way they are intending it to work. They are going to end up very expensively scrapping this whole idea or reworking it so that the way that it works is not so tight. Everyone crochets differently and so tensions are very different. I don't know how they thought that every person could do this Granny square with the same exact tension and expect everyone to get all the loops corroborated together. They took a big gamble on this....and losing. I bought only one, just in case, because I have been hearing such really bad reviews. I haven't even tried it because every day, I'm seeing someone complain how horrible it is and how it doesn't work. Some people actually had success with it it but the majority of people....not so much. It's really too bad because it's a pretty good concept and it would be wonderful if it actually worked!
You have voiced my sentiments exactly!! Many people suggested changing stitch count or hook size, and others are making something entirely different than the intended pattern. I wanted to see if the concept would work, so I followed the DIRECTIONS on the label to a "T" and...well you saw my results. It was a great concept, but like I said, if it was such a "game changer " I think another company, such as @LionBrand would have done this already. Thanks for your comment. XX Kim
Are you a yarn snob?
Hi Sandy! Thanks for your comments. Certainly NOT a yarn snob! You should see my stash, LOL!
Nope, not going to buy it!! I' just stick with Red Hearts other yarn!! Thanks!!
Good call!! In my humble opinion 😊
