    Harpo is the greatest mime actor of all time, Chico was the lovable hustler, and Groucho was quickest wit ever on the silver screen. When they where all on screen together it was hilarious mayhem.

    In his pre-Marx Brothers days, Chico (then known as Leonard) would hire himself out as a pianist to bars, bordellos and what ever. Sometimes he would book himself into two places on the same night. When that happened, he would send his younger brother Harpo (then known as Adolph or Arthur) to take his place. The two resembled each other enough so that no one knew the difference.

      Harpo is only mute in the movies; in real life he spoke with a soft Brooklyn accent apparently. This would have been when they were growing up, but if you ever see the Marx Brothers without their costumes they looked very similar to each other which is why they were able to do the mirror scene in Duck Soup so well.

    Does anyone even have the talent to do something like this in a movie today? I'll take this over all the CGI explosions and parkour chase scenes and fart jokes and side boobs in all other movies put together.

    • @toeg1
      @toeg1  7 лет назад +4

      Indeed. It does seem that humor has taken a nose dive since they performed above, but slapstick existed back then as well. The Three Stooges are perhaps one of the better known groups of that type.

    Chico and Harpo probably did prerecord this routine, so that is almost certainly them playing what you hear - but they're syncing to that recording, not playing live for the camera (any experienced pianist can tell you that by watching their hands). That would allow them to act instead of worrying whether they got the notes perfectly correct. Of course, when they toured their shows before shooting them as films, all musical routines were performed live every night. How I wish those had been filmed, when they were at the height of their virtuosity and spontaneity.

    • @buzzbang7930
      @buzzbang7930 5 лет назад

      Your absolutely right about this, It was pre-recorded and synced in after. Not unusual of course, but I have seen some of their live stuff and it's just as good and funny. Yes, it can be at times a trifle difficult to play an instrument and act out a scene at the same time. A good example is the rock band Kiss. Let me explain. Their music is pretty easy to play, and so it makes it easy for the musicians (Kiss) to act out, e.g. jump around put on a show, without making mistakes and sounding too far from the studio version of their music. A simple 1-4-5 progression and a 4/4 drum beat and you got Kiss, pretty much. This example is Kiss Alive album 1975. That music sound damn good, no noticeable mistakes and very, very close to studio version. just like they recorded it in the studio, where some other band(s) may sound far from their studio version. The fact that Gene Simmons made the music very simple and easy to play, makes it easier for the band to act out, put on a show without making mistakes and sounding too far away from the original studio recording. Kiss Alive 1975 double album. The reason I'm using Kiss Alive 1975 double album, as an example is because I never forgot over the years the fact that it sounded so close to studio with out that typical live version of music you hear from other bands, they don't sound the same or as close as their studio music. It never usually does for most bands, but Kiss did a good job of it. Other bands, btw, have music that can be more complicated to play too, thus easier to make mistakes or sound far from studio version while playing live, and if you are acting out a show. Other factors are drug use and alcohol, this can make the difference too, as I'm sure you know.

    • @sifugurusensei
      @sifugurusensei 3 года назад

      Harpo especially don't sync with the music. As a pianist, it's sorta disappointing.

    The perfect mix of innocence, playfulness, and anarchy...
    ...which is exactly how the Counterculture saw itself.

    Oldies but goodies. Some of the entertainers of yesterday have more talent than what comes out today. There are very few songs now that appeal to me and age is not the reason why as I love music and art when it has real talent behind it and the artist has put their love into it and not stage managed etc.
    Maybe some artists should look at yesteryear to see the love that the artists had yesterday. Just an observation not a critique as such.
