It's amazing how I've been playing for 12 years with some fairly big gigs every now and then, yet Gabe's videos always teach me something or makes me think of things in a whole different way
Same here mate, I've been playing for a long time and I also play gigs but that's the beauty of drumming is you never stop being a student. There's always more to learn.
1:52 #2 and #3 are what is sometimes referred to as oblique motion (one hand moves). #4 can be either parallel motion (hands move together) or contrary motion (hands move apart). I think it helps to split #4 that way, as it has a much broader range of possibilities compared to the other steps. And then of course there's the implied final step, which is using the previous steps in various combinations. You could structure your practice to do all possible permutations of 2 steps, then 3, etc. to provide more focus there as well.
I won't lie, I would definitely practice to master drum fills if it meant my head would be shaved otherwise haha. Always appreciate the inspiring lessons and accessibility here man!
Great video Gabe! As a beginner drummer I find this is quite helpful for us to create more creativity with the basic stickings. It may look easy because it is singles, but we can create something impressive and lastly become your own signature.Love and wave from Malaysia!
This is also super useful for anyone who isn’t a drummer but is making music at home. I’ve been looking for ways to make the drums I write more interesting and this video couldn’t have been more of a lifesaver.
Only recently found your channel and it is pretty Damn insane the progress im making. I could play somewhat decent after years of being a table drummer, occasional bits of playing on friends kits and such. But you’ve opened up so much information in a super easy to follow way. I’m making huge progress. Love you bro.
I've been stuck thinking too much about hitting toms and accents rather than thinking about patterns and using kicks for more things than accenting. Definetely will watch again while on my drumset. big thanks!
The way he takes the time out to explain each part, small or big is really helpful. probably why he has a but ton of subs. that and his sense of humour.
I have naturally noticed then when I’m at my peak moment both my hands are moving around the kit and creating life, this is a recent development for me and it came naturally…glad to come across it in your video
Bro I just figured out that I'm playing drums for my school concert on Thursday and I only have five days to make up multiple drum fills and this has helped a lot
This is the kind of tutorial on fills im looking for! Im very grateful to watch it for free, im broke so i only air drum for practice and try to apply the learnings on our church drums once a week
I came across your channel when I wanted to learn the double bass. Well I couldn't afford it but I really liked your video. So I just keep scrolling through your channel and with every video I learn something new and cool so Thank you!!
This is one of the best videos about drumming that I have ever seen. You explain a lot of things that are very important. Its full of knowledge. Congrats and thanks for the great channel and for not to be selfish with your knowledge.
Thank you for these awesome tips. I just started learning the drums (at 59). These tips will help me not feel overwhelmed. Along with the other techniques of accents and rudiments will work.
really awesome vid !! gonna send this to all my intermediate drummer friends bc this is a great in-depth and step by step explanation for all the fill related questions they keep throwing at me
You are a very good teacher, indeed my kind (observing and giving importance to details and for new possibilities instead of doing things just fast asf thinking its cool that people don't even understand). But sadly I don't have a drum set tp practice...🙏❤️🔥
This just changed the way I approach creativity on the kit. I've seen this principle set forth before but it's something about the way you've presented it that has made all the difference. Thank you for all you do. I will be visiting often! :D
One of the most common things among my students it's the lack of flexibility they have with their ideas. Displacements is the first step in my view. A 16th note based idea has 4 basic possibilities, but even more if you think of starting that idea on ANY of those 16ths. This will not only expand your vocabulary ( with one idea as your starting point) but allows you to shape that idea to SERVE THE MUSIC. If you took 1 simple idea and worked on displacing it, playing it in different rates, in different time signatures, different dynamics etc you´ll be amazed at how much you can grow and how much deeper your rhythmic understanding gets. Thanks for your videos Gabe, keep it up!
I always told my students once they mastered some sticking patterns "get mileage" out of those. Just move the patterns to different tonalities of the drum set.
Okay, but Alex had to have had some kind of drumming experience. No one in my life with no drum experience was that rhythm literate when they first got behind a set.
Late but, I love watching your videos, I learned a lot from your videos, it is really helpful for me that has no money to take drum lessons. Love you man, looking forward for videos
I'm not so sure step 4 (1:53) was just RLRL... seemed like there was some doubles, syncopation, changes in rhythms and note values... it was a huge leap from the previous steps.... also, it had a backing track.
This is a big help for me specially because I just started as a worship drummer in our Church. I'm still afraid of doing some fills that's why I stick with the simple fills... I really want to practice more fills and now I'm so hyped up because of this. It's just sad that i can afford the online school 😅 but Videos like this really helps! Thank you so much! ❤❤❤ -newbie dummer from Philippines
A truly noble pursuit. I've been in the church band since i was a teenager. Remember you play for God, not the audience, not the expectations of others. NEVER be afraid to express yourself. Be guided by the Spirit and he will teach you. Some of my best fills i miraculously learned on the fly during moments of worship.
this is very similar to music theory in the concept of melody creation where you create something unique but then resolve at the end with something similar or recalled from the song.
Thanks for sharing your technique to public, Inappreciated that. Just that its hardv having a kit in the house and jamming is bit hard hese times of Covid
Gabe i just watched this video again coz i was getting overwhelmed just looking at the Trinity College exam pattern. I hope the offer that u mentioned is coming out on 08/08 is still happening.
If I was a drummer I'd feel like I just found a cheat code to getting a lot better! Excellent video! I'm sharing to all my partners in crime lol. Cheers
You missed the final step: dynamics. Accenting different notes makes the same sticking sound like completely different rhythms. This is also a big part of the reason why different sticking patterns work: different sticking patterns make it more natural to move the accent to a different note.
Thanks you Gabe !! Got much new fills and groove to learn from your channel ✨ keep uploading video constantly for letting us to learn more and open up 😁
I loved my DBO account and lessons, but coming up on 2 years unemployed, not by choice, I had to make some serious financial cuts. Got to love living in the strongest economy of all times!

I know this video was on fills but what I really like is how you embellish your grooves. do you have videos on that?

Double bass and fills have always been my kryptonite!! I wish I could afford these lessons!!

🤘🤘🤘
Wow I really needed this video for my fills ! Awesome editing , super fun to watch
Glad you liked it!!
complicated stuff may seem wow to someone, but for me, playing a simple thing with good knowledge of tone, dynamic & context sounds really wow... !
Bro I just figured out that I'm playing drums for my school concert on Thursday and I only have five days to make up multiple drum fills and this has helped a lot
Looking forward to using this in my teaching/learning.
Excellent lesson. Orchestration does make simple fills much more interesting. First video I've see that demonstrates this so well.
Thanks for posting!

1:54 bro i am in love with this. I couldn't even imagine that fill is simple RLRL
It took me over ten minutes into the video to realize your brother was playing in a bathroom lmao
I'd say he's a drummer now. Held a tight pocket and nailed his fills while maintaining the beat . Transitions were seamless. Bravo!
woooooww!!! thanks!! I will practice this today, looks like really fun :D
this video helped me thru a sticking point.took time to get a smooth-flow.but a,b,c lesson very helpful.thanks GABE,😃
I can see my drumming improving by watching your vids over the years. Thanks Gabe! 🤘🏻

The video looks so cool, great job with color grading!!! And also a very informative one, thanks!!
Thanks for the tip about using the odd sticking pattern at the start of the fill followed by something more simple. I'm going to give it a whirl!
thx for helping realize how much more i can improve
This was a huge help to a non-drummer that needed to program some fills. Solid rudiments, combined together. Great job.
