In high school around 04' one of my friends wrote Lemmy a letter as a part of a school project. It was a sociology class and everyone was asked to write a letter to one of their idols. As you might have guessed, most people wrote to various celebrities ...actors, musicians, rappers. About 6 weeks later he received a response from Lemmy (which would be the only response in the class). I remember him showing me the letter and I still get goosebumps thinking about it, my jaw dropped. It was not short or haphazardly written, about two pages and Lemmy had taken the time to draw a diagram of how his amps were set up. He also took the time to give his input on some questions my friend asked about some songs he was trying to write. It's hard to believe that he would put this much time into a letter to a 16 year old that he didn't know who lived in another country. The world truly lost an irreplaceable rock n' roll legend when Lemmy passed.

All these years, I have to admit that I thought he was a bit of a dick. Despite being into metal myself since the early nineties, I never listened to Motorhead. I've always seen people who are forthright in their views as people who don't give a shit who they insult or hurt. After watching a couple of videos, including this one, I have to say that I got him very wrong. My misunderstanding about him probably came from something he said about the Welsh. I went to the same school as he did, albeit about 20 years later, and he commented how much he hated it there because it was there that he learned how much the Welsh hate the English. He was right, of course, but we have some very good reasons. That school was, and still is, a dump.
It was hard to watch when Dave choked up after taking out the picture. He has lost a few good friends and I've never seen him tear up. This meant a lot to him and now it means something to me
agree. i mean i never liked the music of lemmy but that was pretty sad. i almost cried.. i have so much stories from by best friend and i was so much into that :/
To be honest the man has lost quite afew. I'd think most people would be torn up after a friend of theirs commits suicide and your true hero dies, hell I'd be a wreck.
Same here. I like motorhead. And Lemmy will be missed. But Dave just gave the most beautiful speech and almost stole the show in a nice, cool and respectful way.
I personally wasn't expecting it, because when I watched it live it went all glitchy so I was thinking he said something funny and humouros but after watching it again and heard him say that I was like, wow he is the guy i now aspire to be like, funny and crazy but have a kind heart for others.
lemmy was a true gentleman never lied and never hurt no one that's truly something considering who he was i have serious respect for that love live lemmy
One of my favorite videos of Lemmy is the one of him reading the letter from a Black metalhead who was being bullied by other black people for liking metal. Guy's heart wasn't just big, it was truly massive. He holds no hate in his heart for any one or thing
The tenderness in his voice when he says "I wanted to give it to him on his birthday... but..." tears my fucking soul apart, oh my god. I'm a pretty cynical dude, but that had me tear up a bit.
Eratosthenes I had tickets to see Motörhead at download when he died. My godfather gave me his original Motörhead leather wrist band from the 70s, his ticket stubs and original records. All framed on my wall. Except for the wrist band that I've worn every day for 6 years
Lemmy was one of the nicest people in Rock I have ever met. I had the honor of accompanying him to secrets cabaret in Tampa Fl in 2005. He was such a great person. We talked about history all night. He was a collector of war memorabilia and loved history. He then made me go with him to the casino all night! One of the best nights of my life. Awesome person and musician. He had a great sense of humor as well. He was that nice to me and I am nobody…just a person that respected him and loved his music.
Sir you are far from a nobody, as Lemmy obviously saw and others gather from this kind, thoughtful, genuine and warm post.. What an amazing night for you and I would imagine Lemmy said the same too.. 🎩🎸🎩
I can personally attest that Lemmy was a really kind and good person. After a show at Roseland Ballroom in NYC a few years back, I approached him outside the stage door and quickly told him how epic the show was - and it was! - and that it was my first (of eventually three) Motörhead show. Despite having women and people hanging around him, he reached out and took hold of my hand and proceeded to walk with me towards his tour bus. It was ten seconds, but it felt like ten HOURS! He just listened as I thanked him for a great show and he thanked me for coming, and we took a photo together - which I still have and posted on my Instagram page. Thank you for your music and your gentle heart, Ian Kilmister. Long live Lemmy!
Kristoffer Definitely was one of a kind, now we the Grohlmeister he has the flame now Lemmys gone . Every time it thunders , I know it crazy but I think Lemmys playing again.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Poor Dave, such a kind man having to deal with all this pain. #riptaylorhawkins 💔 Look, i'm not even a huge fan of The Foo's, but since I heard the news, I've been here watching all these videos like an idiot, it breaks my heart. I'm in awe of the kind of conection Dave and Taylor had, the purest love you could ever have.
Grohl really is a nice dude . I met him at bar in Seattle ( the ok hotel - now gone ) right before his first Foo album released i think about a year after Kurt’s death . I was really bummed out on life living at my grandmas and just quit a shit dishwashing job an hour earlier and said fuck it im getting some beers . So i went to that bar with no one there except the woman tending bar and started gettin a buzz on then low and behold in walks Dave and sits by me and orders a coffee . So i said something to him and we chatted briefly and introduced our selves then like 10 mins later some manager or agent looking dude came in and wisked Dave off to a back table booth and i was like oh well no biggy i got dissed by a rockstar but he’s a busy dude and im just some random nobody getting drunk at 1 in the afternoon , then like 15 mins later he came back up to me and was like ‘hey man best of luck to you it was nice to meet you i hope things work out for you” and said the same to him then he left with the other dude. I remember thinking , man that was really nice of him , he could have easily just blown me off but instead was cool even though he was obviously busy.
I was the "baby" in a band with some harDCore "Alumni" in the early 90s. Met Dave once when he was back visiting DC. Super down to earth guy. Wish i could see him again. Wish i could have met Lemmy too.....❤
Lemmy died at my birthday. I was a teenager, on a small bar, going nuts over losing my wallet when the TV hit the news. Nobody there knew him, but my heart sank so low. He was a like a hero and a father for so many teens starting their rock life, and for that I really thank you Sir Lemmy
My favorite Lemmy story was when a reporter asked him after a show how Motörhead would sound in 30 years if they played that same venue? Lemmy replied, The same but LOUDER!!! Gotta love someone that walked it like they talked it!!!RIP Lemmy
Lemmy also appears in Foo Fighters- White Limo video. And at Studio 606 (Foo's Recording Studio) there is a mural of Lemmy on the outside back wall. www.google.com/maps/@34.2291946,-118.5341957,3a,25.2y,27.21h,95.02t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sLxr_Kfb4MR4UKR_c_c3kxA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192
I chilled with Dave a few times when we were teenagers. Down to Earth, nice guy , easy to get along with. He was 17 or so , as were my friends and I. He was pretending to be around 21 or 22 to stay in the band Scream.
@dani cali Someone that is truly a "goon" would have a history of violence or a few assault charges, arrests, that prove he is someone that uses aggression and violence in disputes or confrontations...instead of assertiveness. If you are thinking about the time he told someone in a striped shirt to get the fuck out of his show for fighting. That was assertiveness, not aggression. Dave neither threatened to beat him up, and he certainly didn't rush down in the crowd to actually fight him. He was rightfully angry with an actual "goon" for fighting as his show, and told him to get out. You don't have to be "nice" and assertive at the same time. You gotta be firm, direct, and authoritative to be effective with goons. Unless you know of a time he got violent or threatening with someone without a very good reason for it.
Lemmy putting out his cigarette in his drink when he saw that his baby was there, that is just the greatest. What a loving, respectful, kind man he was. Absolute legend. Love you Lemmy!
@@LisA82G ,yes u can, but he didn't say "I believe in God but I'm not religious" Usually when people say they are not religious and nothing else it means they don't believe in God. Let's hope I'm wrong though🙏
I think Lemmy'd get fucking bored in heaven, I bet he's drinking lucifer under the table and jamming like crazy whilst popping by to see what the old man upstairs is cranky about.
Kerry King originally inspired me to play guitar (yeah yeah) and when i met him, he was in fact, a total dick. Psycroptic is easily my fave band. About 5 years ago, I met Joseph Haley from Psycroptic and Joe has to be one of the most humble and genuine guys i have ever met.
@TheTimbalanders he's like 5'6 or 5.7. After Kerry walked away, Paul Bostaph and Hanneman chatted my bud and I up for a couple of minutes. Those two were class acts.
That's a terrible saying. I've met some of mine and they've all turned out to be very cool and down to earth. Maybe it should be "Be careful who you idolize."
This is a poem I wrote after hearing that Lemmy had died. I have this thing called tinnitus, that's ringing in my ears. I can't remember when I got it, I've had it years and years. I know it was in my teens, those rock years of abuse. I really don't mind though, those wondrous times of youth. Motorhead were the culprits, Lemmy he's now dead. But the legacy he's left me, is here inside my head. I wouldn't want to change it, if that's a choice I had. I have all those memories, of the times that I was bad. So here I am listening, with ringing in my ears. An invisible part of me, memories of those years. I'm 62, wouldn't have missed it for the world :-)))
I, too, buddy would not trade a lack of tinnitus for all of the front row slam dancing and getting caught in a mosh and double guitar solos and pyro bombs and wailing vocalists and the MEMORIES of many many bands that I witnessed in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. Thanks for sharing my perspective. \m/_

ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR POEM ☮️ WITH EVERYTHING GOING ON IN THE WORLD TODAY WE ALL THINK BACK TO SOME OF THE WONDERFUL TIMES WE HAD. OHH HOW I WISH WE COULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN. Ok its 00:31 in the morning, I'm laying in the darkness of my room with my wife snoring softly by my side, I'm 54 years old and I'm fucking crying because Dave Grohl has a big heart.
The perfect tribute to a departed friend. A mixture of laughter, a few swear words, anecdotes, shared passions, tears and LOVE. Thanks, Dave for your thoughts and words.
A perfect tribute to Lemmy. As a veteran of the Rainbow, I shared many Jack Daniels with Lemmy at his favorite spot by the first floor bar. He was always the same down-to-earth guy, content to have a drink and a chat with whoever came over to say hello. A true original...as are you, sir
Somehow, I feel Dave has evolved into a higher being. He’s become someone who can make you laugh and then cry with two words. He has such a calm power. A true musical icon with lyrical power
I'm just binging everything Taylor and FF tonight, trying to get through my sad. Watching Dave cry at this funeral makes me think of what he must be going through right now, though I can't begin to imagine how hard it is for him. Dave, all of us out here just want to wrap our arms around you and be there. Like the biggest universal hug of support and love. I don't know if energy or God or the universe or what could possibly help you feel that giant hug, but I sure wish there was a way to do it. I am so very sorry for your hurt. I know he won't see this, but it helps me to put it out there into the world.
It doesn't matter who wrote it. Dave said the words and it seemed to me like he meant the words. That's all. I am a Lemmy fan, not a Dave Grohl music fan but I appreciate his speech and the way always pays respect to the guys who came before him.
Jimmy Griffin don't blame him. Shit was loud. One time I was at practice and my bass had no volume, so I fucked with my knobs, and nothing. Bent down right next to my speaker...bass full volume on both pickups, tone set to full, amp set to 100% volume. Right when I got my ear about two inches from the speaker cabinet I must have jostled a cord because my speakers popped to life. I was completely deaf for about ten seconds. Then I heard nothing but a loud ringing for like another 30 seconds. Then I started hearing out of my left ear. My right ear was shot the rest of the day though I couldn't hear anything but silence or ringing until about 2pm the next day. Judging from Dave's reaction they must have set a really similar volume as I had that day.

Ian Hamilton I was so lucky to see foo fighters front row at CalJam and I’ve never been so emotional at a concert before. Dave’s impact on the rock community and society as a whole is so powerful, and continues to be one of the most genuine celebrities out there. He doesn’t hold himself on a high pedestal, it almost feels like he’s your cool neighbor when he talks.
I had a dream I was performing at some random bar, I usually play blues and stuff with guys i just sit in with. We were warming up and I was looking in the small regular crowd and leaning up against the stage was Lemmy. He felt so real. Drinking his whisky and smoking right there. I tried to maintain my composure but i couldnt help myself. I started playing ace of spades on my guitar, just as like a little warmup thing. I looked down and he grinned and tipped his hat to me. Last thing I remember is finishing my set and going to the bar to find him and he was gone. He's truly an inspiration
Can relate with you there, when I had a motorcycle crash a couple years back, and it was after Lemmy had passed, I remember his interview about bringing a guy out of a motorcycle crash, then while I was basically in a deep rest, he said to me "You're not dyin yet, you still got a life to live" and then I woke up in the hospital, though still having a horrible anxiety attack and being in sever pain, that brought me to tears cause it felt real to me
We all know Dave Grohl won’t read this but Dave, you are a magician with words. Whether it’s standing up for a lonely fan getting picked on in the crowd during your concerts , giving supportive advice to other people, loving all people, you’re just an awesome guy. In my heart I know the love you gave to Kurt, Taylor, and so many others meant something to them. I believe being human makes our true ability to see more difficult. However, we never fail, when it counts, seeing it in others. We all love you Dave!!!
Watching Dave bring out the photo of Little Richard just broke my fucking heart. Every time I have a Jack and Coke (which is not infrequently), I think of Lemmy. I was never a big fan of Motorhead (just knew a few songs), but some of my best memories had his music as the soundtrack. I still miss you Lemmy. Godspeed.
every time I order one I hold an Ace of Spades card up asking if I can get it for free if I show them this XD they knew I was referencing Motörhead and laughed about it
Whenever anyone ever tried to pigeonhole or stereotype Motorhead's music to any particular type of genre (heavy metal, thrash, punk....etc.), Lemmy would always just say, "We're a rock n' roll band, plain and simple." I loved him for his authenticity and attitude most of all. He never tried to be something he was not and always walked his own place. Another great piece of advice from him was, "Run your own flag up a pole and see who salutes it." RIP Lemmy Kilmister....a true rock icon.
@Simon Cowell I can imagine that when one of your best friends, someone you've travelled the world with, someone who you've created art with and experienced success with, suddenly dies from their own suicide, that it would always feel raw. It will never be good for him to talk about Kurt Cobain simply because he probably still cannot fathom what had happened. I guess you need to ask yourself what would happen if the person you loved the most died tomorrow. And then what would you say to the reporters for the next 20 years asking "so what about your dead friend, how was that? How do you feel?". God that hurts the most.
Best drummer I've ever met, probably the most genuine person I've ever talked to, and by far the best friend I've ever had in my life jumped off an overpass last year. He showed me most of the music I listen to now and got me into Motorhead. This bowl's for you, Chris.
Suicide is so hard . My son died from suicide/depression. It is different than death be illness or accident. The person wants to end their pain, but instead they just transferred it to their family and friends. I’m very sorry about your friend.
Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis started Rock'nRoll together and those are 3 people Lemmy looked up to, as well as The Beatles, especially the late, great, John Entwistle
Dude, little Richard was arguably the most badass dude on the planet, he kept a religious identity when everyone in that community told him he'd go to hell for being who he was, he preached equality in a time and a place where he was hated because of his race. If anyone deserves the respect of Dave Grohl and goddamn Lemmy it's Little Richard. There's nothing more badass than recognizing that you're not the only badass.
I saw Lemmy at the Rainbow in Hollywood in 2008 (apparently he was there every day). I walked by him and said “Hey, Lemmy”. He simply responded by saying “Oi”. My coolest rock n roll story...
I helped a friend in Tullahoma, TN run a car wash that he owned for a while. Lynchburg, TN is maybe 15-20 minutes away from their which is where the Jack Daniels distillery is and also the home of Little Richard. LR would frequent the car wash in his black Escalade and he really is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He would always bein the passenger side of the ride and would always roll down the window and chat with me for minute and always handed me a generous tip. This was about 5 years ago. A really good person.

Lemmy was an amazing man, I met him, along with a friend of mine who had cerebral palsy, really bad, Lemmy was playing a pinball machine at the club, my friend also loved pinball....they ended up talking, and ended up playing pinball and talking all night..as much as I adore Lemmy I didn't want to Interfere..it was my friends special moment so I just hung back and watched them together..it meant the world to my friend, my friend died a few months later but Lemmy gave him the greatest night of his life, and he did it selflessly, he wanted to do this for a fan....beautiful man....r.i.p Mr. LEMMY....and thank you for being kind to my friend sir.

The man's heart is just enormous. Love Dave.
Same here. I like motorhead. And Lemmy will be missed. But Dave just gave the most beautiful speech and almost stole the show in a nice, cool and respectful way.

I love that Dave simply said: "I play in the Foo Fighters." when he, in reality, is so much more than that when it comes to the Foo Fighters.
the sign of a true musician in a band. He isnt the foo fighters, hes just another guy in a group effort, a true man of class.
He's more than that in general. Not arguing, just adding my peace to your point.
I heard he was the drummer for Tenacious D and Nirvana, too.

@dani cali Whatever, my personal experiences with the guy were positive. He was genuine. Nice alias Cortney!
@dani cali can you back up your claim by any measure? I'm not mad, just genuinely curious!
Lemmy putting out his cigarette in his drink when he saw that his baby was there, that is just the greatest. What a loving, respectful, kind man he was. Absolute legend. Love you Lemmy!

Jimmy Griffin lol yea I'm cracking the fuck up that was too funny ko
When Is That?

Can relate with you there, when I had a motorcycle crash a couple years back, and it was after Lemmy had passed, I remember his interview about bringing a guy out of a motorcycle crash, then while I was basically in a deep rest, he said to me "You're not dyin yet, you still got a life to live" and then I woke up in the hospital, though still having a horrible anxiety attack and being in sever pain, that brought me to tears cause it felt real to me
That's an awesome story that I'm sure not many can tell.

We all know Dave Grohl won’t read this but Dave, you are a magician with words.
@@sahasrahlamusic9068 They weren't "dear friends." Dave had developed some legitimate frustration and animosity with Kurt.
Best drummer I've ever met, probably the most genuine person I've ever talked to, and by far the best friend I've ever had in my life jumped off an overpass last year. He showed me most of the music I listen to now and got me into Motorhead. This bowl's for you, Chris.
So sorry about your friend.
Suicide is so hard . My son died from suicide/depression. It is different than death be illness or accident. The person wants to end their pain, but instead they just transferred it to their family and friends. I’m very sorry about your friend.
Peggy Burke you might have just saved my life.
@@VanessaAlaskanGodess Did she save your life?
Big Dave taking it day by day but I’m still here🙃
"Who's more badass than Little Richard???"
DUDE. YOU. MET. LEMMY. KILMISTER.
nobody lemmy worshipped Little Richard. Same attitude. Same heart.
Good Golly Miss Molly
"Imagine being black AND gay in Macon, Georgia."
-Lemmy
I saw Lemmy at the Rainbow in Hollywood in 2008 (apparently he was there every day). I walked by him and said “Hey, Lemmy”. He simply responded by saying “Oi”. My coolest rock n roll story...
"...he bridged my love of AC/DC, Sabbath and Zeppelin with my love of GBH, The Ramones and Black Flag..."
Dave's a genuine human being.
Dave is such a legend. So down to earth. Lemmy, you will be missed. Rock n Roll. Forever 😐😑
If this speech didn't melt your heart, then surely you do not possess one. Great eulogy Dave
It's incredible how his funeral was ultimately a celebration of life.
Dave is one of the coolest and kindest and most genuine people in music, I never cease to be impressed by him. Total class act.
Kurt, Little Richard and Lemmy. So many people in the industry have died on Dave and he’s still the nicest guy in the industry.
Now Taylor too.
