Hey Gabe, I don't know if someone told you before but you have the greatest cinematography over all of YT drum channels. Love the editing, transitioning, pacing, lighting, camera work and creativity most of all! Keep going!
As a fairly experienced drummer, my tip for beginners is to try open hand drumming. Open hand basically means that you play the hi-hat with the left hand and the snare with the right. And also if you have a crash on the left side use that with your left hand as well. Getting used to open hand drumming can vastly increase your left hand’s independence and when playing fast your left hand will probably be next to something that you want to hit. An exercise I recommend for this is to try playing a standard 4/6 time signature beat on the hi-hat with the snare on the 4th beat and bass on the first, and play this entire thing with only your left hand. This will not only increase the amount your left hand can do (which can be helpful down the line for faster fills) it can also strengthen your left hand considerably, making your weak hand a very capable tool at your disposal. Also remember if you struggle with this, as this dude said, slow it down, then once you get the hang of it, slowly speed up.
I'm right handed, but I do this! I didn't know that it had a term, open-handed. I sometimes have trouble keeping my right hand from following the pattern of the kick drum, but the left has no such problem, so I often use my left hand for when I need a slower, steady rhythm.
I would also like to weigh in on the heel up vs. down thing: It has always come naturally to me to play heel up. Some years into my training as a drummer, I started noticing some people do heel down and I actually got the impression at a certain point that it's the opposite: down is good, up is bad. But I had already developed my technique so much with heel up I said "well I guess I'm going to be doing it 'wrong' for the rest of my life because I can't go back now." When I got to the point in the video where you said heel up is good, heel down is bad, I about jumped out of my chair! Then I did some research and I agree with others who posted saying "it depends on genre" and "it's not all about speed." And, as of such, when I finally make the leap into Jazz drumming, I'm always going to go heel down.
I feel like the heel up or heel down motion on your kick pedal should be based on what kind of music you play. For instance, when playing jazz you would rather play with heel down than heel up, because with heel down you can play much more consistent and silent on the basdrum what you really want for jazz. But when playing rock or such you should play with heel up like tou said so it's much more louder. Nice video dude
More info in 10 minutes than most vids provide in double the time, plus it's done in an entertainig way. A special shout out to your editing, makes a huge difference.
I had a metamorphosis in my drumming over the past 2 years. I spent a year grinding hours of practice a day all alone during the pandemic in preparation to gig. Playing with new musicians for the first time was intimidating and challenging but after a year of gigging and jamming I’ve developed soooo much comfort, confidence, and creativity where I can write effortlessly when working with new artists. While the year of solitary practice allowed me to hone physical skills like doubles on kick and stick control/chops, performing and socializing has completely upped my mental game.
I have been drumming for 5 years and you have highlighted some key points that I have been doing wrong even as an intermediate, thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate you sacrificing precious time and effort to help support and guide up and coming drummers!!!
a song i really like to play on drums (even tho it's basic) is "smells like teen spirit" it has fast parts and slow parts so it's diverse and will be good practice for most drumming. if you're a beginner you should try it but don't feel pressured to play it exactly like dave grohl tho😂
Interesting to hear you say that most drummers do not start off playing with songs, because that's how I literally began. I wanted to play what I heard, and I still want to play what I hear. On a FFDP kick rn 🤘
I think it's somehow far more encouraging to show that you didn't make your fast time goal but kept practicing until you nailed it. That's awesome motivation!
I really like this guy's channel. I get tons of ideas from him, and he's a beast! So, just because I may disagree with something he says, doesn't mean I don't have admiration and respect for what he does. His comparison about guitarists jamming together, doesn't translate to drummers. Two tigers can't live on the same mountain. We are solitary by nature of what we do. Embrace your alone time.
I had a really tough time playing drums a few years back, i was unmotivated to play, didn't find it fun, didn't want to go to lessons or anything like that. Nowadays I'm really thankful i didn't quit because drumming has become so much more fun and i really just thank myself for not quitting drums.
out of all the humdreds of confusing , too much to chew beginners videos ive watched , these got me so much more interested, this video definitely put me on. imlooking forward to saving up and joining DBO academy !
MAN!!!! Every time I come back to your videos the cinematography gets BETTER AND BETTER. Not to mention te drumming advice haha. Great content keep it up
The thing I found which I found before I watched this video is playing with other people for around 3 years I played by myself and had little passion for drumming and practiced very little, but soon I went to a new school where people wanted to play with me and actually played for a school concert and this made me improve extremely quickly as I was practicing every day for almost an hour, with or without them along with weekly 30 minutes lessons it helped me improve so much and I was lucky to have that please play with people
im really lucky as a drummer cuz i and my friends started learning instruments at the same time so we play together and just support each other love em
To anyone thinking about joining DBO academy i would highly recommend it. I got the lifetime membership its been such an awesome tool for progressing fast behind the drums.
I never quit drums when I was a beginner Even though I struggled A wise person told me You can do anything as long as you work hard and believe in yourself
Gabe, this was the most engaging, entertaining, easy to watch video on drummer ever. I’m slowly on my drumming journey and need inspiration left and right and this was just a good ol punch of it. Thank you.
Always appreciate these videos to encourage beginners (and anyone really) to keep bettering themselves at drums. It's truly a wonderful instrument if you take the time to improve
Thanks for all the lessons man. I have a better understanding of what to do now. Even though I don't have a drum kit I''m still excited to learn the beats and grooves. Keep up the good work
I 'liked' this based on the 10 Reasons Why I Ain't Mis-makin My Progress, and you said 8 when I was watching. Nice to see Travis playing fun music and you make two great points so far!
I wish Gab will be invited to Drumeo one day to give some tips and lessons for all drummers around the globe!! Your way in giving the lessons suits the way for a beginner to be teached and taught.
Thanks for reminding me about the slow repetition for a minute at least. I feel sorry for my family members when I do this, though. I don't have a dedicated, sound proofed room , I just have my lounge. I know I must do this, though, because I practise my sticking this way. I love playing along with songs, it's such fun! There's no way I'm going to be discouraged at any stage, I'm putting in the work for as long as I've got. Thanks for your vids.
10:14 Thats how dark it gets to me everytime I go down to the basement to practice/play something...at least the radio is the only companion I have...but yes, still lonely. Thanks for recognize the ups and down, I feel better ....lol 😅
Hey Gabe, recently discovered your videos and am hugely impressed. The work you put into the scripting, filming, editing, graphics and inserts is phenomenal, not to mention the excellent and helpful content itself. That's a LOT of work and it's much appreciated. Good luck with the channel. Subscribed!👍👏
I'm not sure if it's too fast, but I've been playing for literally a week, and I've already started incorporating songs to play along too, and most importantly I record it. Trust me when you listen back you'll hear what you need to work on but also you'll see what you've started to get good at and it'll help encourage you. Keep drumming my brothas!!!
What a nice refresher!! Gabe your videos are as much entertaining as enlightening, that beard and that sneeze 😂. Thank you so much for all you do and making us better drummers ! You rock! 🤘😎✌
You're right! You always should play a beat er song like you really mean it but that doesn't mean you need to play it overload. I feel like lot of drummers like to play really hard and than they play a gig in a restaurant or coffeeshop or something and they play overload and the people start to leave. Also it can be very annoying when you rehearse in a smal room with a drummer that plays way to load. So I think a drummer should also learn to play silently on the kit. To me it shows you have control over your kit, your sound, your body and it shows skill.
I had to go back and practice my constancy and dynamics because I had no discipline and thank God that I was able to notice this early one it’s been 2 years and the progress has been mind blowing thanks to all your videos
Honestly, just put some jams on and go, I played in high school percussion through college but nothing had a bigger impact than listening to music and jamming along. Different genres, styles and tempos, the more diverse the better. Carter Beauford was a game changer, right-handed players forcing the open hand really opens doors!
I always love how you execute and render those tricky complicated beats and chops in a more understandable ways. Been watching your Videos man since my very first training in drum set❣️. Salute to you bro, been drumming on our church for 5 years now. Thank you dude, God bless you! Regards from your fan in the Philippines ❣️
Great job all all that you do. Always another great informative video. Make sure you get on the list everyone. Gabe is an amazing teacher. Second year in, and i love it. I can not wait to see you in KC. Got my ticket soon as they dropped. Be nice if you guys had a VIP pass. Would get that in less then a heart beat. It is going to be an amazing show. Also thank you for the free year lesson. It is a huge honor.
So glad that you're enjoying your time in DBO Academy! Congrats on the free year! What email is your account linked with so we can get you your free year!
I hate heel up! Try as I might I just can’t get a single hit on the kick drum if I’m heel up and burying the beater. I always get a second one after the beater bounces off the head, like a fraction of a second later. Heel up bouncing the beater is also a no-go, I’d have my leg floating mid air the entire duration of my playing, which would throw off my balance and wear out my leg fast.
Great, now I need to watch this again. I spent too much time laughing on the 1st take. Drumming is great, but drumming and humor are even better. Great tips, I'm definitely guilty of doing a few of those.
about that jamming part around 4 months in i started jamming to... dream theater i know, wtf i obviously wasn't able to play their songs, but i tried, had fun and learned tons of fills and tricky beats in the process so yea, i'd say if you have fun you'll learn faster just because its all positive and pleasant
My only critique is that you talk about the heel-down kick drum technique as if it is inherently bad and hinders playing. It has its place in drumming, and I would argue that a proficiency in heel-down and its applications is just as important as heel-up.
Wow... Am getting straight to the 🥁 and hey, how can I get that music instrumental that you just played when showing a drum beat so that i can practice
How do you feel about using a electronic kit with clone hero to help familiarize yourself with using/ getting more comfortable on a kit and having the fun of playing with songs and keeping up with bpm but also taking the time to practice by itself and using a metronome. Obv everyone learns differently, but being new to drumming, i dont want to pick up hard to break habits.
Hi gabe, love the video! I was wondering if you could do a video on Matt Healders from the arctic monkeys? Hes an insane drummer and hes super underrated
Hey can you tell us how do you record the songs and all with drums please. As i want to record my drums but I am not able to with my earphone connected
Dude your drum playing on body bag! Mans it was fucking insane man! I was having a feeling from the video being dark blue that it was gonna be a banger!
Well it's been a year I started playing drums and I still don't have any drum kit, but I have a practice pad and drum a pair of drum sticks but it's still fun to use I have learnd those things because of these things
Consistent practice is better than the occasional hours long marathon. Sometimes I find I just can't get something down one day, while something else just clicks and feels easy. Then the next day, the difficult thing feels easy but that easy thing just isn't working. But over time, they'll come together
I ask every drumming channel I come across this question if I watch more than 1 video, do you have any tips for a broke drummer to practice double bass without access to a pair of bass pedals? the floor doesn't give the same kind of feedback and I feel when I'm air drumming to a song that I raise my foot/leg too high the last time I have even sat behind a kit was when my friends and I tried to start a band about 9 years ago
Tip for new drummers - PLAY. Don't spend time studying "Beat number 12" and Paradiddles without playing them. Find a song, play along, and listen. It doesn't even have to be your favorite artist or band - anything will do. Every drummer you've ever heard, from Dave Ghrol to Danny Carey, John Bonham to Jeff Procaro (excuse mispell), they all make the song better. Find out how they do it, and how YOU can do it as well.
I wish I could practice drums every day, the problem is I don't have a drum set, and I haven't been able to play drums in our church for almost 6 years. I wish I could go back to playing again because my dream is to be a professional drummer like you sir. but until it's really a dream and I just watch it on youtube when I miss playing drums😔, btw your content is good sir it's very clear and you can really learn something compared to other videos on youtube. Godbless you always sir.

I really appreciate the kind words!! Thanks so much!
Not greatest but best.......and I think you dodn't know who Matt Mac guire is...
I’m a cinematographer and I approve!
I agree with this!!
Has the same style as Daniel Bernard
As a fairly experienced drummer, my tip for beginners is to try open hand drumming. Open hand basically means that you play the hi-hat with the left hand and the snare with the right. I'm left-handed and did this from the start. It's so much easier to do fills and stuff!
thank you so much!
i'm a left handed person but i just played right handed but i wanna try to play open handed cus it might be better for me
I'm left handed but want to play the bass drum with my right foot. It makes setting up the kit awkward lol
I'm right handed, but I do this! I didn't know that it had a term, open-handed. I sometimes have trouble keeping my right hand from following the pattern of the kick drum, but the left has no such problem, so I often use my left hand for when I need a slower, steady rhythm.

Tell Thomas Lang that heel down is wrong... he is switching from heel up to heel down to heel up again. And in "metal" kind of music too!
I feel like the heel up or heel down motion on your kick pedal should be based on what kind of music you play. Aspiring drummer. Working on getting a kit. Love the videos
I’ve been teaching myself drums the last year and 3 months and MAN I’m relieved I only do 1 of these bad habits which is my posture
Also 8 is a big one! Having a drum off with someone you know is better helped me soooo much
Man- excellent video. Started playing about 2 mins this ago and did /do almost every one of these habits. Thanks for the tips!

Dude your drum playing on body bag! Mans it was fucking insane man! I was having a feeling from the video being dark blue that it was gonna be a banger!
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I love your videos dude.
Thank you so much and big up from Portugal!
I’ve never even considered heel down before. I can’t wait to time both heal down and up 😂 I feel out on your channel 🤙🏽
Ik in not the only one who has played for years and is far away from that beginner level yet still watched everything 😂😂
Awesome video Gabe, thank you so much!
My pleasure!
Well it's been a year I started playing drums and I still don't have any drum kit, but I have a practice pad and drum a pair of drum sticks but it's still fun to use I have learnd those things because of these things
Heck yes! Keep up the great work!
These videos just keep getting better and better
❤️❤️
I appreciate the amount of effort you put into the production.
I love the humor in the vid. Makes this more entertaining to watch lol.
I play for at least an hour a day and I've kept it up for halve a year so I'm taking his idea and throwing it out the window😅
Consistent practice is better than the occasional hours long marathon. Sometimes I find I just can't get something down one day, while something else just clicks and feels easy. Then the next day, the difficult thing feels easy but that easy thing just isn't working. But over time, they'll come together
production in this video is 100% smashed it omg 10/10
What kind of heads do you use?
I wish I could practice drums every day, the problem is I don't have a drum set, and I haven't been able to play drums in our church for almost 6 years. I wish I could go back to playing again because my dream is to be a professional drummer like you sir. but until it's really a dream and I just watch it on youtube when I miss playing drums😔, btw your content is good sir it's very clear and you can really learn something compared to other videos on youtube. Godbless you always sir.
