I love how the commentators remained silent and didn't talk over what was happening.
Because the moment speaks for itself and they, as pros, know it and they turn into fans at such a moment.
They nailed it.
Michael Kay is my dad, thank you!
I’ll tell bin you said that🙏🙏🙏
Doesn't get better than Kay
Some moments are far too precious to be ruined with a lot of heavy-handed words. The commentators’ silence through all this is beautiful!!!
Joe Buck would have been like: There you can see, Mariano, with tears in his eyes....what a moment....theres Jeter.....what a moment this is......and there he goes, off the mound, for a final time, what a moment in Yankee Stadium, He tips his cap, wow, what a moment.
@@jesuschristislord6790 or now it would be “let’s take a look at this beautiful moment with stat-cast!”

Having Andy and Derek go pull Mo from the game may go down as one of the greatest moves of Girardi's managerial career. Absolutely brilliant.

Girardi planned it. Never told Mariano .... and it was best not to.

This was the moment when I finally felt that my childhood was long gone. Seeing so many of my favorite Yankee players fading away into history. What a moment.
Yup. Happens to everyone. I had the same feeling when Emmitt Smith retired.
100% votes for the Hall of Fame ain't fading away.
Dude. Spot on.
😭 so true
Same. Don Mattingly is my favorite player of all time and I worshipped him as a kid. I don't have to mention any of his accomplishments because you already know them I'm sure. One of the hardest things was when he missed out on getting a shot at a ring in 95.' That was my senior year of high school and would end up being his final year as a player in the majors. The very next year The Yanks won the series. I think that was the moment my childhood started to end and real life began. It was sad but I am fortunate to look back on that time as one of the best times of my life cheering for one of the classiest acts in baseball history.
I just can't imagine the feeling. You've worked your whole life and dedicated it to one thing, and now it's over. Being done with sports after senior year was hard enough. I can't imagine a lifetime
Yeah. When I was in high school, I worked very hard to get a spot on the football team and I did. After my very last career game which ended in a double overtime loss in the 2nd round of the playoffs in November 2019, when I saw the game end, the waterworks began to flow into my eyes as I knew that after working so hard to become a high school football player, it was finally over as I became emotional and exited in tears. It was very tough for me to say goodbye to my teammates, and the game I loved.
Very difficult. I'm facing these moments in the next few years myself and don't know what I will do. This video, especially the last moments of him in the dugout, speaks volumes of how was thinking.
I cried my SR year cos I knew it would be my last time ever playing damn I just got teary eyed
Those are my thoughts EXACTLY! they've been doing this since they were KIDS! and now it's over... #WOW!!!

I have never been a Yankees fan and never will. But Mariano Rivera was posibly the greatest closer in baseball. A class act, a consummate player and an emotional tip of the cap. This is what all athletes should strive for.
Yes he was a class act! And there's NO doubt he IS the greatest closer of all time.....its not even close.....
vlredreign I hate the Yankees but this guy is definitely the best closer. There are some really good ones but not as good as Rivera.
I loved the. Yankees and was in tears seeing him leave
I hate the Yankees with a passion but Rivera was one of the best closers of the game.
what do you mean "probably". Mo is the greatest closer of all time. There is no dispute. Name me someone better. I dare you!
When Andy and Derek walked up to the mound, it was like, "Hey kid, welcome to Valhalla."
😂
This is GOLD! LOL.
Yes yes yes yes yes spot on hahah
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Rivera's change of expression when he realizes what's happening and what it all means reminds me of Jim Bouton's line in Ball Four, “A ballplayer spends a good piece of his life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.”
Baseball's not always perfect. MLB doesn't always get it right. But this moment in time, was a showcase of everything good that baseball is.

It's the rarest of instances when you have a class exemplified hand the baton to another during his most gracious exit! It was beyond fitting that one of baseball's best men (Jeter) comes out to the mound to embrace another best man (Mo) as he bids farewell!

I don’t think that Jackie Robinson could have hand picked himself a better player to be the last to wear 42. A player that has always been the standard for amazing ball play and unconditional respect and kindness. Values that Jackie’s memory commits us to remember every day. Mo embodied it perfectly.
This was done perfectly from the start. Pettitte and Jeter pulling him from the game and not a word being said from the announcers. Perfect.
This is a video I keep coming back to again and again when I want to be nostalgic/sad/happy. Such a beautiful moment.

You can tell by the look in his eyes he doesn't want to leave the diamond. Man what an emotional moment.
Only player in MLB history to go in the HOF 100%. Nuff said. Mo was beyond human and just a Godlike closer and classy. Not a showboat, never spoke ill of anyone, never got thrown out. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.😁🙂 You'll never see a closer or a guy like this ever again in the game.
And did it with one pitch , it’s insane
1:46 It's a small thing but I loved when Girardi quickly picks up the ball and gently places the ball back in Mariano's glove.
Bravo to TV broadcasters Michael Kay and Ken Singleton for not saying a word for almost 5 minutes.

I'm a huge red sox fan but I have the most upright respect for this man he's done plenty of years and kicked ass every time he deserves a retirement
Such a sweet guy. He deserved the magic life he was blessed with.
I loved how the catcher just stood there looking bewildered.
I'm not even a Yankee fan by any means, but this was well deserved. He wore 42 with grace.
I still can barely believe I was there that night. This and jeters last game were my best experiences ever
Na. My best experience ever was the final game at the old stadium. I stayed there until this police officer told me I had to leave. I told him just give me another minute. And after that he walked me out the stadium.
Courtney Gibson now that's a good story. I remember my last visit to the stadium (the day before the final game there), took me a while to get out of that place. But being at Jeter's last game does the job for me.
Courtney Gibson I traveled back to NY in august 2008 to see the old stadium for the last time...I was sitting with the bleacher creatures.....very similar to what happened with u...security allowed me to stand there for about 10 minutes to soak it all in for the final time in my life....two best moments for me...jeters last game ( still have the moment recorded on my cell).... And game 2 of the 95 alds ( the Jim leyritz game)....I've been to over 300 games in my life... When mattingly hit that hr in the 6th inning.... I've NEVER heard that stadium louder....I was sitting in the first row of the right field upper deck....sierra went yard right before mattingly.... O Neill went yard in the 7th off Charlton... Then leyritz hit the 2 run hr off Belcher....and I believe pat Kelly was on first...still the best game I evet attended
Andre Vaughn that old stadium bring me back so many memories in my lifetime when I was a little kid. I used to live near Mt Eden Ave which is 3 stops away from 161st when you take the 4 train.
Courtney Gibson nice!!!! I know EXACTLY where that is! I was also at the day night double header in 2000 when gooden beat the mets at Shea in the first game.... Took the subway to Yankee stadium and watched piazza get beaned by Clemens in the second game.....I was sitting behind the plate in the upper deck....
Years later and I still cry every time I watch this.

Un jugador que entregó su corazón al juego, a los Yankees y al mundo. Honor para Mariano Rivera.
That's the stuff you gotta love about baseball; camaraderie, sportsmanship and appreciation. Even the opposing team had stood and showed their respect. And, I'm not even a big baseball fan...
I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I will always hate the Yankees, but Mariano was one of the few players of that team that really earned my respect and liking. Not just because of his dominance, but his class, and overall personality on the field. He was one of the most unique players the Yankees ever had, and I don't think even Jeter had such class.
I really hope Rivera's greatness is not matched for a long time. He earned his greatness.
my thoughts exactly
who d fuck needs to listen to u anyway
Oh god, who gives a shit if you dislike the Yankees or not. Why does everyone have to preface their message with this or "I'm a fan of ____" before they go on to say how much they respect a player. No one cares.
The Yankees have had some really great, respectable players. Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams are two of my all time favorites, and like you I am not a Yankee fan.
Leo R. Because most comments come from three types of people. 1. Fans that don't see him pitch regularly because their respective team is in another division, but respect who he was as a pitcher. 2. Fans that saw him pitch for years like me, A RED SOX fan, just for your personal knowledge, and saw him dominate for years on end, but respect who he was as a pitcher, 10 fold.
And 3. People like you that leave comments for the mere fact that they need to show their distaste for someone else's opinion and how they express it. The true comment that "no one cares" about.
So, that's why.
I am a grown ass woman in 2018, still getting choked up and emotional watching this.
Shout out to the greatest closer of all time.
Been a fan at age 12..now 72 and it hurts to see such great Yankees come and go...it brings tears to my eyes and all those great games and memories....he was the best closer I believe....a wonderful man...I miss them all....
As a Red Sox Fan, That what was one of the greatest moments in baseball history. Not only an outstanding closer but an incredible human being.
"Tears and cheers" is absolutely right. I cried like a baby watching this live at the time. And again watching this video. Any true baseball fan could not deny how incredible Mo is. It would have been nice to see Jorge Posada make a surprise appearance and walk out with Derek Jeter and Andy Pettite. Even watching Joe Girardi cry brought me back to when he used to catch for Mo back in the 1990s. So much history with all those guys. Incredible.
This guy was so good it's hard to comprehend. I thought I saw the best when I watched Jordan play, but I think Mariano may have more respect than Jordan will ever have. For years all the Yankees had to do was get the lead by the 8th inning and the game was over. Unbelievable stats, but the postseason this guy is so far the best ever. Mets fan here, should have rooted for this guy.
@Jack Straw His work ethic was tremendous and u could tell he took care of himself to where he didn't let himself wilt! He was 45 that night! Unbelievable
GOD made a closer, his name is Mariano Rivera and he not only had the most saves and got 100% HOF vote but lived in these rare times a clean life and cared about others. Yes, you can do the same thing just know that doing the right thing pays off.
And by doing (off the field) and playing (on the field) it the RIGHT way as well! U may never again see not just one guy, but a franchise at one period in time, have multiple guys who all played and displayed themselves with the utmost class and respect for the game and it's integrity (Mo, Jeter, O'Neill, Bernie)! Unprecedented in the best of human form
