Chico had more talent in that 1 finger than 99% of all today's artists - combined !!! Very fitting that Chicago would give the "finger" to the watered down talents of today 🎹
the song in Italy is known as "oh campagnola bella" that means oh wonderful country girl..it's an old folk song from Abruzzo (a region in the centre of Italy)
There is not now, nor has there been anyone since like the Marx brothers. They were pure comic genius'. Every single one of them was multi-talented, especially from a musical standpoint. Although they played as a team, they were superb in individual performances. Groucho got much of the publicity later in their careers, but I believe Chico and Harpo were as talented as Groucho. Look closely at some of the performances of Chico and Harpo together and you will observe genius at work. I am thankful that Irving Thalberg gave them at shot at making more movies. It was our good fortune that he did and we have the privilege of viewing the clips of three of the most talented comic/actor/musicians on the planet!
They were indeed a great gift to the entertainment business, and still bring a lot of fun to fans established and newly-acquired - thank heavens for the recording processes that have preserved their talents for us. And they came from the most humble and impoverished of backgrounds. Remarkable.
"Chico was a piano player, but Harpo was a musician", according to their children. It doesn't diminish Chico in any way. Groucho said, if Chico hadn't gone into the movies he'd likely have been a mathematician. And Harpo was simply pure love and warmth in real life as well as on stage. Zeppo was a prickly man, but another genius who wrote some of Harpo's material. Gummo had a successful career entirely apart. Genius in every aspect, especially word play on stage, coupled with pantomime.
Bahahahahaaaa, Harpo is having a fit 0:25, poor girl! Yeah, Groucho might have been the intellectual one of the brothers, but sweet Harpo and crafty Chico were not just side kicks but a superb team and VERY entertaining musicians!
Groucho was sitting on a park bench in the Central Park one day. A Catholic priest sees him and hugs him saying: "Thank you my son for bringing so much fun into this world". The ever ready and witty Groucho replied: "Thanks father for taking so much fun out of this world"!!! Which comedian today can match that? I loved the Marx Brothers mainly because they did not ridicule people or insult anyone to try to be "funny" as some bankrupt "comedians" feel they have to today.
Chicho on the piano...Harpo on the harp..or clarinet ( see Harpo blowing bubbles...on Kraft Music Hall in 1959. ) and Groucho. ....well...being himself....genius.!
Hey mister, can I play the piano ? I'll say Chico could sure the play the piano, and Harpo the harp...and in their spare time become the greatest team of comedians, ever
Managed to find someone with the Piano sheet music on Amazon. Needless to say only part of the melody bears any resemblence :-) Time to get transcribing!
Groucho said that and it could very well be true, it sort of fits Chico, but we can never really trust any the Brothers' stories, especially Groucho's, because the same story changes over and over again till you realize that maybe it never happened at all (: I love them so much (:
It bring harpo---chasing girls, offering a leg instead of a hand... He WOULD have bitten an orange! That would be easier to play piano with, too. I think my favorite Marx bros. story is the one told by Jon Adamson.."once, unable to get an appointment with the Wunderkind of MGM, the Marx brothers broke into his office, stripped naked, and sat around his baronial fireplace roasting potatoes until he arrived." Lol :3 love 'em.
I actually read somewhere that he never practiced (or only rarely) and that before he went on he'd just soak his fingers in warm water and then perform. That may or may not be true, but he's a genius either way. He inspired me to start playing.
Although I'm sure he played this, what you are hearing isn't what he's playing. Just before the apple comes out watch his left hand, he stops playing but the notes are still going. Also at the beginning he is playing low notes but the tone is much higher
This is a recreation of how Chicko got into the act. They saw him in the audience, Harpo threw him an orange, and he played this song with it. Something like that.
LOL I love your profile pic. I dressed as Harpo for Halloween one year. I was able to pull it off no one knew who I was at the party except the people that invited me. I went all out with a wig, top hat with elastic string attached to where I could pop it off and on like he did, my dad fixed me up with some of his old clothes and we used to rope for a belt. I even managed to get one of those horns like his with the black ball on the end and believe it or not I made it through the whole night without speaking which is the world record for me LOL no one would have guessed it was a skinny long blonde hair girl playing the part. The Marx Brothers where some of the funniest comedians there were and very musically talented too. It's funny most people thought that harco could not speak but his accent was so thick you could not understand him it was a great gag for him to come up with the whistling and playing charades so people could understand what he was saying. They do have a recording of his voice on RUclips if you want to look it up.
How could you not love the Marx brothers....Just up from the ghetto....spoofing social classes and pretention....and so adorably human and funny....could only happen once and they rocked it
:( Makes me jealous because I can't play the piano!! Grr... But, lovely playing! I admire the talent of the Marx brothers. Chico's piano playing never fails to entertain me. And about the apple/orange debate, I personally couldn't care less even if it was a peach or a plum, or an oversized brussel sprout. What matters is that he used it to play the piano with.
The tune is of italian origin and it's called Reginella Campagnolla! The american adaptation is called The Woodpecker song and the greek one Koroido Mussolini because it was a mocking song to the Governor of Italia during WW2
he didn't practise that much. He used to have piano lessons as a kid, but only once a week and only how to play the right hand (the teacher herself couldn't play lefthand and slapped his hands everytime he asked about it). There's a story that he soaked his fingers in hot water to subtle the fingers before going on stage, but that that was all the practising he did. However Groucho said that and Groucho said a lot of things
I'm not sure what he starts out with but he finishes with "Listen To the Mockingbird," a very old song that predates the Civil War and which somehow transformed from a sad lament to become the Three Stooges theme song!
one big talent died with this man... nobody can compare!.. todays music is 90% computer!.. RIP chico! xx
Chico had more talent in that 1 finger than 99% of all today's artists - combined !!! Very fitting that Chicago would give the "finger" to the watered down talents of today 🎹
Genius. Funny as hell, and amazing musical talent.
Shocked at this mans skills , he's a concert level pianist had he wanted to.
Hey mister can I play the piano ? Yes, yes, you sure could Chico..he and his brothers the greatest team of comedic geniuses EVER !!!
What a phenomenal family . All great talents. WOW.
Simply Mesmerising, If only this were the standard of professionalism by todays standards. Wish you were still with us Chico.
the song in Italy is known as "oh campagnola bella" that means oh wonderful country girl..it's an old folk song from Abruzzo (a region in the centre of Italy)
At the apple, my jaw dropped. I thought he was gonna eat an apple or something, but... wow.
Now thats talent! Chico you were amazing! 2 thumbs up!
Paul Smyth
3 thumbs & a "live long & prosper" up. 👍👍👍 🖖
OMG i laughed my ass off when Harpo began choking that girl

Chico and Harpo were great; but Groucho is the Greatest !
They were indeed a great gift to the entertainment business, and still bring a lot of fun to fans established and newly-acquired - thank heavens for the recording processes that have preserved their talents for us. And they came from the most humble and impoverished of backgrounds. Remarkable.
zeppo?...not so much
Uh, I think Chico was most talented. Groucho was just a front man.
"Chico was a piano player, but Harpo was a musician", according to their children. It doesn't diminish Chico in any way. Always makes me laugh these 3, Groucho, Chico and Harpo!!!
Don’t forget Gummo and Zeppo.
the music is an italian song recorded in 1938 the title is REGINELLA CAMPAGNOLA that means little country queen.
Canzone abruzzese
Absolutely superb. My favourite pianist.
He makes it look so easy 😱
i love how chico starts off playing like a bad ass
I have everything they’ve ever done on dvd including harpos silent pictures I love them 😍
Grandiose. Un génie. Il n’y a pas assez de qualificatifs pour cet artiste. Pour cette famille d’artiste. Merci à eux.
None can play better than Chico.
That use of the apple was so kung fu! No special effects then ladies and gentlemen. Believe your eyes!
In a perfect world, Chico and Harpo would've done a musical bit with Victor Borge
Absolutely incredible…wow!!
Truly gifted pianist!
They were 50 years ahead of their time.
Virtuoso. Unrepeatable.
What fun watching these short videos of the Marx Brothers 😊
Such a great talent on piano, wow im impressed!! *.*
phenomenal
Where do you come from...??
They were all brilliant
Bahahahahaaaa, Harpo is having a fit 0:25, poor girl!
Yeah, Groucho might have been the intellectual one of the brothers, but sweet Harpo and crafty Chico were not just side kicks but a superb team and VERY entertaining musicians!
Chico n Harpo make a cute team!
You will Never see Talent like that of Chico Marx or Harpo Marx These Days. And Not in a Million Years to come.
This is the Three Stooges theme!
Chico, you son of a gun! You never stop surprising me! : )
Chico. A genius.
It is impossible to dislike this.
In an interview, Graucho said he could have been a concert pianist. He said he never practiced his playing.
Groucho was sitting on a park bench in the Central Park one day. A Catholic priest sees him and hugs him saying: "Thank you my son for bringing so much fun into this world". The ever ready and witty Groucho replied: "Thanks father for taking so much fun out of this world"!!!

I loved the Marx Brothers mainly because they did not ridicule people or insult anyone to try to be "funny" as some bankrupt "comedians" feel they have to today.
I didn't know apples played the piano!
Yet here's Chico Marx, playing the piano with an apple!
Chicho on the piano...Harpo on the harp..or clarinet ( see Harpo blowing bubbles...on Kraft Music Hall in 1959. ) and Groucho. ....well...being himself....genius.!
It's not all that well known, but Groucho could play the guitar.
Hey mister, can I play the piano ? I'll say Chico could sure the play the piano, and Harpo the harp...and in their spare time become the greatest team of comedians, ever
MASTER AT WORK 💖
"Listen to the Mockingbird." Written in the 1860s I think, and yeah it was the Stooges' theme for a while. That and "Three Blind Mice."
That was Genius. I haven't seen this before :P
Decades before Lang Lang was born
I randomly remembered this.
🌚
Managed to find someone with the Piano sheet music on Amazon.
Needless to say only part of the melody bears any resemblence :-)
Time to get transcribing!
geniuses way ahead of their time in comedy not bad musicians also love them
so much practice my gosh SO MUCH PRACTICE
intimidating
Groucho said that and it could very well be true, it sort of fits Chico, but we can never really trust any the Brothers' stories, especially Groucho's, because the same story changes over and over again till you realize that maybe it never happened at all (: I love them so much (:

I believe Chico would have given Mozart a run for his money!
Ohhh, how I miss real talent, comedy, and good movies that Hollywood USED to make...
it was an apple because he was about to bite into it like an apple
Semplicemente meraviglioso!
I love the Marx brothers, especially Harpo.
You rock Chico!!!!!
The song is called, "The Woodpecker song" and there are words to it as well. My father learned this song in the 1940's.
and in exactly two minutes, too
you can tell hes enjoying that
Prop apple? Chico was amazing. He created this style on his own.
0:02, come on R2.
It bring harpo---chasing girls, offering a leg instead of a hand... He WOULD have bitten an orange! That would be easier to play piano with, too.

GENI!!!non ce ne sono piu' cosi'....
Where have all the pianos gone...the junkyard took them every one.
IMMENSI FRATELLI MARX !
I actually read somewhere that he never practiced (or only rarely) and that before he went on he'd just soak his fingers in warm water and then perform. That may or may not be true, but he's a genius either way. He inspired me to start playing.
me too! hes such a great inspiration
Unbelievably virtuoso!
Nice!)))) Tanks for posting!
wow exactly on the clock!!
Wow...just wow
For whomever is interested:
This is "The Woodpecker Song" by Harold Adamson and Eldo di Lazzaro :)
Ok, admit it, how many people go and try this stuff later? Lol, I know I did!!!
Probably a movie prop - rubber ball.
Although I'm sure he played this, what you are hearing isn't what he's playing. Just before the apple comes out watch his left hand, he stops playing but the notes are still going. Also at the beginning he is playing low notes but the tone is much higher
awesome
@The14thDoctor Hey, so long as it works, any fingering's fine in performance!
I think it's a pool ball! It just looks like an apple because Harpo is so convincing about how he's about to eat it.
Credo sia la migliore interpretazione di REGINELLA CAMPAGNOLA.
Encore!!!
This is a recreation of how Chicko got into the act. They saw him in the audience, Harpo threw him an orange, and he played this song with it. Something like that.
A little homage to the Three Stooges thrown in there.
goldfinger, there is goldfinger !
Hoooonk!

No one can do it like chico... I mean it...
Two words: DA FUCK?
Chico is the man.
How could you not love the Marx brothers....Just up from the ghetto....spoofing social classes and pretention....and so adorably human and funny....could only happen once and they rocked it
Apples are pretty solid, while oranges are actually kind of soft, so I think it's an apple myself.
fantastico e simpaticissimi i Marx
:( Makes me jealous because I can't play the piano!! Grr... But, lovely playing! I admire the talent of the Marx brothers. Chico's piano playing never fails to entertain me.
And about the apple/orange debate, I personally couldn't care less even if it was a peach or a plum, or an oversized brussel sprout. What matters is that he used it to play the piano with.
i started piano lessons bc of chico!
yea!
no Victor Borge, but he deserves his own categorie for what he's doing
Chico plays the piano with Harpo's left testicle.
because he's harpo. in the cocoanuts he ate the mouthpeice of a telephone among othe things you're nor supposed to eat :P
The tune is of italian origin and it's called Reginella Campagnolla! The american adaptation is called The Woodpecker song and the greek one Koroido Mussolini because it was a mocking song to the Governor of Italia during WW2
Un fenómeno, único
I think it was an apple. He does roll it instead of slide it. An apple could hold up to that.
he didn't practise that much. At 1:03 does a key E? get stuck?
and....unstuck!
