The flachette rounds were used during Vietnam because they had lower recoil and were extremely adept at penetrating heavy vegetation. Originally, they were designed with stabilizers on the back end and dumped onto trenches in World War 1 or 2 (can’t remember which). They were extremely effective because they could punch straight through a soldiers helmet, but were eventually deemed illegal in battle. It’s actually a pretty fascinating piece of warfare history.

Field expedient "slugs"
- Take inexpensive trap/skeet loads and cut around the shell at the wad but not all the way through.
Upon firing the entire front of the shell leaves as one, essentially acting as a slug.
This was the way old timers used their shotguns to harvest deer during the great depression due to the only available ammunition at the time and the need to provide for their family.

We had a 105mm main gun round called "beehive" that dispersed 8K steel fleshettes with a fused bursting charge for use against troops at relatively close ranges
They had them in 40mm as well.
I wonder if they use those in the 105 howitzer found on the ac130 gunships 🤔
You ever seen one used on a person 😧
The last use of them was on the original Abrams tank with the M68 105MM cannon. Carried I believe 5 of them as part of ammo load out on my tank in Korea back in 1994. They had a fused nose cone that could be set to explode from muzzle end out to I believe 3000 meters (memory may have failed me there). You set the desired range and the round would detonate 200 meters short of that for maximum spread of the flechettes.
We load them on the apache in the 2.75 rockets. Under Geneva laws, you can't use them directly on people, but if there's "foliage" then it's perfectly A OK

Flechette is not hard to say!
My opinion the tenderizer was the WOW round. Great opener again Scott. Better and better
Scott's videos never fail to make my day. What a great American
The "double slug" sounds cool/devastating; but it's only useful if the two slugs actually spread out - if they travel in the exact same line it's no different than shooting with one slug.
That should have been the first one he tested. I think being on the same line is fine because when the first slows down and expands, the second one would crash into it causing greater expansion and energy dump while exploding the first in every direction. Both shots in this test basically passed through without hitting anything.
Bullet rule - more is more.
I don't think it's anymore effective than a single slug. I've seen this load tested before and the second slug went through the opening created by the temporary stretch cavity, doing nothing to aid in wounding. At long distance (for a shotgun) maybe it would increase your chance of hitting something important.
Also, it seemed like a fairly light load, especially compared to the Ballistic Machinist's rounds.
Except you can say "Nice Pair."
After reading “exotic rounds” I was almost expecting a Taofledermaus collaboration. Best experimental/exotic round testing channel on RUclips!

I'd love to see you try this with a pack of 12 gauge HESH rounds. They're basically slugs with a .22lr blank inside and are designed to explode on impact, kind of like how anti-tank rounds work.

@@vicroc4 this is true.......
The flechette (in Kentuck, pronounced “Flee Chets”) work direct fired from a 105mm howitzer. The piranha nails are just like IED wounds because IEDs are usually wrapped with shrapnel. The bolo macho gusto grande thing that did not work is chain shot from around the 16th century. Good to see to see George Zip hasn’t beaten that problem. The double slug was bound to not work, besides have you shot something with a 12 ga slug and needed to immediately shoot it again?
As for interesting topics, how about comparing shotguns by chambering (10, 12, 16, 20, 28, .410, .22LR). Show what Winchester AA #9 looks like compared to from a 20. That would be interesting.
Im pretty shure the chain round went trough and snapped the spine on the way out so pretty much it worked.

Fun fact: Before the advent of Hardpoints for mounting munitions on planes, in WW1 pilots often carried a bucket of bombs, mortars, grenades between their legs or in their laps. This sometimes consisted of flechettes (pronounced FLEH-shets btw) which were basically like lead or iron lawn darts, dropped from the aircraft by hand into the enemy trenches and fighting positions.
Cool!
They where disgarded as they where inconsistent and alot of time dodnt build up enough speed to do enough damage. They also where hard to aim and hardly ever hit the targets
I used to hear that they would take frag grenades and jam it in a tight glass jar so the spoon wouldn't come out and pull the pin then drop it out so when it hit the ground the glass would shatter and the grenade would go off shortly after
They used flechettes during the Victorian Era on battle ships mostly to cause damage to sails an when being shot out a Canon at the upper deck could cause massive amounts of injuries an death
Actually it is pronouced as Fluh-chea
4:17 It's pronounced as fleshet. This is a round I'm familiar with in the video game I play. And I wasn't surprised of how badly of an effect it had on the dummy. What I was surprised about was how one of the darts just zipped right through the dummy and almost made it out the back.

Same with the glazer shells.
Glazers are hollowpoints with birdshot packed into the nose with a small explosive charge for better armor piercing capabilities. They are very rare *I'm told.
I don't doubt there is a shotgun load like you describe, minus the explosive, but it isn't a Glaser. Glaser Safety Slugs are all handgun cartridges. They also aren't explosive, or armor penetrating. They're frangible, which means they actually don't penetrate much at all, as they're designed to break apart immediately on impact to prevent any over penetration. Just a thin copper jacket filled with shot, and capped in the front with polymer.

Isn’t buckshot the best? Naturally some spread helps ensure you at least get a partial hit.
Otherwise for max stopping power nothing beats the gatekeeper round , tfm had it on their channel recently
I love that a Low Price Mav 88 handled all that!
The piranha round left much more of an impression than I thought it would. As you said, it would probably work well as a cruel way of flipping a coin whether a home invader makes it or not.
I'm negatively biased against flechette because videogames treat it as "buckshot but armor-piercing", but gotta say it also held well, though I still consider flechette being better off being shrapnel for bombs and last I minded checking I believe they don't do those any longer.
Games also give it range
Flechette is *cover* piercing. Leaves don't lower its energy and it's a smaller diameter than buckshot so less likely to hit the tiny branches of bushes and such and go flying off target. Good for use in a jungle.
They have artillery with flechettes.
Underbarrel flechettes and flechette tank rounds.
@@Psilomuscimol I bwlieve the story behind flechettes in shltguns is they were manufacturing and using them for the creation of munitions (meaning cannon rounds and bombs), but the Geneva Convention banned them for that use so now they had a ton of stock of flechettes and the choice either to melt them, or find another use for them with some other weapon.

Lol I mean frag 12 I got a tub of 15000 of those gaven to me
The"Bee Hive". Forgotten the stats on it. I do recall a Vietnam Vet telling me that it would clear out everything in front of the cannon that fired it. Said that it was not wise to stick your head up to see what was going on. He mentioned the 105 mm Howitzer. Does anyone know if there was one for the 155?
After I posted the information above, I remembered that the Vet who told me about the Bee Hive was stationed at Khe Sanh during the Tet Offensive..
I have watched your channel for some time. It's refreshing to see you have so much fun. I enjoy it a lot.
Honestly amazed at how straight that tenderizer went into the target.
Yeah you'd think it would tumble after being fired. Although I don't think that would make it any less lethal lol
You're officially the new Demolition Ranch. The crazy shotgun shells were always his best videos.
You've probably already heard of them, but if not the Taofledermaus channel has vids of crazy shotgun rounds they've made and fans have sent in
Tbh the most interesting ones to me out of this I believe was the shells with the darts and the piranha shells, I’d like to see somewhere test the spread and also how far away it is still lethal, idk for some reason it kind of makes me think of it being like a very lethal birdshot round cause the projectiles are so small but birdshot far away obviously loses its power of being lethal but how much spread it can get compared to other rounds would really make anyone a decent shot, so I’d like to know how much they spread and are still lethal very cool rounds
guys be like: shotgun plus arrows?
yes, how did you know i was just thinking that
I think the spread starts to become super unpredictable and wide when it's about 12 feet out. They start to lose too much velocity as well. My cousin shot some at a target 15 yards out, and it had a spread of about 6ft diameter. Then, at 7 yards out, he shot at a target, and the flechettes would either bounce off or penetrate no more than 3/4 inch. And he was shooting a phone book. The .22 had more penetration at a further distance. I still wouldn't want to get shot with flechettes at close range though they're made to maim
Your videos are the funniest and most entertaining mess I've seen in a while!! Hilarious and really cool stuff!! Thanks for laughs!
I would like to see the tenderizer rounds in a full-auto shotgun with a few more zombies and just mow them down
you know for (science purposes) i bet Brandon can get you the shotgun if you don't already have one😁and he can bring some cool stuff too...we need more of this. give the people what they want!! Stay Awesome brother 👍
And the explosive shotgun rounds using binary explosives (unfortunately REAL explosive slugs like the FRAG-12 are illegal)
Those flechette and piranha rounds are scary! id love to see more of the tenderizer though.
I absolutely loved your presentation on here! Hands down the most fun I have ever watched for ammo reviews!!! Thank you for your effort!
Fwiw: Mossberg Maverick 18.5” Seriously, $199 - $250. If you are a first time gun owner just looking for and affordable home defense shotty, then this is a reliable and affordable option.
The piranha round popping that zombie skull was epic! But you forgot to hit Mr zombie with a dragons breath round... Lol great video Scott!
You never disappoint. That tenderizer is impressive…Thanks Kentucky
at 14:30 in the video it looks like a mutilated zombie christmas tree lol. Great video man. boomstick is my favorite language. It is almost poetic.
I always get a chuckle out of your videos. Even on bad days you still make me laugh.
10:42 "On today's video I'm going to see how bulletproof a nun is"
The bot commented on the same comment twice
The tenderizer seemed most impressive. I’ve made my own flechette rounds before. Back in the day I had some dragons breath rounds.
Would be curious to see how some of the weird self defense ammo performs against ballistic zombie dummies, whether it's the old glaser safety slugs or the g2 RIP ammo, or just generic frangible ammo
On an unrelated note, I would also be curious to see how much damage the zombie torso would take from blunt force trauma while wearing armor
Something like a shotgun slug while it's wearing soft armor
Bullets: “macho gacho”
Google translate: *crouching male*
What the...?
10:18 had that zombie taped up like red from pineapple express😂
This was awesome. My wife left the room after the head fell off. Gotta love these videos. I think the Door breachers would work great on a hot air balloon. Just saying. Thanks again Scott...and Scott.
I liked those rounds, especially the Tenderizer, Piranha and that one with the solid brass! Absolutely devastating!
Kinda sad you didn’t say “NAILED IT” with the Piranha round 😂
