- The complete transmission swap from the DX to the Si transmission. The Si transmission feels fantastic even on the DPFI setup. I still have an annoying oil leak but I believe that is coming from the distributor and the oil pan gasket.

I like how you have one song that allways plays in the background. It's cool.
+JDMTurboful thanks, I did it for a while on these videos. I love that song too! I haven't used it in a while though.
Hey just so you know, for anyone that may be in our situation, when you go to put the transmission back on, theres quite a few things that he didn’t mention whatsoever.
1) you need to align your clutch with your flywheel (there should be a tool that comes with your clutch to do just that)
2) When putting your flywheel back on, make sure to tighten the bolts in a star pattern, and you also need to use a certain amount of torque. There are tools out there that can do this, and apparently its pretty important. 87 ft-lbs of torque on the bolts for the flywheel seems to be good.
3) when putting the pressure plate for the clutch on, 19 ft-lbs of torque on those is good.
If you’ve aligned everything with the to and torque everything on right, then you should be able to jack the transmission back up and lift it to be aligned again, then it should slot on.
I hope this helps
Thanks for the added tips!
Please keep making more videos like this, they have been very helpful!
I'm working on it!
Jon Widmer great video its very helpful thanks for all the info going to remove my transmission on my dohc zc
great video as always, even though I have previously done these type of repairs. I enjoyed watching the whole way through, lots of great information to be learned here. Can't wait to see part 2
Thanks Alfredo, appreciate the comment!!
you got a great step by step process. thanks for creating this video.
You're welcome, hope it helps!
Hey great videos! Keep up the great auto repair content covering the Fantastic Honda vehicles. It's much Appreciated.
Thank you, I'll try
Very helpful video. I got my 91 civic clutch done watching your awesome video.
Glad to hear!
nice vid, keep it up, i will need a new clutch for my 92 si soon, its nice to see how other people go about doing the job.
👍🏻
All your videos are very informative and awesome, keep up the great work bro!
Man, thanks! That means a lot to me!
thanks so much! this video has gone into all the detail I need to get started on my civic. thanks again!
Awesome, I love to inspire!!

Badass man, and thanks!!!
Fubar Garage Save up $500 and try to find one with a shit engine
I have no idea if you’ll even see this, but I bought a ‘90 EF base with a 4 speed 2 weeks ago and after only 5 days the transmission went out. I watched this video a handful of times and felt like I could do the swap. Long story short I’m in the swap $200 including a 5 speed from an ‘89 CRX Si and little things here and there. It saved me $1400 from the transmission shop quote. My buddy and I got it done in my driveway in about 8 hours. Thank you so much for this video man! You saved me so much money and this video was perfect and walked me through the swap like I was a pro!
Love to hear it man! Glad this helped you through the process. Feel free to send me some of the money you saved. 😂😂😂
Garage Built Hondas I actually preordered a shirt to support you because the video was such a help! Lol
Thank you so much, glad to hear it!!
Very good video. I'll be replacing my CR-V's transmission, so this was a good preview with some minor differences. I have the same HF ball joint tool, and I put a ton of grease on the forks to avoid tearing the boot. I also leave the castle nut flush on the end of the stud when using the tool to avoid damaging the threads. I'm actually more fond of the 1/2" ratchet-between-lower arm-and-knuckle-stomp method.
That works good too. I really like the harbor joint tool though, and leaving the nut on is smart!!
Great Vid Man! Best EF channel on youtube hands down. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks EFvtecYO!! I appreciate the great comment!
Man I enjoyed watching this! thankfully I don't have to do anything to mine but good to be prepared.. excellent upload.
Thank you! I've been neglecting my wagon this year. Wish I had more time to enjoy it!
Grate video man it's very detail and I wish I had this guide when I did my five speed swap
Thanks!! I'm trying to build up the RUclips EF library or how-to's! Lol
Great video, ill be using this again some day when I have to pull mine. You make it look too easy!
Thanks, hope it makes your job "easy" when you get to it!

Glad it was helpful!

I couldnt find where the vehicle speed sensor cable connected to the transmission. Bro your videos are gold thank you. Ill see if i can get to it from the top
Good luck!
Thanks bro, this vid made it easy for me.

the most helpful videos come from one and only GARAGE BUILD HONDAS!!!!(i cant remove this little pin.if i drill it and put a bolt there is ok ? or not to risk it? )
Thanks! Yes that should be just fine.
@@GarageBuiltHondas thank you!
Thanks a lot for the video helped very very very much
👍🏻
Ayyyy Goldwater is the shit!
Forgot to mention the transmission oil. I know all cars are different in the amount they take and all but was kind of hoping you explained it a little bit. Great video though and I can't wait to see part 2!
My bad man, I did add a card to a video I made about a transmission drain/fill on an EF. You can view it through this video at the 17:00 mark. Or click the info button to see the cards. I feel like everyone has their own opinion but I always stick to OEM required fluids and amounts. These transmissions required regular 10w-30 motor oil in 1.8 quarts. I just filled up using that.
+J Wid Films oh cool! Thanks for adding that! I did not realize you had a video showing how. I'm right there with you, stick to OEM!
Sweet video brother.
Thank you!
"I've cleaned one of these by hand before and it's a real pain in the a..."
Me: how hard could it be?
3 hours later: Ok you were right, that was a huge pain in the ass LOL
I also nearly went mad trying to get the last 1/2 inch because the clutch release lever needed to be less "relaxed" so the fork bolt
wasn't tipped up high enough to hit the clutch smh. Wondering if you've ever had that problem.
Thanks for the dope videos man!!
Hahahahaha, told you. It's really time consuming cleaning them.
I haven't had that issue yet.
Thanks for watching Derek!
What is the torques specs for the bolts that connects to the engine?
I like it it helped me so far but now how do I change the clutch
Remove the pressure plate and clutch then reassemble using the new parts.
Hey Jon, Im planning to drop a b16 trans from an ef. When the entire engine tilts down on the driver side hasport mount, when does it stop? Does the crankshaft pulley contact the frame? I barely have any clearance with my alternator pulley. Could you support the engine side with a second floor jack instead? Thanks! Awesome video
Yes and yes. You'll need to remove the pass side radius rod to get the transmission out.
great info, well shot and just an awesome watch! did you learn on your own, or go to school for working on cars?
Thanks man, all learned with trial and error, and believe me, there has been a ton of error over the years!! Lol
I love these videos totally helpful. Ps my civic is also fishbowl lol
Lol, cool man!
@@GarageBuiltHondas late to see your videos but recently got a 90 honda civic wagon and today I'm having a problem where its leaking water down on the driverside floor and landing near the clutch what could it be?
Heater core is probably damaged.
@@GarageBuiltHondas okay thank you appreciate it
Shoes are killer!
Lol, thanks! 😁
Great vid man! I wish you were neighbor haha
Right, I'd have some company to help me out!
Dude, make sure you can POSSIBLY make a video of how to swap automatic transmission to manual transmission. It'll help. Thanks.
If i have the opportunity I will, but I don't have any vehicles of my own that need it or any work planned unfortunately.
Hey GBH, I am working on my 90 CRX DX, essentially everything done in this video. I ran into a problem at the end with the clutch fork engagement. The flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing were factory replacement items, and everything aligned and torqued to spec. But once the trans and engine are mated, I cannot move the clutch lever enough to attach the clutch cable assembly. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
I've had the issue before, sometimes it's just that way. Loosen the adjustment but on the cable all the way out and remove the bracket. Then put the cable into the lever and try to realign the bracket and bolt it down. I'm not sure why it happens, something to do with the new pressure plate and an old cable.
If that doesn't work, go buy a 90-93 Integra clutch cable. We use those on B series swaps and they are longer than the replace D series ones.
Hey man I used this walkthru to pull a 89 Si hatch transmission from the junkyard and it was so easy, thanks for all the great info. One question I have for you is, when you replace the clutch on a Dx engine (d15b2) do you use a clutch kit for that engine or do I get one for the 89 Si(d16a6)? I’m trying to replace the clutch at the same time as transmission, thanks.
You need the clutch specific for the transmission.
Garage Built Hondas okay got it, but if the 89 transmission is going into a 91 hatch dx... should I get a 91 clutch kit and flywheel and not the 89 clutch kit and flywheel? Thanks for the help
No, get the 89. But honestly if I remember correctly the 89-91 all use the same kit. Verify that when looking for one.
dude your awesome as fuck almost ready to drop the transmission by myself keep up the good work
Jose Vilchez Tear that $#it up man!! lol
have an issue removing that driveshaft pin any tip :(
For the shift linkage?
Yes sir
I’m removing my trans on a 1980 accord. I removed everything under the car already other than the axles. The engine is tilted. I don’t have time to finish this for a week or more. So basically the engine is going to stay tilted. Am I going to damage the axles? It’s a big concern because it’s impossible to get axles for a 1980 accord
If it's not a substantial tilt, you should be fine.
Hey I have the same car as you do, and I’m gonna be replacing my clutch, what other seals should I buy? Or what I should say is what seals did you replace?
Rear main seal is the most important. Everything else can be reached when the transmission is reinstalled. You can replace all 3 exterior seals on the transmission also if needed.
hey bro i just want to ask.. i have a honda hatchback 1992 DX automatic transmission when i put it in reverse sometimes it jerks really hard sometimes it does not when I press the break pretty hard. what does it mean? drives really good nothing wrong from 1-5 speed just the reverse.. hope u can help bro. checked my fluid still pink and full
It may have something to do with your reverse gear. The torque converter may also be the culprit. The torque converter wears out just like a clutch and flywheel do. Since the fluid is clean and full, I would just keep driving it unless it gets really bad.
Are your motor mounts in good shape?
Hay bro im removing the alternator from my 89 Dx 1.5. Everything is disconected I just can't figure out how to get it out.. any tips?
You can remove the driver side axle and should be able to squeeze it down through that opening. You may need to unbolt the alternator brackets also though. It's been a while since I've replaced one but that is how I pulled mine out.
I’m rebuilding my transmission next week and while I have it off I want to replace the clutch and flywheel. Which brand do you recommend ?
Exedy
hey j so the clutch cable trans mount if that's what it's even called that holds the clutch cable to the trans. do you know if auto zone sells them? if not where can I get one asap?
I don't believe any auto parts stores carry them, a junkyard would be the quickest. They may sell them brand new from HONDAPARTSUNLIMITED.COM ALSO.
You said hasport mounts right? Just curious what's the rating 75a? Is so how's the ride? Does it rattle a lot?
No rattle into, the car just feels more solid and it translates that feeling to the entire car from the engine through the mounts. It's a good thing, feels great. I've had these forever and believe they are the 62a. I'll have to pull on off again and check. The 62a is the softest, then they have 70a, and 88a which must feel super stiff.
I kind of got two questions how long do you think it took you actually to pull it out and put it back in the transmission and I have a 1990 hatch 5 speed what transmission is the SI I would need for it I mean if I wanted to put a SI transmission on it b15
It takes me about an hour to remove it, and 2-3 to re-install. Click this video for how to identify an Si transmission. ruclips.net/video/vMPjb6Ou2zg/видео.html
I don't have civic, but it's very accurate with all FWD cars
How long did the process take to remove and reinstall I am looking at a 90 model that needs a clutch just wondering a time frame to expect
Might take you a full long day especially since it sounds like you've never done one before.
Is it a must to replace the spring that goes behind the throwout bearing?
Yes. Who knows how old the other one is. It's not worth it not replacing it.
hi is it pretty much the same on a 01 accord with automatic transmission f23 engine
Yes, except the connections for the transmission will be different since yours is an auto. It will not have the shift linkage.
Whats the difference between a l3 and sl3 trans. Is it just the final drive ratio? Please correct me if im wrong
I'm not sure. You'll really need to look at the stamping on the transmission itself close to the fill hole to identify which kind of trans it is.
Jon I have a 91 Civic wagon with a stock d15b2 with a dx 5 spd transmission. I am planning on swapping the dx transmission for a si transmission. I was wondering if you could tell me the transmission identification numbers on your si transmission? Did the si transmission you installed come from a crx si?
ruclips.net/video/vMPjb6Ou2zg/видео.html at the 2:30 mark.
The trans you want from a d series is the s200xxxxxcx (might be 2000) the s400(0)xxxx is for the 96+ d series Hondas but I'm pretty sure works just as well as the s200xxxxxcx trans.
ok thank you i was gonna take my honda civic but i live in dallas
Ah, that's too bad!
hey man do you know if the sedan 198 honda civic sedan the same as this.
Juan Ttapia 1988-1991 Civic Sedan will be exactly the same process.
What kind of transmission fluid are you guys using? In the middle of replacing my clutch. Getting a lot of mixed suggestions from people
88-91 Civic/crx factory specs called for 10w-30 motor oil. You can use Honda MTF if you wish.
Can I put a 91 civic dx automatic engine in my 91 civic dx 5 speed car? But I want to keep it 5 speed and not automatic.
Yes.
I'm having trouble realigning the transmission. Any tips? Thank you
Did you get it? Not really, I'll use a floor jack to lift it then just wiggle it around trying to guide it on to the dowel pins around the engine.
I built a real simple transaxle lifter. A lot of transmissions are heavier than this one. It is worth the 2m 45s to watch. I just put it on youtube. It is completely different than other lifters.
👍😄
I just got done doing my clutch i did it exactly the same as u but my clutch doesn't disengage i tried adjusting the cable and nothing it even got stuck in gear when i tried to start it in gear with the clutch pressed in it moved a few inches and died and wouldnt come out of gear i stuck a jack under the car and jacked up on the lever for the clutch until i could shake it free it it still doesnt disengage right im about to try tightening the cable a lot more and see if that helps but other than that im lost
All brand new parts?
Garage Built Hondas i figured it out the throw out bearing popped off the spring on one side
90 CRX DX auto to manual conversion? I have trans, flywheel, clutch, mounts, pedals ect. Do i have to remove manual rack pinion unit to gets trans out the bottom?
+journeyquest1 No, you will be able to drop it just like I did in this video. You may want to remove the radius rod, the auto trans is very big and probably won't drop without removing it.
I bought the 5 speed out of a 90 CRX DX. Same yr as mine. Guy was upgrading to a B series setup and said the trans was OK. These trans are known for input shaft bearings going out. Should i change the bearing and any other known problems first? What do you do? Take a chance? Thanks. PS PM5 work with 5 speed until i do the DPFI to MPFI swap?
+journeyquest1 I would change it. It's pretty easy and since the transmission is out save yourself the time and energy of having to do it later down the line. Yes the manual pm5 will actually be need when you convert to 5spd. The auto pm5 will act weird and throw a CEL and car will not drive drive correctly.
Bro I wish you had a better camera like SweetProject so it can zoom in a you can see the actual bolts and nut and part you are removing....I still like watching your videos☺️ All my cars HONDA'S🙂
I do now. Those cideos were with my GoPro back then so the quality wasn't the best. Glad you're still checking out some of the older videos!
@GBH maybe you can help a brother out, I need a direct axle replacement for my 88 civic dx (sedan). Mixed information on the interwebs and hope to have luck with your experience in Honda’s. Appreciate any help from anyone who’s able to help. Thanks!
Run to your nearest auto parts store and tell them you car specs. They'll get you the right ones.
My car has these big black spinny things that look like rubber how do i remove those?
Where?
👍 just threw some OEM ITR suspension on my 2k DB8
Very nice, the ITR wheels also?
+J Wid Films , no. OEM LS mesh. Not too fond of GSR blades or many aftermarket wheel.
Aw got it. You didn't do the entire 5 lug suspension setup?
When you were lowering the transmission, what is that dripping?
Transmission fluid
you should do a video on how you painted your wheels
These came in matte bronze, I haven't painted them. I've done others before though!
is this the same for 88-91 civic hatch/crx?
Exactly
nice technique. lucky my cb7 doesnt have that kind of space. it has to get in and out with a bit of a twist past the subframe. a huge pain in the butt.
Sounds awful, I've never had a chance to work on the 90-93 accord but would love to own one!!
+J Wid Films I love mine, im just frustrated with it because shortly after buying it all the "just done" shit wasnt done at all and ive slowly replaced half the car... but the 90-93s just have such a great feel to them all around and a huge compatible parts list. Couldnt see myself going back to a civic unless it was one of these wagovans with a nice engine swap.
"Just done" shit is never what it seems. I know that all too well dealing with this old ass cars.
I love those accord wagons, those are sick!!
And thanks a lot bro
You're welcome!
My problem is the clutch release fork is not moving (honda civic dx 1997, with 280,000 miles on it). I don't wanna go that far. Please advise me. It will be appreciated.
What have you changed or diagnosed?
@@GarageBuiltHondas I changed the clutch fluid then I notice the pressure has become tight or there is pressure then the piston is dislocated and clutch oil all over the floor. The fork is so hard to move.
Possible bad slave or master cylinder.
I have a 1988 honda civic wagon would everything be the same? Also what and where is your bestfriend or go to store for parts
Yes. I search around extensively for best prices.
Wnere do you go for car parts?
Google first specific parts, then I'll look at different websites.
I changed my clutch out and replaced my cv axle seals but are now leaking . did I push them to far in or leave them sticking out to much?
+xVELAZQUEZx209x They should be right in the middle, more than likely pushed them in too far.
Garage Built Hondas thanks! I'm gonna have to check it out

So I need some help clearing some stuff up I’m going b18 in a 1990 civic wagon and I’m not sure if I need to change my spindles?
No
Garage Built Hondas I will be using 90-93 Axels that will work right? I forgot to mention that
Yes
Hey bro i just replaced my clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. So when i put it into 1st gear it doesnt work it stalls out the motor. When i put it in neutral the tires spin. When i put it in reverse, it also stalls out. What could it be bro. I put it all back the way it came out!
What in the world. This is baffling to me. I've never encountered an experience like that. We're all the parts new?
@@GarageBuiltHondas ya bro the trans locked up! I just put my 4 speed in there and it runs perfect now! Great video bro!!!
That's too bad, at least you got it done
I recently replaced my clutch assembly on my 90 crx and I noticed that it’s VERY easy to depress the clutch pedal. Any thoughts on what this might be? Any help is appreciated.
Is it driving fine?
Garage Built Hondas I figured it out, there was just way too much slack in the cable and the fork had a lot of play before the clutch engaged. I haven’t had a chance to drive it yet though because I have coolant in my oil 😂😂 still got a lot to sort out with this project but I really appreciate the reply!
Excellent, always love an easy fix!!

Hey john just replaced a clutch on my 89 civic hatch and double checked that everything was installed properly along the way. Everything went together just fine but now my car wont go into gear when it's on. My clutch pedal feels fine and if tightened the cable as far as it can go and it still wont go into gear. Lol, I'm sure they would, but luckily I own my home! My driveway gets messy all the time. I'll clean it when I haven't worked on anything for a while. But cleaning it is no fun!
You have to remove the axels from both sides or only the transmission side?
Both. Driver side goes into the transmissions also
@@GarageBuiltHondas thank you for your videos bro. Really appreciate it
Do you ALWAYS need to resurface the flywheel when you replace a clutch?
Yes. You may have an uneven and irregular surface from the flywheel mating to a brand new perfectly surfaced clutch disc. I never resurface, I always buy brand new. Flywheels are only about $50-60.
@@GarageBuiltHondas Thank you
I watched this for the fifth time, dunno if I will work on my Civic DX 97.
It's worth the experience alone!
is this the same process for a b20b?
Yes, pretty much identical!
what happened to the last transmission!
It was leaking from somewhere. I haven't taken a look at it or cleaned it. I think it had been that way for a while and since it was low on fluid it damaged either a syncho or 5th gear because it would get stuck in 5th gear if you didn't pull it out before letting off the gas.
How do you adjust the clutch cable im having trouble?
Right above the transmission you'll see a bracket where the cable feeds through. There will be a plastic nut that you can tighten or loosen.
Jon Widmer I adjusted it already and I have a problem I can't put it in gear when the engine is running only when it's off. I'm doin an auto to manual swap, do you what can it be. I put a brand new clutch.
Jonathan alva when I put a new (cable) clutch on my 91 hatch, I had to back the adjuster almost all the way out to be able to shift, and I had full clutch travel with my heel on the floor!
what number socets did you use??
10, 12, 14, 17 some six and some twelve point.
Man it's so easy to pull this Trans.
👍
How much do si transmission go for?
$50-200
is it pretty much the same process for an automatic transmission?
Yes. You will have a few different wires on top of the transmission for the auto lock solenoids to disconnect. No shift linkage but cables to the shifter selector inside the cabin. The torque converter has the 10mm bolts that you'll need to remove after you remove the flywheel cover next to the oil pan.
+J Wid Films thank you!
What year & mileages on Civic?
91, 370k.
dope.
👍🏻
u make that look easy.
Honda civic hatchback kidd lol, ready to do it yourself?
Lol I wish but I'm trying to do research so I can start...
Sorry to bug you even more John, been trying to cross referance the shifter selector seals between the B-D series transmissions, they do look the same from what I can see but the D16A1 engine and CG trans that goes with it are such an oddball engine and tranny that it would be just my luck that the shifter selector seals are different from the B-series. Been trying to look for that part number on Acura and Honda sites but i cant find the diagram that shows the shifter selector seal with the part number. Thanks again, john. Sorry to bug you.
Look on the Honda Sites under the parts list and check "MT Clutch Housing" and all the related MT which stand for Manual Transmission. It's in there.
I know this video is stupid old. But I have to keep asking around. Just did a clutch on one of these and now I have no clutch pedal. Clutch isn’t disengaging whatsoever. No resistance even at the arm on the side of the trans case(not a cable issue). Disk is 100% installed properly. Pressure plate torqued to 19ft/lbs. everything from flywheels to TOB replaced.
Clutch cable is fine?
By moving the clutch arm on the side of the case independently, it eliminates the clutch cable from the equation entirely. I have a new cable, but there’s no resistance even just grabbing the arm to try to manually disengage the clutch.
Wow. So you can pull the clutch release arm up with your bare hand and there isn't one bit of resistance?
I can push it up with my pinky, it’s that easy. I don’t understand it; and can’t find any other reasonable solution other than a defective pressure plate. Time for clutch kit number 3. Only issue is that when I take measurements, they show different answers. Almost like the TOB isn’t even making it to the pressure plate.
Are you positive the bolt for the fork attached to the clutch release arm is there? Possibly stripped and broken? It happened to me and I couldn't get the car into gear any longer. ruclips.net/video/u0kajmXGK1g/видео.html
10:21 what clutch kit did u use
Some eBay kit. Clutch Max I believe it was.
