There are lots of ways to play the intro, but I think current Tre plays with a mallet on the floor tom with his right hand and hits the rim of the floor tom with a stick on his left, playing the tamborine with his left too. Although I have no idea what they did in the studio
Slight edit: Tre uses a floor tom to the left if his snare nowadays, as well as two to the right, so I'm not sure about the sticking
