  • In this presentation, I explain How A Plant-Based Diet Saved My Life after just having a life-threatening stroke as well as the steps I took afterward to regain my health. Not only did I lose 18lbs and drop my blood pressure back to normal, but I was also able to get off all of my medications in just 30 days.

Six years ago at 59 I was dying of extreme heart disease and diabetes. I went on a plant based diet and my angina and diabetes improved and and went away. I lost lots of weight and became healthy. After three years I developed gun disease and other problems. I learned that I had to supplement with b vitamins and minerals. I included soy in my diet. Feel fine now.

I'am 53 and was born with Tetrology Of Fallots which is a congenital heart condition and have had 4 open heart surgeries. A few years ago I was told that I was in heart failure with the left side of my heart only working at 34% and my heart is also enlarged. In August 2014 some 8 months after my 4th surgery I decided to go vegan, initially as an experiment to see if it would help with my high colesterol and to get off the drugs for it. I was surprised what a quick change the vegan diet made to my colesterol so as a result I stuck to it. Recently I had an MRI & CT Scan as the Cardiologist had talked about the possibilty of me needing a pacemaker and they wanted to investigate further. When I had the appointment with my Cardiologist to discuss my result I got a shock. The MRI showed that I had scaring on the heart, and they think I may have a condition called cardiac sarcoidosis though I will need more tests to confirm this. The day before I got the results about the scaring & sarciodosis I decided to stop eating all the vegan crap, like the fake meat burgers, chips, oil etc and also started intimitent fasting. So for my diet I have gone WFPB with no oil and as a result of this withing 4 days I have lost almost 2kg or around 4 pounds.

Today is my turning point. I'm not feeling well today. My vision seems to be off, and I just feel weird. Also getting more and more dizziness lately. I said to myself......."boy I hope I'm not having a stroke," as I was eating french fries and drinking iced tea. Then I open youtube and there you were telling your story. I am taking this as a sign to kick my own *ss and get on a strict healthy plant based diet.
I've always followed you. I think your recipes are amazing! I flip between vegan and vegetarian with a high concentration on french fries, ice cream and pizza. After watching your video, I'm done with eating the crap. This is exactly what I needed to hear to get my tale moving. THANK YOU! ❤❤❤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😊

Fantastic! Reversed EVERYTHING!!!!!!! This way of living is worth it! I found out that I have a gluten intolerance, which was causing the rash on my face, so eating this way really helped my skin issues. I also supplement with B12, D3, omega 3 & 6. The omega helps my dry eye syndrome. I feel better, I look better, I think better, I sleep better. I literally reversed everything.

I suffered from metabolic syndrome (obesity, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar). I went whole food plant based no sugar oil or salt and I lost 65 pounds, all my conditions greatly improved, my gums stopped bleeding, and erections and energy returned. I used to have an appetite that was never satisfied; whole foods cured it. I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Finally, the food is cheap-Beans, lentils, rice, potatoes and seasonal apples. Also, I save money by not having to buy pills or visit the Doctor. I am thankful to all the vegans who suffered attacks to reveal the truth to me.

Hi Chuck. On Oct. 3rd, I turned 83. Not sure how I got here, but I can say that I've been off and on Vegan/whole food, and Vegetarian for about 40 years. I'll say one thing, vegetarian has been just an excuse to eat badly. Bread and cheese (switched to bread and avocado, but it really doesn't work for me) comes to mind. I don't know how anyone can call themselves vegetarian, eating so badly. Maybe that was just me. I used to watch you when you were 1st posting, but then I wondered, after a while, how anyone can still call themselves a brand new vegan. Obviously I didn't get the point. Amazing that I found you again now as I can use the reminder that our past can catch up with us. Glad you're doing better. Not only our past, but our indiscretions as we struggle to get it right. Jeff Novick says to get the food right first. I can try to forgive myself, but I still want my 'cake' and eat it too. I try to adhere to that old saying, "One day at a time." That way I can not indulge today, and hopefully the todays will add up. I don't have a lot of time to play this game with my health so it's important to let go, once and for all, of the items that might be adding up to sickness. Thank you for your persistence to wellness, and for posting it against all odds.

@@michaelbalfour3170 ... Thanks, I guess. Can't really claim to be a vegan, but whole foods, plants only, no oil is my plan. Funny that you say I'm open to this. My generation is the generation that started the conversation about it all in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. We were scoffed at, still are, but it's better. Dr. pritikin, and Dr. Ornish were influential, and finally Dr. McDougall, and others. Nice to have it break into the culture a little. Makes it easier. Finally did 100% plant based (Macrobiotics) in the early 80s, and got sick doing some dairy, Gained some weight, but improved when I got back on track. I don't know any other way to be. For my health, for the animals, and for the planet. Thanks for the post. Wishing you well in your plants based efforts.

I am surprised you didn’t have a heart attack or massive stroke in 2008. I guess it was the diet change prevented this. It’s a blessing that your stroke symptoms were mild. Great job sticking to vegan. For the nurses who told that you that plants have cholesterol. RAW (not cooked)nuts and seeds will raise your HLD cholesterol. That is the good cholesterol that prevents you from having stroke and heart attack. The LDL cholesterol is the killer.

    • @hikinggirl1601
      @hikinggirl1601 Год назад

…… plants have the good HDL cholesterol while animal and animal products have the killer LDL. However, processed plant based oils like canola and margarine have transfat which will raise your Ldl. That’s why we should stay away from processed oils.

What was your sodium intake like? How did you stop smoking?
Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I'm kinda new to being vegan but not really new, I started July of 2018. First I started w/no meat no eggs. Then pretty quickly it became no cheese. I do smoke organic tobacco but I smoke much less than I did. Smoking is down to no more than 2 packs a month most times its under two packs.
I don't cook with salt, oil or sugar at all. But i have eaten food at restaurants made w/salt oil and sugar on occassion but most of my food is cooked at home. Before I found lectures by dr esselstyn i didn't cook with salt or sugar but occasionally used oil. He said something about focus on your diet and your smoking will go down. It made it less stressful to focus on food rather than on stopping smoking. I've continued to eat vegan, I've craved cheese sometimes but have been staying away with the help of "culture kitchen's" cashew reserves, but I'm now cautious of my nut intake so I don't buy it every time I shop.
My bp and cholesterol went down a few weeks after I started being vegan. I wish you the best, and that you have no more strokes. I've been writing about being vegan also, I'm not on RUclips with the food stuff yet but I share info I read and watch on a website, it helps me also.
Thank you agajn, I'm glad i found your RUclips channel. Now I can add it yo my list.

I assume you hadn't been checking your cholesterol and blood pressure. I keep tabs on my blood pressure and I don't eat salt any longer so hopefully that helps. However, I did 'eat like crap' through high school until 5 years ago.
It is so cool you could talk to Dr. Esselstyn.

I love your story and so happy for your health improvement. I started WFPB in Feb. I see some improvements like BP normal, about 10 lbs weight loss, T2D in better control (no meds). I know I have cardiac arterial buildup and in January started having some chest pressure that I knew was cardiac. I have had no chest pressures since May, so it took 3 months to resolve and has stayed away 5 months now. Thankfully I found WFPB before I had a heart attack! I do love tofu too. I am trying to eat it only a few times a week if that. I do have to cut out the nuts (mainly raw cashews). You are a real inspiration. Thank you for sharing. I’m going to make your chili today. Thanks for the video on that! I’ve subscribed. It’s frustrating when I watch some vegan videos and they use oil. I don’t follow them after that. I’m definitely following you. Keep up the good work!

MaryAnne do you have any stent or bypass?
I am male 54 years old. In February 2021 I got a stent on my artery coronary left , then after a week I stopped medication because my heartbeat was not normal, I think it was an arrhythmia or arterial fibrillation, I couldn't sleep at night, I was sweating.
So… I didn’t know what to do, and around 3 months I stopped to eat all kind of meat, then I started keto diet which increased my Total cholesterol up to 340 in 2 months, then I discovered Dr Esselstyn who recommends plants based diet , so .. I started WFPB and in 3 months later I dropped my total cholesterol to 139. I follow the diet very strictly, no oil and no nuts!

Wonderfully done! :) it's per my understanding that even if one is plant-based, if you are overweight and eating more then need, your body can naturally create way more cholesterol then needed, and perhaps that's when get an increase risk of strokes. ♡ it's just my personal thoughts. I'm just glad that your stroke didn't cause long term problems, and thank goodness you were plant-based!! What a wonderful story you have to share 😀

Yes, remove all the oil ASAP. My mom and I have been eating a plant based diet, but too much oil. She got a stroke and there’s a lot of artery thickening, according to he CAT scan and MRI. She’s in the hospital as I write this. She can’t speak and her right side is not moving. She’s going to be placed on plavix and asparjn and she knows the side effects, because she’s a chemist. Her mind to her is everything. When she comes home I’m being super strict with the diet. She lives with me and I can make sure she eats right.

I wonder how much eating foods that have an anticoagulant effect may help with not needing to take anticoagulants to prevent a stroke. Garlic, turmeric, ginger, lots of herbs like oregano act as anticoagulants. I have a genetic coagulation disorder that makes me more than 20 times more likely to get a clot than someone without it. My mother had two embolisms in her 50s and was on warfarin the rest of her life. Until a person has an occurrence, they don’t prescribe any. I’m in my 60s, have been mostly, aiming for Whole Food plant based, for several years and I eat a lot of these and haven’t had an occurrence of clots, hopefully won’t. I don’t know how much is enough, but I think eating them regularly probably helps.

Eat: Wholegrains like porridge and whole meal pasta, Proteins like Tempeh, beans and quinoa, Half the plate healthy greens like kale, broccoli etc (not spinach), Flax seeds.
Avoid 90% of time: Sugary stuff, trans/sat fat, fake meat, refined grains.
Substitute: salt for potassium chloride and iodized salt, cheese for fortified nutritional yeast (when cheese is added to dish not on burgers etc. where its there for texture), dairy for fortified plant milk and calcium set tofu.
      Supplement: B12 2k mcg , Vitamin D, DHA, choline.
Drink water or carbonated if you really miss soda (no soda), I am tall so I drink a gallon daily still tap water. Stick to infusions for the best benefits when having hot drinks, green tea, mint tea etc.

I remember "health food" of the 80s. The problem with the food back then was everything was BROWN. The flour was all whole wheat, so anything baked was brown. No refined sugar so molasses made sweets brown. Lentils...brown. And even if you got the food somewhat looking like the unhealthy version, the taste was way off. Anyway, I noticed you pay attention to color in your recipes. That's really a step up.

After additional research, I've decided to switch to a bit more expensive product called Boluoke (Lumbrokinase) once I finish my current product. It's made by the company Canada RNA and there is information on their site about the product, the research, and its benefits. I have no affiliation with them and learned about them though one of my doctors who doesn't always jump right to pharmaceuticals. They have their time and place, too, of course. Anyway, I'm glad you're doing well. Congratulations on escaping the rat race and retiring.
