I’ve definitely seen a bunch of people really struggle with getting everything to line up, but I do love the idea of this yarn! I also think it would be amazing for a “scrap” sweater without any ends to weave in 😂

This is exactly what I was thinking!! It could look really neat if you doubled up the yarn for a scrap blanket as well.

The coating on Red Heart washes out. I love it because the texture makes working with the yarn easier, then washes out when I’m finished with the project and is nice and soft.

I've learned with red heart it softens up when you wash and dry it. I know I shouldn't throw it in the drawer but i do and it softens up so nicely! I have also soaked it in warm water with fabric softener for 30+ minutes and then rinsed well and let dry which also helps!

Although I haven’t had a problem yet I did notice that there was more yarn at the end that cannot fit in a granny square than there was on the other color I had :(

I absolutely ❤ this yarn. I ❤ the colors, plus a made my own work-around for each colorway I picked up. Therefore, all my squares come out. Like you, I am using an H/8 hook and making the squares, the way I prefer to make them. Yes, I have extra length on some colors and just enough length on other colors. I also hope Red Heart adds other color combos and keeps it around for a while. Thank you for sharing.

I have the same ridiculously massive Walmart bag (we don't get those here in the US, so I HAD to get it when I traveled to Canada last year) and the fact that you were able to fill it completely with yarn is honestly ✨goals✨

Im doing just the same or if it is unavoidable, Im doing stright after I finished each square. Then it is not so boring to do so. Also sewing squares in the lines, without sewing each one separately. It saves time and yarn also many ends avoiding to be sewn. I would not buying this particular yarn because it is expensive and creates stress as you crocheting : will be enough color,is it right hook, what tension I must do? I like enjoy my work and process itself. Expensive it is because from one skein you making 14-15 squares, but from 5 skeins you will do much more and at the end you will pay less for the same 14 squares.

I absolutely love this yarn ❤ and it took me an entire skein to make it work everytime. I only use a 5.5 and the recommended pattern (including the recommended 4 inch tail to start and cutting right at the color change at the end) and after about 10 squares I had it down 😁 I'm currently working on a duster that is going to take 8 skeins of Carnation Code

All these brands, including Red Heart, have complaint/feedback/concern options on their website. Because this is a product failure, the citrus twist being consistently short on the later row colors, compared to their other products in the exact same line (!), submit a complaint, or a concern through their website. They will probably send you a discount code or coupon, or replacement yarn, to use for other projects.

I've heard Redheart wants to hear from crocheters in regards to this type of issue. Hopefully they will retool the yarns to get them tuned in. I am making a blanket for my husband. I am a tight crocheter and always have to go down half/ whole sizes with all yarns but this type of RH. I think it's the starch they use in the yarn. It doesn't really stretch like most yarns. It's also why it's not super soft but it washes out wonderfully. That said I had to change my game with this yarn. I love the colors. Fun combos I'd never think to use. I may but this again when on sale in a few colors. It was on sale at Joann till end of Jan.

I was looking forward to this video ever since I saw your RUclips short! The color choices for the squares is beautiful. I also agree that paying 12.99 for one skein is better than paying 6-7 dollars for one skein. (And choosing your own colors) It seems that the color changing is inconsistent but I do see the ‘novelty’ aspect of the yarn, I consider buying this but my tension is inconsistent.

  • @tallyrephens5588

I did exactly what you did!! I kept multiple hooks around (started with three and ended up only needing two!) That way I could kind of hack the color phasing a bit depending if I had too little or too much at the end of each round LOL I have the opposite problem tension wise though XD i tend to crochet wayyy to tight because i started my crochet journey as a amigurumi maker haha
Also, I changed my pattern to:
    -Start in a magic ring
(Leaving a 6ish long tail after pulling magic ring snug, I noticed that no matter what the center color was just given too much yarn for my liking)
-3 double crochet (only for the first round as the rest starting each round will be stacked single crochets!)
-And chain 2 at the corners
(Also, there is no chain in between sections/double crochet clusters!!)
-to start the next color/section, I always started with a stacked single crochet followed by 2 double crochet ( the stacked double counts as the first double! )
-Then continue as normal 3 double crochet chain 2 in corner 3 double crochet
    (Again not chain between clusters!)
-And of course slip stitching to finish each round :)
(After blocking, they all looked identical tension wise!!
Its so nice to see a video of someone who had the same/similar experience that I did as well!! most people have just hated it T_T but it grew on me more than I thought it would! THANK YOU FOR SUCH A GREAT DETAILED VIDEO

Here in Belgium I saw a brand Katia that also does those granny squares colour changes yarn (its called instant granny) but the colours are less cool and its more expensive for the amount of granny squares u get! Would love it if I could get the red heart yarn in Belgium but thats sadly not possible💔

I have this yarn and I had to go to a 4mm hook. I can follow the pattern exactly and it works perfectly. I love it. I’m more of a knitter so my tension in crochet may be a little looser. But if I do tighten up my tension I always have too much of each color. Thanks for your advice

Just found your channel and been binging your videos while I work 😆 Love everything you are creating! Keep going 🎉🎉🎉 I was also curious about this yarn because of the "no ends" promise, but not sure if I'll like to play yarn chicken every row haha.
A tip I learned from someone who hates seeing the yarn poking after weaving ends: leave a 10-15cm tail and use a sharp point needle (I know them as ribbon embroidery needle). Weave the end yarn inside the project yarn, not around. Using the sharp point to split the treats of the project yarn and putting the end yarn inside. With time, wear and washings, the treats kinda felt inside and they don't poke out anymore, it was a game changer for me! The downside of this: is hard (or even impossible) to find the end if you want to unravel haha, so do this after you are completely sure you finished the project!

In my corners I do 2 stitches. Not 3 on the last two rows. I also use a 5.5 for the first three rows and a 5.0 for the last two rows. I do usually have to stitch tighter too to make it work. I only have the black - carnation code color scheme. Even though it’s a pain to have to redo to make it work sometimes, I do love it.

  • @ThaPsyck0

I always had extra color in between rows so I “color change” in between. Leaving go tails behind. Not suppose to have so many tails but one skein with five colors is better than five separate skeins. I’ve tried crocheting with as big as a 9mm (not ideal obviously) and NOTHING made any difference. I have tight tension and even loosened it up but again NOTHING WORKED! So again, I just “color change” in between. Doesn’t bother me so I’ll keep doing it. Also, I’ve only been crocheting for a year and just learned granny squares a few weeks ago. So I think I’m doing pretty well for a noob. 😅😊

Thanks for sharing.

  • @yikesitsconnor

I find it absolutely fascinating that you had to use a 5mm, because I had to use a 6.5(which is my go to size anyways) and still used a looser tension than i normally would for some sections. My tip for anyone using this yarn is to find the halfway point in the new color, mark it with a stitch marker by sticking it through 2 of the 4 plys, and then find the halfway point again for the 1st and 3rd quarters and mark it. That way you're only undoing a quarter of the square at a time. And if you need to get rid of some extra w/o making the stitches too big, make the chains longer than normal because they'll be covered up anyways.
ALSO, I started making a cardigan with this yarn first lmao

I have a pretty tight tension, which I’m aware of. But I’m usually able to meet gauge by sizing up a hook. For this yarn I had to size up from the recommended 5.5 to an 8mm hook. And the squares don’t even look good because of how loose the stitches are. It’s fun to try once but I don’t think I’ll be buying this yarn again

Great video, but as I said, before the yard is too expensive, and it’s too much thinking. I use red heart super saver a lot. The last few skins I have bought seem to be softer than my older ones. I said after I have watched and dried my finish items with dryer sheets That whatever the item is becomes very soft and squishy. I think the washing takes out whatever it is in the yard that makes it a little stiff because it gets very soft and squishy.
I am going on a one years old. So. When I started crocheting and knitting, all we really had was red heart, and went. And believe me, those yarn were not soft. But it was all we had in our local store.
I Red Heary Super sa we because there are so many great colors. I love the stripes too. My other favorite yarn.Lion Brand Ombré. I just bought a couple of cakes of it, and cannot wait to see how it works up
By the way, I generally use a J - 10 on my blankets. I might might go down a couple of sizes for a sweet baby blanket, but not always. I like the wonderful drape I guess with the larger hooks.

i just watched a video before this suggesting things to make this yarn less frustrating. she also suggested adding or subtracting dc to accommodate for the yarn ending too soon or not soon enough. but she also said that the chain in between clusters was helping to use up yarn so u didn't enough up with too much yarn to end with if other rows/colorways have that issue of having too much color left over.
also, am i the only person who crochets over tails? when i join new colors, i hold my tail ends along my piece i'm working wrapping my stitches around the tails, i'll do a couple stitches, tie the ends in a square knot so it doesn't unravel randomly in my piece and then crochet over the tails for a few more stitches to hide the knot and some more tails to secure it and cut off the excess. i try to reduce how many tails that need to be woven in later

I haven’t used this yet, I’m still honestly on the fence about trying it. Just curious though, if you’ve found you keep having to size down on the last 2 rounds wouldn’t it just be easier to start and finish the square in that smaller hook size? It seems like it’s really a headache for sooooo many people.

I think this yarn is interesting as a pooling yarn, but I'm someone who doesn't mind weaving in ends and would rather do that than trial and error to figure out how to make the yarn work for me. I also think that Red Heart is being cut too much slack for releasing inconsistent yarn that doesn't work as advertised (Citrus Twist issues). I don't think its a good beginner yarn will all the adjustments you had to figure out to make it work. I also prefer to pull my yarn from the outside of the skein and the yarn doesn't really allow for that. I agree that it can be a fun novelty, but you have to like to crochet a certain way.

That video was so interesting and that yarn looks interesting (even I can't ordering that on online + I cant buy on store because it's no on Finnish stores). I have one yarn brand (I'm not sure if that yarn brand selling on Canada or even States) Katia insta granny (I saw that last year on my favorite yarn store) it's has five colors too, no need weaving multiple ends, it's has some pattern idea catalog (like: blanket or sweater), but I never buy that (little confess it's was on my yarn shopping/trying list (not real list)), so I don't know how that yarn is good for granny squares. Btw if you had yarn scraps after you made it that granny square cardigan, can you crochet granny square blanket (if you like crocheting blankets) where you crochet one big granny square.

Think i would still prefer to pick my own colors n as for ends poking out i learned how to weave those in so as not too.
Edit to add: i would or might use some of thier color choices as inspiration tho.

Over many years I have made many granny type projects both in rounds and rows. I crochet over the ends after joining. This eliminates most of the dreaded "weaving in tails". This yarn requires such precise gauge and tension leading to ripping out and restarting. It doesn't appeal to me.

Too expensive, and too much work. Your tension has to be just right, and I think most of us have different tensions throughout the day. It just depends on how we feel. I’m pretty sure I would never reach Gage, so I’m not even going to try. Good for you that you have tried it. I admire everyone who has.

Hi, I'm from Brazil and I love your tutorials! I also love the vintage style of crochet, I even want to ask you to help me make a vest that I fell in love with but I can't recreate, maybe it could even be a good idea for your next tutorial, the name is Romantic Victorian Vest 1973. This vest is made in granny squares, but there are parts that I really don't understand and I would be very happy if you could explain to me how to do it.

Changing hook sizes doesn't make it easier. It just makes it more annoying. I'm definitely not buying this. Crochet is definitely similar to handwriting in that everyone's gauge is slightly different, no two people's handwriting is the same either.

I don't agree with you at all! I don't think it's fun to pay for something that doesn't work. When I buy yarn, I don't get to write it of as a business deduction. When I buy yarn on sale, I look for a price of about a penny a yard. This is just everyday acrylic yarn. I think Redheart is laughing their butts off that people actually pay to test and review their faulty product. I also don't like their color combinations. The reason you would never think to put those colors together is because they don't look good together. The only time I would buy separate skeins of color to make granny squares is if the motif was special (like a sunflower). Otherwise I would use scraps. Weaving in the tails is much less stressful than frogging, and frogging over and over again. I will not be buying this yarn. You can have it all!

The beauty of life is that everyone has a different perspective and opinion. I value your opinion and understand why you have it. However, just because you have that opinion, doesn’t mean everyone should have the same. That’s the beauty of life and variety. I personally feel like I agree more with her than your opinion here. That doesn’t diminish how you feel about it, but I don’t agree with you either. I think this yarn is so fun, and I loved working with it, even though it wasn’t perfect. Happy crocheting anyway though! ♥️
