- In this presentation, I explain How A Plant-Based Diet Saved My Life after just having a life-threatening stroke as well as the steps I took afterward to regain my health. Not only did I lose 18lbs and drop my blood pressure back to normal, but I was also able to get off all of my medications in just 30 days.

Six years ago at 59 I was dying of extreme heart disease and diabetes. I went on a plant based diet and my angina and diabetes improved and and went away. I lost lots of weight and became healthy. After three years I developed gun disease and other problems. I learned that I had to supplement with b vitamins and minerals. I included soy in my diet. Feel fine now.
eat the way God intended in the Garden of Eden. Fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. He made us, He knows what is best.

thank you, but are you saved?
@@pastorpeteonthestreet3112 You ma* man
I hope this is legit.
I'am 53 and was born with Tetrology Of Fallots which is a congenital heart condition and have had 4 open heart surgeries. A few years ago I was told that I was in heart failure with the left side of my heart only working at 34% and my heart is also enlarged. In August 2014 some 8 months after my 4th surgery I decided to go vegan, initially as an experiment to see if it would help with my high colesterol and to get off the drugs for it. I was surprised what a quick change the vegan diet made to my colesterol so as a result I stuck to it. Recently I had an MRI & CT Scan as the Cardiologist had talked about the possibilty of me needing a pacemaker and they wanted to investigate further. When I had the appointment with my Cardiologist to discuss my result I got a shock. The MRI showed that I had scaring on the heart, and they think I may have a condition called cardiac sarcoidosis though I will need more tests to confirm this. The day before I got the results about the scaring & sarciodosis I decided to stop eating all the vegan crap, like the fake meat burgers, chips, oil etc and also started intimitent fasting. So for my diet I have gone WFPB with no oil and as a result of this withing 4 days I have lost almost 2kg or around 4 pounds.
Today is my turning point. I'm not feeling well today. My vision seems to be off, and I just feel weird. Also getting more and more dizziness lately. I said to myself......."boy I hope I'm not having a stroke," as I was eating french fries and drinking iced tea. Then I open youtube and there you were telling your story. I am taking this as a sign to kick my own *ss and get on a strict healthy plant based diet.
I've always followed you. I think your recipes are amazing! I flip between vegan and vegetarian with a high concentration on french fries, ice cream and pizza. After watching your video, I'm done with eating the crap. This is exactly what I needed to hear to get my tale moving. THANK YOU! ❤❤❤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😊
How are you doing?
Fantastic! Reversed EVERYTHING!!!!!!! This way of living is worth it! I found out that I have a gluten intolerance, which was causing the rash on my face, so eating this way really helped my skin issues. I also supplement with B12, D3, omega 3 & 6. The omega helps my dry eye syndrome. I feel better, I look better, I think better, I sleep better. I literally reversed everything.
@@MissTerran Just FYI french fries and ice tea is vegan ahahahah
Yes, I know. 😅😅 My point was that the greasy fries and sugary iced tea are no longer a part of my diet. I still eat fries but not deep fried in oil.
@@gilmacau9080 Yes I know. 😅😅 My point was that I was eating fries deep fried in oil and a drink filled with sugar and I wanted to try the SOS free lifestyle, like Chuck described in this video.
Thank you sir, glad to see your quality of life improved! Best wishes for the rest of your journey!👍💯
Thanks for sharing your presentation. I was glad to watch it as I missed it the other day.
Amazing story! Thank you so much for sharing your experience.🙏🏾😊
Thank you for this! I really needed it! 😌 Stay Well Chuck!!!

I too recently joined the Esselstyn lifestyle, so happy to find oil free nut free recipes. Godspeed brother.
You know Chuck, everything you've said in this video is true and correct. I don't know why but the little saboteur in my head keeps telling me I need to keep looking for my personal beef flavoured magic bullet 😒. Many times as well, vloggers irritate me so I turn away. I know what I need to do and you've only confirmed it in this video. I'll bite the bullet, so to speak and get back into it in the morning. Thanks for sharing your scary time with us, and thanks for being so very human, and contactable. X
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us!
As a Vegan/Plant Based Nutritional Health Coach (focusing on lifestyle transition), I see so many people whose health could benefit from leaning toward a plant-based diet but they just don't have the guidance.. It's really difficult to overcome health obstacles and flip your culinary lifestyle upside down, so definitely stand proud of your accomplishments!
I hope a lot of people will learn from your words of wisdom. ❤❤❤
Wonderful presentation Chcuk! Thank you!
I suffered from metabolic syndrome (obesity, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar). I went whole food plant based no sugar oil or salt and I lost 65 pounds, all my conditions greatly improved, my gums stopped bleeding, and erections and energy returned. I used to have an appetite that was never satisfied; whole foods cured it. I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Finally, the food is cheap-Beans, lentils, rice, potatoes and seasonal apples. Also, I save money by not having to buy pills or visit the Doctor. I am thankful to all the vegans who suffered attacks to reveal the truth to me.
Thank you for sharing! Just found your channel via Krocks in The Kitchen! I was watching a video they posted 3 years ago of your recipe for marinated carrot hot dogs! New subscriber to your channel!

Thank you Chuck. Wonderful presentation. This was so informative at so many levels.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! You are a true inspiration Chuck ❤️
Congrats on your transition to WFPB! I began eating this way after a health scare 8 months ago. Things are going well for me.

I think used to sell you test and measurement equipment in the 90s. I am now plant based too. I remembered your name. Wonderful video. 💚🌱
Thank you so much for sharing your story....love your recipes too.

Your "everyman" presentation is gold. I feel inspired to go back to "The Basics". I feel letter "e" should be NO BREAD. (end of sentence). Not a whole lot going on between mid-October to mid-November. No problem skipping Halloween. I think I'll give this a try.
I’m starting my plant based journey now after having a health scare!! This was a well put together presentation!…I’m also going to check out that movie!
Hi Chuck. On Oct. 3rd, I turned 83. Not sure how I got here, but I can say that I've been off and on Vegan/whole food, and Vegetarian for about 40 years. I'll say one thing, vegetarian has been just an excuse to eat badly. Bread and cheese (switched to bread and avocado, but it really doesn't work for me) comes to mind. I don't know how anyone can call themselves vegetarian, eating so badly. Maybe that was just me. I used to watch you when you were 1st posting, but then I wondered, after a while, how anyone can still call themselves a brand new vegan. Obviously I didn't get the point. Amazing that I found you again now as I can use the reminder that our past can catch up with us. Glad you're doing better. Not only our past, but our indiscretions as we struggle to get it right. Jeff Novick says to get the food right first. I can try to forgive myself, but I still want my 'cake' and eat it too. I try to adhere to that old saying, "One day at a time." That way I can not indulge today, and hopefully the todays will add up. I don't have a lot of time to play this game with my health so it's important to let go, once and for all, of the items that might be adding up to sickness. Thank you for your persistence to wellness, and for posting it against all odds.
Got to admit, its very interesting to see someone of your age on RUclips and also so open to the idea of veganism.
@@michaelbalfour3170 ... Thanks, I guess. Can't really claim to be a vegan, but whole foods, plants only, no oil is my plan. Funny that you say I'm open to this. My generation is the generation that started the conversation about it all in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. We were scoffed at, still are, but it's better. Dr. pritikin, and Dr. Ornish were influential, and finally Dr. McDougall, and others. Nice to have it break into the culture a little. Makes it easier. Finally did 100% plant based (Macrobiotics) in the early 80s, and got sick doing some dairy, Gained some weight, but improved when I got back on track. I don't know any other way to be. For my health, for the animals, and for the planet. Thanks for the post. Wishing you well in your plants based efforts.
@@smallfootprint2961 That's a very nice comment, thanks for the good wishes. You are right, your generation coined the term vegan in the 60s, so I guess I shouldn't be so surprised to see someone your age into it. So likewise, best wishes.
This is such an amazing testimony. Thanks for sharing, great explanations
Good video Chuck !
Thank you 🙏 for sharing your story! I need all the help
Great testimony. Thanks for sharing.
You are such an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your story ❤️ I have started my vegan journey. I had high cholesterol, high blood pressure, pre-diabetes I was having difficulty breathing. I was overweight.
I feel so much better now. One day at a time improving my health: eating healthy, doing exercise, meditating :]
Awesome video! Thanks!
Wow! What a story!
I can relate to the part of the video that talked about how members of your family were becoming sick with the standard western diet. It's human nature, but people change when they want to change. It can be frustrating to try to persuade loved ones to at least try a WFPB diet; so, all one can really do is set an example for others. Thanks for sharing your story.
Some people just arrogant. I saw a post saying eat what you want cause don’t care what you eat you still going to die
Thank you... Your post actually but me in the life in general . Can't make people do things .. but it doesn't mean I can't/shouldn't.. keep trying and learn and do/ apply what I am learning about. Food and other ways..
You are actually an honest inspiration 👏
Congratulations, thank you for the inspiration. Belated Happy Birthday.

Thank you for making this video. It has a lot of great information. Happy to see that you’re doing well after your stroke. My 73 year old mother and I went vegan on Thanksgiving of this past. I’m doing my best to help her reverse her health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and help her reduce her A1C. At this point, I am looking for a plant based doctor to monitor her progress. Thank you for putting out informative and motivational content. Take care.

@@brandnewvegan I had a stroke eating corpses. No fibre if you eat animals in cheese and eggs. I didn’t know that. But now I do !!! Three months in the hospital, surgery on my brain, very large, gone 🧠 3/ quarters of it gone !!! I have to translate now because the words, Half of it I don’t know 🤷🏼♂️📃. 7 years vegan !!!! Salt is hard arteries, and of course meat and cheese etc. I am now 43 years. And I’ve gotten bigger and stronger and fitter on a plant based diet. 10 kg heavier ✅❤️💪😬. And I don’t go to the gym. I cook very good vegan curry and vegan burritos and mustard seeds and mustard powder 3 times daily, and mixed spices and loads more. Good work friend 😊

I have a T1D child (10 years with T1D) and the average A1C is about 10. I would love to get more info on any specific diet changes that helped with this person's vision improvement. Also wondering if better blood circulation in the feet was noticed. Looking for something to help motivate changes.
Great video, thank you!
So I had a stroke brought on by a blocked carotid artery at 68% surgeon said you need endarterectomy second option wait one year and rescan. I then went low fat no oil plant based and just had another cat scan this month and in one year on stead of progressing the % dropped to 50%
That's amazing and just goes to show The Power of Food! Good job!!!
Thais for your information. It very good.
Great video!. You lived a stressful life, stressful job, worked grave yard, a smoker and worse of all ate a SAD diet for 40 years. I am surprised you didn’t have a heart attack or massive stroke in 2008. I guess it was the diet change prevented this. It’s a blessing that your stroke symptoms were mild. Great job sticking to vegan. For the nurses who told that you that plants have cholesterol. RAW (not cooked)nuts and seeds will raise your HLD cholesterol. That is the good cholesterol that prevents you from having stroke and heart attack. The LDL cholesterol is the killer.
…… plants have the good HDL cholesterol while animal and animal products have the killer LDL. However, processed plant based oils like canola and margarine have transfat which will raise your Ldl. That’s why we should stay away from processed oils.
What was your sodium intake like? How did you stop smoking?
Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I'm kinda new to being vegan but not really new, I started July of 2018. First I started w/no meat no eggs. Then pretty quickly it became no cheese. I do smoke organic tobacco but I smoke much less than I did. Smoking is down to no more than 2 packs a month most times its under two packs.
I don't cook with salt, oil or sugar at all. But i have eaten food at restaurants made w/salt oil and sugar on occassion but most of my food is cooked at home. Before I found lectures by dr esselstyn i didn't cook with salt or sugar but occasionally used oil. He said something about focus on your diet and your smoking will go down. It made it less stressful to focus on food rather than on stopping smoking. I've continued to eat vegan, I've craved cheese sometimes but have been staying away with the help of "culture kitchen's" cashew reserves, but I'm now cautious of my nut intake so I don't buy it every time I shop.
My bp and cholesterol went down a few weeks after I started being vegan. I wish you the best, and that you have no more strokes. I've been writing about being vegan also, I'm not on RUclips with the food stuff yet but I share info I read and watch on a website, it helps me also.
Thank you agajn, I'm glad i found your RUclips channel. Now I can add it yo my list.
I'm glad you are ok now and you have good cognition and speech!!! It is scary about someone on whole food-plant based. It's more rare but still possible. I assume you hadn't been checking your cholesterol and blood pressure. I keep tabs on my blood pressure and I don't eat salt any longer so hopefully that helps. However, I did 'eat like crap' through high school until 5 years ago.
It is so cool you could talk to Dr. Esselstyn.
Inspirational
Thank you for telling your atory! I am on whole food plant base diet now for 3 months. Lost 18kgs now. Still need to loose 35kgs. Went over to this way of eating because of cholesterol and high blood pressure. Is it ok to eat Buckwheat and quinoa? I LOVE that! I do not use oil at all but I do eat nuts and seeds. I will skip that for awhile then as well. I eat lots of legumes (think i will go slower on the edemame!) and love my whole grains like bulgar, buckwheat and quinoa. I eat alot of leavy greens, sweetpotatoes and other fruits and veggies. I do LOVE my berries!
Nice story. Do did everything right! I'm sure your channel inspires others to be healthier. Good for you! Always beileve, food is medicine. Avoid taking medication if at all possible.
is that your kitchen??? because I LOVE IT
I so much loved this video so much information what can happen if you don’t change the way I eat.
Well done for turning your life back around. I have been vegan for 6 years. It seems very unusual that this should happen. I am wondering whether there were other factors that could have caused a stroke e.g a stressful event, taking a medication and this being a side effect or salt in your diet. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing this. I have been vegetarian for a year. I haven't fully crossed over to vegan yet. I am type 2 diabetic. I want to get off the meds. I have lost 40 lbs so far. Heart disease runs in my family. My doctor told me I will never get off the meds. I am doing this on my own. I am exercising. I drink water. You are an inspiration.
Keep it up I went plant based 5 years to reverse my diabetes and exercise regularly. Not at age 70 I’m in a strength training plan 3x per week. No senior at my gym lifts any weights seriously
Vegan is definately an upgrade!!
you can do this!!!
J Coffee your doctor incorrect long as you juice you will get off my Mother did see the doctor say that so they can keep getting paid for you take them medicine
Ask your doctor what their kickback is from keeping you on meds even if you don't need them. After that, get another doctor.
I watched your video and it motivated me to get it together. Thank you.
Awesome testimony, I’m going vegan 🌱 for sure 😊Thank you
I love your story and so happy for your health improvement. I started WFPB in Feb. I see some improvements like BP normal, about 10 lbs weight loss, T2D in better control (no meds). I know I have cardiac arterial buildup and in January started having some chest pressure that I knew was cardiac. I have had no chest pressures since May, so it took 3 months to resolve and has stayed away 5 months now. Thankfully I found WFPB before I had a heart attack! I do love tofu too. I am trying to eat it only a few times a week if that. I do have to cut out the nuts (mainly raw cashews). You are a real inspiration. Thank you for sharing. I’m going to make your chili today. Thanks for the video on that! I’ve subscribed. It’s frustrating when I watch some vegan videos and they use oil. I don’t follow them after that. I’m definitely following you. Keep up the good work!
MaryAnne do you have any stent or bypass?
I am male 54 years old. In February 2021 I got a stent on my artery coronary left , then after a week I stopped medication because my heartbeat was not normal, I think it was an arrhythmia or arterial fibrillation, I couldn't sleep at night, I was sweating.
So… I didn’t know what to do, and around 3 months I stopped to eat all kind of meat, then I started keto diet which increased my Total cholesterol up to 340 in 2 months, then I discovered Dr Esselstyn who recommends plants based diet , so .. I started WFPB and in 3 months later I dropped my total cholesterol to 139. I follow the diet very strictly, no oil and no nuts!
@@gabriel65304 I’m glad you found Dr Esselstyn and his recommendations. I have not had any cardiac events so, no, I don’t have a stent or bypass. The WFPB lifestyle is my stent! I hope I can continue without any cardiac events. I enjoy WFPB much more than keto/low carb. Do you?
@@deedeemac I have no choice if I want to live without any operation ( bypass or stent again) 😊
Wonderfully done! :) it's per my understanding that even if one is plant-based, if you are overweight and eating more then need, your body can naturally create way more cholesterol then needed, and perhaps that's when get an increase risk of strokes. ♡ it's just my personal thoughts. I'm just glad that your stroke didn't cause long term problems, and thank goodness you were plant-based!! What a wonderful story you have to share 😀
Hmm. I'm overweight, vegan 5 years now, cholesterol below 150 last 3 years. Perhaps it's a different factor leading to stroke. Low clotting blood? Or a random clot dislodged as body is cleaning out old plaque from blood vessels?
Morro, I love it! So beautiful there!
Your recipes inspired me to improve all my recipes by removing oil and adding more whole foods. I have made your chili a dozen times which my family and friends love. In fact some of them have continued to eat plant based because of your recipes. Thank you for being you.
Yes, remove all the oil ASAP. My mom and I have been eating a plant based diet, but too much oil. She got a stroke and there’s a lot of artery thickening, according to he CAT scan and MRI. She’s in the hospital as I write this. She can’t speak and her right side is not moving. She’s going to be placed on plavix and asparjn and she knows the side effects, because she’s a chemist. Her mind to her is everything. When she comes home I’m being super strict with the diet. She lives with me and I can make sure she eats right.
I came to this video precisely because my mom and I are vegan and last night she went to the hospital die a stroke. Remove all the oil, we didn’t
My mom will be prescribed plavix and aspirin and I’m afraid of the symptoms

I stayed on blood thinners after my stint placement for about a year and a half. I refused to stay on them the rest of my life. I do still take aspirin, however.
I wonder how much eating foods that have an anticoagulant effect may help with not needing to take anticoagulants to prevent a stroke. Garlic, turmeric, ginger, lots of herbs like oregano act as anticoagulants. I have a genetic coagulation disorder that makes me more than 20 times more likely to get a clot than someone without it. My mother had two embolisms in her 50s and was on warfarin the rest of her life. Until a person has an occurrence, they don’t prescribe any. I’m in my 60s, have been mostly, aiming for Whole Food plant based, for several years and I eat a lot of these and haven’t had an occurrence of clots, hopefully won’t. I don’t know how much is enough, but I think eating them regularly probably helps.

@@carmensmith6360 Ok, advice I can give:
Eat: Wholegrains like porridge and whole meal pasta, Proteins like Tempeh, beans and quinoa, Half the plate healthy greens like kale, broccoli etc (not spinach), Flax seeds.
Avoid 90% of time: Sugary stuff, trans/sat fat, fake meat, refined grains.
Substitute: salt for potassium chloride and iodized salt, cheese for fortified nutritional yeast (when cheese is added to dish not on burgers etc. where its there for texture), dairy for fortified plant milk and calcium set tofu.
Supplement: B12 2k mcg , Vitamin D, DHA, choline.
Drink water or carbonated if you really miss soda (no soda), I am tall so I drink a gallon daily still tap water. Stick to infusions for the best benefits when having hot drinks, green tea, mint tea etc.
Hope this helps, if there is anything you disagree with or anyone else does, let me know.
Thanks
I wonder if you were getting enough Vitamin C in your diet? It is heavily involved in collagen production & the strength of the arteries. It is possible to be plant-based but still not get enough C.
I had a stroke 2021 but I had a brain bleed! After turning raw I feel good now! Did u get on plan since your stroke?
Thank you for your video. I forwarded your video to my brother, age 71, who is eating the SAD diet. He has high blood pressure and diabetes. Maybe if he watched your video, he can save himself. Wishing you a long and healthy life.
I remember "health food" of the 80s. The problem with the food back then was everything was BROWN. The flour was all whole wheat, so anything baked was brown. No refined sugar so molasses made sweets brown. Lentils...brown. And even if you got the food somewhat looking like the unhealthy version, the taste was way off. Anyway, I noticed you pay attention to color in your recipes. That's really a step up.
Do you take any ongoing supplements for your circulatory system? I've been taking systemic proteolytic enzymes for the past couple of months. After additional research, I've decided to switch to a bit more expensive product called Boluoke (Lumbrokinase) once I finish my current product. It's made by the company Canada RNA and there is information on their site about the product, the research, and its benefits. I have no affiliation with them and learned about them though one of my doctors who doesn't always jump right to pharmaceuticals. They have their time and place, too, of course. Anyway, I'm glad you're doing well. Congratulations on escaping the rat race and retiring.
with slides, people will try to read them so they should only have prompts and not the full text of what you are reading ..

Researched after released whole Food Plant Based because my doctor told me to go home and eat white foods...white bread, potatoes, rice, bananas. It didn't sound healthy! That wasn't going to fix me! I researched and found something else. No symptoms! All gone! I felt like I would die early. Now I might live a long life...
I love it hahaha "white food" some doctor!!
Very good video and I like your humor. So, you changed your diet long before the stroke and B/P still high? I don't get it. I've got everything out of my diet going on for decades and I still have high B/P, the only way I can get it down to normal and below, is a day of hard labor, stacking wood, cutting wood, working outdoors to get it down to normal. I don't get it.
It's hereditary for some, takes lots of exercise for others, and a piece of cake for the lucky few. Upping your greens might help, get that extra boost of nitric oxide
@@brandnewvegan Yep, agreed. Nitric Oxide is amazing! Dr. Essy recommends eating a handful of greens, 6 times a day! Curious, were you still consuming processed vegan foods before the stroke? You mention no Oil but what about Salt/Sugar? WFPB SOS free is ideal as I'm sure you know! Btw I'm a future doc, big fans of all the ones you mentioned, they are role models for me! I'm trying my best to get my colleagues on board, too. Thanks for sharing your amazing story!
BTW, If you'd like to collab one day and do an interview/chat for your channel, that would be awesome! I'm also a WFPB Nutrition/holistic health coach, and nutritional biochemistry researcher (nutritional science fascinates me!), so we could nerd out a bit as well! Would email be ok?
What a great story chuck. So interesting. I'm going to clean up my pb diet some, just from listening to you. Chuck, can't you eat cracked wheat or whole wheat sourdough bread? It's pretty good and not bad for your health, i don't believe. I'm so glad you're ok.
It was really scary when I was dizzy plus hearing I had A/fib not once but twice. ! My last was this year!
Fast, fasting, fasting.
Hi i was wondering about deficiencies like b vitamins or protein...any tips?
How about omega 3?
No protein deficiencies at all - and my wife's was just checked. B12 you'll need to take - and omega 3's you can get in flaxseed, walnuts. or chia
@@brandnewvegan is a plant based diet good for anxiety and mental health? Ive also struggled with memory ...does it help that too?
I only drink when my wife and I go on a cruise! I really don’t drink or smoke! I go walking almost everyday between 12’099 to 18’009 steps
Ironic that your voice sounds like like the guy on the old motel 6 commercial.Bob Model I think. Anyway rather soothing. Thank you for your work and the video
And I’ll leave the lights on for you 🤪
I thought I was doing a good job of WFPB eating until I suddenly began gaining weight. Now my heart rate is going up…. I think I better try a re boot!! Chuck are there any of your recipes that you are avoiding since this happened?
Here are some of my "safe" recipes... www.brandnewvegan.com/recipes/back2basics
Exercise and do breathing exercises for heart rate going up!
