Amelia And JP VLOG 269: A trip to Cotacachi wouldn't be complete without a visit to Plaza de Ponchos, the world famous indigenous market in Otavalo, Ecuador!

We took a $6 cab ride from Cotacachi to the market on a Tuesday. The best day of the week to visit is on Saturday when they close off the streets and the market explodes to several times its normal size.
Unfortunately, Saturday was the only day we could film a real estate tour so we couldn't go to the market that day. Besides, we try to avoid large crowds when we're filming for a variety of reasons.

Did you move to Cotacachi
I'm going back home in December--after two years since my last visit. Otavalo is one of my mandatory stops. The last time I was there, I got this alpaca blanket, and it is the most comfortable cover to use on the couch during cold afternoons here in Seattle. I'm going back for at least two more this time! Thanks for helping me rediscover my country. I left 20 years ago when I was too young to appreciate it. You are changing that.

Thank you once again for such a wonderful video. This one also brought tears to my eyes, we lived in Otavalo for 3 1/2 years. It was Great seeing the market open once again. The pandemic shut it down completely. I often wondered and worried about the people that worked in the markets of how they were making a living.
Otavala also gave me Cuenca vibes! I love the jewelry and the shirt you guys bought. I miss Ecuador. Glad I have you two to watch! Gracias amigos!

I love Otavalo, I was there two years ago and then went to Quito and Cuenca. I hope to return to Ecuador in July 2022 again and spend more time. I'm thinking of going to Vilcabamba and stay at Madre Tierra after watching your video of your stay there.

I liked the video very much. The next time that you visit Otavalo, you have to visit Hacienda Cusin. A tourist from the U.S. said that the gardens looked like a slice of heaven. Make sure that you are shown the gardens behind the hacienda too. Also, one can film the western slope of Volcano Imbabura and one will be able to see the Heart of Imbabura. Another hacienda that would be interesting is Hacienda Pinsaqui. It has been in the family for over 300 years. Also check out the large, Lago de San Pablo.and eat lunch at the restaurant, Puerto Lago. The tour of the Indigenous Market at Otavalo was a home run!

I like that poncho with sleeves (which I have not seen before). I have 2 ponchos that I got in Ecuador which I still use.
Great memories - we took a day trip there from Quito in August. There is also a pretty lake (San Pedro) along the route from Quito.

Hi guys! Bonnie here. We really like Otavalo too. That mercado is the BEST! As always, you need to watch yourself carefully because of pickpockets, but no problem if you’re aware. I recognize the lady showing you the Llama blanket!! I bought a blanket from her a couple years ago! Its great to see the place again. I hope that our favorite coffee shop it still there… right across the street from the mercado, up some stairs.
Looks like you both are still really enjoying your life down in Ecuador. You both seem very happy.

I've been to Quito and many other places in Ecuador many times over my 59 years of life. My Ecudorian friend has seen the Otavola Indians in the subways in Paris. They are very enterprising.
You look great in that otavalo shirt JP....the indigenous can wear those light cotton shirts because the "pure wool poncho" comes over it and protects them from the cold.

If you go there on a Saturday, the main day for the mercado, it is very different. Lot's of people! It can be fun for some, but a little too much for others.

JP, if you want high quality Guayabera shirts in adult sizes there is a shop in Guayaquil that sells shirts that are made very professionally IN ECUADOR. I think my husband has at least 4 or 5 from Lord's... if I'm remembering the name of the shop correctly. The last time we were there I believe we paid around $37.50 plus IVA/VAT... that was in early 2019. Pricing a Guayabera in the US of similar quality will run you easily over $100.

We were just visiting for a week. It takes quite a bit of time to edit and publish our videos so they’re usually posted 2 or more weeks after we record them.

Love that you are showing other parts as well. I am very happy for you. The shirt is great, the poncho so original, and I would get the Inca calendar in a minute. Good choices. I was laughing when you mentioned 0 rain coats. I used to live in Guayaquil and never bother to blow dry my hair since they were dry by the time I got dress. One day we went to Quito , I packed my things as I was using home, in Quito, I took a shower and started to get ready as usual but my hair were still wet - different temperature and I was worried not to get sick . hahahahaha.
