His famous pistol-shot technique! He learned piano from a man who only mastered one hand and taught that hand to Chico who was left to teach Arthur (Harpo) that one hand! Harpo knew two songs "Love me an the World Is Mine and Waltz Me Around Again Willie“ so he got jobs, age 12, playing piano in saloons, where they kicked him out as soon as they realized he only had two songs! But he was a genius who attracted many harpists who he hoped would teach him better technique, but they just watched him in awe and left!

Marx Brothers were true artists, not only comedians, cause they came from years and years of Vaudeville. Groucho tells in his biography how was hard to travel across America in the 10's and the 20's. From the smallest audience in lost towns, facing the early failure; to the great success of the show "i'll say she is" that brought them to Broadway. What a great compilation of some of the most enjoyable piano playing (a portion of) the world has ever seen. Cheers to the Marx Brothers for all the entertainment and laughs and their iconic breaking of many of the rules. Peace.
I would say Chico sure had his own way of playing that nobody ever to this day could copy! A pure piano GENIUS and he did it with EASE! I am blown away!
Harpo(in his bio Harpo Speaks) said Chico hated having to practice and would have preferred to be playing pinochle and gambling. Also his piano teacher didn't really know much about playing with the left hand so Chico ended up being a virtuoso with his right hand. Their early struggles are fascinating to read about.
He was not self taught. His mother wanted the boys in show biz and they could only afford lessons for Chico, being the oldest and the favourite. Chico was supposed to then teach Harpo what he learned but never did. The teacher was cheap and only knew how to play effectively with one hand so my explain Chico's odd style. Anyway, Chico HATED the lessons but mad use of them becoming a travelling musician while his brothers had theor own separate act. When their bookings accidently coincided, Chico crashed his brothers act and they decided to team up.
They really did come up in dreadful poverty; Minnie Marx was constantly on the hustle, she found Leonard (Chico) a piano teacher who was strong on the one hand (I forget which) but Chico learned one hand, Minnie had him teach Harpo who became a one-handed piano like Chico! Harpo had serious musical gifts and could play anything he got his hands one! It was said while the brothers were on the road raising hell, Minnie got a telegram from Chico and Groucho saying "Ahdie (Arthur/Harpo) wants a harp" and that is the version I hold to! Harpo fascinated legions of Harp players,
This is an excellent compilation, and it really is good quality! Thanks so much for this and for your respectful admiration of one of the world's best comedy trios. Cheers!
As a retired concert pianist I think its a shame they gave him such a crapy piano for someone of his ability, especially the first scene. Wonderful to watch him though.

Chico was amazing! He always seems overshadowed by Harpo and Groucho, because they had such strong comedic personalities, but truly, what a talent he had! His piano playing is great, both as music as well as comedy. A wonderful artist.
His daughter said that when she was a kid, her mother (Chico's first wife) waited for him to come home from work, and when she heard his footsteps, her heart was racing. How passionate her mother's love for her dad.

Sure he wrote songs but if I remember right he "Co" - created, not one song he wrote was entirely him and him only. The other three have full credit as being the ones that were the only writer.
Total, utter, inimitable talent......a lifetime of practise resulting in complete perfection!
What a great compilation of some of the most enjoyable piano playing (a portion of) the world has ever seen. Cheers to the Marx Brothers for all the entertainment and laughs and their iconic breaking of many of the rules. Peace.
You wouldn't know it by the hat; but that guy's a genius..... actually, that hat is genius...
Love the hat, it looks good on him.
I like when he uses his finger like a trigger on a gun to play the piano.Awesome!!
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
Marx Brothers, Mr Bean, Three stooges with Curly, some great talent that will crack you up!
I would say Chico sure had his own way of playing that nobody ever to this day could copy! A pure piano GENIUS and he did it with EASE! I am blown away!
I agree with you.
And he was so young ... long ago ... and very charming!
Oh, yea, it comes through even today. I feel it........
There’s nothing wrong with his left hand technique
Amazing! I was told that Chico was self taught. Hard to believe. Great upload. Thanks!
He was, as was Harpo
He pronounced the name "Chick-o"; Groucho and Harpo gave him the name because he was a babe magnet.
According to Harpo’s book, Chico was taught and he taught his brothers.
He was a musical genius.I like his style better than most concert pianist.
Was he actually playing what you hear or was it a recording of someone who played those tunes???
I just happened on to this little gem and am blowing away by this man's genius! Eat your heart out Jerry Lee Lewis!
the definition of talent
buzz kirsch
This will always put a smile on your face, no matter how down you are! It's pure entertainment!
19 minutes and 34 seconds of bliss.
Why is it every time I see "Chico" or "Harpo" play I get this huge smile?
Their best comedians and what I realized their musicians
cos they're awesome
They really did come up in dreadful poverty; Minnie Marx was constantly on the hustle, she found Leonard (Chico) a piano teacher who was strong on the one hand (I forget which) but Chico learned one hand, Minnie had him teach Harpo who became a one-handed piano like Chico! Harpo had serious musical gifts and could play anything he got his hands one! It was said while the brothers were on the road raising hell, Minnie got a telegram from Chico and Groucho saying "Ahdie (Arthur/Harpo) wants a harp" and that is the version I hold to!
Harpo fascinated legions of Harp players,
@@carolvogelman5261 i could watch em play all day!
You are not alone in this!
I don't know of anyone else that can play life this...what a gift.
Never had a piano teacher teach it that way. The skill must've died.
I love the way the ladies in the background lose it in such a nice way.
This is an excellent compilation, and it really is good quality!
Thanks so much for this and for your respectful admiration of one of the world's best comedy trios.
Cheers!
I am in "Chico Heaven" with these clips. Thank you for posting, I watch this every day..........gotta get my Chico fix.
The only other guy i can think of playing piano like this is Jerry Lee Lewis.
They both did not played the piano, they played with it.
Chico is king of the keys he is in a league of his own
Chico's piano playing makes Elton John look like an amateur 🎹🎹🎹
Elton john es un mindundi al lado de chiko....
Melissa Ann I’m not sure we will ever see another combination of just total style and awesome talent like this again.
As far as technicality Elton John IS an amateur
Melissa Ann He IS an amateur and not a good one.
There are some really good amateur pianists.
How many great songs did Chico Marx write?
Pure joy. Talent and playfulness all rolled into one.
Today's Hollywood is full of C rated talent. The Marx brothers were in a class all by themselves.
A genius with magic hands. No one will ever see his like again. Amazing chico
As a retired concert pianist I think its a shame they gave him such a crapy piano for someone of his ability, especially the first scene. Wonderful to watch him though.
I thought my hearing was off, but could they have at least tuned it!
Not many pianists are visual on the piano...but Chico was ..with humor...that busy index finger 😊
Totally unique playing style combined with unforgettable versions of everything he played. A remarkable talent.
amazing! you dont see talent like the marx brothers these days
they are truly of an era gone by 😞
I remember watching Marx Brothers movies as a kid. Happy happy happy.
Then when my daughter was 5, showing them to her, at home.
Watching her, she was in heaven....how could life be so gratifying and fun and funny and cool...
Chico could clearly play any genre, but look at his face when he plays rag time music. Obviously his favorite.
Chico was amazing! He always seems overshadowed by Harpo and Groucho, because they had such strong comedic personalities, but truly, what a talent he had! His piano playing is great, both as music as well as comedy. A wonderful artist.
And a sexy man.
Leonard Marx sure could play with the best of them. Magnificent!
I wish I had more thumbs to up.
To play piano like Chico, one needs rubber fingers.
No it all real and he very quick with his fingers
The most lovable rogue on film. I love all the Marx Brothers, but as a pianist, I can really appreciate Chico's amazing skill on the piano.
The ol' index finger "shooting the keys," as he called it.
His daughter said that when she was a kid, her mother (Chico's first wife) waited for him to come home from work, and when she heard his footsteps, her heart was racing. How passionate her mother's love for her dad.
Julie Nguyen:I wonder how Harpo & Peter Tork would have got on playing together.Peter learned to play after the hell episode of the show.He played about a dozen instruments inc keyboard.Wouldve been interesting to say the least. And with Chico of course.Brilliant musicians.
