it's too bad Connery skipped OHMSS but it's also unfortunate that Lazenby didn't come back as Bond seeking revenge on Blofeld in DAF. It could have been a really interesting and good flick.
The novel "YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE" is one of my favorites, despite its unusual nature. There is actually a movie out there which has a similar "character arc" in it... and it's "STARGATE" with Kurt Russell! At the beginning, he's completely depressed over the loss of his family. But midway thru the story, he "comes alive" again and finds a new reason to go on. Instead of viewing his assignment as a suicide mission, he decides instead to take out the evil alien and return home safely. The way Kurt Russell went from showing almost NO emotion at all at the beginning of the movie to becoming more "human" again by the end, is EXACTLY how Bond was in the novel, following the death of Tracy in the previous book. In this light, you can see how the title of the story made so much more sense than it did in the "YOLT" movie. Meanwhile... I find it extremely ironic that while most action films in the 70s became more serious, violent, sexy, morose and downbeat, the Bond films went completely the other way into self-parody. And the "007" newspaper strip became more violent, sexy, etc. totally unlike its film counterpart.
The novel Y.O.L.T. is after O.H.M.S.S. In the movie series is before. Bond films of the 60s are pioneering in relation to other action movies of that time.
It was interesting. Imagine if George Lazenby would have return as James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. This movie scribe would have been a little different. One change, 007 came back from his recovery from the loss of his wife, Tracy in his London home and going after Blofeld. The movie would still been the same everything as with Sean Connery. Lazenby would have made his 2nd and final appearance as James Bond. Roger Moore would still been the new 007 for Live And Let Die.
I think Lazenby could have been the best Bond if he stayed. His version of Diamonds would have been a great revenge tale, and then if he stayed around Live and Let Die that could have been a good way to start his trilogy of films. I could see him staying until 1981 or so then followed by Dalton in For Your Eyes Only. This would mean no Moore as Bond but still a good series.
It would have been interesting to see Lazenby appear in 'D.A.F.', but I think Hunt would have needed to return as director. I don't know how Hamilton would have handled Lazenby and he might not have given as much time and effort as Hunt did. Lazenby returning may also have meant 'D.A.F.' was more of a sequel to 'O.H.M.S.S.', or at least more in the style of that film. This is an interesting video and thanks for creating it.
I, being a dyed in the wool James Bond fan (from the first book, onward) was very disappointed that Lazenby did not get at least a second movie chance. Yes, he was a model prior to being given the role of James Bond, (where do all of you think some of the other actors in movies came from??) and, yes he (for the for the first time ever) gave James a little bit of humanity (yes, even a moment of fear!) so what? Do any of you really believe that there is ANY body out there in the spy game who, at some moment in time, does not have, or have shown, one or more of these of these qualities? Come on now, who is really kidding who?! Slippers384
Well done!! Loved it! The connection you make between the prior film and the revenge motivation for the death of his wife (using Lazenby rather than Connery) makes Bonds rather cruel obsession with killing Blowfeld at the beginning of DAF much more understandable. That continuity gets lost with the changing of actors. Again, wonderful job! Thank you!
They would have had to change the whole script. But I'm sure Diamonds would have been a more edgy film sort of like Casino Royale. With Diamond smuggling as the source of SPECTRE's income, instead of a stupid space laser.
It always made me wonder : with all the technology and resources MI6 has why the hell didn't his Aston Martin have bullet-proof windows ? I know they decided to stick closer to the Ian Fleming novel but really ?
rickw1100...I couldn't have said it better; you captured my thoughts! For us die hard bond fans, especially those who were very impressed by Lazenby as Bond in OHMSS, DAF doesn't have the same impact on us with Connery returning. Continuity was completely lost! I love the 1st half (up to 3:05) of this "Lazenby Edition". It's exactly how DAF should have begun in 1971. So sad Lazenby didn't do another bond film to pickup where cold blooded murder had cut a marriage short. Great job ELO1138!
Top job ELO1138. Nice edit. Like the Venice bit. My interview with GL is top ranked on Google and he was a complete gent. Told me a few things off-tape about his Diamonds contract and he could have done it. They wanted him to do it. I'm sure regrets not signing it. It would have changed James Bond history.... so maybe it was for the best. In my opinion all the stuff written about Lazenby is rubbish. Meet the guy first then have an opinion.
The piano music is Whispering Statues by Eric Serra from Goldeneye. The clips include: Who Saw Her Die?, The Man from Hong Kong and Return of the Man from UNCLE. The other scenes are from The Boys from Brazil
@ELO1138 you're right ... It was one of the best Bond films and I believe that Lazenby did a great job ! ... and I still can't believe that it was his first film ... to be honest ... I like him better then Daniel Craig !
Lazenby definitely deserved at the very least 1 more Bond movie.. too bad his agent gave him bad advice saying that the Bond films were a 'dying fad'.... and yet here we are in 2012 celebrating the 50th anniversary with Bond film #23 SKYFALL..... poor George.
What's funny there are two possible versions of DAF: a possible DAF with Lazenby had he stayed. The other was very close to actually happening, DAF with new Bond actor John Gavin who was hired and under contract to play Bond until one of the heads at United Artists convinced Broccoli & Saltzman to get Connery back.
Actress Ilse Steppat who played Irma Bunt, died of a heart attack in December 1969, after On Her Majesty's Secret Service. That is why Irma Bunt is never mentioned again in Diamonds are Forever and For Your Eyes Only. Maybe Irma Bunt will return in Bond 25, (with the rebooted Blofeld), however, there was no way Ms. Steppat was going to be in anything after she died, unless, they used previous film footage of her in a new movie.
Irma Bunt is never mentioned in ''Diamonds Are Forever'' because is a follow-up of ''You Only Live Twice''. In the first scene after gunbarrel. Bond is still in Japan looking for Blofeld, only because he is the head of a global criminal organization. There is no reference to Tracy, and they could replace Ilse Steppat (1917-1969) by another actress, as they did with Blofeld or Felix Leiter.
@ELO1138 Conti. So the script that was written before Connery left could've be radically different the final script in 69. Would Connery play the emotional ending or would it be another "off into the sunset with the girl" ending. Connery always had the look of confidence especially in the films post-Goldfinger. The train scene from FRWL is a prime example of Bond truly in a dire situation that he may not make it out of. This was taken further in OHMSS when Bond is trying to hide the crowd.
Lazenby said in an interview just after OHMSS that he quit because he thought that bond was too conservative and wasn't with the times. Do you think maybe this scared the producers just a little bit, prompting them to try make diamonds are forever more ... with the times?
@mahasurya We'll never know. OHMSS worked to Lazenby's advantage. In OHMSS (and in the book) Bond is lacking in confidence and patience with his superiors and himself. Lazenby played this side of Bond well since he himself was lacking in confidence during filming. OHMSS was planned for Connery early in the series but kept getting pushed back. The script went through changes. When Connery left it was decided that the next Bond should be truer to the book and have less gadgets.
I think that if Lazenby had done Diamonds it would have been a more serious film with him dealing with the loss of Tracy and seeking revenge against Blofeld and Frl. Bunt.
@ELO1138 Conti. So would the film be good if Connery was in it? We'll never know. But this film is my favorite Bond film for a lot of reasons (music, direction, Diana Rigg, the story) but most of all due to Lazenby. There was talk of remaking in film for Brosnan and some have suggested a version with Craig. I don't agree with this. This is film will always be Lazenby's film. He may have only starred in one, but its one of the best.
for what it's worth, the way you burned Stucky gives you plenty of street cred with me....sweet video btw. really makes you wonder what could have been.
Mongo Boogie Barry Nelson was the first actor to play James Bond in an American tv version of Casino Royale, he was an american agent and had the name Jimmy Bond. Have a look on here, its probably here somewhere.
You need to level up your English skills, big time. This can be done by completing high school or obtaining an equivalency credit in the subject. Best wishes to your mom.
Ohmss is the standout movie in the James bond series, what an incredible movie

I think "Diamonds..." is the best Bond movie ever. I would gladly give it up for this movie. The revenge element was so underplayed.

brilliant film... just epic

Love it the way you used the music from Goldeneye of the scene that Bond meets Trevelyan again. (1:52)

Seeing the mix of the scenes of Gregory Peck from The Boys from Brazil makes me think that he would have made a very interesting Blofeld.
Thanks a lot! The video is up if you are interested.
That was pretty cool.
Who Saw Her Die?, The Man from Hong Kong, Return of the Man from UNCLE

Lazenby rules, as the Greatest Bond besides Craig to play Bond real, and Miss you Tracy always."The Names Bond.James Bond!!
replace Craig with Dalton.
Dalton played Bond real before Craig I admit it, but I wouldn't replace him with Craig, who played Bond more real than Brosnan I thought.
John Mahmud I agree that Craig is like Dalton. Lazenby is like Bond in ''Casino Royale'' without the final scene.
The Gregory Peck scenes were from "The Boys From Brazil"; however, where did the scenes with George Lazenby and his mustache come from?
for what it's worth, the way you burned Stucky gives you plenty of street cred with me....sweet video btw. really makes you wonder what could have been.
3:28 Steve Guttenberg as Bonds Boy Wonder
This is how it should have been done - if only!.
Blimey, is George Lazenby in The Boys From Brazil? Crikey , I didn't know that!
With the moustache this remember me Christian Bale in TDKR
I wish george would have done more Bond !! =/
What movie or TV show are the scenes with the Moustachioed George Lazenby taken from?
Thank you =)
Do you mind if I make my own version of this with some of the same ideas?
Would've been better than that stinker of a Bond movie with Connery
@bigswano Yeah. I used clips from a movie Peck was in called "The Boys From Brazil"
The Laz......he was good as Bond...
Go right ahead =)
Nelson? Who's Nelson??? Unless you mean Niven but then you've already mentioned Niven in Casino Royale
Mongo Boogie Barry Nelson was the first actor to play James Bond in an American tv version of Casino Royale, he was an american agent and had the name Jimmy Bond. Have a look on here, its probably here somewhere.
Thank heavens this never happened.
not bad :)
They're titles, of course they should have capitals.
Mongo Boogie he is talking about Barry Nelson. Teleplay Casino Royale before the film series began.
James Bond with a stache, ha
It is indeed a reference to Electric Light Orchestra although I personally don't give a shit if I have any street cred with you, sorry.
You need to level up your English skills, big time. This can be done by completing high school or obtaining an equivalency credit in the subject. Best wishes to your mom.
What the fuck is your problem?
Facepalm
I didnt like it. The editing is bad, the aspect ratio is wrong and it doesnt make any sense. Just my two cents, of course.
Bad , Very Bad
