Harpo was a magical kind of person. He loved life and his family. The world lost a wonderful human being the day Harpo died. Harpo is my favorite of the Marx brothers. I love them all, but Harpo was amazing
Thank God we have these films to remember him by: THE ONE AND ONLY! He could do ANYTHING! ~Love you, Harpo!!!XD! (thanx for the post-we need to keep him on youtube for every generation to see REAL genius!)
I'm 63 I miss watching the Marx Brothers. Would ask me mom why don't Harpo talk. Always liked him the best for some reason. Next was Chico. My moms answer was how knows. For a died in the wool country & rock music guy. Harpo's play was great. Glad it's forever on film.
I'm 66 (feel, act & look 17 yrs old - haha). But I always loved old movies - got hooked on silents (Rudolph Valentino my fav & my grandma s also). There was a pizza place called Fireside Inn in Metairie, La., Metro NOLA Area. They used to play lots of movies - plenty of Marx Bros & silents too. But I loved Marx Bros movies - Harpo & Chico! Great & no lessons! Wow!
A true performer with brilliance and style. Harpo lives forever in heaven and our hearts. I life he was as gentle as his character, and could play many instruments simply by tapping his knowledge of music.
Harpo was never accepted by trained harpists because he was self taught. His mother sent him his first harp because she knew he could play it. They sniggered at his technique and called him amateurish. He took harp lessons as an older man to improve his playing and never gave it up.
im 60. ive been enjoying the marx brothers since i was 2.they never fail to bring a giggle, a guffah, or a tear. they were, and remain a gift. simple as that.
Fun fact: Harpo Marx was the first American entertainer ever allowed behind the Iron Curtain in Soviet Russia. It’s easy to see why. This guy would be loved anywhere he played in the world.
Watch "Laurel and Hardy in the Foreign Legion" and look for a brief harp 'bit' with Stan Laurel playing THE BED-SPRINGS. (Not actually Stan, of course) You'll love it.
Solid 22 carat class. He looked like a crazy angel, could make even a corpse laugh and best thing, he made an art form of virtuosity. No eulogy would suffice for this truly phenominal and great pesrson. God is merciful and there is the evidence...... e.T.
Harry Ellis Dickson, violinist with the Boston Symphony, wrote in his memoir, that Harpo went to the BSO's harpist, Bernard Zigara, for some private lessons. Zigara told Harpo that he had nothing to teach him.
From what I was led to believe, is that Harpo did not use 'proper' technique, and so 'professional' teachers could no longer teach him... They instead, would often observe and marvel at his unique technique...
Harpo did get lessons later on from the harpist Mildred Dilling, who became a close friend. If you watch the films in sequence Harpo’s playing technique does change as time went on but it remained unique right up to the end
Harps are still very popular in Austrian and Bavarian folk music. If you search RUclips for "austria folk music harp" you will find several videos, and then once you get into it, the algorithm will keep you well supplied.
They got together in 1952 on a show and performed the same routine (pretty much). It is on YT, just search their names and 1952. It is one of my favorites on YT.
thanks for the nice reply. I`m really glad there are people in this modern age who can appreciate such sublime virtuosity. I`m not sure he wasn`t the best musician ever. Have a great day. Jon :)
Muy buenos cómicos, para mí los mejores del mundo, buenos músicos, divertidos diálogos. FANTÁSTICOS. Los AMO. Un fuerte abrazo desde España. En el cielo se lo deben de pasar PIPA. OOOOOLEEE!!!!!!!
@friedman1962 I cannot find any documentation of Harpo having been able to play cello or violin. However, as the whole world knows, he played harp and was self-taught on that instrument, according to his son, Bill. Harpo was also able to play piano, clarinet and harmonica to some degree (also self-taught), but his principal instrument and his great love was the harp. I hope that this helps.
Hello, Excuse my English but French is my mother language. I can only say he is a pure genius and it was a great moment of pleasure to hear this music and see this sequence. The Marx brothers were really great and complete artists. Best regards
It's wonderful how they jazz up classical pieces. The Gershwin brothers wrote a tune, ( O CAN'T BELIEVE I can't remember the name) it is so famous! Anyway, it is stolen from Chopin. I know, because as a classical pianist, the first time I played that Gerwshwin tune, I stopped, in awe and said,"This is Chopin!". Almost identical. One of the fav things to do, is take a piece from Bach and just put different rhythm to it. As shown here, it is really cool!OH! 'Rhapsody In Blue' !
Harpo speaks is easily one of the best books out there. Harpo quit school in grade 2 because he got tired of being thrown out of the window by the bigger kids. Dude had an incredible life
What an era of entertainment. The Marx brothers were very popular. Many people don't know that there were 5 Marx brothers. Chico, Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo and the youngest Gummo.
The book, Minnie's Boys, talks about Chico getting piano lessons and there was only money enough for one. Harpo taught himself to play piano and harp. Excellent book, probably out of print. It was quite thick and our public library kept for years. I read it many times and wish I owned it.
Harpo was a magical kind of person. He loved life and his family. The world lost a wonderful human being the day Harpo died. Harpo is my favorite of the Marx brothers. I love them all, but Harpo was amazing
Could hrpo talk
He could talk but didn't like the sound of his voice for films so decided to be a mime.
I agree, Harpo was a wonderful man and an amazing talent.
I recall that his son Bill had said that Harpo had a New York accent. For instance, Harpo pronounced "turkey" as "takey".
Every time is see Harpo my heart smiles and I feel a whole lot better.
Yep totally agree
Chilling right now and enjoying the man at work

“How knows” is not an answer, genius.🙄🤦♂️
He still brings joy today! 😊
I fell in love with Harpo when I was 14. Now I'm in my young 60's and, sigh, I'm still in love.
Same for me
Young 60s? I think you have that backwards it’s supposed to be your 60 years young.

As Harpo put it best "You're only young forever!" 🙂😉
A true performer with brilliance and style. Harpo lives forever in heaven and our hearts. I life he was as gentle as his character, and could play many instruments simply by tapping his knowledge of music.
My daughter is a harpist and her first harp teacher was instructed by a lady who once got the opportunity to play with Harpo.
Awesome!
So, reading your comment, I am four times removed from Harpo and still impressed.

The Marx brothers movies are amazing and kind of ADD.
They go from smashing things to performing pieces of music beautifully.
Oh, wow! Such a delicate yet overwhelming touch.
Harpo, God's gift to humanity~
thank G-d he was not in Germany during the holocaust! who knows how many died who were like him.....
Gotta love the way he gets the harmonics at about 2:00, plus he played all the parts. What an extraordinary talent.
Fun fact: Harpo Marx was the first American entertainer ever allowed behind the Iron Curtain in Soviet Russia. It’s easy to see why. This guy would be loved anywhere he played in the world.
As described in his autobiography 'Harpo Speaks'. Well worth reading.
And he used the occasion to spy on them for the US government!
@grodhagen lol
@@ottooldenhardt “these are my spies”
I'll bet when Harpo got to heaven the other Angels threw their harps away and took up the harmonica.
lol
If there is a place with a multitude of angels flying around playing harmonicas, you may not have actually ended up in heaven..
@@bzbzob lol !
Actually, he was a good harmonica player as well.
Julie Anderson WHAT?!
i could listen to him play for HOURS, WONDERFUL JOB HARPO
It's pure genius. Harpo is a poet-musician and his music Heaven's sound. Thank Harpo!!!
I believe he is indeed actually playing all of those instruments 😊 Genius. I read he could play almost any instrument.
Uilleann pipes?
I can picture him as an angel playing a harp in Heaven.
Right! Right! Right! He's just a grown-up Cupid.
😇😇
If this scene is anything to go by there’s an orchestra of Harpo’s up there. Must be glorious!
I want to see Harpo one day and thank him for so many happy childhood moments and memories.
My favorite Marx brother and my favorite all time comedian!
I like the whole part, but it's also quite cool how they jazzed it up a bit
a musical genius. ...he was one with the strings....creating music for the soul. ...as well as a funny man RIP HARPO
I was born in 89 and the marx brothers were my first appreciation of music along with the looney tunes. Harpo reigns supreme!
I love it! Possibly one of the best harpists I've come across. I'm stunned! Thank you for posting.

When Harpo plays on his harp...it always relaxes me... ; )
You can tell that the moment he gets behind a harp and starts plucking the strings the real man behind the talent comes forth. Such a talented man.
I love when harpo plays his harp it relaxes me.
ME, TOO;-)))

From what I was led to believe, is that Harpo did not use 'proper' technique, and so 'professional' teachers could no longer teach him... They instead, would often observe and marvel at his unique technique...

Harpo did get lessons later on from the harpist Mildred Dilling, who became a close friend. If you watch the films in sequence Harpo’s playing technique does change as time went on but it remained unique right up to the end
Listening to his music makes you tear up. I wish there were more musicians who played the harp. It’s very versatile. We now have therimins
