Yes! I would love to see a rug sourcing video. Maybe broken down by pricing and/or materials. Thank you for your videos. I have learned so much from watching them.
Totally agree with yr motto - Buy well, cry once. Wool rugs are EVERYTHING. I own 2, you're right they look brand new after shampooing. I recently stored one I've had for about 12 yrs. I literally shampooing it 5x, letting it dry between each shampoo. It is immaculate. So worth the money if you can make that splurge. You'll eventually spend the same amount on replacing multiple "throw away" rugs.

I really learned a lot here. Especially the comparison of different materials like silk, wool, polyester and where they work best in the home. I was buying polyester for kitchen area but learned on my own that not a good fit for me as I cannot clean them with any water and I prefer not to throw them away.

Your illustrated pictures make your videos fantastic. A picture does saves a thousand words. Your tips and suggestions help us so much with design questions and suggestions. Thank you!
The info on materials and care was really helpful. A sourcing guide would be great! I’ve been hunting for a large (10x13 or 11x14) living room rug and it’s been a challenge to find a style, material, price and size wanted. Specifically I’m curious about wool Moroccan, Turkish, Aztec type styles in neutrals but I’ll be replacing more rugs soon so any sourcing info would be valuable.
Standard sizes are 9x12, 11x13, 12x15 Kelly. Anything in between is usually custom. Filter the rug sizes from any of the vendors I linked in the description box. These sizes are more expensive of course in the materials you listed, but worth it when you’ll have it forever!
yes please I would love even more suggestions of styles and what colors/textures would look good in a rug to add to an already furnished neutral living space!
Anything you like! That’s the beauty of a neutral space- you can go wild! I would look to Pinterest for inspiration and allow your favorite spaces to help guide you

thank you!! i have an open space and already have a beautiful area rug in the living room that im obsessed with…so obsessed that I almost checked out my Amazon cart which contained a second rug for my dining room. Right before placing the order I decided to come to RUclips and see what designers say about such move; I just knew something was questionable about having the same rug for the living room and dining room in an open space. Thank you!
This video was super helpful Julie! And practical. No rug in the dining room. One subject that I struggled with a corner fire place for a few years. It's located in a small (about 13 X 14 ft) open-concept living room with hard wood flooring. I used overlapping identical circular rugs, which actually was ok for a while. Last year, I had carpeting store professionals make one that defined the seating area, and that corner fireplace. It wasn't nearly as expensive as I imagined--less than $1500 with padding. My stress level is less too. : ) An expense for sure, but ok if I stay a long while in my house ; and some options if it's in good condition when moving. Sell to new buyer, or someone in neighborhood with same floor plan.
A lot of times custom carpet is less expensive than a large area rug KBS- most people are afraid to hear “custom” but I do it all the time for irregular and oversized spaces. Great call 🙌🏻
Loved this video. Haven’t been able to find a simple video on this topic. Helps a ton! I also like your warm, slightly olive toned skin color! You would look GREAT in more muted colors 🧡🤎
Great tips! I appreciate it. I was agonizing about matching in my great room or not. I had the feeling I should avoid being "matchy" but wondered what designers tend to do and this video was the answer. :) Thank you.
Wonderful info, thank you. Word of caution with wool rugs or any animal fiber rug...your dogs will be highly attracted to these very expensive rugs, and.. impossible to professionally remove stains. I go with cheaper fiber rugs so it doesn't hurt as much!😂
I'm glad we didn't pull the trigger last night while rug shopping. Gave me the opportunity to find this video and learn before mistakes were made. Now I understand why some of those rugs were super cheap and why some were eye popping expensive. Guess I'll get ready to clinch my teeth and buy an expensive rug.
Love this video!! Made me rethink what kind of rug I need and it’s going to look amazing thanks to your help! I would love a similar style video about TV stands/cabinets. I feel it’s so hard to come by one that looks good!
I finally set up my antique Anatolian rug the other day and it helped take my living room design from like 30% complete to about 85%. A nice rug, vintage or new makes a big difference for living rooms.
Hi Julie this video is right on time. I changing out the floors in my bedroom from carpet to LVP and didn't know what size rug to purchase nor did I know what fabric. I will refer to this video when shopping. Thanks a million.
I've just bought a second-hand turkish rug, which I'd hoped was wool, but it's 100% synthetic. I've clean it using upholstery shampoo and a wet vac and it looks like new now.
Julie, do you recommend Ruggable or any other machine-washable rugs? Some people such as with pets, asthma, allergies, or sensitivities may only want machine-washable rugs. Reviews of Ruggable I saw (I looked for non-sponsored reviews) said cons of bad customer service, slow shipping, bad return policy. Yet is machine-washable, cheaper than many, and can use double-sided tape and/or steamer to hopefully solve any curling edges plus Ruggable said they have improved the edge-curling.
Julie desperately need the sourcing video on are rugs! I have spent 2 weeks trying to decide which one I need for the various spaces and from where to purchase them from! Please do make the sourcing video!
You look so fresh and so much energy. This video is just so timely. I just came from Crate & Barrel. Wow, the rugs were so expensive but the designs were unique and awesome. Loved this video🙏🏽😘👏
Twice a year I take the polyester area rugs out in the driveway, wet, spray with Mean Green, scrub with hard broom, rinse.......always come clean. I throw over a chain link fence to dry, Florida does a good job of that. Vacuum all the time with 6 cats & dog, spot clean if necessary. Only rug I would have.
Another great video, Julie - thank you! This one gives more explanation into the rug concepts you share in past videos, which confirmed some of my choices I made with your guidance & is helping me navigate new ones. I found the advice on entryways & kitchens especially helpful, as well. So sweet to see you glowing with your precious baby bump, too…
Thank you so much Michelle! I definitely wanted to dive deeper into area rug concepts so each video can complement the previous basic guides. Thank you for noticing 🙏🏻☺️

Hi dear how to place rugs in a living room where the sofas are facing different directions? Should i go for two different rugs or customise rug for the whole living room ? 🤔
Thankyou for all your tips on area rugs. I should have gotten rug first before my furniture. My furniture color is Pewter and I am still looking for a rug.
Omg just the video I was looking for! I have wall to wall beige carpet in my rental unit. I want to add a terracotta hue rug on top of it, since its carpet over carpet do I still need to follow the rule of fitting all the furniture on top of the rug I will add? I see in the last section that the rug over carpet didnt cover all the furniture hence the question :) Also should the tv table come over the carpet too? I have a 10 foot space between my sofa and the tv table
Thank you Julie for another great video! I am currently in the process of replacing my formal dining and living room rugs(I am tired of them), but I have put it off since I would have to re-paint and hang new art that would be cohesive with the new rug. Right now everything blends well together... So I am stumped. The videos help. So I may tackle this in the Summer. The dining room table is heavy though and will be a bugger to move. So part of the reason for the delay. I too buy the rug first and then paint... Easier to do this then find the perfect affordable rug that works with the design style. 😊
@@JulieKhuu I also tied the art in with the rug and paint. The dining room is a tastefull deep red and the rug matches it well. The art has cherry wood frames with original art(local well known artist L.R. Mongomery) and a print I found with a beautiful country scene with accents of fall colors(red, gold, yellow, bronze trees)with a warm bronze frame. The table is cherry with a mission style with beautiful graining(bought in the 1980's) seats six. I am an artist also and I have a new painting I just finished of my son and husband at the lake that I want to hang. It is hard to mesh colors together. I think I can use this painting in my living room? The walls are soft cream with a hint of yellow and the painting has the blue/green of the water--reddish cream/brown of the beach and green/brown treeline and crystal clear blue sky. I framed it myself in a warm brown wood and bronze. I am hoping it will work. I still have a light house painting that I did that I like, but still no place to hang it yet. More on the cool color side... I will figure it out... I just need to find the time to do it(I work full-time) 😊
Totally agree Julie about an are rug over wall to wall carpeting, especially when it's apartment grade drab carpeting to add some interest pattern and personality and to define a space, just as they are used over solid flooring. Hear often it's faux pas to do so but I disagree.
@@JulieKhuu agree completely!! My apartment has this drab brownish grey carpeting and I threw down rugs to cover that mess up! Thanks for your videos I love watching them on my mornings off with my coffee. Keep em coming!! What do you think about post modernism interior design making a come back?
Round rugs are great for round dining tables (same 36” clearance min), a single chair + side table, a focal point you want to highlight… just remember that whatever you put atop needs some breathing room and a sizable border. Don’t suffocate your furniture 👍🏻
Yes, if that’s your intent Carol. I like how a large area rug anchors the space, but I’ve seen it done with runners to have something soft to land on underfoot 👍🏻
I've seen a recent trend in going solid and textured in area rugs now. I do not care for jute as they are scratchy and uncomfortable on my bare feet when I get out of bed in the a.m. plus I have a large dog. I just bought an 8 X 10 ft. polyester rug for my bedroom. I have two twin mattresses (hospital type bed that moves up and down) that fit together to create a California King under the bed sham.
My soon to be apart apartment has honey/orangeish wood flooring, dark espresso wood cabinets, and dark greenish shade gray granite countertops. Im kind of at a loss on a color palate for pretty much everything. Any ideas for rug colors or anything else? I have no furniture so I'm trying to get the designing right the first time. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. Could i get your opinion on a rug i just recieved for my living room space? Need thoughts on if it looks right and if i got the right size.
I have a new three bedroom house with no furniture in it as of yet. Its rooms have what feels like a huge expanse of ceramic tile flooring. In keeping with your suggestions I am looking for area rugs first. Can you talk to us about cleaning and maintaining our rugs and floors? In your experience which rug shampooing machine can you recommend? Are robot sweepers a good investment? If any listeners have opinions, please comment. Thank you.
I have two robot vacuums and also a rug doctor which I use for 100% wool rugs. I love the combination- watch my video called Best Investments I’ve Made for My Home with detailed explanations on why I love them 😊
I like dark browns mix colors with tans maybe blues in area rug i wonder if dark paintings its too matchy-matchy? I was planning to purchase a dark area rug how i have dark abstract paintings at home now I’m having second thoughts…
Great information and very timely! Is there such thing as too many rugs...for example, when you step into my foyer there is the family room straight ahead with a rug on carpet to add color, a rug on hardwood in rooms to the right (billiard) & to the left (formal dining) and a rug in the foyer?
what shape rug are best to use in a living room, square or rectangle? besides the obvious what is the significant difference in choosing one or the other ?
I rarely ever specify square. Match the room dimensions. If the room is long, rectangular is great. If the room is perfectly even on all sides of you want a more “even” seating group, choose square
Julie, thanks. Really helpful video. Two quick questions if I may; 1. Is it ok to have all 4 feet of one piece of furniture and only two feet of others? 2. If there's an alcove in the middle of the room, is it best to distance the rug from the wall at either side of the alcove or the alcove itself? If I distance the rug 6 inches from the alcove it almost feels like the rug is too small. Thanks
Hi Shane! 1. Yes, sofa can be completely on the area rug 2. Feel it out. Depending on the size of the space, you might want to reduce this distance to 3” so the room feels more grand. Hope that helps!
Hi Julie, need your suggestion What carpet color should I choose for my dark brown wooden look tile floor? I have off white recliner and maroon satee in my living area.
In a music studio, would you plant the front legs of a grand piano on the rug. I'm assuming it needs to be at least big enough to remain under the bench, even when pushed out.
Great video! I have a large living room, and I want to tie in my furniture. However, my living room is carpeted with a short-shag rug. It looks like a should forgo a rug. Do you agree?
Hmm shag is tough since it’s so textured Jerry. Focus on the walls to help draw attention away from the flooring. Check out my video on how to create a stunning focal wall for your living room for more tips! 👍🏻☺️
hello Julie, I just found a great wool 8 x 10 area rug in TJ Max home goods here in california. Can I add a bit of blue dye to a few of the flowers in the patterned rug to bring in the blue grey of the walls?? the rug is shades of neutral gray.... Can I use a blue sharpie or light blue sharpie on the inside of the grey flower to turn it a blue gray instead of dye??? I cannot wash the dye out since it is a big rug and king bed sits on it...The spots I want to color are just the size of a dime!. thoughts please. love your blog love your taste and you are so very practical.. happy holidays, ellen.
Hi Ellen, I have never tried that actually. If it’s 100% wool, it will definitely “eat” the dye/ color, as opposed to nylon/ synthetic fibers. I would try a small corner first and see how it does or if you even like it
years ago, i bought a thick zebra striped rug from builder's square at an unbelievable price. probably one of the best home purchases i ever made. i have a few other beautiful large area rugs that i keep rolled up and every few years i resurrect them, and switch them out, b/c theyre timeless and i still love them! i also swap out the rugs with other rooms if i start getting bored with the look. it works for me. thanks for the useful tips, jk!

I just need to find the time to do it(I work full-time) 😊
Great examples and tips as always!
Thank you for watching Becky 🙏🏻☺️
AwesOMe tips, Julie!
Totally agree Julie about an are rug over wall to wall carpeting, especially when it's apartment grade drab carpeting to add some interest pattern and personality and to define a space, just as they are used over solid flooring. Hear often it's faux pas to do so but I disagree.
Short pile works beautifully with area rugs Miguel 👍🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu agree completely!! My apartment has this drab brownish grey carpeting and I threw down rugs to cover that mess up! Thanks for your videos I love watching them on my mornings off with my coffee. Keep em coming!! What do you think about post modernism interior design making a come back?
When would you choose a circular area rug ?
And does the same size guidelines apply to it ?
I have it for a recliner. Circular rugs look great with chairs or round tables.
Round rugs are great for round dining tables (same 36” clearance min), a single chair + side table, a focal point you want to highlight… just remember that whatever you put atop needs some breathing room and a sizable border. Don’t suffocate your furniture 👍🏻
Great tips, thanks, Julie!! 🥰
Thank you for watching Monica 🙏🏻☺️
I learned a lot from this video! Thanks👍
Thank you for watching Norma! 🙏🏻☺️
Julie if I don't want to purchase a full area rug, would it be ok to have a runner on either side of the bed? Thank you.
Yes, if that’s your intent Carol. I like how a large area rug anchors the space, but I’ve seen it done with runners to have something soft to land on underfoot 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu great to know. Thank you
Thank you for your blogs good blessed you

My goodness this video had so many helpful tips and suggestions. Nicely done! 👍

8x10 seems small for a Cal King- you need at least 12”-18” border around the bed
Thanks for the tips, polyester works best for me and I like geometric designs
Awesome, thank you for watching 🙏☺️
My soon to be apart apartment has honey/orangeish wood flooring, dark espresso wood cabinets, and dark greenish shade gray granite countertops. Im kind of at a loss on a color palate for pretty much everything. Any ideas for rug colors or anything else? I have no furniture so I'm trying to get the designing right the first time. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!
The video I've been looking for! Thank you!
Glad I could help! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for this video. Could i get your opinion on a rug i just recieved for my living room space? Need thoughts on if it looks right and if i got the right size.
Sure, send to me on IG 😊
Watching this video after purchasing matching rugs for my open concept living, sitting and dining areas 😩
If you love it, you’ll make it work. Just stay away from matching dining and living room sets
Please give us the ultimate sourcing guide.💕
I’ll work on it! Excited for this one! 🙌🏻☺️
Great video thank you!
Good video as always, thank you Julie! 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌷

Nope! As long as they all define their respected areas and add the color and warmth you’re after 👍😍
Awesome video and thank you for the ideas.
Thanks for watching Louise! 🙏😊
Very clear suggestions. Helpful video.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching Elizabeth 🙏🏻💕

Hi Julie Great video as always!!🤗
Thank you for watching Shar 🙏🏻☺️
what shape rug are best to use in a living room, square or rectangle? besides the obvious what is the significant difference in choosing one or the other ?
I rarely ever specify square. Match the room dimensions. If the room is long, rectangular is great. If the room is perfectly even on all sides of you want a more “even” seating group, choose square
Omg, the perfect explanation! Thank you 🙏
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻💗
Once again, I learned something new. Based in your wise advice I don't have a rug under my dining table.
I don’t have one under mine either Lori- my space is way too narrow to permit 👍🏻☺️
Hi Julie, need your suggestion
What carpet color should I choose for my dark brown wooden look tile floor? I have off white recliner and maroon satee in my living area.
Somewhere in between like tan/beige could be beautiful to add contrast between the finish and furniture
In a music studio, would you plant the front legs of a grand piano on the rug. I'm assuming it needs to be at least big enough to remain under the bench, even when pushed out.
I wouldn’t since the bench needs to be pulled in and out. I prefer hard flooring for this purpose
Thanks for the information, great video.
Thank you for watching Sophia 🙏🏻☺️
Thanks so much,☺️So glad I saw this!

I would try a small corner first and see how it does or if you even like it
If one does not find a big enough rug for the living room, would it be ok to buy two of the same rugs and place them together to make it seem bigger?
Yes, if the rugs are tone on tone and devoid of pattern, you can definitely make this work Swati. I like to custom cut carpet to make a large area rug
Thanks . I absolutely love your videos and suggestions.
years ago, i bought a thick zebra striped rug from builder's square at an unbelievable price. probably one of the best home purchases i ever made. i have a few other beautiful large area rugs that i keep rolled up and every few years i resurrect them, and switch them out, b/c theyre timeless and i still love them! i also swap out the rugs with other rooms if i start getting bored with the look. it works for me. thanks for the useful tips, jk!
Sounds fabulous Adrienne! That will be me one day, recovering furniture hoarder, newbie rug collector 😆 Takes up less space!
@@JulieKhuu 😄😘
Thank you for sharing these mistakes
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Very helpful. Should I buy the same rug for the bedroom and an attached sitting room or mix it up?
Mix it up, always! 👏🏻
I only get polypropylene rugs with pets. They shampoo up great and last for years and years. My wool rugs definitely are not as cleanable.
Julie this is a great video. My particular problem we are moving into a home that has heated floors. Will I still be able to use area rugs?
Yes, heated floors work best with wool and natural fibers Anne. Just make sure the rug pad you’re using is heat-resistant as well
thank u so much! i needed all these tips!
