Diamonds Are Forever - Alternate Opening

  • What if George Lazenby had stayed on as Bond? What if Peter Hunt returned to direct? Using elements from On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds Are Forever, I've created an alternative opening to Diamonds Are Forever, based on an idea I had for it years ago. A bit rough in places but I hope you enjoy the overall effect it portrays!

    This is how Diamonds was meant to open. Peter Hunt (director of OHMSS) wanted this as the opening, rather than have it at the end of OHMSS. But because Lazenby left the role this never happened. I think had he stayed we would have got a much better film.

      Also, ilse Steppat had a heart attack and died less than a week after OHMSS was released. After that, they pretty much abandoned a revenge story. About the only part that can be interpreted as being connected to the earlier movie was the opening sequence where Connery Bond is trotting the globe and roughing up everyone like a madman demanding to know, "Where is Blofeld?"

    Even with George Lazenby stepping down from the role, I don't see why they couldn't have just made _Diamonds Are Forever_ the revenge sequel with Sean Connery in the role. I mean the actors are all playing the same character. Why the need to reinvent the tone of the movie and personality of the character with each recast? Does Bond just go through phases over the years?

    • @horrorfanandy4647
      @horrorfanandy4647 Год назад +10

      I personally like it when Bond does “go through phases” as you put it, because if they didn’t, we wouldn’t have gotten Timothy Dalton for example after they hit the brakes following Roger’s departure. However, in this case I am willing to make an exception, they should have continued this story and reshot Tracy’s death with Connery. It would basically be the exact same scene line for line. Tracy is shot and Blofeld drives off. (They’d have to recast Irma Bunt as well of course, because the actress died not long after production I believe) Then after he breaks down, Bond lets go of Tracy’s dead hand. The camera does a close-up on the wedding ring diamond, bam! Into the main title sequence, Connery is back and this time he is not playing around. Pure revenge and nothing on earth will stop Bond from completing his personal mission.

    Not going to lie...just watched On Her Majesty's Secret Service in proper and immediately jumped into this video...
    I cried absolutely hard and was in heartache upon seeing Tracy shot and Bond grieving his wifey twice. Continued feeling it until the end of this beautifully amazingly edited title sequence of Diamonds are Forever like I was actually attending a double feature of On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds are Forever.
    Like others, I was in goosebumps upon seeing George Lazenby's name over of Sean Connery, Telly Savalas' over Charles Gray, Peter Hunt's over Guy Hamilton and the surprise addition of Gabriele Farezetti, Ilse Steppat and Diana Rigg!
    Looking back the Bondverse film series in retrospect now that I've watched On Her Majesty's (gonna watch Becoming Bond soon) as part of Bondverse bingeathon prep for No Time to Die, George Lazenby should have stayed on as James Bond.
    He should've ignored his joke of a theatrical agent, signed the 7-film contract (he would actually do On Her Majesty's/Diamonds, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker), excel in acting, fight and stunt lessons prior to Dimaonds, have creative freedom for how each film should be visually presented (maintaining director Peter Hunt for Diamonds, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun before returning for Lazenby's swan song, Moonraker), each year do a Bond film and an unrelated film back-to-back (to help further broaden his credibility and portfolio as a performer), dominated the whole 70s, get high on green and extremely laid by all the chicks of the world! Despite being a cocky guy, George Lazenby is a full blown ladies' gentleman for an Aussie hippie. Suck on that Connery, you should've learned better manners of him!
    The Bondverse films if Lazenby stayed, the direction would end up resulting in novel accurate, realistic, R-rated, violent exploitation spy thriller films (sorry, kids! Nothing friendly for ya to see! Lol). Diamonds are Forever by having that recap of the final moments of On Her Majesty's Secret Service as the pre-title sequence easing the transition to the opening credits gives you a good insight of how the Bondverse films are going to be in the wake of the likes of Dirty Harry, The French Connection and Straw Dogs, I mean the public were ready for another brutally violent yet human antiheroic vigilante! Bond was ready to drop out of the Swinging 60s and jump in the same 70s action thriller crowd to further shine the Ian Fleming colours a lot more.
    The film franchise owners had plenty of opportunities that are completely wasted. Imagine all the money and praise it should've earned...Australia and America would easily go bananas for Lazenby's Bond more than Britain. He would've played the part similar to how Ian Fleming depicted the character in his novels and how Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig would play the role: a woman-bedding and pen-pushing cocky Englishman for a patriotic deadly assasin for the British government. A proper violent, cold-blooded, barracuda-driven killer yet more human and realistic than Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan.
    UPDATE: Watched all of the Bondverse films, got to No Time to Die and just like when I watched On Her Majesty's Secret Service - cried like a big baby at the end of the movie. Noticed On Her Majesty's vibes in that movie, if Diamonds are Forever (the revenge thriller we never got) had existed, I'd cry even more when we follow Bond's vengeance against Blofeld for ruining his wedding. We would've got No Time to Die vibes in Diamonds before there was ever such thing as No Time to Die.

      Lazenby will always be in last place for me, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad performance. It’s ever so slightly wooden in sections, but this final sequence is masterful stuff! If you watch films with him after this, his performances are so much more consistent, he wasn’t actually that bad of an actor when it comes down to it, he just needed more training before taking on the role of Bond.
      As it stands I honestly wouldn’t want the film without him, his portrayal of Bond peels back the layers of the character and exposes a level of vulnerability we have only seen in small glimpses (The Spy Who Loved Me, Licence To Kill) since, with the exception of Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
      Connery may well have pulled this off brilliantly, he was obviously the superior actor, and he said not doing this film was one of his major career mistakes, but I’m happy we got at least one film with Lazenby!

    I wonder how the scenes in Diamonds Are Forever would be different if George Lazenby decided to do one more film. I KNOW that the movie was originally conceived as a revenge filck if Lazenby had stayed, but would the same scenes in the real movie starring Connery still remain despite being a revenge film?
    - As i onow already, the murder of Tracy would be put at the start of the film as the pre-title sequence.
    -Would the same scene with Bond traveling the world beating up and strangling people for Blofeld's location be used if Lazenby reprised his role with him beating up and killing the fake Blofeld in his laiar?
    -Will the same Las Vegas setting be used?
    -Telly Savallas would definitely return as Blofeld, along with Gabrielle Ferzetti as Tracy's father from OHMSS, and keep the original cast in the movie (DAF) from our original timeline, such as Putter Smith, Bruce Glover, Lana Wood, Jimmy Dean, etc. In addition, perhaps Jill St. John could be replaced by Jane Fonda as Tiffany Case. Gert Frobe can also appear a Goldfinger's twin brother.
    -Would the scene where the police and the local sheriff chase Bond and Tiffany in Las Vegas along with the Killer Satellite/Space Laser scene remain?
    -I think the oil rig scene would be intact, along with the scrapped plan with having Bond and Blofeld fighting in the abandoned salt mine.
    -The ending would also be very different, but how would the scene where Bond and Tiffany were ambushed for the last time by Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd?

    I like the idea of having the death be the opening of the next movie because it allows Bond and the audience some time to be happy from the last film. Problem is I don't think the audience wants to listen to Diamonds Are Forever song right after Bond loses the love of his life. I think a different song or a different film should have followed up with On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I agree George Lazenby should of done Diamonds Are Forever because Sean Connery did a lazy job in it.

    They talk about this on the DVD commentary and 'making of' for Diamonds Are Forever (or OHMMS, cannot recall for sure which) - even showing the imagined titles transition between the two films. The big question is whether Diamonds Are Forever would have been the same storyline that we saw, if Lazenby had stayed on? I doubt it, as that film's script seemed to be all over the place regardless whether Lazenby or Connory was in it. At one point they were talking about bringing back Gert Frobe as Goldfinger's diamond-obsessed brother, LOL. Of course, there was that Lazenby appearance in Las Vegas as "JB" in The Return of The Man From Uncle in 1983 .... year of the 'three' Bonds?

  • @Lurvy1963
    @Lurvy1963 Год назад +4

    I felt cheated why they didn't make Diamonds Are Forever more of a sequel to On Her Majesty's Secret Service where James Bond has a very understandable grudge against Ernst Blofeld for the death of his wife. Why Blofeld's machine gun shooting sidekick Ms. Blunt wasn't with him in the next Bond movie. Besides looking for smuggled diamonds Blofeld was using to build a lethal, laser shooting sattelite, it would have made a better adventure for 007 himself. The organization wasn't called SPECTRE in that film, but with Blofeld as their leader, we couldn't mistaken the name of the evil cartel he led. I've wondered what if George Lazenby returned to play Bond instead of Sean Connery for the 1971 action thriller. Connery and the producers had a falling out with each other during the filming of You Only Live Twice.
