    I have been flying drones for years now. everything from $30 toys, $1000 photography drones, and custom built race drones. propellers are so fragile on these drones. the slightest imbalance in a propeller with cause vibrations that can throw off all the onboard censors. so even though these skynet rounds are slow and do little damage. a string cought in one of the motors can slow the propeller enough to crash the drone. the purpose of these round wouldn't be to destroy the drone, just disable it. the range of these rounds is way to short to really be practical but I believe these to be very effective at doing their intended purpose.

    • @taofledermaus
      @taofledermaus  7 лет назад +7

      It seems highly unlikely a quadcopter is going to get close enough (25 yards) to you that you'd hit them with these Skynet rounds. Even if the drone is hovering 30 or 40 yards away you'd have to take many shots before you got lucky and hit it.

      True, but we can't afford to damage a real, quality drone, can't fly one that close to a naval airbase, and it's almost impossible to frame and focus a high speed camera on a moving object. Crossing your property in the air is one thing. Most people won't object to that, and if you are talking about an airplane, it's a moot point anyway.
      What people are objecting to, and rightfully so, are the "spy" drones. Flying over someone's property slowly and with camera running.
      The first case I was aware of was a father who shot down a drone with a shotgun. The drone was spying on his daughter who was sunbathing in the backyard. Full privacy fencing, etc. No question but that it was an attempt to get illicit pictures.
      The owners complained to the police that someone shot their drone. The father met the police in his driveway and told them the drone was trespassing. Long story short, the drone owners got in trouble, but they were trying to spin things the other way.

      I feel like it's supposed to disable the drone so that it can be recovered. Say that they are spying with it & it is a security issue, you want to recover that drone & find what data you can salvage from it. Blowing it into smithereens will destroy the unit completely. Recovering it intact might provide useful information such as finger prints & possibly video they were attempting to gather. I'm assuming drones have onboard storage that could be accessible by law enforcement or whatever security force seeking to take it down. I expected the cords to be much stronger & able to function as a 5-headed bola.

      The brushless motors used in most r/c vehicles today are rated in KV, that's rpm per volt. Popular quads ("drones") of the day run 800-1250 KV motors, and 3s-4s lithium batteries. That puts rpm range anywhere from 8800 to 18500 rpm at full throttle. Not allot of material out there is gonna stand up to a carbon prop at 10000 rpm.

    I do actually see this round as successful if you would like to be able to recover the drone you have shot down. The successful deployment of the strings means it will probably snag the drone, mid air, and not completely destroy it. If someone is invading your privacy or potentially deploying unmanned weapons against you, wouldn't you like to try and find out who did it? It's definitely catching something, and you can see they get stuck in trees. You don't have to destroy something to stop it.

    That "little piece of string" would have wrapped around the prop and severely impaired the drones ability to fly. It doesn't necessarily need to damage the drone through inertia, just tangle the props.
    One tactic I've heard of is a shell full of twist ties. I also thought a shell full of micro bolas might work. Any way to maximize the chances of tangling a prop.

    Nets and net rounds are _designed not_ to harm or damage the target more than absolutely necessary to get the net to where it needs to go. While your experience here is quite lacking, that is very understandable. When cords and nets hit spinning propellers, the propellers do the rest of the job, wrapping it up and in, seizing the rotation, and ultimately causing the drone to come crashing down. No (spinning) propellers, the net is _very_ unlikely to stay on a hit target. Kinda like a long rope dragged across and through a boat propeller: if the propeller isn't turning, no problem. If it is though, all hell breaks loose.

    Soooo.... the whole idea is that it gets tangled in the propellers while they're spinning.... it's not meant to damage it.

    You do know it is illegal to shoot a drone. It is a federal offense and is the exact same charge as shooting at an airplane. I have a friend in jail for it right now. So I would not advise of it.

      @Yankee Gohome I would shoot one down to. But according to our government and the FAA air space above the trees is not considered private property or you property at all. It is classified as the same as if an airplane flew over your house and you shot at it. And to answer your question we still have rights but the way our country witch I love and would die for our rights are being stripped away or trying to be stipped away on a daily basis. Our 2nd and 4th amendments are under attack. Mainly cause this new generation is a bunch off pussys. Aside from a few who actually care and do something. And I wouldnt use over priced ammo if I'm taking it down it's going down to ammo that really works and is much cheaper. I have plenty to choose from.

    If I had an "Arial tresspasser" wouldn't either birdshot or a combination with some magnesium and/or thermite work best. Like, if someone is flying a drone in my backyard, I'd think that more, smaller projectiles would work best. I think in the Russo-Ukraine War they are use 10 guage shells of buckshot?

      Not at the height my drone can fly... Even 3 1/2 magnum rounds out of a goose gun would have difficultly. Especially at altitude and it moving....

    • @IRONHEAD12701
      @IRONHEAD12701 6 лет назад

      KLR650nKY 3 1/2 mag is still good for 75 yds (225ft.) after that a good scope will work.

    • @klr650nky8
      @klr650nky8 6 лет назад

      And learning to lead the target is still a big part of the equation. Not too many can hit something on the move consistently, without proper practice... And drones can legally fly up to 133 yards (400 feet); a long shot to take geese legally with the 3 1/2 mag is about 75 to 80 yards, and some idiots do try to take them as far away as 95 yards since they can't learn how to camo the blind or get the decoys to work better.. So still not enough to reach most of them, and again learning to lead that small moving target at altitude, still have little chance of shooting it down. even with a scope and a high power rifle, have you done much shooting at those ranges, fighting gravity and every other environmental factor that would be fighting you? I doubt it. And hopefully you don't get caught since most drones have air to ground video feeds and the location of your shot will be pretty close to where the drone may drop out of the sky... Do you really want the FAA coming after you over something as silly as shooting an aircraft down? Talk about domestic terrorism...

    Would have been really interesting to see them deal with one in flight, maybe the strings would tangle the rotors? However yes it’s clear shot is still probably the better choice.
    As for why shooting down drones is illegal, that makes some kind of sense. Destruction of property and all that.

  • @JoshuaNicoll
    @JoshuaNicoll 7 лет назад +5

    I don't think you need to damage the drone really, hitting it would probably knock it off balance and cause it to drive uncontrollably, I'd really like to see it against a flying drone, but that's a lot of money.

      Joshua Nicoll even a cheap drone would easily stabilize. I got a cheap $99 one from Wal-Mart. you can give it a pretty good nudge and the gyro works it's magic. A higher end one that some one spying on you would ideally use would be able to brush it off, given the blades and internal is undamaged. I do have a pretty nice one, it's really impressive how stable they are.

    • @minigunuser25
      @minigunuser25 7 лет назад

      Many drones can self stabilize, even in windy conditions, I doubt it will make it lose balance enough to take down anything other than a tiny ass little toy drone

    Considering a flying drone has spinning propellors, that shoud be pretty effective. I mean, on a quadrotor you only need one propellor to get hit for it to get critically damaged.
    Have you ever flown a drone and hit a string with it ? that does some nasty damage to the propellor !
    But as you said, you need to train in order to be able to aim it properly, and that would be very expensive.
