"all design rules" -- Surely design rules are man made, so the rule proposed in the video is equally valid? So clearly "all" design rules do not require only front legs to be on the rug? (A full floor carpet won't create zones within a room. It will just give the room a different flooring, which is not the point of the rule proposed in this video.)

The are not created arbitrarily, there are formulas that humans find to be innately aesthetica,lly pleasing. Of course you can break rules if that's your preference, they are only guildlines. 6x9 or 9x12, either is good. All on or all off. The 6x9 did a good job of pulling the elements together and still showed lots of hardwood. Informal, casual, relaxed. 9x12 with all of the furniture sitting on it gives a more serious look.

Hi Emily! I love your videos! However, I noticed that all the rugs in this video have an off white background within the patterns mostly. All the patterns look good with the hard wood flooring, but what color rug would you pair with white tile flooring? I'm having a hard time choosing. I would really appreciate your advice! Thanks!
Totally wrong size!!! You've got beautiful hardwood floors and yet you cover most of it with a 9x12. The 6x9 rug was the perfect size. It reaches the furniture.and brings everyone comfort. AND you'd show your floors.

What if you're trying to protect a really vintagey, really expensive to replace, wooden floor made in 1906? It's got a pattern of dark wood all throughout the honey colored wood.. so irreplaceable and I have kids..

I noticed the end table is partially on the area rug and partially off. I’m assuming that is OK? We are buying an area rug for our lanai and will come to this dilemma between the two sizes.

This is an awesome video, Emily, but I have a troubling question! My fireplace hits at a weird spot in the room, such that if I center a rug for the conversation area, it isn't centered with the fireplace. This drives me crazy. Should I just ignore that and prioritize seating?
