@truckincrochet I love fall colors so you’re in the right place if you do too!!! Here’s more details on the hat! Work Though Your Yarn Stash With This System! ruclips.net/video/FfFkpH-6iHU/видео.html
I happened across your video this morning and wanted to say thank you for the information. Many factors, mainly age, have me in a position of buying almost everything online these days and I’ve made some disastrous mistakes with yarn so I really appreciate the information you’ve offered here.
I moved from New England where I had 3 wool shops nearby, to SW and due to covid closing the only wool shop nearby, i had to start ordering online, taking the joy out of seeing and touching fiber. I knit Aran designs and fair isle, so I'm not into acrylic as it just doesn't look and feel right for traditional designs. Must be the time consuming nature of those projects, but wool is it for me. There is a co-op nearby (1hr) that i get to visit once or twice a year so Wool & Company out of IL is my go to online wool shop! I love Berrocco as my value wool and Madelinetosh and Malabrigo for special projects. They are always in stock, free ball winding and shipping! I've also used Jimmy Beans in NV if i need a certain wool not in stock at Wool & Company. Edit: I have used Wool of the Andes from Knitpicks but its a bit scratchier than i care for.
It's a toss-up between Herrschner's and Mary Maxim. And a surprise source is Office Supply. I needed a particular colorway of a DK Premier yarn and no one had it in stock except Office Supply. And at a good price. Very clean, well packaged and timely delivery. I get other items from there as well so it's a bit too easy to order for my stash LOL!
Best place for cheap yarn? GARAGE SALES. Here's the trick: if there are ladies running the garage sale, ask if any of them crochet or knit. Then, if any of them say yes, then ask if they have any yarn or hooks or needles for sale. Been doing this for YEARS, and guess what? Last weekend, I got 6 balls of Bernat Home Dec Yarn in turquoise, brand new for $13 altogether. This was from an older lady running a garage sale - she did not have yarn out or anything crafty like that. I asked her the questions I stated above, and she said that there were 2 boxes full of yarn in the house but she couldn't carry it outside. My husband and I helped her bring the boxes outside and instead of charging me the price she was going to sell them for($5 each) she gave me all 6 skeins for just $13. Take my advice now and thank me later. 🤣 Side note: this doesn't happen at every garage sale, but I'll say that maybe out of 30 garage sales in a year, I probably get crochet supplies and yarn from about 7 to 15 of them. (Knitters will be happy, because I see more knitting supplies at sales than crochet supplies.)
I really like the color of yarn used for your hat. I dicovered Herrshnerrs years ago and the are a great source for yarn. Mary Maxim and Premier Yarns are also great online yarn retailers for affordable yarns - and Premier's weekly yarn deals can be awesome. Unfortunately, they don't have shipping deals that often. For more premium yarns, Webs and Fab yarns have both worked well for me.
Thanks! The hat is herrschners afghan yarn in deep teal held with a discontinued verigated yarn. I’ve got more details here: Work Though Your Yarn Stash With This System! ruclips.net/video/FfFkpH-6iHU/видео.html I been so tempted by Premier but the shipping has always stopped me unfortunately. I’ve also checked out webs but I’ve never heard of fab yarns….. I’ll have to go look them up!
@@ShannonTalksYarn When I order from Premier yarn I usually am buying afghan quantities of the Anti-Pilling yarn, so I hit the $75 threshold for free shipping. After I put in the planned order, if I am close to the $75 I will add a new yarn or 2 that I haven't experienced to put the order past the threshold. And they do have reduced shipping a few times a year. Also, they choose one or two yarns a month with 25-50% off value bags of 2 or 3 skeins. I recently got the Everyday Anti-Pilling Batik for $10 per 3 pack and the savings more than covered the cost of the shipping, to the point that I still saved 20% off normal price.
Tip, We Crochet and Knit Picks are the same company. Sometimes We Crochet has a lower threshold for free shipping than Knit Picks. I do love the Dots crochet hooks from We Crochet. Yesterday, Knit Picks had a 1 day only free shipping code.
@egoreknits thanks! That is super helpful, I appreciate it! Can you order from them together, like herrschners/willow yarn or is it separate? I’ll also go check out the hook!
Love these suggestions, Shannon. You have converted my yarn shopping habits completely. I’m now so much happier with my stash and purchase intentionally. Thank you! 🩵🧶🩵
Oh my gosh, thank you! Im happy to be a good (not bad!) influence on your shopping lol! But seriously, I’m thrilled you are enjoying your stash more ❤️
Right!?!?!? I new I wasn’t crazy lol 😂 But I definitely should have investigated more 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😀 Thank you! I’ll be working on a beanie tutorial soon!
I love knitpicks, lovely yarn, love trying the different wools. Love craft is another favorite, they have discounts all the time and you can still add a code, love buying malabrigo. Little knits is another that exposes me to lots of great yarn at good prices. These are my go to stores.
From what I’ve learned from both you and coco’s crochet is that Australian yarn prices are crazy high!!!!! I do love that you have such great access to mill ends tho!
WOOL WAREHOUSE is tops in my book. I have been able to order hard to find pieces to augment my Tulip Travel C interchangeable knitting needle set at reasonable prices. That was my start point and then I began ordering yarn because it was well priced yarn with VERY reasonable and quick shipping to me in Boston. I recently ordered from Knit Picks only because of their sale and may have been free ship too. I had very bad experiences with online Joanne’s. It took 2X’s in my earlier knitting days before I swore off even shopping in their stores. During covid I discovered a great LYS that ships/delivers including great clearance discounts so that is my first shop solution to keep business local. Great video
Best time to visit store is during deer hunting season. They open up the warehouse. I used to live in Wisconsin and shopped there often. now I order on line.
Thanks Shannon. I appreciate your vetting. I like lion brand and wasn’t aware if going straight to their site. I’m a fan of knitpicks so was happy to hear they’re part of your list. I will investigate wool warehouse..excited about that. Sending a wooly hug! 🧶❤️☮️
I learned about Herrschners back in the '70 when I moved from Puerto Rico, where i grew up, to Massachusetts. Bought from them, loved them. Then I moved to New York where I could get every yarn and thread in person. Now back in Puerto Rico, in my 70's, remembered Herrschners, found them online, and the magic continues. I mostly buy cotton threads and yarns. I find acrylic to hot for Puerto Rico. (I've heard nice things about Joann's. Let see if they ship to Puerto Rico. Michael's doesn't.) 😂😊
I ordered from Herrshnerrs and it was a good experience but now I get 3-4 emails a day! Had to unsubscribe several times. 😮 Gotta tell us what yarn your hat is made with. Love it!
Oh my gosh, yes that is definitely a problem there lol!!! My hat is Herrschner’s afghan yarn in deep teal held together with a verigated yarn. It’s here in this video! Work Though Your Yarn Stash With This System! ruclips.net/video/FfFkpH-6iHU/видео.html
PS: thanks for sharing with us the color combinations for your fab hat! I def have deep teal yarn, I could double it up and combine it with an earth tone variegated, all of which I have in my wonderful stash. Yay!
I enjoyed hearing about your shopping charges. i totally agree with you about Lion Brand's website providing a color description of the yarn. i always use it as a reference point before i order their yarn. i definitely am interested in trying out Herschner's afghan yarn.
Thanks for your suggestions-I have successfully shopped at all the online companies you mentioned. I was fascinated with that Halloween Chroma yarn! Aside from the great video-what yarn did you use for your hat? I love it! Again, thank you for the useful information.
Hi Vicki! Thank you ❤️ The hat is actually Herrschner’s Afghan yarn in deep teal held together with a discontinued verigated. It’s about halfway through this video! Work Though Your Yarn Stash With This System! ruclips.net/video/FfFkpH-6iHU/видео.html
Another wonderful video, TY Shannon! Your gentle, sensible & kind presence is so comforting to me 🥰 I enjoyed hearing your take on all these companies. The only one I haven’t tried from your top 4 list is KnitPicks. I think your videos have helped me be more discerning and avoid the huge temptation to shop for yarn when I see haul videos etc. I have developed quite a stash (which isn’t outrageous in and of itself, but it is too big for my small space… ) So I am determined to work through it + I am also going to be gifting some of it. I’m sure from time to time, I may need something specific. (I will definitely be trying Wool warehouse, I would like to make my Sophie‘s universe using, one of those UK DK yarns!) Thanks again dear ✌️
I love Lion Brand’s website for the same reasons that you mentioned. I love Joann’s as well. Because of the shipping from different stores, I’ve had dye lots not matching, which is frustrating! I have not ordered from the other online retailers you mentioned, so will check them out.
Knitpicks and we crochet are the same company. But we crochet has a free shipping threshold of $45. And 2x a year they have a major sales.i also like Hobbii from Denmark, good quality yarn, lots of sales and you can add a coupon on top. But I have to say I love little knits small us based business where you can buy luxury yarn for sale price. If I want to be indulgent I would buy from expression fiber arts. Good sales bin where you can also add coupons. ❤️
Those are great options!! I have looked at several of those, several times lol! I’ll have to relook and check out again. Especially if I can use coupons!! Thanks for the tips 😃
Great video with lots of useful info. I agree about Herrschners. I can't believe how many colors they have. Your hat and top look perfect on you. Great colors for your skin tone. I would guess your top is cranberry. I don't know how they got pink for cranberry. I have also ordered from ICE yarns. I bought some really pretty variegated that was on clearance. Even with the higher shipping it came out to be a very low price per yard. It only took 4 days to get to my front door all the way from Turkey. JoAnn usually takes 2 weeks no matter what I order. The catch is you have to order a certain quantity that is prepackaged. Lets say it comes 4 skeins in a pack, but I need 5. I would have to buy 2 packs totaling 8 skeins. So it could be more costly if you don't have a project that takes the same amount of yardage that a pack contains.
I have been so tempted on multiple occasions to order from ICE! I definitely don’t mind buying a larger quantity. For me it’s just hard to wrap my mind around the shipping! But I know it costs a fortune to ship worldwide so I get tho. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😀
My name is Brenda, and I really appreciated your explanation of different places to buy yarn online. I’m wondering if you’ve ever ordered from TEMU or WISH?
Hi Brenda! Thanks for watching and commenting! I haven’t order any yarn from there but my friend Meg at the channel Show and Tell Meg put out a video a month or so ago all about how to get good quality yarn on temu, it was a super helpful video, I recommend checking it out!
I just watched you for the first time. As far as on-line stores, I would add Jimmy Beans Wool and Webs to your list. For me, after some indie dyers, my top 3 in no order are Knit Picks, Jimmy Beans Wool, and Webs. To me, they are interchangeable based on what I am looking for. All 3 have a wide variety of price points as well as selections a a variety of yarns from acrylics to cotton to linen to wool and any combo in between.
You literally cannot beat I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby. Every other week its only 3.49 for their bi-weekly 30% off yarn sale, and is THE best quality acrylic. And the fact that it's cheaper than red heart Super Saver and big twist, it's such an unbelievable quality, cannot be beat. Red Heart isn't real soft, and big twist gets very fuzzy and it splits, you can feel that it's cheap
Hi Nora! Yep, it’s such a great yarn! HL would be my favorite place to shop for yarn in person, but I’m just not a fan of their app or website (even tho they have made some improvements), that’s why they didn’t make this video….. But maybe I’ll do one for brick and mortar stores!
@@ShannonTalksYarn If a company's employment policies are of interest to you, Hobby Lobby may be off your radar for more than one reason. They have a couple policies that I don't care for, so I rarely shop there and never pay full price. Occasionally I'll pay their 30% off sales price, but I mostly confine myself to their clearance , in yarn and other items. Have a great day. 🐞
Wool Warehouse looks interesting - I like watching Retro Claude who is in England so she orders from there sometimes… neat to hear the shipping is good for North America also 👀
The beanie is two yarns held together. Deep Teal in Herrschners Afghan Yarn and I paired it with a discontinued verigated yarn in “fall colors”. That particular one was I love this wool from hobby lobby. Hope that helps!
The only place online I buy yarn from is Knit Picks. I love their yarns. Gloss lace weight is very reasonable in price for my budget. I live where the only place that sells yarn is Walmart and JoAnn's Fabrics.
Tells us not to feel influenced to buy more yarn.... adds yarn to cart. Lol I have been searching for a good Halloween themed yarn and All Hallows is totally it! Thank you!!! Also did you know that wecrochet is the same as knitpicks except more crochet friendly?
Love crafts? I’ve checked out their website but I haven’t ever ordered from them. I have gotten lots of patterns there tho! Is there a yarn you recommend there?
Just wondering what your favorite cotton yarn is when working with things like wash cloths, etc. I use Lily Sugar'n Cream, but it pills so bad after washing and drying.
I have to be honest, I just don’t make a ton of dishcloths but my friend Jessie over at Sweet Moments By Jessie has several dishcloth/washcloth videos on her channel, which I totally recommend! I believe her preferred cotton is I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby. Hopefully that helps!
Knit Picks all the way! I never buy from them except during their big sales (one of which was just last week). They have a day where they mark certain types of yarn down to $2 or $4 each and I majorly stock up when they do that. Their yarns are beautiful quality and when you can get it for such a great price, its a no brainer for me. I generally don't buy yarn elsewhere and just save my money for the knit picks sales lol.
@@ShannonTalksYarn I actually thought of that as soon as I started watching your video lol. Mine would be pretty boring though - mostly Knit Picks lol. I could show my favorite yarns from them though.
Thanks! It’s 2 yarns held together. It’s herrschners afghan yarn in deep teal with a random discontinued verigated yarn. It was kind of muted fall colors. I thought it really improved the look of the verigated!
Quick FYI about Lion Brand: if you don't like excessive email spam, do *not* give Lion Brand permission to send you 'deals'. I've gotten 9 non-order related emails in 7 days...
I just came across your channel and really enjoy your recommendations and/or lists. Through many trial and errors over the years I have picked up far too many skeins/hanks of yarn. I have way too much yarn but still have that craving for just one more skein. I thank you for this list and agree with the value you’ve put on the list. I’ll just let my son spoil me those $30 hanks he brings me now and again, lol. By the way, do you know anything about these online clearances for JOANN’s that keep popping up. There is so many of them I’m actually afraid it’s some sort of hoax. Being a granny on a fixed income I need to be careful. I look forward to seeing more of your channel. Take care and may god bless you.
Thank you for your support! And can I say, how awesome your son knows exactly how to spoil you!!! Yes, I believe you are right and the ads for Joann are a scam. I know my Joann usually does a big in store clearance this time of year but I have seen those ads and they seem a little to good to be true. As far as I know, even tho some stores have closed, they haven’t liquidated any merchandise to third parties. Thanks again for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
Thank you! Here is a video where I talk about the hat in a little more detail: Work Though Your Yarn Stash With This System! ruclips.net/video/FfFkpH-6iHU/видео.html But I will probably end up filming instructions soon since I’ve had such a good response to it!
In what world is "cranberry" pink? Who named that one? lol. My #1 is Wool Warehouse, 99% of the yarn I buy is from them. Occasionally, I order from JoAnn or Premier. I happened upon the Herrshcnerrs warehouse sale once on the way to a wedding, it was amazing. I don't order from them online. I had an order, over $200 (!) and it was lost in shipping, they refused to replace or refund my money. I was pretty pissed and swore never again.
right?!?! I think WW will totally get higher n my list the more i order from them. I love it so far! That's terrible and terrible customer service too!
Hello. Has anyone had their Joann app just get stuck on the review page. Cannot remove or save til later. No response from customer service. Any advice?
I stopped buying from Lion Brand, over the last 10 years their prices on yarn has increased and their “sales” are few and far between. Also, the shipping is outrageous!
I am new to Shannon's channel. Does anyone know if Shannon has a sister named Emily? Shannon and Emily Noel (another You Tube channel) sound so much alike
I don’t have any sisters! But I am subscribed to her too!!! I believe she is from Illinois and I’m in Iowa so we probably both have the same widwestern thing going on! 😃
How long ago was it that we were worried about JoAnn going out of business? Well, maybe you weren't worried... Anyhow, does it seem to you that they've closed warehouses and heavily stocked stores, so that's why orders are coming from everywhere?
I think the shipping is running about the same as always where they ship out from stores. I do feel bad for people who had their Joann store close but it looks like those stores were in areas where there were multiple Joann’s. All I know is I’m thankful “my store” stayed open!!! But there’s only a couple in my state….
Just started the video and had to say, that hat/ yarn is gorgeous!!! My kinda colors! Ok, back to the video! Lol
I came here to say the same thing.

Premier yarn is my number one yarn for value, and my investment yarn is Universal Yarn.
Wool and co is one of my favorites. They have a ton of variety, a whole range of prices, and some hard-to-find European dyers
I’m going to have to check them out! You’re the second or third one to say that!!! 😃

Thank you so much! I appreciate that! Glad I could help :)
I love Lion Brand’s website for the same reasons that you mentioned. I love Joann’s as well. Because of the shipping from different stores, I’ve had dye lots not matching, which is frustrating! I have not ordered from the other online retailers you mentioned, so will check them out.
The dye lot can be a problem with Joann! I had a heck of a time finding dye lots that match sometimes even when I’m at the store! It’s crazy!
I like Herrschner's, I've gotten some great deals on yarn there. I'll definitely check out the Wool Warehouse, I hadn't heard of them before.
I really like the WW! I hope you check it out!
Hi Shannon 🤗 I’ll have to check out the Wool Warehouse! Thank you for sharing! 🥰🧶🤩
That would be so awesome if they ship to Australia!!!
I will see what's up with Wool Warehouse. The others carry a lot of acrylic, if you're into that.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks for watching!
Great video, informative. I need to check out the Wool warehouse. Thanks for making this video.
Thank you! Totally go check it out, I think you'll enjoy it!
I will check those both out, thank you for the tip! And thanks for watching and commenting too, I appreciate it!
I really like love crafts value packs in the simply Aaron or simply DK
I’ve had that suggested a few times now, I’ll definitely have to check them out! Thanks 😃
Wool Warehouse is great, and their shipping cost is awesome.
I have bought from there a couple times, but window shop often.
I’m always checking out what new there too! And what’s on sale too lol 😂
@@ShannonTalksYarn
If a company's employment policies are of interest to you, Hobby Lobby may be off your radar for more than one reason.
They have a couple policies that I don't care for, so I rarely shop there and never pay full price. Occasionally I'll pay their 30% off sales price, but I mostly confine myself to their clearance , in yarn and other items.
Have a great day. 🐞
Wool Warehouse looks interesting - I like watching Retro Claude who is in England so she orders from there sometimes… neat to hear the shipping is good for North America also 👀
Yes the shipping scared me away for a long time and then I found out it was super reasonable lol! I’ll have to check out that channel!
@@ShannonTalksYarn It’s great! Her stash busting series is excellent for some crafty motivation 🤓 ruclips.net/video/ubUQCQ4ERHc/видео.html
I love the colors of your cap! What wool is this?
The teal is Herrschner’s afghan yarn in deep teal paired with a discontinued I love this wool from hobby lobby. It was muted “fall colors”.
@@ShannonTalksYarn Thank you so much!
YW! :)
Love your program. Which is the yarn you used for the beany that you are eating please and where to get it, love the copper and blue combo
Thanke
The beanie is two yarns held together. Deep Teal in Herrschners Afghan Yarn and I paired it with a discontinued verigated yarn in “fall colors”. That particular one was I love this wool from hobby lobby. Hope that helps!
The only place online I buy yarn from is Knit Picks. I love their yarns. Gloss lace weight is very reasonable in price for my budget. I live where the only place that sells yarn is Walmart and JoAnn's Fabrics.
I was super tempted to pick up some of that gloss lace!!! Maybe my next order!
Love your colors.❤
Thank you!!! 😊
Thank you! I just bought 4 balls of the chroma!!
YW! I think you’ll love it!
Tells us not to feel influenced to buy more yarn.... adds yarn to cart. Lol I have been searching for a good Halloween themed yarn and All Hallows is totally it! Thank you!!! Also did you know that wecrochet is the same as knitpicks except more crochet friendly?
lol I know right!?!? I think you’ll love it tho!
Mary Maxim and LindeHobby are very good also.
I haven’t heard of lindehobbi I’ll have to check them out!
@@ShannonTalksYarn They're great - very good prices and excellent service. And very good yarn.
Have you ever used love rats in the UK? They are affiliated with Webs Yarn in MA. You may find them interesting.
Love crafts? I’ve checked out their website but I haven’t ever ordered from them. I have gotten lots of patterns there tho! Is there a yarn you recommend there?
The yarn is great. I am still stash busting and cannot get yarn now.
That’s ok! I love stash busting! I love finding older yarns I forgot about!!!
I love wool warehouse when I buy Drops yarn! It’s the best
It is the best!!! 💯
Thanks Shannon 😊
You are so welcome!
It really is amazing Meg! Would you ever consider doing a video on your top 5 (or whatever) favorite yarns from there?? I’d love to get your opinion!
@@ShannonTalksYarn I actually thought of that as soon as I started watching your video lol. Mine would be pretty boring though - mostly Knit Picks lol. I could show my favorite yarns from them though.
@showandtellmeg I would love to know your favorite knit picks yarns! Do it!!!!!!
What is the yarn that your hat is made of? Its very pretty.
Thanks! It’s 2 yarns held together. It’s herrschners afghan yarn in deep teal with a random discontinued verigated yarn. It was kind of muted fall colors. I thought it really improved the look of the verigated!
I don’t see links to yarn sites in “more” section.
Quick FYI about Lion Brand: if you don't like excessive email spam, do *not* give Lion Brand permission to send you 'deals'. I've gotten 9 non-order related emails in 7 days...
Great tip! All those emails can be a bit much!
Do you have the pattern for your hat, it is very pretty❤
Thank you! Here is a video where I talk about the hat in a little more detail: Work Though Your Yarn Stash With This System!
ruclips.net/video/FfFkpH-6iHU/видео.html
But I will probably end up filming instructions soon since I’ve had such a good response to it!
That Chroma is on sale right now.
I saw that too!!! 😃
Thank you for your video
You’re very welcome!!!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hello. Has anyone had their Joann app just get stuck on the review page. Cannot remove or save til later. No response from customer service. Any advice?
Oh no! Maybe go into the App Store and make sure you're phone has the latest version updated!
Never mind found three links.
Ok, awesome! 😃
Good deals my problem 🤦🏻♀️ now i got at least close to 400 pound of yarns 🤦🏻♀️😅
lol, that’s relatable!!! 😃
I stopped buying from Lion Brand, over the last 10 years their prices on yarn has increased and their “sales” are few and far between. Also, the shipping is outrageous!
❤
I am new to Shannon's channel. Does anyone know if Shannon has a sister named Emily? Shannon and Emily Noel (another You Tube channel) sound so much alike
I don’t have any sisters! But I am subscribed to her too!!! I believe she is from Illinois and I’m in Iowa so we probably both have the same widwestern thing going on! 😃
I shouldn’t be watching this. I have so much yarn already!
Great video, but imo you apologize too much. Just do you! Thanks for the video ❤
Thank you and thanks for the encouragement! 🫶🏻
