Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera... two Yankees who carried themselves with such class that even Red Sox fans had to admire them in the end. Rivera's smiling, hilarious tip of the cap to the mock cheers is still one of the coolest displays of good humor and class that I've ever seen.

Rivera was all class and a very good sport. Boston fans LOVED Rivera, he was all business and the most feared closer of all time but also, a real guy who could take a little ribbing and be confident enough to laugh and smile. Respect to Jeter and Rivera, thank you NYY for honoring Ortiz at Yankee Stadium we appreciate that and always will

Mo lived in my building in NYC and met him in the elevator. Have to say it was the only time I have been star struck. Had my Sox hat and he joked with me about it. Told him I use to love see him come into games at Fenway and cough up a lead. He laughed and I told him he was genuinely one of my favorite players I have ever watched.
I think much like Yankees fans there is mutual respect for great players even if they play for the rival. I booed jeter and Mo for 20 years out of respect not hate. Long live the greatest rivalry in sports.

@@Timg1231 that's an awesome story! Glad to hear he is as personable as he seemed on TV. But you know, despite how good the Sox were, historically, against Rivera in the clutch, it never stopped me from feeling dread when he stepped on the mound. I was 11 during the '03 ALCS and 12 the next year. To me, the guy felt like an incarnation of the Reaper. I wonder if young Yankee fans around my age at the time grew up feeling that way about Big Papi.

One thing I will truly say, I've been a Yankee fan for over 40 years, seen alot of greats, Goose, Guidry, Mattingly, Winfield, Nettles,, Niekro, Henderson, the list goes on!! But the greatest thing about sports, you need a rival, or villain, to make it worth watching. Magic had Larry, Wilt had Russell, Borg had McEnroe, etc. &, the Yankees have the Red Sox, as much as I love the Yanks, & will to my dying day, I tip my cap & give respect to the RedSox, & the beautiful Fenway Park, for this. As a diehard Red Sox fan, I haaaaaaaate the Yankees with every fiber of my being. That said, there are 2 Yankee players who I could never hate (and both of whom I GREATLY respect): Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. When Jeter and Rivera began their careers, I automatically wanted to have disdain towards both, but while I cursed them for their great play, that disdain slowly transformed into begrudging respect, not only for how they played, but even more how they handled themselves off the field.
Remember, I haaaaaaate the Yankees as a team, so if either Jeter or Rivera were jerks off the field, it would be VERY easy for me to hate either of them lol. But, Mariano was/is a devoted family man and devout Christian, while Jeter always seemed to just handle himself with class off the field. Never any reports of drugs, hanging around with shady figures, etc., so that combination of excellent ballplayers and being good dudes off the field warranted my utmost respect for both. Hell, I even LIKE both guys (has to be sacrilege for a Sox fan to say that about ANY Yankee player, I'm sure).

Probably said this way down below. Yankees fan since a little boy in the 60's. And a Yaz fan just as long. The fact that Yaz was out there so quickly...man, says a whole lot about both of them! Terrific!

VERY classy send off. As a long time Yankees fan, deep respect for the BOSOX for this great tribute. I lived in Boston for 4 years of college and saw the true Boston heart. Caught a game in Fenway. Great sports town!!! Great heart. Well displayed here. Thank you all for this memory!!!

Big Yankees fan here, but I really, really, really miss the early to mid 00’s when that Yankees & Red Sox battled it out. That chapter closing hit home when Jeter retired. So many good memories watching the games and especially in 2004. My heart hasn’t been right ever since. This is still the classiest send off I’ve ever seen. Although these two teams will always be rivals on the field, here’s to wishing a lifetime of health and happiness to all the Red Sox fans and friends! 🍻

The Greatest tribute of all. I'm a Yankee fan since birth but I will admit Boston did an incredible job, thank you! Damn, to see the Green Monster, then Yaz showing up. Wow. Then Bobby Orr??? The Celtics? Omg, what a ceremony...Love that Derek stayed the whole time next Yaz...
They even played "Mr. Blue Sky" by ELO!!!

I was at that game. It's hard to believe it was almost 10 years ago. I found it fitting that the last foul ball Jeter hit in his last at bat was caught by a man in a Yankees shirt down the first base line. I was also on the first base side but back under the roof in the grandstand seats where this guy was down front in box seats.

The thing about baseball is that its always on. Long games. All summer. From Colorado, I used to go to Long Island to see my relatives in the summers for a month to a month and a half and got to see the 90s dynasty form. A million cousins my age. Grannie had a a pool so wed play whiffle ball and swim, and go to the movies, and on a special occasion...hit a yankee game...when the grainy 90s tv and the sounds of John sterling and Michael kay on the radio became reality. Jeter was a rookie my last year of elementary school. During his career, I would go through middle school, high school, screw up in college, become an apprentice, and later a journeyman electrician and go onto do pretty well for myself. And like the frog in boiling water, you dont realize the clock is ticking. Through every up and down in my life...there was Jeter playing shortstop. A dependable solid who was always there....until he wasn't.

Love coming back to stuff from this era. I'm a Yankee fan and have hated the Sox since I could understand the concept of hate.
This was first class. One thing I've always admired about the Red Sox is their commitment to honoring and holding on to their past. So many breaks have renamed their stadium with the highest bidder. But the Yankees and Red Sox have never budged. Love it.

Yaz will always be my favorite Red Sox of all time. It was nice seeing Rico out there that day to honor his fellow short stop. I love these moments when Boston goes out of its way to honor greats from opposing teams. I was there when Ripken was celebrated. Fenway is such a special stadium. It's been stated more than a few times, particularly by teammates of the honorees, they sit through these ceremonies in every city but Fenway is different.

Boston fans are always willing to recognize greatness... in the end, but usually not while the guy is beating us. I was at Reggie Jackson's last game and for about 2 hours different individuals jumped the wall, ran out to shake Reggie's hand and the were hauled off by security.
Watching all those before them getting arrested did not deter those who came after. Boston loves legends. Jeter is one of the finest MLB players I have ever seen and was a class act his entire career
