Ecuador seems right for me in a few years, medical is my hesitation and being able to get the medication I have needed to function.....JP's back looks like it is treating him fairly, has the weather helped at all with that? Do you bulk buy vitamins online?
For a couple's retirement visa, do you need to have the $600/month proof of health insurance, or can you wait until you qualify for Equidor's health plan? secondly, what is "schedule" as mentioned by JP @ timestamp 4:52 "temporary residency and your schedule" thank you so much!
I heard the minimum income requirement for retirement visa in Ecuador is $ 1,275.

My monthly expenses are easily 1/3 the cost of Texas/USA. Also, I find the Ecuadorian people are kind, respectful and compliant even in these pandemic times. Am proud of this little country and grateful for allowing me a permanent resident visa.

I got a deep cut on my foot recently that required stiches. After sending me home from the ER my wound got infected. I went back and spent the night in the hospital having an IV drip of antibiotics to stop the infection. The hospital billed my insurance company $42,000 ! I had to pay 10% after a $4000 deductible. Healthcare in the US is highway robbery.
I live in the UK and we are so lucky. There is no cost at all. We all pay a bit higher taxes but healthcare is free and some dentisty is subsidised. A tooth extraction or filling for example is under $100
Equador does sound like a fantastic place.
I have a cousin that died from poor care here locally in the US. She went to the ER 6 times in a month and the last time she went to emergency surgery and died.. US healthcare is declining. I work in healthcare and I can say that truthfully...

I work in a major hospital in Miami and the elites of Ecuador as well as others from throughout Latin America and Canada come here for their major medical surgeries.
My wife often says how she wants to live near a beach. Ecuador sounds perfect, but we have small grandchildren and she wants to be near then too. Maybe in another 10 years when they aren't cute anymore. ;-)

Use those 10 years to become fluent in Spanish. (500 million people worldwide).
How often do you see the grandkids? We have six going on seven. We see them on avg once a year because the closest is seven hours. They would probably jump at visiting us in Ecuador - you know the equity inclusion mentality of our kids
@@mikedhsr007 We see my grandson a few times a week since he lives in town. My grand daughter lives about three hours away and we see her a couple of times a month. As far as visits, I'm not so sure. We lived in Germany for about 6 years and only three people visited in all that time.

I stayed in Ibarra as a single person and the cost seemed considerably less than they quoted, though good to be conservative, I guess. I think it's quite comfortable at $800, likely less. Most of the fancy gated houses were $300-350/mo, but they were unfurnished. I split the rent with a friend that already had an established home like that. Whenever I went shopping at the supermarkets, which I did maybe once a week or less often cus it was a hassle just cus it was a new experience, I bought what I thought was a lot, and I was always in disbelief when the cashier said it was like $40-50. Besides, I had a grocery roller bag stuffed and stacked to the max, carried plastic bags in my hand, and I simply couldn't carry more home in a taxi at one time. Ecuador was the first trip I had money left over when I came back to the US.
You guys are spot on for monthly expenses. I think since we live in Crucita we do spend about $50 more than what you budgeted for taxi back and forth to Porto Viejo and Manta. If you own your own house you can easily live here for $1,600 a month, Great video

Thank you so much! I am learning Spanish and deflated to hear of the changes and chaotic implementation of Mexico’s evolving immigration requirements. It sounds like Ecuador is not only an alternative to Mexico for retirement, but preferred.
I'm hoping to take a trip there soon. My wife is leaning towards Spain but it's almost as expensive as here in Ohio. I would love to live in the mountains. Cotacachi looks charming.
Cotacachi is also very affordable!
One thing I really miss about Ecuador are the fabulous soups. When I worked at the U.S. Embassy, the Embassy cafeteria used to offer soup every day with the meal. I always got soup because it was so delicious. The other thing is the awesome food at the beachside restaurants on the coast.
I am glad to hear that Ecuador is just as affordable as it was years ago when I spent a year in Guayaquil.

Thanks for this very informative video! One thing I want to point out is that in your comment about inter-provincial bus fares (and so many other situations), people over 65, maybe even 60, are what are called "tercera edad" (third age), basically seniors. That gives them 50% off of many things there.... like the normal bus fare between Cuenca and Guayaquil is $8, but with tercera edad it is only $4! Tercera edad qualifies one for 50% off of electric and water bills, if the bill is in their name, not that of a landlord. Anyway, I just wanted to point this out, it can be a big advantage for "senior citizens" living there!

Great video! I really like how you refer to Cuenca as Cruise Cuenca...it's true! When I was there for two weeks in July of 2018, I was busy having fun pretty much all the time. I had made connections before hand...at least for volunteering opportunities. But, it's easy to make new friends there. Also, I've thought a lot about the financial requirement differences for immigration in Ecuador and Mexico. You're right about Mexico requiring about $2K a month income...( & it goes up every year) for temporary residency. As for the perpetual tourist visa...that is ending. You are also now required to carry original passports and official documents with you at all times so they can make sure you are not overstaying and/or taking advantage of the tourist visa. With the $2K requirement minimum for temp. residency, I feel like you're a walking target now for those who might be wanting some of your wealth. In Ecuador, with the minimum being $400 a month for residency...who knows? Take care! Thanks!

As someone who lives near Quito, I can attest that this is a very accurate video. I think the amounts they quoted are very conservative since I live on much less. Of course, I have an Ecuadorian girlfriend who helped me tremendously. I live more like a local so I save money that way. For most Americans the issue is not going to be money, it's going to be culture shock and social isolation. Especially if you are married and have kids and grandkids in the US then you might not last long in Ecuador.

My plan is to escape Canadian winters for a 6 month period, then return to Canada. Our spring, summer and fall are beautiful here. I spent a year in the Yukon away from my kids and grandchildren, it is hard but the internet makes it easier to keep in touch. Of course it's not the same as being there, but my kids love traveling. I have a feeling I will be getting a lot of visits from them LOL. The problem will be trying to get rid of them hehe.
That's why being near other Americans for tips, socialization and camaraderie is helpful. In Cuenca there is a huge expat community. Not sure about the other cities though.

Every video you produce moves me further towards making moving to Ecuador my goal! I'm a single woman at close to retirement age, and I don't want to have to work until I'm 67. I visited Ecuador in 2019, and I was enchanted with the culture. I'm hoping that social security will work for me to be able to afford a lifestyle that is comfortable in Ecuador!
You can have it, life is cheap, depending on the city where you move will depend on how safe it is, normally high cities are safe, I live in Galapagos and here there are many expats although first they must have Ecuadorian residence to live there

Definitely you will enjoy early retirement in a low budget country as an expat. At 62 you'll forgo about 30% of you SS benefit but life is more than money. Best of luck
Retirees can also choose to receive their benefits paid to the DirectExpress prepaid debit card. There are no fees when requesting cash at a teller window in a bank outside the US. However, fees are applied, like use at an ATM or using the card at a merchant outside the US.
Yes, I have the SS Direct Express Card and heard it works well abroad.
@@MG-otg I have read that a free Charles Schwab account is the way to go for fee free access as an add on in this case.
Been in Cuenca since 2010, and at that time I had an income of $1,650+ per month. At that time I was single and there was no health insurance prerequisite for my rentista visa. Now that I’m married to a Cuencana, I pay into her Social Sevurity (Ecuadorian) and she adds me to her health insurance plan. A $100 per month, and it’s a win/win. She gets her retirement benefits, health insurance benefits, and I get a cheap ride on the health insurance. My cedula expires in 2025, and I know I’ll have to show proof at that point. And with my Spanish speaking facilitator wife, it’s a breeze. Work the system.

The cost of living varies considerably depending on where you live. I live near a small, nearly expat empty city of Riobamba. $500 rent will get you much more here. 2 years ago we looked at a 5 bedroom fully furnished house for that price. It was new and modern. Ultimately rented a small 3 bedroom 2.5 bath town house in a gated community for $250. Since then, we have built. The expat heavy areas tend to cost more.
You are living the life I want to live if I make it to Ecuador. Expat empty sounds fine to me.
What is the name of the gated community? We also don't enjoy living around too many expats here in Fiji and are looking to make the shift over to Ecuador in the new year. Looking for a smaller city with decent public schools for the kids.
@@tyrelmcallister3634 There are many in Riobamba. That one is called Pradero 1. Riobamba is like spring and fall in the eastern US, but year around.

I would like to be able to either work or volunteer at one. I took a 3 month 'trial retirement' and went nuts... So I went back to work.. gotta have something to do!! We hope to retire in 8-10 months and start very slowly traveling from Mexico to Gustemala, to Nicaragua, to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru…..over 3-5 years.
We’ll be looking for cool weather cities only.
We speak Spanish and have lived abroad before. We are retiring early (55 and 60) so a couple years out of pocket, then 5 years with the first SS check of $1800/mo before the 2nd SS check starts.
Cost of living depends a lot on the country and the city. According to Numbeo , Colombia will be the cheapest at about a 35% discount from Ecuador….looking at Río Negro and Manizales. Lots of really great places to explore !

What a great video, regarding food when You are at mercados , for us as locals is very common to ask for YAPA, basically the seller gives you a bit more of the product they sell, however to ask for YAPA You have to speak spanish.

With 1800 you reach and spare, you can rent something in 300 dollars, and you have 1500 leftover, the. Food will cost you 300 a month, you have 1200 left, you spend 100 on electricity, Internet, pay TV, you have 1100 left, you pay 70 dollars for social security and you have 1000 a month left to save hehe

I live in China with my wife. Married to a Chinese citizen, I can easily get renewable residence permits every 3 years. But if something were to happen to her, I expect it would be difficult to stay. It's good to know that there's an affordable alternative to moving back to the states.

I am very intersted in moving as an expat to Ecuador and greatly appreciate yout RUclips videos and/or channel. I was considering Medellin but the crime rate is higher than what they profess on RUclips videos and it is cheaper there than in Cuenca, but the expat community seems more wholesome and I got immediate feedback on their noon, English speaking, AA meetings which occur everyday (important to me). I am a retired English teacher and make about $3200, after insurance and taxes. I would like to live on $1000.00 a month so I can plan travel adventures. I am still studying the economies and costs of living around Latin America, but am very excited to make the change and begin a newer life in Ecuador. I starting to believe Cuenca to be my better choice. Thank you, LOL Doug Coleman
On your income you would be able to live very well indeed in Cuenca, but your idea of using Cuenca as an economical pied a terre base to explore Latin America is an excellent one. Agree Cuenca expat community may be more 'wholesome' than Medellin. Airline prices for tickets between South American countries are surprisingly high, so it could be more economical to sometimes use discount airlines to fly back to hubs in the USA. Also with an Ecuador temporary residency permit, you need to be sure that you are not exceeding limits on time spent out of the country. Visa rules have recently changed and seem to be unclear or disputed at the present time. Some visa advisors say that you can now spend unlimited time out of the country, but my (recently issued) visa says in writing that the limit is 90 days per calendar year. By the time you make your decision the issue will probably be clearer.

Hi guys, thanks for the information, I've been following you for a while now. I'm just a few years away from early retirement and started to compare Mexico to Manta. Many of your videos touch on the topics I'm concerned with but I'm having trouble visualizing the social life. Can you do a video that gets more into the social life in that area? Where do the expats and locals hang out? What do the fiestas look like? Mexico has a square where most of the community gets together and they have parades, music is in the air and expats regularly get together to chat or listen to music. Do they have things like that in Manta? Maybe you can video tape some of those events or show what those events look like. Keep making those awesome videos. :)

Enjoyed your video, but expats should not purchase a home until they've lived there for at least two or three years. For example, if you had purchased a home in Cuenca, your move to the coast would have been much more complicated, or you might have been stuck there. Renting provides much greater flexabilty. Retirees can either sell their home and invest the money or rent it out and live off the income.

Hi JP and Amelia so glad that you guys like and choose Ecuador as your home , and I also like the way you talk about the good things and bad things with respect , I came across on another blogger that spoke so bad about the food they serve or what the culture is used to that's the show I saw few days ago and as a person living there for over 5 years sure had some awful things to say about Ecuadorian food , and I thought that was a bit disrespectful towards the country that open their doors to him , I belive their is ways to make suggestions weathered is food, city's , and all that , I like your way as not bashing someone else's food culture and make this sounds as being so disgusting , that makes people think otherwise about the culture , their food and what they are about but continue with your good work and enjoying your life there , take care and be safe and hope to see more content so we can get to know what is like to enjoy life in Ecuador

I think they don't tax you on any income from abroad where you already paid taxes, I've been looking for a LOT of info online but it's very confusing! What do you do about Medicare expenses overseas? Do you still have to have it deducted from your social security? Do you still need supplemental? This is an area that would be good to hear about.
US Medicare insurance won’t be accepted outside of the US. We plan to stop paying the Medicare premiums when we leave the US. You can buy a local healthcare policy in the country where you end up living.
I have a super health insurance(BC/BS which covers overseas) which came with my pension ( and cost around $1,000 a month/ I have a very small amount that I pay - $25, on top of Medicare A/B: $170 ), but the latest Ecuador update doesn't mention if you can bring your own coverage... and I couldn't find the answer anywhere: too bad because if I drop my US Health insurance it would cost a fortune to reinstate both.
@@Tao-ji2sb I have a similar situation and what I understood is with the Bc/BS you pay the bill on site and submit a claim for reimbursement.
My understanding is that you still have about $169 deducted from SS for part A Medicare no matter where you decide to live. And without supplemental insurance or an Advantage plan you will pay $1600+ for each hospital stay. Part B is important for all outpatient surgeries and doctors visits, labs and imaging. Without a supplement it's a 20% copay. My mother just had to pay $44000 for a two night hospital stay in the US because she didn't want to pay the premiums for the supplemental insurance. 😮
Schwab charges $25 for an international wire, and is very fast (2 days typical)

I'm going back and forth where to retire: Mexico or Ecuador (only because of you) and although Mexico seems a more interesting choice with the diversity in the different states, it will be easier to retire to Ecuador. Mexico now wants expats to prove an income of $2700 a month or something like $150,000 in savings, bank statements and investments. I have no savings. Work full time still at 65. I intend to retire next year before my full retirement age of 66.8. I will live solely on SS and a very small pension. I also like that Ecuador deals in dollars and not pesos. Pesos confuse me. I'm so sick of the work force and watch all these videos of people enjoying life in Mexico and you both in Ecuador. I haven't seen any other channels on Americans living in Ecuador, so thank you for this channel.

Wife is from Ecuador and looking to retire there. Pros/Cons for living there vs. becoming a citizen? Love your videos by the way showing this beautiful country. Been there multiple times. Absolutely love it!!
Jeff. My wife also from Ecuador (Quito). Mine is hesitant on moving. Been trying too convince to do so until at least Medicare age. Health insurance is just too expensive in the states especially when self employed!
The only downside to becoming a citizen is that you have to vote or pay a $40 fine. Other than that, we don't see any real cons. You have to live here for 5 years before you can become a citizen though. However, since your wife in Ecuadorian, you can apply for the permanent amparo visa and not have to start with a temporary visa.

I really enjoyed your video concerning the cost of living difference between the US and Equador. Well Done, thank you! I spent seven years in overseas assignments while I was in the service. I am considering Ecuador and Thailand. I lived in Asia and am familar with the culture and love it. My social security is about $3k a month so based on your video I should be ok as a single man. I also have about $200K in savings to use as a cushion. The one concern I have is I am a chronic pain patient. I have a back problem and require pain medication daily. I am concerned that it would be difficult to get the medical care I need. I would welcome your comments on the subject. My SS at 62 will be $1850. My wife will only receive $900, five years later.
We have assets but really want to find a way to spend only my SS, so $1850.
We can do that in Mexico for sure.
The temporary Mexican visa has a high income requirement but you can also show $43,000 in a bank or retirement account for a couple to qualify.
We think we could still do this in Cuenca or Cotacochi.
And yes, we are selling our house now ! 😀
In lots of countries we think we can do public healthcare and pay out of pocket for everything else.
