I love how in the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry no matter how many blows and insults are thrown, it always turns into mutual respect at the end
That's because both fan bases are true baseball fans not just fans of their own teams.
Respect! That’s what it’s all about
@@emm28bee true but I also think that Americans are just like that in general. We "hate" our rivals but deep down we truly respect the other side. I hate the Cardinals, and Packers when they play my teams but in the playoffs I pull for them because if my team has to lose to my rival I want them to be the best. If that makes sense.
Greatest rivalry in all of sports
Love that you realize this and respect mo because he was the most respectful man you could have ever met in your life he would give you the shirt off his own back that's how nice he was. Even the Red Sox have so much respect for him which means so much everyone loves mo!!
Let’s be honest.
The Yanks and Sox always have been and always will be the one truly great rivalry in American sports.
True but Cubs and Cardinals as well as Bears and Packers are right up there. Those are 1a, 1b, and 1c.
wash beezy nah, Dodgers Giants
@@chansebunker7373 That's a good one too.
@@djbeezy Dodgers giants literally crossed the nation just to continue to hate each other!
@@chansebunker7373 That's why on ESPN they still say the NY football giants. because the giants used to be in NY just like the Brooklyn Dodgers
Rivera and Jeter are two Yankees that Sox fans respect. Love those two.
It's hard not to respect players like Rivera, Jeter, Bernie Williams. Great players with such class. Respect from a Sox fan.
You can't beat us that that often, for that long, with that much class, without earning the respect of the entire organization.
He walked in out of that bullpen and all hope of a rally would die. One of the best ever.
As a diehard Yankees fan, I can think of only one word to describe that tribute: hilarious! That video they showed of the 2004 ALCS and opening day 2005 was hysterical. I was chuckling the whole time. The gifts and the tributes were classy. The Red Sox definitely showed that they are rivals worth respecting.
@yankeesfanboy99 grow up buddy
TOUCHÉ It was done with class.
Lifelong Sox fan... had to come back and see this tribute again after today's news. Congrats Mo on the UNANIMOUS Hall of Fame induction. Truly deserved for your masterclass talent and top tier professionalism.
I'm pleasantly surprised that he was unanimous. I was fully convinced that certain voters would come up with excuses ("He's a closer.", "(Insert names) weren't unanimous, so why should he be?", etc.).
Reliving that 2004 game and it still hurts 20 years later.
As a Red Sox fan I hated seeing him come out of the pen but I ALWAYS respected him 100%, epitome of class
I didn't. The Sox had his number, we lived in his head. But I love the guy.
Mariano Rivera had a record of 13-7 with an ERA of 2.86, 120 strikeouts and 58 saves in 115 appearances against the Red Sox in his career. Only a few players had his number, but really no teams ever had it long term.
@@GGFFVme Still hated seeing him lol
@@brmillgr And that's the thing about Mariano. A team might beat him once, but everyone always knew that they'd not win against him (for a long while at least) once they faced him again. Never seen a reliever before or since that could do that. Probably never will, at least as consistently as him.
I always dreaded seeing him walk to the mound, even knowing that we did sometimes get the better of him. Odds were he was going to shut the Sox down, and even if we got to him I knew I was in for 20 minutes of stress.
As a Yankees fan, I thought the first part was hilarious and a touching tribute. Its a fierce rivalry and it would only be fitting to show a little of that in the ceremony.
Justin Li Rivera is a class act and I’m saying that as a Red Sox fan
From a St. Louis Cardinal fan, even I have to admire the class shown by the RedSox fans and organization showing respect and admiration to a longtime foe like Rivera. Applause all around, nicely done.
Respect to Big Papi telling the fans to stand up and cheer louder. No matter how heated the rivalry gets there’s always respect between us Yankees and those damn Red Soxs.
Yankee fan here...even with the rival between are teams in the end we all have respect for each other. Thank you for treating Mo with such respect.
As a Red Sox fan for nearly 2 decades now, I rewatch this almost 7 years later and it still makes me tear up. Mo was one of the greatest men to ever play this game. Very much deserving of the unanimous voting into Cooperstown.
Yankee fan here. I don’t think we will ever see a rivalry like we had in the late 90’s/early 2000’s
Last MLB player to ever wear 42 since he was drafted a couple years before every team retired that number in honor of Jackie Robinson. I'm a Red Sox fan and this was a very great move by the organization to honor one of the best closers of all time. Mariano Rivera may have pained us at times and almost did it in the 04 pennant but he definitely deserved this honor. A great tribute to an MLB player who worked his butt off for 19 years.
I love the way he tipped his hat Opening day 05 when he got standing Ovation for giving away so many games in 2004 ALCS
He had no right to wear that number!!! I don't care when his ass was drafted!
Dude, the idea of retiring 42 didn't exist yet lol.
Red Sox fans will always love this guy for his less than stellar performance in ALCS in 2004 and how he was classy during 2005 Ring Ceremony when he got standing Ovation for said performance and bowed and tipped his hat.
42 was retired sometime after Mariano entered the league. It's like the lambeau leap in football. He was grandfathered into the rule
Props to the Sawx. Giving those "pieces of Fenway" is classy beyond belief! Bravo!
Thanks, Boston. We stood with you in 2013. You stand for class, here and always. Beautiful.
You know he's gotta be the GOAT when the Red Sox are showering a Yankee with love.
I grew up watching Mo pitch. Was lucky enough to see him close many games at Yankee Stadium. I cried my eyes out when he was finally walked off the mound.
Red Sox, from a life long Yankee fan, but more importantly a baseball fan, thank you for this ceremony, it was very well done and I greatly enjoyed it. May players always do their best and the respect come for all.
Sitting here watching the Boston Red Sox honoring the New York Yankees Mariano Rivera for his incredibly stellar career as Major League Baseballs All Time Closer. Being a lifelong Yankees fan. It is always a pleasure when the Biggest Rivalry in all sports, take the time to show one another the true respect they have for each other. Thank You Mo for the great memories you've bestowed on the Yankees Nation and the baseball world. Also Thank You to the Boston Red Sox players and organization for being such a class organization.
Wow, me being a yankees fan and growing up in the 90s through the 2000 era, I will say I couldn't stand the red sox but I loved the rivalry and the competition both teams brought. At the end of the day it was its a competitive sport. And to see how to red sox would do such a thing for our closer like they did, it shows a tremendous amount of class from them. My hats off to the red sox management and fans for their most gracious form of respect. Thanks for the great years Mo. Congratulations
Thanks for the memories, Mo. You have a special place in the hearts of all in Red Sox Nation.
This is AMAZING. Im a Phillies fan, but love the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. Got to him see him pitch against my Phils in Game 3 of the ‘09 WS. As soon as he came to the mound my thought was “Game over. On to game 4”. I was right.
They always bring up class with Jeter, but everyone forgets about Mo. That clip of him at the 05 opening day says a lot about him.
He's a better man than I am. I would've done nothing, or flipped them off
The Sandman is a treasure in Major League Baseball.
This makes me proud to be a Red Sox fan I always loved Mo and feared him when he was up to close out the game against my Sox!
There's a long rivalry between these two teams, but they're still the gold standard of pro teams, in any sport.
Amazing. On every level. Never forget that 3 inning performance in game 7 of the '03 ALCS probably his greatest performance. Classy classy classy move by Red Sox brass. That '05 opening day introduction I'll never forget it was so freaking cool the way he smiled & acknowledged his place in Red Sox nation. Love that they mention how he never showed anyone up. #42 4ever!!!!
I was born and raised in Easton, Massachusetts. I remember watching Carl Yastrzemski play the first time I went to Fenway Park. I have seen more games than I can count were Mariano Rivera came in to save the game. And did so to my chagrin. Yes, the Yankees are our biggest rival. But or boils down to it. We are all baseball fans. And Mariano Rivera is the best at what he did. So congratulations. And thanks again for that night in October 2004. LOL
Hats off to you, Mo! You and Jeter! Both worthy opponents who are truly missed in the game.
As a loyal Yankees fan who has seen many a game between these two arch-rival teams, I want to tip my cap to the Boston Red Sox. What a class act your organization is. It is a game where we support our teals with passion. But - in the end, we are all fans of this great game. Kudos to you, Red Sox Nation.
Papi in the background at he beginning
sccrdude22 he was telling the sound guys that the volume needed to be turned up
🤣🤣🤣
Gestures like this is what makes the American Sport so great. You have at home of your most fierce and eternal enemy you recognized your value as a professional and your amazing career, is a detail of greatness that honor the Red Sox and their fans. I truly believe that this will be, among the many that you have received in this his last year of career, the most important of the tributes that Mariano has enjoyed.
Yankee fan, proud the rival is a team with class.
I love seeing "rivals" still being able to show class and respect to each other. As a Braves fan, I loved the Mets tribute to Chippers last game at their park.
Classy just like baseball should be
This choked me up. As did David Ortiz's tribute in Yankee Stadium in 2017. Very cool.
Very gracious of you to say what you did and appreciated by this fan who has rooted for the Sox since the 60's. . Fenway also has the flag at half mast when mantle passed.
this was class red sox from a yankee fan
He's great at what he does and from everything I've seen is a great guy. He's one of the most respected men in baseball. Of course people are going to show respect for him during his retirement year. He's earned it.
Man I miss Mo. Guy had the best control for a pitcher you’ve ever seen. Absolute dominance and classy all the way. Glad I grew up watching him.
Long-time Red Sox fan here. Some great comments here (as usual, I'm years late to the party). Mo was the best there ever was, and one of the classiest guys to ever play the game. It's impossible to not respect somebody like Mo (and Jeter).
I'm a Yankees fan and I have to respect the Red Sox for this, this was great
I saw some comments on the papi farewell at yankee stadium where they complained about the Red Sox talking about Mo’s blown save. But this is classy, they were poking fun. And it should be that way, especially in a rivalry as fierce and competitive as the yanks and Sox. As an orioles fan, I tip my cap to both organizations, and especially to Mo and the rest of the greats from both teams. I love this.
BoSox, and this is coming from a lifelong Yankee fan, that was awesome. You really outdid yourselves with that tribute. For a minute there I thought Mo was on "The Price is Right" he got so much stuff! And giving him that 1932 Fenway seat.....PURE GENIUS! I hope we do the same for Big Papi in Yankee Stadium when he retires.
True dat.
We all know Papi isn't going make it to Cooperstown though :,( because for some reason the veterans committee hates DHs. It doesn't matter what he does he won't get in despite all those achievements.
Liam Flynn
After reading what you said I almost agreed with the thought that he might not get elected to the HOF. And yes, for whatever reason DH's are frowned upon. However, I looked at his numbers and he has a lifetime BA of just over 280. By the time he retires he will have close to or over 2,500 hits. Most importantly however, he will have over 500 home runs. That alone should get him inducted. Not to mention the playoff performances and clutch hitting. DH or not, if those numbers are not good enough then the HOF is worthless.
+Edward Aviles yes I totally agree . there are some position players that stink on the field but they get into the HOF anyway because of their bats, and hopefully by the time the 2016 season is over Papi should have at least 530 home runs which is more than I can say for some players . Also what about pitchers, they don't hit but plenty of them are in cooper's town!!!
@@Liamflynnphoto LOL Papi is going in first ballot. Dude's legend is enough to get him there.
Playing against the Yankees, you really only had 7-8 innings to win the game. It was always "We gotta score 1-2 runs before they get to Rivera!" So many times when he entered in the 8th or 9th, it was such a feeling of hopelessness..a "why even bother" mentality. He was truly lights out.
As a Sox fan win or loose that '04 series, this ceremony would of happened in his honor. Mo was a Yank that had great spirit, love, sportsmanship of this game we all Bo Sox fans respected. A true GIANT of the game that may never be seen again. Thank you Mario!
It's amazing to see the biggest rivalry in baseball embrace an awesome competitor. What class Red Sox!!!
Very classy of the Red Sox to honor Mo in such a way.
Thanks Red Sox! You showed a lot of class and respect for the greatest closer to ever play the game!
Sincerely,
A Yankees Fan
Thank you Mariano for playing the game the RIGHT way. - Sincerely sox fan
"Here comes my cutter, boys. I'm going to throw it on my first pitch to you, and on the second. I will throw that pitch alone until you make an out. Good luck trying to hit it."
This was his silent message to hitters for two freaking decades, and the hitters never figured out a way to hit it. We might never see another baseball player who was so dominating. Think about it this way... if he had an equally dominant offensive counterpart it would be someone who hits a homerun on almost every at bat.
Man. I miss this guy. I hope the Yankees make him a coach, or ambassador, or something so that he remains a Yankee forever. Thanks for the memories, Mo.
That's what was SO amazing about him. Everybody knew it was coming and for the most part couldn't hit it. I'll never forget how this skinny man was sawing off the Atlanta Braves bats in the World Series. All Chipper Jones could do was chuckle to himself in the dugout.
+crimdell >> From this Red Sox fan: That basically sums up Mo's great career... and all of it played with class, dignity and humility that earned him league-wide respect.
Mariano is all class, will always be respected and admired in Boston
Thank you, Boston. Right back at ya. What a rivalry during these years. Yankee fans rooted for you im when you went to the world series.
As a hardcore Red Sox fan all I can say is, Rivera is the greatest and most feared closer of all time. A legend of legends. Always class always fierce all business. I miss watching him operate.
I'm a diehard Jersey Yankee fan and really appreciate the respect from Boston fans regarding an obvious HOF candidate
As big of a rivalry these two teams are, they sure do have a deep respect for each other. That's so awesome too see
You know you are one of the greatest when the fans of you biggest rival stand up and gives you an ovation. LETS GO RED SOX!
As a Yankee fan from the days os Mel Stotlemeyer, Horace Clark, Tom Tresh, etc., I tip my hat to the class os the Boston Red Sox. Both of our cities have a passionate love for our team but at the end, its respect for the competition that binds us. I’ll probably get crucified for what I will say next but if the Yankees aren’t in contention, I will root for the Sox simply because they are a class organization
U know u are a man of God when even your rivals honor you. Great for MO :)
Class act
Big thank you to the Red Sox organization and all the Red Sox fans
That shows alot of class on the part of the Red Sox organization.
Mariano Rivera was the greatest closer to play the game. As a Yankees fan myself, I respect Mo as much as I respect my mom. He is very kind with a loving heart. His cutter was the best in the game. I wish Rivera a life of good luck.
Baseball needs more Rivera's.
Respect.
bill mueller is such class - very underrated career
A big thank you to the classy fans and entire organization of the Sox to honor one of the game's best.
One of the only Yankees that will EVER be that loved, respected and even be given a standing ovation at Fenway
Now that shows the class of not just Boston but all of baseball. Well done Red Sox!
Tried and true Yankee fan here Red Sox fans...after watching this I just have one thing to say to each and every one of you....
Thank you for honoring such a great man in Mariano Rivera. We may not agree on much of anything but there is one thing we can agree on...
Exit Sandman
Enter Hall of Fame
Thank you for your class Red Sox nation
As a member of the Boston Nation, Honor to who Honor deserves, to Mo Rivera, the greatest closer ever. May God Bless him!
This is the best rivalry in American sports. Hands down
The rivalry is what makes this so special. The Astros are going to honor Mo on Sunday for his last game, and they should, but how many times has Rivera played in Houston? The fact that the Red Sox have so many memories, good and bad, that involved Mo but still did this says a lot.
Thanks for posting MLB -- great to see that two great rivals can enjoy an occasion together and smile.
I love big papi. Idk if he’s asking the crowd to get louder or trying to get the audio fixed but I love his hand motions behind the podium
I’m missing baseball but it’s for the good of our people Isolate stay safe live another day
We're not just Yankee or Red Sox fans, we're also general baseball fans.
Very classy of the Red Sox and their fans. As much as the fan bases hate each other, I think both realize that baseball would be much more boring without the other. And the great players from both teams are worthy of respect.
Yanks couldn't ask for a more worthy rival than the Red Sox. From New York with Love! I love visiting Fenway--such authentic energy.
As much as I love football, I cannot see this happening where a team honors a player of rival team unless the player once played for them. This is very heartening to see in pro sports.
Beautiful. I remember the games. They were so intense.
Yankees and Red Sox in unity. Great day in sports history!
The few that actually plays the game the right way. You don't hear anything derogatory about him in the media.
The great Mariano Rivera. I hated him every time he came to close the 9th against the sox. A great human being. Blessings and success in all your endeavors Mo.
Probably the greatest Class Act video for MLB of all time.
Congrats Mo! Thank you for being such a role model for panamanians. I'm so proud!
I say this as a diehard Sox fan, he was the greatest. Hands down.
Wow that was totally awesome. That's great sportsmanship on the part of the Boston Red Socks.
I was there, love the roast part just because of the history of the franchises. Mariano Rivera is the best closer of all time and the only Yankee except maybe Jeter that I would ever give that reception to. He earned it.
I am a diehard Yankee fan and I am not too crazy about the Red Sox but they earned it in 2004. There was nothing wrong with talking about 2004. The Red Sox are a class organization and I tip my hat to them and their fans for showing such great class and respect in honoring Mariano Rivera. This is a great rivalry and I think the fans from both teams should try and emulate the class that the Yankees showed in the 2005 Opening Day ring ceremony and the class the Red Sox showed to Mariano.
We will miss you MO !!!!!!!!!!! Not just the Greatest Closers of all time. but one of the greatest Players of all time .
I also tip to the Yankees for their to Johnny Pesky when he passed away last season.
From a Red Sox fan.
Than anywhere else? I disagree there. But still much respect to all of the fans of Boston. You all continue to amaze me with the class that you have shown by giving respect to Derek Jeter(when he went down with the ankle in the '12 postseason) and for Mo this season. It just shows that true Red Sox fans know and love the history of the game and that is more important than a rivalry. As a die hard fan of the game and the Yankees, i have grown to have a lot of respect the nation over the last year
9:27 somebody is standing, wondering where the hell his seat went
lol
Immediately followed by "oh... AWESOME!"
or I just imagine someone getting a call "yes I wanted to tell you that you can no longer have season tickets. ...no no troubles or mistake ....sir, your seat doesn't exist anymore"
Lol
I was there as ! My First chance to watch a MLB game at the stadium. Never expected to be witnessing history.
That was awesome, thanks Boston.
such a classy thing for the Boston fans to do, we appreciate it so much!
This was really nice from the Red Sox!!! Mariano Rivera may God bless you!!!
Doesn't matter if these two teams are in the cellar in the standings in the AL East. Whenever they play it is a playoff atmosphere. Greatest rivalry and respect between 2 teams.
Good sportsmanship on Boston for this one.
You know your a legend when your arch rival gives you the respect you deserve.
