  • It could only be us that got sick on the Belmond Andean explorer.. Peru's most luxury train...
Join us as we travel on South America's FIRST ever luxury sleeper train the Belmond Andean Explorer for 48 hours - 3 days and 2 nights across Peru. Starting in Arequipa and travelling over 700 kms and various towns to Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire and the start of Machu Picchu.
This has to be one of the world's most epic train journeys, and we'll show you every detail of the experience. From a tour of our premium-first class double cabin (bedroom) which comes with ensuite bathroom.. and believe it or not, a private shower on board piano room where they serve cocktails and canopies, suitable for a king.
We try the various food options available in the dining car including three and four course menus.
We also get the chance to briefly get off the train after we traverse the highest plains of the Andes before arriving at the reflective beauty of Lake Titicaca to visit a local community living on the most incredible floating villages at Puno station - the half way point.
Our aim is to give you an insight into this experience and what it's really like to spend three days on South America's first ever luxury sleeper train.
*spoiler alert - it was kind of rough due to the altitude sickness!
BUT you'll soon see why Peru has gone all out to create a beautiful, hand crafted train offering breathtaking views of the the most epic scenic route in Peru and also why the railroad itself is such an engineering achievement.

    How posh are we?!
Believe it or not this train cost a whopping 16 million dollars to build!

As a person living at high altitude in Huaraz, Peru and organising tours and treks at high altitude for the last 12 years, my advice is not to take any pills, but rather to avoid alcohol and drink coffee in moderation and instead to drink plenty of water and coca tea (at least 3 litres per person per day). TBH I am surprised that they would serve so much alcohol on a train like this (a recipe for disaster) and that the nurse did not offer better advice to avoid altitude sickness.

Right up our street guys. Absolutely brilliant.
Must tell you the story about the reed village. We saw Flying the Nest visit one such village. And when they were leaving on this boat, the villagers started waving and singing a song. I thought it was something local. But then the Bunny joined in!! I asked how did she know the song. It turned out to a 1983 disco hit in Spain by Italian duo Righeira called Vamos a la playa (Let's go to the beach). I wondered how did villagers on reed islands know the song. If they all had big radios like the one in your video, then there's your answer.
