Gavin Morris point taken will get more finished product up there. I usually end up selling the parts off as I have too many things laying around as it is.
Love your work. Kinda kills me to see a Nighthawk or a Blueshawk though. Gibson stole the body shape from some friends of mine at St. Blues Guitars in Memphis. The story is that back in the 80’s, they went to Gibson to get a distribution deal. Gibson ultimately passed, but a year later came out with the Nighthawk. It’s basically a St. Blues Bluesmaster with a Gibson headstock and that obnoxious angled pickup.
Really nice work, looks so much better than that plain red top, youve brought that timebr alive ! I have a 95 Nighthawk Std (2 pup, split //), kinda tobacco brown, really well played, sounds great. The neck has many divots in the laquer and is worn thru to the wood on the treble side from the G 3rd fret for about 8 inches up the neck. Its beginning to make the guitar uncomfortable to play. I cleaned up the area with pumice powder and a bit of gun stock oil, then added about 10 thin coats of oil, let it harden and then polished with a final pumice and oil. Its So much better and hardly noticeable visually or feel. Wasnt sure about oil over nitro but seems ok so far. if it goes thru again Ill probably get the neck pro refinished, get a fret dress at same time. You ever done just neck refn work ? Thx for sharing.
That's awesome. I'm dealing with a similar project where the finish was bad and cracks were everywhere. Managed to sand down most of the finish, but the top is a thin laminate and I'm trying to figure out a way to remove the sealer of that top without sanding so much. Any suggestions on what to use?
I've actually never seen a Nighthawk (unbound neck/ dot inlay) with a maple top. Most of the "special" models were mahogany body with no top. But of course they did tons of strange "limited" models in the 90s and 00s.
you should try alcohol stain looks better not so fuzzy..mix into the clear......youre a good builder and i was thinking about buying some limba planks from ya..
+ant Sor I think since it wasn't a book match they went opaque. My assumption is they had a lot of mismatched tops and went with the non book matched opaque.
Hi, ive watched your channel for quite some time.... im a builder also, from your neck of the woods ... question for you.... i am about to attempt a very transparent sea foam green les paul with a grade maple about the same as this one... would you recommend a base color to help "pop" the grain as you have done here?, or should i just mix the color im going for and try to build up several coats and sand back each one to get the dye to soak in.....?
veneer tops are not that thick so you have to strip them then lightly sand. you can sand through the veneer if you are not careful. I sanded this off because I knew it was a real maple top
I have a question. What two colors would accent each other the best? I want the colors to pop so mainly bright colors. If anybody has an answer please respond thank you.
I have learned so much from your tutorials.
Straight to the point , no time wasted on small talk.
Thanx, keep em coming.
The yellow really brought out the figure..great job!
Couldn't agree more about the yellow bringing it all together. Even without the gold hardware it was the right choice.
Absolutely stunning, I'm going with this. Thank so much for the tutorials.
Wow. Magic.
I've watched a few of your vids now and wonder why we don't get to see the finished product, strung up and ready to play!?!
Ken Lelon Got to agree. They all finish just a bit too soon for me.

***** Cool. Please don't take it as a heavy criticism, this is one of my favourite channels.
Certainly a BIG improvement!!!
10:25 make me go wow!! Beautiful finish and nice work!

Looks incredible!!
I've never seen a Gibson with that pickup configuration, or the control layout. Shape looks pretty unique too.
Almost looks as good as our 2014 Nighthawk Standard..
Congrats on the results BigD
Looks really nice, great work!!
That turned out sweet!!
I think that's my favourite, stunner of a finish!
amazing difference, great job!
i think u do fantastic finishes.. i learned so much ..thank u for sharing your knowledge..
Boy, talk about an improvement!
Incredible! Amazing!

Bravo! Looks amazing.
Wonderful result, thanks for sharing!
Quick question: what ratio do you use for the water soluble pigment?
Cheers!

Gorgeous
this is amazing man!

RUclips added Tons of mid-roll ads to your videos. (And everyone else's too)
Gibson needs your help in the finishing area. ASAP!
hi, i have made the same thing but with red and black. You said that ayellow on black look awful.. do orange will be better??
Very nice ! I wonder what they thought at Gibsons when spraying that heavy almost opaque varnish on that wood.
+ant Sor I think since it wasn't a book match they went opaque. My assumption is they had a lot of mismatched tops and went with the non book matched opaque.
I prefer that irregular pattern than the heavy flame or quilt under super gloss finish one can find on PRS or others.
Can you talk about your experiences with crystalac brite tone?

Sorry... also..... great channel .....!
hmm.. darker will make it pop but thats a hard color to match. practice on a few pieces.
Dude, did you use 80 grit all the way through? .. But damn.. looking real sweet at the end..
What would happen if u used red as your base coat would it be to hard to see the flame ?
beautiful. i enjoyed that
Outstanding result!
Would this work on a veneer-topped guitar like an epiphone les paul?
veneer tops are not that thick so you have to strip them then lightly sand. you can sand through the veneer if you are not careful. I sanded this off because I knew it was a real maple top
wow! man, you really are a wizard. and gibson simply wasted a beautiful top there. great job!
the figuring is patchy but its got it! why cover it in paint???
What a shame. Gibson covered up that nice beautiful maple top. Way to show it’s true beauty!
I have a question. What two colors would accent each other the best? I want the colors to pop so mainly bright colors. If anybody has an answer please respond thank you.
PlaceNameHere I prefer brown and yellow or red and yellow
million times better
Wow!!!!!!!!
how much you asking?
ONE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS!!
Where's your watch ! This is one of the first videos of yours that your not wearing a beautiful watch.Cool paint job though.
That makes no sense at all to cover this with thick red, i don`t undertsnad why they would do that. You made is so much better!
Don’t waste you’re time watching, he doesn’t show the finished guitar.
Bastard tops, lol
That was an awful finish, shame on Gibson!
