He was so good that he basically threw one pitch over and over and made pros look like little leaguers. I'm glad I was able to watch him when he was active.
The key was that he could throw that one pitch in a multitude of different ways. Was it going to break hard away from righties? Or sharply down? Or was he going to throw it like a 4 steamer? You would have to guess, because all of the variants looked identical until you had to swing.
@@Tampa370 His cutter didn't come in few years after his rookie season. The regular Season saves record is insane, but honestly, the truest measure of Mo's Greatness are his 41 post season saves, He was a MACHINE! Teams you play in Post season are the best teams from that regular season, and he dominated. As insane as it sounds, he was 2 times better in Playoffs and World Series, he wasn't perfect, but his percentage 89% FAR outclasses any closer in history, with comparable innings in playoffs. It's 8.4 to 1 for Rivera, and the average for the rest of MLB closers was 2.1 to 1 in save differential. He was a freak. There will never be another like him.
it was a true honor to be a Yankee fan during these core four years. The yankees have given me and my buds so may awesome and majical memories. Congrats big Mo!!
With the houston astros sign stealing fiasco going on, you have to appreciate the greatness of mo. You already know what is coming, no sign stealing required, yet still they couldn't hit it
His consistency was in large part due to the ability to recreate the throwing motion of his pitches he through strikes pitched to contact all of which minimized arm stress and he watched a lot of spectacular pitchers come and go the first 100% er in the hof the perfect exclamation point

Glad I got to witness Rivera playing when I was growing up. Started watching Baseball in 08 & Rivera is the best player I’ve seen play since I’ve started watching. That was a fun Yankees team too, used to be a huge Rays fan & I loved those battles back when the Rays had Longoria, Crawford, Upton, Price. Loved watching Jeter, Cano & Arod on the Yankees too. “The Babe Ruth of his position.” Well said by Michael Kay. The unquestioned greatest ever at what he did, at one of the hardest roles to play in any professional sport.
Despite the fact that most statheads HATE the save, we all love Mariano Rivera. He was so good when he was on the mound, he would have been a fringe HOF candidate... if he threw starter innings. The fact he was worth 56 (r)WAR over 1200 innings is STAGGERING.
@@nicaj7713 Saves, like wins and losses, don't always tell the correct story. It is very easy to pitch well enough to deserve a win or save, or poor enough to deserve a loss, but not get them. And stats should tell you how well someone pitched.
As a hitter you might have been better off swinging at the first pitch with Mo on the mound. Relievers need to get ahead, so very often the first pitch is the best one to hit. The idea that you could work Rivera to the point he might make a mistake because he was somewhat tired, was very unlikely. He was too efficient, too precise with his pitches. About the only advantage the hitter had was that he was always around the plate, and pitchers like that do give up hits on 0-2 and 1-2. But the bottom line is that a reliever has to put himself in the best position possible to be successful, and that factors in quality of pitches, control, location, efficiency, and the ability to field ones position. When you take all those into consideration, Mariano is number one without question. The efficiency aspect has the bonus of making it easier for him to be used for multiples innings and on consecutive days. Congratulations for making it to Cooperstown Mo.
