    To be clear: I did not make the video to prove one version is superior to the other in any way. I made this for a guest lecture I gave on Hong Kong cinema in order to show students that cultural context can alter the way we make/consume/judge movies.

      Thanks for making this video! It was super helpful for me as I used it as a reference in my essay for school. The essay was similar to your lecture, about how cultural context can affect different types of cinema. Without your video it would've been harder for me to prove my point, so thanks again!

      @@shaikohthe scene itself was kinda bad but Leung saved it with his eyes, his reaction is the only highlight. The music itself was a bit much and Asian films in general need to chill out with that and let the scene ride on its own weight. The Departed is also too much in it's own way with excessive cussing and immediately into the action, almost zero time to actually give the scene weight. Both scene were pretty meh and very unnatural for what they were wanting to show.

      No, Infernal Affairs is objectively better than The Departed not to mention that no remake will ever be as good as the original. Infernal Affairs has so many elements and THEMES unique to Hong Kong that make the film better and The Departed doesn't have anything unique to its city nor its country.
      Directing, pacing and that little action there is are better in Infernal Affairs. There's very little that's better in The Departed, mostly the writing but only occasionally. Both very good films in the end but Infernal Affairs is clearly superior, after all The Departed is the one who ripped off from it.

It like you know that how it is when you go into that line of work. The meaning of life them in the movie's storyline talks about happy, scary and frustration in that line of work. What happens to a person in the job and outside. When goes on too long, like 3 years another 3 years and other 3 year. The Departed just don't have that in the movie.

    It's very hard for westerners, perhaps even the people who remake Infernal Affairs into The Departure, to truly understand the Infernal Affairs. That's why all the composure and depth are nowhere to be found in The Departure. For example just take a quick look on the Cantonese title of the movie, which is nothing close to "Infernal Affairs". It's called "mou gaan dou (無間道)", which should be a term that's never heard in the west.
    "Dou" means road, "Mou Gaan" is a buddhist term which means "the endless suffering without pause", it is derived from the term 無間地獄, which is another name of Avīci Naraka - The deepest hell. At the start of the movie there is a small extract of a Buddhist quote in case anybody don't know what 無間地獄 is, then the story begins in a temple, where the characters "endless roads" started. Therefore a lot of people looking it in a wrong way when watching this movie, they think Lau won at the end. The answer is the complete opposite, he stuck in the endless hell for not dying. Clearly The Departure doesn't get any of that, and it's just a normal western criminal movie
    I'm not saying subtler means better. I have nothing against movie having characters screaming and swearing to show that they are suffering, scared, or pissed. We have those kinds of movie too, but most of them are gangster movie, which was also a big thing once upon a time. For a "profession film" like Infernal Affairs, which features police, and we expect characters to act polite and keep composure. I don't know about American Police, but Hong Kong Police in the early 2000 are professional. But for the "real gangsters" in this movie, like Hon Sam, they still act relatively subtle but they aren't as polite as Chan and Lau.

    • @Tiger66261
      @Tiger66261 5 лет назад +7

      "Therefore a lot of people looking it in a wrong way when watching this movie, they think Lau won at the end."
      I guarantee you, as someone who watched Infernal Affairs without knowing the nuances behind the original title, that it's very obvious Lau didn't win in the end. The final shot of him saluting at the funeral shows a man deeply remorseful and wishing he he took a different path in life. The movie makes it incredibly obvious that Lau is forever tainted.
      Infernal Affairs is a great film, probably better than Departed, but that doesn't mean it's suddenly a difficult to understand film or that the Departed loses all nuance and subtly.

    • @kavanchan9026
      @kavanchan9026 3 года назад +6

      Yeah Lau clearly lost in the end. His final line “I do” was far more meaningful than Matt Damon being shot in the head by Wahlberg. But then again we do have to consider the cultural differences across both films.

    I prefer the way the body crashes on the taxi in IA. Shock. Then the melodrama, which by modern standards may seem "cheesy" but during production in 2001, it was all the rage: Gladiator, LOTR.. all had their slow-motion, female vocal death scene.
    Why show the Martin Sheen falling through the air for 2 seconds - I don't think it adds anything - and reduced the shock value. I also felt the tone in The Departed was all over the place, I wasn't sure whether it was supposed to be serious or funny.

    The Departed is far more realistic but IA emphasises the trauma of that moment. The Departed shows how Leo's character has to immediately supress any emotion to try and convince the other criminals that he made a mistake and is trustworthy. More focused on the dynamics and duality of the job than Internal Affairs, which is more focused on character depth.

    I'm on two minds of this. On one hand, I like how in Infernal Affairs, Wong's death just comes out of the blue with no build up or anticipation whatsoever. In The Departed, the way they showed Costello's guys pushing Queenan around right before Billy leaves the building makes his eventual demise somewhat expected. It doesn't help that they had a shot of him falling right before he hits the ground. So in terms of shock and surprise for the audience, Infernal Affairs wins. But on the other hand, the slow motion montage following Wong's death is somewhat cheesy. I don't really mind the music, but the black and white clips of the two men during their "good times" does feel a bit soap opera-ish. The aftermath of Queenan's death in The Departed was cold and unfeeling, just like how Billy has to appear in order to maintain his identity of being just another one of Costello's goons. So tough choice, but overall, I think I'll go with Infernal Affairs on this simply for the mere shock factor of it all.

    Infernal Affairs just nails that Hong Kong flick “good guy yay, bad guy boo.” Simplicity and then throws it into carnage like a Greek tragedy. The Departed is so much more unhinged with a lot more layering in characters, and a lot more gore, profanity and violence. It feels more like King Lear with dramatic moments and terrible deaths. So yeah, same story but execution is apples and oranges for me.

    I’ve never watched Internal Affairs, but based off this scene. I think I prefer The Departed. It’s more gritty and realistic as opposed to the more cinematic feel of IA. I like how in Departed he doesn’t really have time to take in his death, there’s a mix of sadness, confusion and anger, but he has to quickly move on. I definitely have to watch IA, maybe once I see the whole movie I’ll like it more.

    I personally prefer infernal affairs over the departed. The departed was just the typical Hollywood crap. Sex.. A lot of cussing, and violence. While Infernal affairs for me was more relatable, dark, has a mysterious vibe to it that keeps you guessing/wondering/interested, more emotional, overall more realistic, better scenes, storyline, and better characters/relationships, and overall was beautifully well done. Part 2, and 3 only compliments part 1. Just amazing overall. However, the departed was good, but it was just too Hollywood for me. And for whomever, im an American, born and raised in the states, just incase some ignorant fool thinks im favoring infernal affairs only because I must be a Chinese, or Asian. However, that could be reversed as well, but just saying.

    • @Tiger66261

      I don't think it's fair to reduce The Departed to just sex, cussing and violence. There's one short sex scene, and the cussing and violence helps portray the raw, "salt of the earth" world of Boston and the American Irish. I think Infernal Affairs is better, but The Departed was made with respect, care and attention to detail too, even if it had flaws (mainly a silly triangle romance).

      @@Tiger66261 that triangle romance was the only thing about the movie that I absolutely hated. Also the Billy-Queenan relationship was in my opinion a bit too shallow but then again I don't mind that too much. At least Billy didn't stand there in slow motion for 30 seconds with soprano women singing in the background when Queenan died. I mean seriously, I grew up watching Asian and in particular Indian films and while I must tell you some of them are of far superior quality than that of some of the shit Hollywood has produced in the recent years, I still prefer Scorsese's style of filmmaking. Raw, vulgar, no bullshit accurate portrayal of the society we live in with apt dialogues and reducing all that to just sex, cussing and violence sounds like something straight out of a middle-schooler's diary. People react to things in real life, people cry, people scream, people squeal, people beg. In no way was The Departed Scorsese's best work, I wouldn't even put it in his top 5. But it is definitely better than a film that uses slow mo soprano singing flashback sequences to seem sophisticated and 'mature'.

Leo does very few movies too, he only has to do the ones he really wants to and everybody has him as their first pick for roles. But then I ALSO see many people who think he's not a very good actor at all, not only overated but just not very good, some say he can only play characters who are angry or crazy basically. When there are two polar opposite opinions like this it makes me doubt my own opinion. Is he a good actor or not?

It had none of the emotional weight it had in IA - I felt the surprise, the grief, the numbness, the feeling like you're a goner, your entire life is lost even though you are actually managing to survive physically. I much more preferred it to be shown from the subjective point of view. I don't dig the cheesiness - I think those flashbacks are awful - but it was kind of an aesthetic choice, popular at that time, I suppose. So I simply ignore it and focus on Tony's performance in that very scene which was superb

    Anyway, I prefer IA not because it is original but I like how it is fast paced without dragging but same point made.
    In this scene, I dont think it is overly melo. In the original film, Wong and Chan has been working together for 10years and lets not forget from the day Chan was interviewed, Wong was already very impressed with him, and there are more scenes that show how Wong cares for Chan. You can say he is basically Chan‘s only hope. Idk I like the way they filmed this scene in HK version but I prefer Leo‘s acting in the same scene LOL

And finally Ryan Reynolds Deadpool is actively undermining even the shallow kind of cliche emotions by undercutting every serious line with a self referencial joke. idk, maybe nine eleven numbed the u.s. privileged hollywood culture so much, it has forgotten how emotions even work.

      Ignorant and wrong. You clearly don't understand the theme of the movie and its type. Sure this is a crime movie (anyway why can't a crime movie be emotional), but is not Jackie Chan type movie with excellent fighting scene or the Johnnie To type. Infernal affairs was never an action or realistic movie. The theme is about people struggling in eternal hell. The disappointment and the sense of powerlessness
      in lives. That's why the movie name is infernal affair. The chinese movie title is actually a buddhist word 無間道, which meant eternal hell. So actually, it is more a religious film than a crime film. The film itself is meant to be emotional. That's why in infernal affairs, there is nearly no action and fighting scene, cause it is not what the movie is about. You can also see this message in the ending of the infernal affairs. Lau survived while Chan died a hero. Chan escaped the eternal hell while Lau have to bear his sin and guilt and lives. You pick the wrong movie if you don't wanna be emotional.

    Infernal Affairs is way better than the Departed and its not even close. Especially if you watched Infernal Affairs before you watched The Departed. The Departed was miscasted. Several of the actors didn't fit the movie. Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Antony Tsang and the other Hong Kong actors also acted way better than the American actors. Some of the American actors acting were very exaggerated and didn't come off as natural. Hong Kong actors like Tony Leung are much more subtle and can communicate emotions just with their eyes instead of being so animated. Also Hong Kong movies are better than American movies in general given that they don't follow the stereotypically American script that is the exact same script for dang near every movie. American movies, at the beginning of the movie, you already know the end of it. The good guy is going to win, he's going to get the girl at the end and exchange a kiss and then everyone lives happily ever after. Hong Kong movies, will straight up kill the main character of the movie and wont give a dam* lol. And the bad guys actually win in many of the movies. The Infernal Affairs is a masterpiece in suspense, character development, plot twist and great acting by everyone involved.
