Amelia And JP VLOG 271: When we were considering a move to Ecuador, Cotacachi was near the top of the list along with Cuenca and Loja.
However, back in 2016 when we were researching our move abroad, we couldn't find very much information about the neighborhoods and housing options around Cotacachi, which is why we wanted to record this video showing you where the expats like to live.
Our next video is a real estate tour showing some of the houses in a few of these areas so hit the subscribe button and like this video so RUclips recommends it to you!
You're not alone! We've assembled a supportive community with HUNDREDS of current and future expats who are eager to share their experiences, answer questions and provide guidance to help take the mystery out of your move. Join Us Today! / ameliaandjp

I really like the videos you two have done and I am so happy you see Cotacachi to be the fantastic place I do. You could not live any closer to center city than I do. I am 2 doors off the intersection of two main streets. Ten years ago, I waited 3 months, to get into the exact townhome, in an all Spanish area, in which I will probably reside until I drop dead. I have traveled the World to decide where my retiring years would be. Cotacachi won in 24 hours of stepping off the plane. There is not a more rewarding place to live and my neighbors are the kind for which everyone wishes. I spoke almost no Spanish and still am limited. They know I am here to stay. But I fear what the huge influx of U.S. expats can do. In escaping the U.S., they are bringing it with them. Most expats group together in walled onclaves and English-menu restaurants. They do not come here to get to know the people and the people realize that. One of the communities you show, with very nice homes, has an indigenous community right beside it and those indigenous people are not happy. They have physically acted out at times, along with police accompanying them. And, you usually only see grass growing on expat land. Grass takes water and has no purpose. It is a waste of water, just to have grass to make a pretty picture of your propery. A problem with expats in Ecuador. A native neighbor does not care how your casa looks, as the value is in the land, not the house. Since water is a problem World Wide, very few natives use water for anything that is not sustaining to life. With the melting of glaciers, streams and rivers not being what they used to be before the Cotacachi glacier died in 2007, water is scarce in many areas of Ecuador. I understand the need for most people to get out of the U.S., but you will ruin this beautiful country, if you do not leave the U.S. behind. When I left Fort Lauderdale 10 years ago, I sold a home in a private community with my own pool, a sports car, and 2 businesses. At 68, it was time to move on. I packed 2 suitcases, hopped on LATAM and never looked back. I realized at 68 that none of what I had was necessary for an enjoyable life. And, You are totally correct. Cotacachi has everything you could possibly need, all within walking distance. You will be happy beyond belief if you can leave your past behind. This is not the U.S. and I hope it never starts down that path. That would be very disappointing for many.
Marlee you so right darling, couldn't be more agree with you! ❤️
This is what happens when a nice place gets marketed to people in the West. They come in and bring their bad habits along. It takes time and effort to assimilate into a new culture. Americans are not the best at doing that. Austin, tX was a great place too until developers took over about 20 yrs. ago. It's a mess now and even locals are moving out.
A bathtub and dishwasher are completely unnecessary, as well. I live in Florida, currently, and nobody has a dishwasher where I am, because Florida often has droughts and forest fires. I have never used a dishwasher in this state, in fact. I lived in Bolivia, and each family with money had a woman do the washing, in the sink. That would be a much more integrative, and environmentally friendly way to support the local community.
Please in Cotachi are not short of water. Rains enough. Thececuadorian are not use to hace flores well cultivate in the garden. I am ecuadorian and I Know, pks don't make a drama. garde
You said it beautifully
Why would anyone give a thumbs down to this video...Goes to show you you can't fix stupid!!,, Great job Amelia and JP.
Dammit!! Your videos make me want to move so bad. The politics here in the US are getting so toxic we would love to live somewhere quiet and beautiful. I need to plan a trip to check it out in person. Thanks!
Before you do, look into the Francesca Williams-37. Before she was the victim of a home robbery/invasion she posted about her concerns on Quora in What are the major stereotypes people have about Ecuador and to what extent are they true?. It's an eye opening story that is never told by the Travel Marketers/RUclipsrs.

We agree! :)
That's my dog Lovey running through the video of Sisa Pacha.
I loved so much how you enjoy my beautiful home country. It’s so wonderful to see you guys appreciate the beauty of every place you go in Ecuador. We hope we can meet you in person this coming December that we are planning to go to my beautiful country.

Thank you Amelia and JP for showing the wonderful videos of Cotochachi 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I love Cotacachi even more after watching this video, thanks for posting.
Wow!! Beautiful views, thank you for sharing your journey! Can’t wait for the next video.
Well done! We were there all of September and moving there early December! We shared your video with all of friends in Cotacachi. Love the drone shots!
Oh my what a gem! Leather capital beauty! Thank you for sharing such a beautiful area. I was lucky to visit Cotacachi a few years ago - great memories!
Beautiful neighborhoods and homes. I can’t wait to see the real estate piece you’re putting together.
Extremely helpful video for new expats, thank you for making this valuable content. I've spent a lot of time in Colombia and Peru but not Ecuador yet.
Love, love Cotacachi! One of my favorite places to visit!
Absolutely awesome Amelia & JP, like you it was super hard finding info about Cotacachi and you guys blew this out of the water. This area just went back to the top of my list, can't wait to see the upcoming property video. You guys rock :-) Hey can you include what the weather is like there, is it like Cuenca, cloudy, chilly nights etc. ?
Thank you for this video! I’ve been to Ecuador a few times and love it. Love the people too. It has so much to offer and affordable too. Your presentation was excellent! Didn’t even know there are communities like these. Would’ve love to know the price range, please. I’m considering Ecuador for retirement. Please keep showing these videos. I’m subscribing right now!!!
This video pretty much tipped the scles for me in favor of Cotachaci/Otavalo/Ybarra. THANK YOU!!
This video was very helpful since me and my husband are planning to retire somewhere in the highlands of Ecuador because we dislike hot weather. Cotacachi is in our list. Thank you both for these videos, I like your personalities.
Love your vids , can’t wait for next one 😀😀😀♥️♥️♥️
Gracias! 😊👍
Incredible! We really appreciate you all creating and sharing this content! Cotacachi looks so beautiful, it's definitely on our "must visit" for our exploratory trip. Thank you! Hope to see you soon!
Beautiful 😍 thank you for sharing
Another super helpful and enjoyable video. The language app sounds like a good recommendation. Thanks for all you do.
Happy to help!
Thank you for this wonderful episode. It was the first area I thought to see for a possible future home. But then I started to think more Villcabamba. I see your love for the coast too, but think it's easy to visit the ocean whenever I like. Thank you so much JP y Amelia for all your wonderful y informative vlogs.
Vilca is overrated and full of crazy expats who think they run the place. Cota's people are so much nicer.
Loved your cotachi report . I have to see it next time I travel there.
next time maybe explain shortly where Cotacachi is located and a few basic things about the town, where closest airport also, etc. Thanks!
They did on the first video on cota that they released a week or two ago.
Great video for sure. I am going to look into your guide to moving to Ecuador
Please do!
We are looking at Cotacachi for retirement in the next few years.... and coming from COS, CO, we love hearing your comparisons. Thanks so much for your insight.
Glad it was helpful!
Really loved this video, seeing the neighborhoods was very informative! I saved this video to refer to in the future when I'm closer to retirement! 😁 Thank you for all your work for us ! 👍❤

Thanks for the insightful comments. I was sold at 4.35 with the yellow 🏵 rose, I do have weakness for yellow roses. It was very informative to explore the differents Barrios.. it seems to me the quality of life is top-notch in this hidden paradise.

Hi wonderful couple! I am from Ibarra. Very welcome to my provincia de Imbabura ♥️! I am thrilled watching your content. I had no idea this exists in Cotacachi! On my next visit, I will check it out! Enjoy the pure air and the weather down there! Saludos desde California!!🌈

Love our videos! Enerything looks wonderful. Only I wonder, does the sun ever shine?
Hi, People of the Unconventional Life. Thanks for the information about Cotacachi. It is a good city in Ecuador. I believe that it is also very quiet, friendly and it has the fresh climate of the Andes mountain.
Q: How is the drinking water in Cotacachi compared to Cuenca?
Like so many others, Thank you for taking the time and energy to produce these videos. Very Helpful. Blessings!
Thanks guys, when i retire am going to Ecuador.
❤❤ What a great video. Can't wait to hear about pricing when it comes to real estate. I Have to confess, I'm ready to book a Flight !! Icredible views. Gracias

I’ve been to Cotacachi a few times. Great place for leather goods!
So been watching many of you videos. And thinking about moving from us. But having a hard time figuring out on a map most of the city's and towns your talking about.
Nice Video 🌺 thanks ☀️
Oooooo Amelia, I love your dress!!! You look so pretty
Oh thanks!
Very well informed,, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I own a home in Sisa Pacha and have lived here for 81/2 years. We are in the outskirts of Otavalo and pay our property taxes there. But, it is a shorter drive to downtown Cotacachi than Otavalo.
A very information video about Cotacachi. I didn't see as many street animals that I did in other videos. Perhaps there are, but hidden. I'm coming to Ecuador on the 29 of Nov. I'll start in Cuenca, but then who knows. No fixed plans. I enjoy Damian because he's hilarious 'muchachos'.
Enjoy your trip!
I like that you make the effort of showing some street footage in your videos. Really gives a rhythm to the whole thing.
Glad you like them!
Sooooo tempting.
Number 4 is really nice. Reminds me of a Phoenix houses
Great content my wife and I love watching your videos. Thank u.
We are planning to visit Ecuador beginning of year to become residents. I want to begin applying for residency now. But from my understanding I need to have a place of residence before applying. So I guess we will come for 3 months find a temporary residence then ill go back to U.S. to begin the residency process.
Am I doing this correctly?
Great video, would love to see rental properties and prices in Cota? Also, is the weather&temps about the same as Cuenca?
We only filmed for sale properties on this trip. We’ll try to do a for rent on the next one, but you can rent in all these neighborhoods.
great again!
Gracias!
Good one. We’re def getting out of Dodge and Cotacachi looks very nice. Only caveat being the contrived sterile gated houses. I can’t imagine living in such a fake place. The centro looks awesome.
Cotacachi is beautiful, mystical, it is the hottest place for UFO sightings in Ecuador.
Beautiful!
It's really beautiful in Cotacachi!
What an eye opening video! I was wondering if there are ample vegan / vegan option restaurants in this city?
There were lots of vegan options!
Thank you both, I am also from Evergreen CO.
I was in Panama and Loved Boquete, retired with SS, and work pt. I only get $1290.00 a month due to early retirement. I am presently in St Petersburg Florida and this is my last year here. The prices are crazy and I am not a fan of Florida at all. When flying into Ecuador where do you suggest flying into? I would like to explore the areas that you showed in the video. Great information, Thank you !!!!
My two favorite Gen X-Plorers. For those of us that prefer a cooler climate, is this area the best in Ecuador?
Great video Thank U both so much! I am a Retired military planing to scout Ecuador with my wife around August to Nov. Hope to contact you guys to see how u can help us🙏🙏
The only drawback to Ecuador I see is that is seems to always be cloudy. I understand it because of the rain forest. But still cloudy. I would defiantly need to spend some time there in order to determine if is the place for me. I live near Boston - it is cloudy from October until march much of the time. It is not fun not seeing the sun for weeks at a time.
Amelia and JP you should make a video on the state of emergency declared by the President of Ecouator, the manifestation in many city, the road block impossible for some tourist to move from Quito to other area and the peace for this W/E by the indigenious till the president comes back after october week end fest. THIS IS REAL !!!! What do you think ????
Wow, I am going to giai Sagrada the 26th of this month (November) we land at Quito then short flight to cuenca are we going to have any troubles… ayahuasca retreat
@@ronniebaker7782 no really you can check the last news with your embassy if you have some especific questions
Ecuador is a country made up of an indigenous majority. This past election, a Western businessman won the election by 1%. The reality of Ecuador is like that of Panama and many other Central American countries. A class struggle between indigenous and Western populations. Any Westerner who moves to these places without knowing their historical background, deserves any inconvenience that they may experience. Ignorance is not bliss, regardless of what the United States public school system tells you.

Thanks so much. I am planning to sell my boat that I have lived on for 6 enjoyable years and move to more adventures. I will visit this area and explore the possibility of living there.
Best of luck!
Thank you!
You bet!
I follow your videos and I think I will be relocating to Ecuador in the future. I scour Google earth to help select locations. 1 thing I don't see is wastewater treatment plants. I know the freshwater comes from the mountains. And yeah you cannot drink the tap water. But where does the toilet water go? I have seen in some Peru videos where the sewage gets routed to lakes and drinking water also comes from these same lakes. I don't want to swim in clear mountain toilet water.
In Guayaquil, they have a wastewater treatment plant but it is not on the river proper. It's close several blocks away but it doesn't really look like a treatment center either.
Hello Emilia and JP.
You have featured some nice areas to live in this video I've heard that when using toilets in Ecuadore your exspected to put the toilet paper in a bin, do you know if you have to put toilet paper in a bin in the newer homes you featured in this video do you need to do this in some of the major Hotels in Cuenca? This is putting me of from spending five months in Ecuadore. It would be great if I can rent a room in the San Miguel area you featured in this video. I don't drive so it would be nice to live near public transport.
I want to come to Ecuado to get a lot of Dental Treatment done at the Dental Practace you've featured in another video.
It would be nice if you show a more map, it's hard to tell where san miguel as an example. Is it in the highlands or the Amazon? Thanks
Cotachaci looks like a lovely little town. What is the population?
You mentioned CBD oil for your back. Is that topical and does it work for arthritis in the spine. I have very bad arthritis in my lower back and am having to take anti-inflammatory (Ibuprofine) for it.
What would recommend for long term rentals?
Oh, man. Cows eating the grass on the streets. I haven't seen that in sooooo long! When I was growing up in Quito, they were everywhere. Any grass, road dividers, sidewalks, etc. It was all fair game for the cows.
I lived in a place is that is well-developed now, but it wasn't back then. What now is high rise row used to be all "potrero." Not only would cows eat there, but the indigenous would also collect their dung for fuel and other needs. Now, you can only see that stuff in documentaries, or little towns like Cotacachi. :)
I'm also shocked at how much Cotacachi has grown!
We love seeing the cows munching on grass around town 😊
Me encanta el frio creo por eso he podido vivir 40 primavera en USA.
Gated communities...really blending in with the locals...
What kind of range is there in prices of these places please ?
Would Cotacotchi be more or less expensive than Cuenca ?
Thx !
Yes beautiful..like La Palma or Hawaii---.but when was the last time the volcanoes erupted and are they likely again?...Nice leopard dress!!!
Is it easy to find computer equipment and the like? or do you order that and have it delivered internationally?
We talked about that here: liveabroadnow.com/what-special-items-should-i-bring-to-ecuador/
JP...did you have any trouble with the altitude?
The elevation is definitely a factor to consider. I lived in Cotacachi for 28 months (2014-2016). I lost four expat friends due to heart attacks.
Are you going to visit and do a video from Guayllabamba ??
I plan to go there when I come back in a few months and I don't believe you guys ever visited there or at least did a video from there.
Was actually very little out there on RUclips in English except one gentleman who seems to hate everything about most places that he visits in Ecuador.
Except Guayllabamba ... So that got me interested
I watched a video where you talked about teaching English online? But now I can't find it.. I think the website started with a "C".. can't remember now
Are you guys real estate agents? We are thinking of going this summer to take a look.
We are not, but we can introduce you to a trustworthy real estate agent in Ecuador. More info here: liveabroadnow.com/referrals/ecuador-real-estate-agent-referral/
We love your videos and knowledge you are sharing with us all. I'm hungry for content for those expats who are looking to get away from the comfortable life we lived in the States. Cheaper prices, homes that don't fit the United States mold. You know, the good the bad and the ugly. Ha!
What mold? You mean the millionaire's mansion next to the falling down trailer home? Or the gated community on the outside lane of an Interstate highway? How about a homeless encampment right in the middle of the sidewalk of a middle-class neighbhorhood? You don't need to travel abroad, you have the good, the bad and the ugly right here in the USA. Just get in your car and leave your driveway.
@@chasca23 I see that every day. We were given this world to enjoy all of it. I intend to do just that.
