This is a movie recap of the movie the departed. The departed ending explained. Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Matt Damon and Leonardo Dicaprio.
“When I was your age, they would say we could become cops or criminals. Today what I'm saying to you is this: When you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?” This quote is so foreboding and really just sets the theme for the entire film. I think the point is that everyone in the movie is a criminal. Some are glorified criminals (the cops) and some are just real criminals
He probably would've done it under a different name.....besides Frank had an in with the police anyway, so i think it would be possible to do it without them knowing.
Sullivan was the one in charge of running those background checks. That itself however doesn't make sense either...rookie detective in SIU put in charge of finding the mole inside SIU. What could go wrong?
Delahunt did not say “don’t worry I didn’t tell anybody” he said “Tell me why I didn’t say anything, tell me why” and then he died. So much more ambiguous.
Yea if you really paid attention the guy dying on the couch who gave Billy the address was also an undercover cop, look at thr scene on their initial encounter when Billy broke his nose and what they said about it in the office
There’s also the scene where Matt Damon is searching up the social security numbers and Delahunt’s comes up negative which was another hint that he was undercover
Hm...he somehow knew what Anthony Anderson's character was up to and followed him? That's all I can think of. You are right though, it doesn't make sense, way too convenient.
If I’m remembering the original Infernal Affairs film this would be correct. I could be mistaken but I believe Infernal Affairs 2 answers this those 2 side characters are playing analogous roles to the Costigan and Sullivan characters during the same time period as part 1. I remember thinking it was really clever at the time. And when I saw the departed was wondering if they had filmed a part 2 so the two endings we collide like they did in the original versions
At the end of the movie there are so many things happening in rapid succession so that I didn't understand everything, honestly. Thanks for explaining.
I love that Martin Sheen has this obsession with Notre Dame. In the West Wing his character Jed Bartlett went to Notre Dame. He requested to have that backstory when he agreed to play the role of President Bartlett. In this movie when he is on the roof and they ask him "Where is your boy? Meaning informant. He says "He's studying law at Notre Dame."
I think the Departed didn’t really capture the original theme of the Internal Affair. In the original, Matt Damon didn’t die; the movie stopped at the elevator scene because idea is that Matt Damon would never know how many other moles are in the police force. The original Chinese movie title was based on a Buddhist idea of never ending hell. If Matt Damon didn’t die it would echo the never ending “hell” of constantly lookin over his shoulder of afraid being expose at any time because he wouldn’t know if there’s any other moles out there.
It was probably all about how Costigan was an undercover and Sullivan was a rat. Just a guess though. Because throughout the whole film nobody besides Queenan and Digman knew Costigan was a cop.
Yea but the tape she listens so was acatually suppoosed to be sent to Sullivan, she just sees costigans name and chooses to open it. I suppose it is pretty safe to assume that that is also what he gave to her, but we don’t technically know.
I never understood why frank needed to be an fbi informant. Also why didn’t billy just tell dignam that Colin was the rat in person, what’s with all the meet me on the rooftop theatrics with Colin? Also how did Colin explain what happened in the abandoned building at the end to the police?
Because in the eyes of society he is still a low ranking mobster. Only two people knew about his undercover assignment in the mob, one is dead and the other suspended. And the file that proves this operation and can restore his identity has been deleted by Sullivan. Billy is a good person pretending to be an evil mobster to take down a mob boss, while Sullivan is a criminal pretending to be an outstanding detective. Yet Billy suffers constant moral dilemmas and is properly paranoid while Sullivan reaps the rewards of his lies and manipulation. To recover his identity and have a chance of a normal live instead of running away to be a criminal for ever, Billy has to unmask Sullivan and show the world that he was the rat all along, yet he is killed by the replacement rat just as he was about to succeed. That is the tragedy of his character, doing the right thing is dangerous in a cruel and unjust world where liers and deceiver like Sullivan get on top.
Costello is based of Whitey Bulger, former leader of the South Boston Winter Hill mob. #2 most wanted by the FBI in the 80’s only behind Osama Bin Ladin, but he was actually an FBI informant
I love this film, Scorcese's finest just behind Goodfellas, however all the reviews and breakdowns don't give enough credit or sometimes even mention it is a American remake of 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs
@MrIlleism the phrase “Based on the motion picture Infernal Affairs” is buried among the credits of the film, while Felix Chong who Wrote and Directed has a writing credit on IMDB page of The Departed.
A lot of things don't really add up about the plot. Costello's crew was pretty small and Billy was the new guy. How could Costello not figure out it was Billy? And why does the rookie detective (Sullivan) get assigned the task of finding the mole with zero suspicion about him being the mole himself? The only thing worse than not discovering the mole is the mole having the power to run the investigation himself and find his counterpart in Costello's crew! The script makes Billy and Sullivan out to be geniuses while SIU and Costello are oblivious morons. Some of that could be believable but not to the extent shown in the film imo. Also, how is Queenan the police chief running around to abandoned buildings to meet Billy unarmed?!
Nice video. Thanks. Still have a few questions: 1. What was in it for Matt Damon’s character? He was doing well enough by himself. Did he really gain anything from the connection with Jack Nicholson’s character? 2. Given the FBI connection, was Nicholson allowed to do anything he liked? Didn’t the FBI feel any worries about letting a successful crime boss get away with all those killings?
Thanks appreciate it! 1. Frank was more like a father to Matt Damon's character, brought in as a kid. I think it was more about loyalty for him. 2. I think only 1 or 2 of them knew Frank as an informant. Showing the corruption all around.
Here's an answer to number two, it's the government man they don't give a flying fu¢k about anyone. Mean hell I would imagine 85% of politicians are criminals, a lot of them get into government poor ish but retire very rich!
I don't get why jack nicholson would cooperate with the FBI for wut reason?, he's literally the boss usually its the other way around where the soldiers are informants for the police and they rat on the bosses
Whitey bulger was an fbi informant as he was fighting a rival Italian gang in Boston. The fbi agreed to turn a blind eye to bulgers Irish gangs illegal activities.
It’s not that hard to figure out. The boss in this instance has plenty of dirt on him that the fbi Likley used to get Costello to become an informant which is also exactly what happened to whitey bulger in real life, which this film is loosely based on.
@@209Stretch still dont get it. Why would the boss himself be the informant? Or was it a cycle, give up a few operations / deals to stay in business with the fbi?
So Billy had the tapes sent to Mark Wahlberg. That’s makes sense now. They didn’t explained that, so they left that to the audience to figge out? Also should they have had someone from the FBI more involved?
I actually have a different theory, Do you remember when Billy gave Madelyn’s the letter and he said that if anything ever happy to him that she would open it. Well as soon as he died, she was forced to open the letter and it said to give him dingham the tapes and or other information because dingham is the only one that know he was a cop.

Fantastic Movie Legendary Performances Especially Leonardo DiCaprio And Jack Nicholson, The Movie Is Tragic in A Sense And The Ending Is Heartbreaking 😢❣️💯
This didn't do a great job of explaining a lot of parts in the film because of over the top simplified parts in it here. The girlfriend didn't know there was a situation with a mole existing at all before hearing the tape to begin with, so you can't say she found out who "the" mole is and end it with that. I don't understand how Sullivan wouldn't know that Dignam is going to come back for him, since Billy vocally asked the black dude where Dignam is, so it should be assumed that he knows He surely wouldn't have thought that Dignam would kill him but i don't understand how is it not obvious that he would know that he is a mole by then . Billy could've lived when he saw the letter with his handwriting if he just took it and started shouting around the department to point out who the mole is. Eventually if he didn't get killed, Dignam would confirm that he is an undercover cop and he would've lived with just a bit more patience. I got pretty annoyed at that since he could've lived through it and the movie would've ended with a justful ending. Basically nobody won and it showed that snitches always end up in ditches. Not one snitch survived hahah
The main problem is that Billy trusted the only 2 guys who knew he was a cop. One was dead, and the other was fired and since he was deep undercover it’d make sense why he didn’t have his personal info. Nobody else would believe Billy because he’s spent years as a criminal while Sullivan was an outstanding officer.
This wasn’t an explanation/breakdown this was just basically saying what happened in the movie. An explanation is an analytical breakdown this is just telling the plot.
wow thank you for this! I have wanted to watch the DVD I have for a couple of years. Finally sat down and watched it and halfway through as Colin's girlfriend is moving in the dvd has a glitch and will not play. This helped explain all that went on. All great performances.
Iv'e watched this film 3 times and it just makes no sense. Scorsese tried to over complicate things and in return just makes for a confusing film. One of the biggest things is that nobody in the department could figure out the mole was Matt Damon. It is just so blatantly obvious. Mark Walbergs character should have picked up on this alot earlier in the film. The biggest dissapointment is the end result when Whalberg kills Damon. You would think to get true justice he would have arrested him and let him live out his last days in prison, or at least shot him in the stomach and made kim suffer.
Mark Wahlberg's character, Sgt. Sean Dignam, shoots Colin Sullivan, played by Matt Damon, at the end of the film. The reason for this action is that Dignam discovers Sullivan's true identity as a mole within the police force, working as an informant for Frank Costello. By shooting Sullivan, Dignam is taking swift and decisive action to eliminate the threat that Sullivan poses to the police and their ongoing investigation. Given the deeply rooted corruption within the department, Dignam likely believes that arresting Sullivan would not result in justice being served. Instead, he chooses to take matters into his own hands and execute Sullivan as a form of vigilante justice. Dignam's decision to shoot Sullivan can be seen as a reflection of his disillusionment with the system and his desire to rid the police force of corrupt individuals. It showcases the morally ambiguous and complex nature of the characters in the movie.
Why didn't dignam use the evidence to arrest Colin instead of killing him. I know he got his partner killed but surely that would've been more rewarding than just killing him?
Good question! I think it was just for dramatic effect...a sort of, everyone dies in the end type thing to show how brutal this whole scenario was for everyone involved.
i did not like a few things with this movie. how is a police capt that dumb, and cant notice if he is followed, and would think its crazy if he was. how is costigan jr. smarter then almost every other detective, he didnt even get thru training. Scorse misleads us as costigan jr calls capt to set up the rat in the dept. soon after this scene there is a fade out with a black hole that slowly engulfs mat Damon. which leads us, the audience to believe they have come up with a plan, off screen to deal with the rat. every1 was in on the set-up, mark Wahlberg, capt, costigan jr. everybody. but after this scene, the capt gets killed, because he can't notice a tail! i love this director, but that was a cheap way to fake out the audience . i studied cinema, so i know those shots have meaning fades match-on action shots, but here it was worthless pointless, and gave a false narrative to the entire film from that poin. how evey1 did not realize MATT DAMON WAS THE RAT, IN A SQUAD OF DETECTIVES IS THE DUMBEST THING. the Wahlberg character knew from the start. or close to it. Capt. MCQuenan was by far the least knowledgeable cop. his stupidity caused his demise
It never explicitly tells you but I believe it can just be assumed it was evidence against Colin, which made its way to Dignam, Leos character does reference he has evidence, tapes, etc. while on the rooftop confronting Colin. I assumed he was reffering to the envelope when he mentions that.
So about this recording of Sullivan talking to Frank which Billy sends to Sullivan: Where did Billy get the tape from? Is that ever made clear? Because unless I missed something this recording seems to come out of nowhere and again I don't see where Billy got it from. Was the tape just lying around someplace and Billy stumbled on it or have I forgotten one of the scenes?
Remember frank was an fbi informant. Just so happens he trusted Billy . Upon his death Franks lawyer sent it to him. Billy told this to Sullivan to get him to the roof
Yes, Billy got it from Frank’s lawyer. There’s a scene after Madeline listens to it where Billy tells Collin over the phone that Frank made recordings of all of his dealings and had his lawyer hold onto them as a form of insurance. After Frank dies, the lawyer gives them to Billy because he was the only one Frank trusted to reveal the truth.
My biggest question and the reason I looked up a explained video is the package that Billy gave to the psychiatrist lady(can’t remember her name) is never explained or touched on anymore unless I’m being an idiot
It never explicitly tells you but I believe it can just be assumed it was evidence against Colin, which made its way to Dignam, who kills Colin at the end. Leos character does reference he has evidence, tapes, etc. while on the rooftop confronting colin. I assumed he was refering to the envelope when he mentions that
It shows here immediately listening to some tapes and gets mad an the rat, so that shows he sent here evidence to prove he's innocent cuz Leo's character knew that he might end up dead and just wants to clear things up morality wise and also sent it to Walberg's character cuz he knows he'll kill since he never liked and he killed his partner,
What a dumb life to lead. totally depressed, no rewards, just problems. Movie looks like it attempted to be as smart as the Usual suspect, but failed. Star studded cast, I didn't agree that it was a great film, at all.
That's how such kind of life ends. What you expect being rat fir others party and got presidential medals. This is exactly ending i was expecting. And i am damn sure dignum will ensure that Billy will get all recognition.

With all respect this is the most dull explanation of a movie ever
Why would mark wahlber shoot Damon it seems like he’s dirty too, he could arrest him. My head hurts 😅😂

Capt. MCQuenan was by far the least knowledgeable cop. his stupidity caused his demise
Good explanation
Thank you i finally understood it
if Billy did give his bank informaiton couldn't Franks crew discover that he was getting direct deposits from the Police department
What was in the envelope that Billy gave to the doctor? The one he told her not to open unless he dies or sum? And she gave it to dignham right?
@@chrisnaiellowhy was madeleine angry over the tapes though? It was basically just police business
@@knownpleasuresSullivan is cooperating w a mob boss who kills people while also tooting his own horn for being a really good liar
I assumed he was refering to the envelope when he mentions that
It shows here immediately listening to some tapes and gets mad an the rat, so that shows he sent here evidence to prove he's innocent cuz Leo's character knew that he might end up dead and just wants to clear things up morality wise and also sent it to Walberg's character cuz he knows he'll kill since he never liked and he killed his partner,
this movie is great and goes to show you even a decade later they can still be analized and what was this really trying to say
The therapist was a horndog
What’s the song playing in the background?
Reminds me of deathnote a lil
How did Sullivan find out that Frank was an FBI informant?
It was written in the notebook that Queenan left.
What a dumb life to lead. totally depressed, no rewards, just problems. Movie looks like it attempted to be as smart as the Usual suspect, but failed. Star studded cast, I didn't agree that it was a great film, at all.

Such a dumb ending on this film
@Animal Advocate yes, I think it was a good ending, the one loose end came back to bite him in the ass
Really just sad ending
That's how such kind of life ends. What you expect being rat fir others party and got presidential medals. This is exactly ending i was expecting. And i am damn sure dignum will ensure that Billy will get all recognition.
Unspecified amount of time. Not an unspacific amount of time.

Incorrect … dignam was a rat … you can see he worry’s when William mentions that there might be a rat in the department… cops don’t make Hits like that !
