Infernal Affairs (2002) vs The Departed (2006)

  • Open on - the underbelly of a seedy city entwined with organized crime. The police force’s desperate continued attempts to root it out. On one side, a mole in the police force, foiling their plans at every turn, struggling with his own identity and morality. On the other, an undercover cop who sacrifices everything to bring down the mob. The two play a deadly game of cat and mouse that binds them together. This setup serves as the premise for both INFERNAL AFFAIRS and its Hollywood remake, THE DEPARTED (or if you’re from Beantown - The Depahted), and while the two films share an identical story outline, the execution of each is vastly different!
INFERNAL AFFAIRS is 2002 Hong Kong action-thriller, starring Andy Lau and Tony Leung, co-directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak. In the film, two deep cover operations are hatching around the same time with Lau Kin-ming, a young gangster who is sent to the police academy by his triad boss Hon Sam, and at the other end of the spectrum, Superintendent Wong Chi-shing, has expelled Chan Wing-yan, a young police cadet, from the very same police academy. Fast forward 10 years later, Lau has risen through the ranks and is now working under the superintendent to bring down Hon Sam, and Chan is a trusted soldier embedded within Hon Sam’s crew.
THE DEPARTED is a 2006 American remake starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon with the legendary Martin Scorsese in the director’s chair. In this re-telling, Hong Kong is replaced with Boston and the triad is swapped out with the Irish mafia. Damon plays Colin Sullivan who becomes a mole in the police force for mob boss Frank Costello and DiCaprio plays Billy Costigan Jr, the honest cop who goes undercover in Costello’s infamous crew. The film has multiple scenes that are replicated beat for beat, including Sullivan tailing Costigan, and the pair’s final rooftop confrontation.
That being said, there are also many changes THE DEPARTED makes from its source material including a love triangle and a different ending! So which iteration of the story comes out on top? Will it be INFERNAL AFFAIRS with its frenetic energy and tight pacing or THE DEPARTED with its more expansive scope and trademark style of an acclaimed director at the height of his powers? Much like the dual protagonists of the films, to find out we must... FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Paul Cooper, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Stephen White. Let us know in the comments which film you prefer - Infernal Affairs or The Departed!

'The Departed' is one of the very few remakes that I approve. 'Infernal Affairs' is very slightly more stylish. 'The Departed' expanded the father-figure role of the mob boss. It's very difficult to choose which one is better. They are both excellent films. I prefer 'Infernal Affairs'. Just.

this comparison doesn't have the sequel included. The sequel expanded the father-figure mob boss with Francis Ng. As the central character. Ngai Wing Hau had to take up the role of the patriarch because his dad, Ngai Kun, died. Chan is Ngai Wing Hau's half brother and he tried to recruit him but he refused because Chan wants to become a cop, therefore making him someone who never did anything wrong, but forced to stay in his role, undercover, in the gang. Btw, Francis Ng dies and Eric Tsang watched in 1997 the handover ceremony as he became the boss and the changing of times became an identity crisis for any Hong Konger's destiny 😢

Actually, the ending of infernal affairs has many meanings, Andy Lau here is a complicated vilain, throughout the movie he is conflicted with himself, he's indeed a vilain but he has remorse, which makes him more human and "likeable"

I will point out that the third and final movie in the Infernal Affairs series has Lau get shot in the final confrontation when he’s finally exposed. Though he doesn’t die, he is paralyzed and rendered unable to speak, and the final shot is of him tapping out the word “HELL” in Morse code as he sits in a wheelchair in the middle of a field.

I thing Infernal Affairs 2002 is better...all around better. Watching The Departed I am watching acting. Watching IA 2002, I forget at times that I am watching acting.
And this is not bias because I am Chinese.
The Departed seems as though it tries to be redemptive, as all the bad stuff is happening. Therefore, silly lines, exaggerated facial expressions and speech tones, unnecessary scenes such as the "love interests" conducting their affairs are written in...this is not a romance film, unless it is for comic relief.

They are both good movies with great acting and directing. If I had to choose one, I would still choose IA because it was original, the characters were well developed and the focus was less on the violence (even though violence is present). The iconic scene when Andy Lau's Character points the gun at Tony Leung's character on top of a building with the city in the background is also memorable. In general the City of Hong Kong features more with its streets and character than Scorcese's version. It just adds more to the texture of the movie and fixes it in both time and place to make it more unique and watch-worthy (is that a word?).

Departed is a good movie, but it doesn't really improve anything after all. While the acting performances are not bad, none of the actore came close the his/her best performances. I really like Nicholson, but I think this time his overacting was outright anoying. DiCaprio was the only one I would say delivered an outstanding performance. The acting in IA was very natural and believable (escpecially for a HK movie) to the smallest supporting character. The story changes are not for the good either. While I can see what they were going for with the love triangle, and I think it's an interesting change, I still like the original version better. Yes, the love stories get more attention and depth, but that doesn't change anything regarding the tragic of both main characters. I general I'm not very fond of the fact that in the American version people tends more towards either good or bad. Adding Wahlbergs character just to get a more Hollywood-streamlined ending is by far the worst single change. Not only was his acting performance one of the worst in his carreer. In the original there is a good and and an evil side of the story, but many characters are neither absolutly evil nor good, especially the main characters. This is the biggest point of the whole movie and the remake just trashes that. At least they killed DeCaprio - I was actually surprised because I was not expecting that.
To me Remakes make sense when they improve upon the original. Carpenters "The Thing" is a great example. But Departed doesn't really achive in this regard.
    My ratings...
    Infernal Affairs: 9/10
    The Departed: 7/10

When it comes to which one is better Infernal Affairs takes all the credit cause they made all the work mostly. I really like The Departed though. Love Nicholson there. Di Caprio is not fit for the role. Too soft. Although he s a great actor he was wrong cast. Someone like Tom Hardy would be a much better fit. And i prefer Infernal affairs s ending by far.
