There's not a drummer alive that doesn't recognize the name Dave Grohl. Dave helped define a new genre of music and drumming, he's been a part of multiple chart topping/genre bending groups, and he's a sought after session drummer by many large musical acts.
The question is...why? What makes his style of drumming so hard to emulate? Each drummer brings their own unique feel and sound to the music. Whether it be his work with the Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age, Probot, or any of his other side projects...Dave Grohl is undeniably one of the most popular drummers to come along in recent time. 1) Power. His drumming always sounds massive, and that makes up for what he may lack in a more technical aspect.
2) Inspiration through accessibility. When I see a clip of, say, Larnell Lewis, Benny Greb, or Tony Williams play, I sit and watch, just mesmerized. When I see Dave Grohl play, I get stoked and start air drumming along. He is a great drummer and made me want to be, too, when I was a kid. Even if just a song at a time.
From the very beginning, you just knew Dave possessed something special in his playing. Like regardless of Nirvana's longevity, this guy would definitely...ahem....Stick Around.
@@dudustickytricks but he is kinda technical in that you might think a particular track sounds easy and instantly nail-able. Then you fire up the PA around your kit, press the Foo Fighter button, " oh this shits on!" ...Freeze on first stroke.
I disagree profoundly with your use of “hard” on the title, and the definition of “hard” you’re using for here, “hard skills” is a subject (as in noun) in itself, you can’t extrapolate the meaning of hard in “hard skills”, and use it as an adverb, when you use it on its own, it necessarily describes difficulty, which Dave’s drumming generally doesn’t have… most of his songs are excellent for intermediate drumming, practicing 4/4 patterns, heel toe technique, single stroke speed and stamina, which doesn’t really take that much relative time to develop. “unique” yeah, maybe “musical” I thought was a good description for it you gave on the video. But “uniquely hard”? Very much doubt it

Dave also hits VERY hard. Its not just the patterns or the speed or the note count. Its the consistent intensity of certain strikes reliefed against more nuanced or less emphasized patterns that are all simultaneously going which takes years if not decades to develop. He is very aware of his touch and intensity or in otherwords, his DYNAMICS. There is a way you can hit a drum to make it sound invincible. The trick is doing it every time, every beat. Dave has mastered that.
It was painfully obvious when Taylor was taking the stage and Dave was drumming. you can hear the snare crying :p

That was perfectly stated.. He's the Godfather of Flam Shots.. Just wanted to add if I may, Dave has a way with bass drum syncopations that makes it sound like he's kicking 16ths straight through but instead using accents on the floor tom to fill the silent BD notes. "My Hero" is the perfect example. Tried that track for the first today and realized I cant even begin to actually play it. Dave's ability to "create" sets him apart and he instilled that into Hawkins and Hawkins devoured it. Two just fucking insanely great drum Gods that actually loved and greatly respected one another. Very rare among the competitive world of pro drumming. EDIT: Also hear Down in the Park for what I mean when I say he was heavily influenced by Dave. And Dave's work with Killing Joke is also greasy AF!
I was watching an interview on BBC 1 music with Taylor Hawkins where he said the first drummer for Foo fighters quit because being able to play live vs the studio is so different due to the fact that you have to keep hitting the drum the same way, same intensity, every strike until the track has been recorded. So imaging hitting sixteen note on a bass drum with some odd parts that hit eight while your hands are galavanting all over the place is truly insane and gifted. That's what Dave got and that what he passed on to Taylor. I'm a 36 yo woman who just started drumming and when I saw that I felt like quitting cause ain't no way I believe I can do that. 😪
He hit so hard that when Nirvana were rehearsing for the MTV, he very nearly didn’t get to do it. Apparently.

Dave is a very kinetic drummer. He hits like an anvil dropped from space, and he also embodies the groove. He doesn’t just play the groove of a song, he BECOMES the groove. He’s one of those drummers that manages to become one with the kit when he plays.
His drumming on the song „song for the dead“ by Queens of the stone age is so tight. I love the intro

Dave is on record as saying " he treats a guitar almost like a drumkit" with different strings reprinting kicks and snares and others cymbals. So he creates drum parts that sound like guitar parts and treats a guitar like it's a drumkit = Dave is a mad scientist and musical genius.
Fun Fact; he's also a self taught piano player.

Hes also a marketing as well as a musical genius... Makes us drummers very proud. If only we could all be there for him now. RIP Taylor.
I wish I could play a second instrument. I've put so much effort into drumming that at 50, im not so sure I would have the capacity. Keys and bass guitar would be my personal choices. Access to a musical instrument rich atmosphere would be key to this. Sucks that WV has nery a conservatory or drum instructor anywhere.
Stephen Taylor is the best instructor I've seen on RUclips. I've been playing for 30 years and I dig watching him. Dave Grohl made me become a drummer. He made it look so cool. Great video

Great take and video. As drummers we need to serve the song and celebrate when it's done well. From Phil Collins's in the air tonight to Ringo's come together parts, musical drummers have a place in everyday culture. Dave is a great example of Drumming that makes a mark on culture.

One thing that people often miss about Dave's playing is he would often throw accent notes in between notes on the hi-hats - for Smells Like Teen Spirit, you played "one-two-three-four" on the hats, but it's actually played "one-two-and-three-four." Breed is a good example where he plays "one-two-three-four-and-." It's a very Dave thing that I find really reinforces certain guitar and melody parts.
You can actually watch how he plays these patterns in live videos - the SNL performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit is a good example. The notes are often hard to hear and end up feeling a lot like ghost notes to me. But you can tell when they're missing.
Great observation. How does a drummer with no formal training come up with, and then refine such a unique style? Makes me feel Ive been slacking for 30 years. And I probably was cuz I cant touch this stuff...correctly.

@@user-fh3fw1zq3d : Funny coincidence, I just watched that video a few days ago, the subtle differences in playing style were something I picked up on since there was a 1991 video in the background. I think it's fascinating to see how playing styles change over time. I've noticed that Dave also sets his kits up differently than he used to.
Dave is a natural. How many artists are there who broke new ground that didn't know how to read music? I can count dozens and they're the reason for the progression of music.

i remember back in the day being the only one thinking that beat had more going on or was more difficult to play than people acted about it.
it was keeping the simple, steady, single quarter notes going on the hi hat, while maintaining the active-aggressive like beat that was difficult to me; while everyone else seemed to just laugh at me for it.
but when they attempted to show me up or play it, it always seemed off or felt like they cheated it or were off a bit somehow- while they of course pretended that they played it authentically etc.

Thing is it really is an inherently easy song and beat to play. The reason it can be so hard is because of the amount of small accents and pauses Dave likes to fill in, in order to really serve the song. Especially in the main chorus when he uses that ever so slight pause between each crash to give it this explosive feel. Some people can easily miss that and struggle to keep with it

Love this! I found myself drawn to anything he plays before I even knew he was the common denominator in all these bands ... Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age ... I think Dave Grohl became my favourite drummer well before I even knew who he was! The "drum hooks" and "parts driven playing" makes his music so fun I think.

@@StephenTaylorDrums Really love your videos by the way! Your tutorial on how to play 'My Hero' was super useful. Several of the songs you reference in this video are songs I have (attempted) to learn and cover on my channel in the last year or so ... In Bloom, No One Knows, Teen Spirit, My Hero (with thanks to your help). I only wish I could play them anywhere near as well as Grohl did! He sure is a master of the craft!
Other things he does that make him stand out are the microscopic snare rolls he does on big choruses that keep the frantic pace feel. And the single 16th note high hat taps he does usually going from one measure to the next. Very subtle but he is a master at it.
Ive been peaking in at this channel lately. Very impressed with your fluency in Grohl. This is a drummer whom anybody feels like they can imitate to a tee, but sound so awful actually performing...even if the guitar and bass are dead on. If the drums aren't right, the whole feel of the song dies. Ive been an active drummer for over 31 years and I still can't touch "My Hero", and I dont pretend that I sound good faking it. When you have already picked your influences at a very early age, (Peart for me) and studied and dissected a style of drumming, Dave and Taylor's style become that much harder to adapt to. Dave's ridiculously precise low end syncopations are to die for and what sets him apart. That and he has an ear for the room.

That wasn’t Kurt that was Chad Channing. He was the drummer during the Bleach era of Nirvana but he also wrote the drums on In Bloom and I think a couple others on nevermind.
Stephen idk if you’re a fan but PLEASE do a vid on Jimmy Chamberlin. Probably the only jazz heavy rock player of the 90s an absolute unit of a drummer.

With all due respect I feel the quarter notes on the hi hat on "My Hero" is either layered in or he's using foot splashes. How do you play all of those mixed flams on the kit and maintain quarters on hat with hands? Consistent quarters on open hi hat is very difficult with the tempos that Dave plays at. One finds that the right hand wants to do more resulting in occasional sixteenths. I am such a noob. Have been for 31 years. But I'm mature enough to admit that some formal instruction would vastly improve my playing. Rudimentally, I play fine. Creatively, I hit that ceiling in my 30s (15 years ago) and can't seem to shake off certain styles I've come to cling to. I dont like it when ppl tell me "You play like the dude on Queensryche!" I like Queensryche but never bought an album or been to a show. Maybe the culmination of studying Peart my whole life with my affinity for funk. Dave is NOT a traditional rock drummer. Anyone who says these parts aren't at least a little difficult need to take the headphones off, record themselves playing it, then report back here with their results.
Ok I love ya man. You’re an amazing RUclipsr and drummer, but Dale Crover came up with the drum part to Drain You, and Chad Channing came up with half the drum parts to Nevermind including In Bloom. I get this isn’t common knowledge but credit should go to where credit is due

After going to a Ffighter concert in Belfast years ago. Taylor sang and Dave drummed for age's.
After seeing them like 5 times it was a delight for that to accually happen for once.

Dave is a classic and a very talented drummer but if you've "yet to find another drummer who writes memorable drums parts" I've got one word for you: Darkside from the band Mgla & Kriegsmachine

Kinda forgot his work in Queens of the stone age... i would argue it was his best.
Little disappointed by your flawless technique. You need to set your hi hat up like 10 inches and then lean forward while drumming, making sure your snare hand comes down from above your head. When you're on the ride, your face should be close enough to the snare that you feel your nose hairs vibrate from snare hits coming from above like hammerfists.

Anyone watching this who hasn't listened to Killing Joke's self-titled 2003 album w Grohl on drums needs to do it now, and thank me later.
Although, he recorded each drum separately for that album in order to get a certain sound- an achievement in itself, but means some of it is less easy to translate to a regular kit style.

I personally think the chorus drum part in My Hero is much better on the album than how it’s been played live ever since. It sounds less impressive live.
If you're talking about the intro it's actually two different drum parts played by two different drummers that were mixed together. That's why it's impossible to play exactly like that live.

@@Bradford659 ah, gotcha. I played that song in a Foos tribute and I watched a tutorial video on how to play it right. It sounded pretty spot on with the studio version. But the studio version is also mixed and mastered and compressed and all that so it definitely sounds better than live. But look up a tutorial video and see if it's actually different. I really don't know honestly.

Dave Grohl isn't a bad drummer and his drumming fits the music he is playing, but there is nothing difficult about his drumming. If you are a little bit talented and if you spend a little bit of exercise then you should have no problem playing along to his songs.
If you want to hear actually difficult rock or metal drumming then listen to George Kollias or Tomas Haake or someone like this.

Dave Grohls drumming is not particular hard to play. It is entry level drumming most of the times. Nothing wrong with it so, because the music he is playing does demand groove and feel and not a big amount of technique or pratice.

With all due respect, Foo fighters and older generation Dave Grohl drums are by far the easiest songs I learned on the drums.
Please read my pinned comment. You have the wrong definition of "hard". This is talking about a set of "hard skills". Essentially, why does Dave sound like Dave, why is it so hard for others to replicate that sound (not just notes....notes are easy to replicate...sound, feel, etc. are much harder), and what can we learn from it.
I would tend to agree this is quite click baitish…
it takes you one hour of drumming to be able to play half of acdcs catalogue... and it takes 20 - 40 years of practice to play it as well as phil rudd.. being able to just play a song means next to nothing

I’ve got to say I saw him quite a few years ago and I wasn’t impressed yes, team spirt was good, where as a good drummer he’s not in the same street or town as the likes of Bonham Baker and Moon
I would have to disagree. But...I used to agree with that sentiment. Being a drummer for 35 years myself AND being heavily influenced by the 3 drummers you mentioned (as well as Mitch Mitchell and Phil Rudd), it wasn't until I became the drummer for a Foo Fighters tribute band that I truly understood just how great Dave actually is. A lot of the drum parts going back to the first album, which he wrote and recorded by himself, are insanely more complicated than they sound. You have to first see how some of these parts are played with tutorial videos because you can't even figure it out by listening. Try to figure out and play properly the drum break in Rope for example without seeing how it's done. Everlong is actually a song that's deceptively difficult to play through properly. So is My Hero. It's like he takes difficult drum exercises and incorporates them into songs but makes them sound simple and easy. Even the intro for Teen Spirit sounds easier than it actually is. Anyone can do the bass and snare part but adding in that open hi-hat quarter note in between and doing it properly takes a little practice.
I have much respect for you my friend but you are playing the Drain You part incorrectly. It sounds like a LL on the snare but it feels much smoother when you play with with a lR. It helps the song breathe so much better.
Dave is absolutely brilliant, but to use Stephen's language, Dave seems a bit "ALL CAPS" to me.

Dave is a great drummer. Very tasteful. He's the new Ringo. But lets no go overboard here. ;\
I don't think a video pointing out the finer points of what makes Dave "Dave" is going overboard. We should find the quality in every drummer and then celebrate that while learning from it.
Every drummers great in their own right and has there own unique style of greatness. It’s not always about difficulty of chops

@@smarkmalark I don't understand. Grohl has amazing chops. He pays at 200 bpm with linear fills while keeping time with the hi-hat and playing really fast tom work. I DON'T GET IT. People call these jazz drummers god's when they could not do half of what Dave can do. ???????

You want a great guitarist....find a drummer.
It's because you study drums like an academic professor. A robot. You can't just study music the sanitized way. You need to have moments of improvisation where you leave everything loose. Otherwise go play for and orchestra.

Bare minimum is bare 🤷 again Matt garshka and danny carey hard skill wise compared to dave is like comparing a structural welder to an under water welder one of them can do the others job but not the other way around. Just to clarify i mean dave cannot play at the level matt and danny can but matt and danny can play at Dave's level. Just doing the job might be good to some and i except that taste is subjective but that doesn't change the difference in skill level and actual music education.
