*********** My husband is one of your Patreons. He sent me a vidoeo of yours to watch once and now I am hooked on watching all your videos. I just want to say a Big Thank You! For all the info you freely give on pros and cons of living there. You are so informative and I so appreciate the time and effort it takes for you to put together your videos and show us so many different places to see in Ecuador. THANK YOU!!! I'm so happy for you that you get to enjoy that country and I sure hope we can at least visit it sometime. Have a Great Day!!! **********
LIKE MOST PLACES, there are pros & cons everywhere. Our niece is hoping to retire abroad - and asked us about living as an expat. We advised her to learn Spanish (she was considering Costa Rica) - but she thought that would be unlikely due to her age. Then, we suggested Belize or the US Virgen Islands, where English is the official language - but she thought island weather would be too hot, and Belize would be too "foreign". SO, we gave up giving advice. Seems like "pros & cons" START with YOU - you have to be flexible !
Cotacachi used to be famous for the leather goods that are produced there. People went to Cotacachai to buy a high quality leather clothes (great jackets) and other leather articles. In the video I saw a sign on a wall which said "Talabartería", so I guess they are still working the leather.
I lived in Colorado at 9500 feet above sea level, in Central City. Living up in the mountains is nice. I’d love to live in Ecuador, and small towns are preferred.
That sounds wonderful. I'm a coffee junkie while my son and his fiance really enjoy hiking or walking around cities taking in the scenery. They are a cute couple who are real foodies. They are both remote workers while I'm retired. We haven't decided for sure whether to move out of the United States or not.

The more I see your videos, the more I like you and trust you. Your information is very useful for me and my husband that are just a year away from retirement in Ecuador. I am Ecuadorian who have lived abroad for 43 years....it's time to go back and fortunally my foreign husband loves my country. We like the high lands, so we are considering some places like Cotacachi. Thank you sooo much!

Although it's not celebrated in Ecuador, have a happy Thanksgiving guys. I know by personal experience that this is the season of the year when immigrants "expats" miss home. As an Ecuadorian living in the USA, I wish to be there for the upcoming festivities. God bless.
I lived in Quito for 3 years, which is 9500 feet above sea level, so elevation-wise, Cotacachi felt “normal” in comparison whenever I would visit there.

Out of all the places you've shown us, Cotacachi appeals to me the most. I live at about 6,000 feet, near some foothills in Southern Colorado, so should be able to adapt to Cotacachi altitude. I have considered Uruguay, but then found out there are no mountains! I would miss them too much.
Hi guys Are you planning on visiting Vilcabamba? Seems like another great place to live but a bit warmer then other higher elevation towns and cities. Hope all is well...Steve
@@AmeliaAndJP I noticed one of your videos after I sent you that inquiry LOL Working on my temporary Visa as I Left My heart in Manta. It was really great seeing you guys Took a while to get over my celebrity crush.
I decided against it because of the elevation and complicated access to a good hospital. They take you from Cota's hospital, to Ibarra and if it's bad, they send you all the way back to a hospital in Quito. If you are in heart distress, you could die in transit with all the moving around in the wrong direction instead of going straight to Quito in the first place. Also some of the established expats are territorial and overbhearing. Many are nice, but I got a bad taste from a few who seemed to think they were large and in charge. I decided to move somewhere with a less established expat community.
JP is so funny , how cute, he always throws Amelia under the bus with the hot flashes situation , and Amelia is so sweet to just let him say it...I'll be honey can you not mention the hot flash part.🤣😅
Funny hearing about the restaurants closing early because the locals don't frequent them after 8:30 PM. I saw the opposite in most of my travels in Ec. While living in Cuenca, we old gringo's would usually pack it up around 7:30 at night. At a very popular eatery, Fabiano's, we'd be leaving and large family groups would be packing the place . Even work / school nights, whole families would be trekking in after 8:00 P.M. It got to the point we gringos felt quilty staying after 7:00, as if we were infringing on the indigenous folks.
That's very true in every other place we've been in EC! Cotacachi is the first place we've been to where the locals go to bed early, but it has a very large indigenous farming community so I'm guessing they get up early to work.
@@AmeliaAndJP And, I hope I didn't give the wrong impression with the feeling of guilt for staying later. The locals never gave off that vibe. They are so polite they would never do that. It was strictly on us. Enjoy your informative channel, been following you both for years. Happy Thanksgiving.
Great video... I bought some property there a couple of years ago and plan to start building our retirement home this summer. JP... Have you ever thought about having a video about some stories/background of some photos you have taken while showcasing the images throughout the vid? Just an idea... I hope you and Amelia have a wonderful New Year!

May I ask where you folks are headed in MX? I’ve been looking at cabo but it seems pricey for sure. Flying down next week to look at a few condos but I feel it’s going to be more of a vacation than actually buying something
@@robjohnson7878 We both prefer cool weather, and we speak Spanish so we crossed off beach cities and expat enclaves. I think Cotacachi is beautiful! However I'm worried about two things. The altitude and the distance for medical care. We will be going there and Otavalo on our exploratory trip, so we shall see. March can't get here soon enough!
Hi Nancy! I'm looking at Cotacachi as a possible place to stay for a few months this winter (2022) and I'm concerned about the altitude, as well. I hope you don't mind me asking, but did you have issues with altitude sickness on your exploratory trip? Thanks!

You are taxed by the US government because your employer is US-based. It's called tax on foreign based income. Just pay your taxes to the IRS like usual. You don't have to pay taxes in Ecuador on US-based income, but don't expect to be tax free.

Casi todas las ciudades de la Sierra ecuatoriana son hermosos seguras y limpias y esto se debe a la estricta cultura por parte de las comunidades indígenas.
Enjoying your videos of various cities, towns and villages. I am thinking of relocating there at least part of the year. Tennis is a big part of my physical and mental exercise routine here in south fl but increasingly with my age and climate change the summers are becoming intolerable. I have seen many other accounts of areas there and am waiting to here of some semblance of a tennis society. I'm sure there are many private or gated communities with courts on site but do you have any knowledge of public courts or information on tennis membership costs in private (open) centers. Further, I would love to locate to 5000-7000 foot small town that would be close enough to commute to one of the larger cities along the Andes range. If you or any of your viewers have any ideas in this regard I would greatly appreciate your help in narrowing down the places I might spend time visiting (hopefully next year) !
Can you guys please do a video on the local religious options - ie are certain types of churches more prevalent in certain areas? Do locals in some places seem more active and interested in religious life than in other places?
Ecuador, is 90%+ Catholic, the other 10% is mostly protestant. Ecuadorian Catholics are very religious, however they don't try to convince anyone to turn Catholic, people are very respectful, and religion is rarely a subject people talk about.
Amelia - I'm looking for a sweater/shawl like you bought in Otavalo. On the very off-chance that you know, is there any outlet in the US or seller from Ecuador from whom I could buy one of these for my mother for Christmas?
I'm assuming you mean the Internet access. It's the same throughout Ecuador, which means if you pay for a cheap plan, you get slow Internet access, which is what our AirBnB host had. It was frustrating. However, the Brick House we featured in the real estate video ran a speed test for us and he got the full 75Mb upload and download speeds that he was paying for. We didn't try the free public WiFi that's available in most parks throughout EC, but they're usually slow and only available during the day. There is also WiFi available at most restaurants for paying customers.
I would really appreciate a nice in depth video on the weather in Quito. I understand you can basically set your clock to about 60s in the day to 40s at night. All year around. But what I am interested in is the extremes. How many freezing nights or nights dip into at least into the 30s? Strong wind, melancholic days. Sleet? Ice? Snow even? I know there is hail.
Living 8n Quito for 10 months now, no snow. No really freezing g temperatures but it's not warm either. On days when it is sunny 2-4 days a weeks depending on time of year, it can be warm, in the sun. The good thing is busses run from here all the time to warmer places. I rode the nicest bus I've ever seen for a weekend to Santo Domingo, a short drive, more tropical climate. $5 / person.
Please let your viewers know that if they go as tourists, take plenty of cash, no bank in the city does currency exchange. And also, don’t use anything bigger than a $20 note. When I went there in 2019, I tried using both $50 and $100 notes. Not a single store had change for it.
We've been in Cuenca for over seven years now, and I really enjoy your videos. They always seem spot on. Cotacachi is indeed a wonderful village. One of the advantages of a village is that people know each other. I grew up in a small German speaking village of 2,000 people. One of the people was nicknamed "Chicken Thief Mayer", somehow we knew to avoid him . . . Since we want quick access to highly skilled medical care and drinkable tap water we settled in Cuenca. Nonetheless, small towns do have many charms.
@@SenorJuan2023 There is indeed quite a bit of rain. There is a rainy season and a drier season. You can check climate statistics on the internet for historical averages. Overall, it is pretty common throughout the Sierra region to have some rain on many days. It happens more in the mid-afternoon onward than in the mornings. And, I'd say most days have some sun too! I love cool weather (year-round!) and mountains. But, everyone has different things that they enjoy. Many find the Sierra to be cold. My suggestion, research online (with a pretty big grain of salt), figure out what sounds good for you, and then try a short visit. When you find an area which seems very promising, spend several months there before you move. Despite all of your research, you'll discover things that are upsetting and utterly charming things.
@@Marcus935OS I like cool, dry weather. The only possible negative about Cuenca (from what I've read) seems to be the rain. There are other places in South America I'm considering as well.

Amelia is so gorgeous!
Name of the song at the end of the video, please.
It looks peaceful. The weather? How is it?
It's very peaceful there! The weather is cool and cloudy, very similar to Cuenca.
Sooo pretty- so want to go here, just need to get around the poison dart mandates xo
Happy Thanksgiving
Same to you!
Are u guys from Denver?
I live on front range south of there
Yes. We lived in Denver before we moved to EC.
What is the golfing like down that way
Nicely done!
Amelia - I'm looking for a sweater/shawl like you bought in Otavalo. On the very off-chance that you know, is there any outlet in the US or seller from Ecuador from whom I could buy one of these for my mother for Christmas?
How does Cotachi's temperature and rain differ from Vilcabamba? Thank you.
How was the wifi in Cotocachi?
I'm assuming you mean the Internet access. It's the same throughout Ecuador, which means if you pay for a cheap plan, you get slow Internet access, which is what our AirBnB host had. It was frustrating. However, the Brick House we featured in the real estate video ran a speed test for us and he got the full 75Mb upload and download speeds that he was paying for. We didn't try the free public WiFi that's available in most parks throughout EC, but they're usually slow and only available during the day. There is also WiFi available at most restaurants for paying customers.
Ty, how about Netflix? I'm assuming its everywhere?? In English?
Does Cotacachi have nearby Hot Springs? For people to soak in!? 😁👋🏻
Love the Vegan food !!!
We say that a lot. A $100 bill on a Sunday is the same as being broke! 😂
I heard Cuenca gets a fair amount of rain. If true, is it seasonal or on a consistent basis?
@@Marcus935OS Thanks.
What is the elevation?
Don't let this video fouls you they always a catch to it and not all true
I am looking to visit/move to Cotacachi soon. Does Ecuador have residency restrictions on working ? I am a massage therapist
