- Inside the Luthier's Shop with BigDGuitars.com. Here is the video I promised of Ultra Penetrating Stain. What is great about these stains is that they don't raise the grain and you can go from staining to finishing relatively quick.
That literally looks like the most BEAUTIFUL sunset over the mountains! Very very impressive.
Reminds me of a Hawaiian sunset. Would have loved to see it completed
Scero Guitars I was thinking it looked like a sunset too.
It does look like a sunset!
pete p Exactly what I was thinking even before looking at the comments. I was stationed at Schofield Barracks on Oahu for 3 and half years. Was married then an watched many sunsets. Patent the finish Sunsetburst or Lavaburst.
it looks like a sunset in the desert. This is one of the coolest looking bursts I've ever seen! Looks like a painting,
I've looked at several of your projects, now - this particular one is far and away my favorite; probably the best-looking result I've ever seen, and I've seen many. Bravo.
Amazing!!! That belongs in a museum.
One of the coolest things I have ever seen. It really does look like the sky.
Love that guitar. The color you chose was perfect!
That is spectacularly gorgeous! I'm drooling over this axe!
Love your shop videos +BigDGuitars !
Wow! That is amazing. I agree, it looks like a beautiful sunset. I a truly amazed. Well done!
This is your best world class stained guitar, wow!
I think that's my favorite burst to date by you.
In my mind, it looks like what you would see right when you stepped off the ship after landing on Mars. Absolutely amazing.
This is one of the best looking guitars I've ever seen.
What a beauty!
Love this whole guitar.
Dual hum Tele with that finish is truly stunning.
Great job!
Strikingly beautiful! Of course, starting with that fantastic wood on the top was, no doubt, a major help! Thanks for posting.
THATS ONE OF THE NICES LOOKING GUITARS IVE EVER SEEN. WELL PLAYED MAN!
better than that black one for sure!
Yeah mate. This is sublime. I've never seen a look like that from wood and stain. Excellent work man
Fwiw, I know Mohawk calls these "stains" but they are actually Non Grain Raising (NGR) dyes. A true stain leaves pigments in the grain and emphases the grain. These dyes give an even penetration (especially if a sealer is applied first). You can also spray these dyes for sublter shading. Hope this is helpful…great video, thanks for making it!
Very nice! I agree, fabulous looking sunset, 3-D like! Thanks Big D!
Holy batcaves hurricane that is an amazing looking top, amazing work!
Another piece of art man. Congrats!.
Wow!! That is incredible! Very nice work
MAN! That is just gorgeous!
I've got to say, I absolutely love your videos. The more I watch them the more I want to actually try my hand at building a guitar. Keep up the great work man! Btw what kind of wood did you use for the top? I didn't hear it if you already mentioned it in the video.
I'm curious which brown you are using here? Mohawk has a half dozen different versions of "brown". Yours seems quite a bit darker than anything I can find on Mohawk's site. Great video, excellent knowledge. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like a sunset with clouds and shit. Looks amazing! Interesting Flame top with those 3 big streaks
beautiful work - great information
Incredible. Would it be weird if I said I really like your wood? On a more serious note, I'm curious why you often seem to choose tru-oil as your finish. Is there any particular quality that it has that causes you to go that route?
Spraying for me is difficult, I have gotten in trouble with the city I live in and I have a lot of dust around. I need a clean room and don't have that much space.
Fair enough. If you decide you want to spray and you have a dust issue, try partitioning off an area with poly and misting it with water just before you spray. The water will attract dust and trap it. It can make a big difference.

I have been doing the water on my last two tops the joe perry and purple burst. September is a good time to spray in Chicago low humidity and not too hot.
Cool. I don't know why I'm trying to give you advice haha, you clearly know what you're doing. Anyway, keep up the good work, and let me know if you ever start selling unfinished guitar tops; yours are always awesome.
Brad Angove
comments all good. Thanks for posting helps everyone out!
Absolutely beautiful!! What are the exact Mohawk colors you used ?
It turned out really nice! Going to try this on my next project. TY :)
Wow that looks crazy beautiful. Do you recommend Mohawk stains or just any dye will work? Any opinion on Keda?
+Keith S. I really like the angelus stuff
it looks like golden sunset. I love it!
That looks fantastic!
Amazing Art video you are a Mastermind sir
I need your help can you please tell me what clear coat do you use what sealer please help, and thank you so much
What a beautiful guitar. What type of controls would you use on this guitar? Would you do les paul type or tele? How are they mounted to the body?
Awesome. Love that colour combination. Would like to see it finished and assembled.
Steve Laszcz going to ebay in a few days, some one will get a nice project body
After you stain the guitar, do you use sanding sealer before applying the clear coat?
Yes sealer after stain.
@@bigdguitars Thanks, do you have a preferred sealer you like to use?
Perfect! Did'nt you sand it between the layers?! Or did you dry it between? It looks that it was just done all at once... 😉
Best regards - Tom
Stunningly gorgeous!
I have a few pieces like this left. need more time to get to this stuff!!!!
Wow dude this is beautiful work!
Well Finially, someone that knows what their doing. That looks very nice....
Everyone else looks like crap. That Paint dip is crappy lookin on the other videos. Nice job !!!!!
Looks great! Are the Mohawk stains something you have to buy on line, or are there stores that carry them? Thanks!
Just wondering I have no experience in painting guitars or anything for that matter. What would be possible to try the same coloration but with a pearl effect towards tigers eye stone meaning your end result here with the Tigers eye effect. Badass guitar by the way.
Watching and learning... thanks for sharing your job.
wow, that came out beautiful...i must have a go!
This is amazing! Where can I buy a piece of wood like the one used on this guitar?
Gorgeous, as usual.
WOW! looks like a fucking storm! BEAUTIFUL!
Looks incredible!
Did you apply the Truoil with a cloth also ? Did it not remove a lot of the dye ?
This is beautiful
Looks amazing!
I prospose we call this the Mars surface stain. It looks beautiful.
so the "pattern" of the colors completely depends on the wood used?
Yes
Wow! That top looks like clouds
This is beautyful!
Wow. That is beautiful!!!!!!!
you are really good at this
That is sick! i miss staining... its so rewarding
How do you combat end grain darkness. Avoiding darkness on the ends has been challenging
Was wondering if you could do this on a walnut top, very nice videos!
I have a mahogany firebird kit and I want to burst the front and stain the rest with a dark mahogany stain and have it wrap around the front. Will there be an issue using the dye for the front and having the stain overlap it. I am looking at using the Angelus dyes and a normal wood stain filling in the grain first. I appreciate the help and your vids.
Very nice finish... do you buff true oil after the final coat?
I have a vid on how I finish with tru-oil. Search How to Finish a guitar project with Tru-oil. Inside the luthier's shop video
Nice job looks sweet were in Detroit are u guys Royal Oak
Has it been routed for P90 or humbuckers? Will you ship to Canada?
Stunning!
very nice result
This is amazing!
You ever mixed water based stain with water-based dye?
I am just about to do something very similar to this using red as the base (instead of brown) and mixing the red & yellow to get an orange. I have never done this before and have a couple of questions....1. What do you mix the dye with ( I am using Mohawk Ultr Penetrating Stain? 2. How do you know how many drops of the stain to use? Trial and error?
stain goes right into the body. Trial and Error for sure. Test on scrap.
do a scrape off natural binding on the sides and it's a top to die for!
That's a stunner!!!
Beautiful!
it was looking pretty bad at first but it came together nicely .Looks good .
Gorgeous.
Looks great
Most impressed!
Darth Vader??
congrats!!! friend I bought my angelus leather dyes for my guitar
Hey i want to refinish my guitar in (slash afd orange) and i want to ask if you could do that maybe
Allright, how much for one of those?
Wonderful
awesome!
Damn that's pretty. #GuitarBoner
Did you sell this?
did you let the brown base dry before sanding back?
+José Domingos Teixeira yes let dry for 24hrs
thanks
José Domingos Teixeira do you let it dry between each colour or does it depend?(i'm making my daughter her first guitar and I would like to reach something close to yours. i've already brown stained a couple of scraps)
much better than the charred guitar
are those stains water based?
+José Domingos Teixeira no these are thinner based
And besides danish oil are they ok to be used with other oils? Do they come prepared or did you have to thin them yourself. Sorry for my ignorance. Amazing work by the way. This has to be one of the most beautiful dark bursts I've seen. Are there any other dark ones you like?(trying to decide what to do)
What wood is that on the top?
+mkaali wildwood maple top
Very beautiful wood!
why using brown . is black dosen t work ???
+moi meme different pigments the brown seeps into the wood better. black doesn't look as good, you want to use colors in the same palette. Brown red and yellow work
+BigDGuitars - merci beaucoup for your help ;)
cool!
Rickenbacker wood, I see.
Do it in my bass please...
The moment you said, "Pine", I was done.
Pine is NOT a Guitar Wood.
Eastern white pine is what I buy. Fender used on first tele bodies
Thanx; I apologize, was unaware Fender used pine.
