I've designed a lot of kitchens and been brought in to "solve" kitchen issues from clients late in the game. This video is incredibly comprehensive and touches on the main items of consideration in the right process to follow when designing a kitchen. Only thing I would elaborate more on is the planning process/ coordination with contractor for the long lead time items (appliances, materials, cabinets etc.) so that a thorough schedule can be created based on ideal timeframe to start and ordering timelines worked backwards so that you're not left in a situation where progress on site is stalled because you are waiting on critical items to arrive -- this causes trades to go to different jobs and your timeline gets grossly stretched and difficult to get people back after a long lag.
I have been studying interior design part-time for 6 months, with a lot emphasis the last month on kitchen design. This video has been incredibly helpful and honestly I learned more in this 27 minute video about kitchen design than I have done in my course. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise in such a clear and concise way!! Such a useful video!
You are so right with your comments about hiring a designer! They are worth their weight in gold for a major kitchen remodel. Ours designed a dog feeding station, a cabinet for table leaves, a cubbie for a collapsible stool and a specific height for the microwave. Love this series!
@@JulieKhuu Contractors will always give you the cheapest option for them not the cheapest or best for you. But you can't always trust designers either especially if they sell you the things they recommend. Some decorators collect things as they go and put them in client's decor but they really care about the end result and give you great deals and do it so they can achieve a great look on a budget and most clients have a budget of some sort. Some decorators are out the rob you blind and will sell you stuff that is old and dated. A friend of mine had her house done by a designer who once owned a wallpaper store and she put up this hideous black and gold 80s paper in the early 2K and talked her into a black toilet as well. Her entire house screamed 80s closeout. I had a decorator sell me fabric that sells at Hobby Lobby for 12 a yard for 59 dollars a yard and she made me these tiny napkin sized window treatments with them for my daughter's room. She didn't listen to anything I wanted or my daughter wanted. The room was hideous. They talked me into furniture that was too big for the room and the textiles were just plain ugly. I still get angry when I think about it.
Contractors are ‘swayed’ by what other people are putting in their houses. If you want something different or not on trend, they will look skeptical or try to talk you out of it. It always make me second guess my decisions and sometimes, I have succumbed. Regrets include decorative tile accents over the basement bar where i originally wanted a clean wall of tile and a composite vanity top with integrated sink instead of granite. These haunt me daily and I will eventually spend the money to redo them. Spend the money up front and know what you want.
@@JulieKhuu hi julie.. been watching your videos and im a fan.. just love everything about your style. may you also include in your vlog a lampshade makeover pls.. been searching videos on lampshade makeover but cant find a good one.
I redid my home incl. The kitchen 6 months ago. I did the design myself and after 7 years of knowing what I needed changed and what annoyed me, it was pretty easy. I'm glad to see that I thought of all the things you mentioned - which is probably why my kitchen is my favorite space in the home. 😁
As a kitchen designer and cabinetmaker, I can only agree with the concepts outlined here. Also, I'm impressed with the photos of the kitchens shown. Great video.
Laundry room design. I mean a real working laundry room that is utilitarian and also has to store vacuum cleaner, mops, broom, and paper goods ( t.p., napkins, paper towels, etc).
Tell me about it. I have the worst designed laundry room in the world designed by a man Stephen Fuller- The Valleydale. It doesn't even have a sink so my husband brings all sorts of gross things to my kitchen sink to be cleaned.
FINALLY!!! You are the first person who has come up with sensible advice for planning a kitchen. It is obvious you use your kitchen to cook. In a few years I will be retiring and building my own home. Most of your advice is already in my plans. The work triangle is perfect, and the room will have plenty of work surface outside the triangle for things like cooking racks for baking. It will be a large kitchen with informal eating area. There will be zero open shelving. There will be glass fronted display cabinets arranged like a Welsh dresser in the eating area. The floor is going to be flagstone. The ceiling will be embossed tin painted with Benjamin Moore Impervo high gloss ultra white alkyd enamel. Yes, I have a pretty solid idea of what works for me, especially when baking for the holidays. Gingerbread houses take space.
Excellent line up of information with no unnecessary chatter in between. The knowledge you share is nowhere to find even in thousand books. Highly appreciate your work Julie!
I'm 16 and when I was 15 I set my mind to one day build my dream home from the ground up. And when I made the decision to one day build my own home, I instantly started making the floor plan (blueprint). I am of course long way from being done with it, as I keep on getting brilliant ideas and making changes to the plan. That's why I have started to watch these kinds of videos so I am informed and know not to make some ridiculous floor plan and layout. Also, tysm for your vids, am so glad I found u 🤗
I was just like you. Since I was like 15 I was dreaming of that little place of mine. Ten years later and I’ll be moving to my perfect place soon. Not house yet but quite spacious flat which I designed from a scratch. It gives so much satisfaction and gives such a confidence boost that you’ve collected knowledge about topic not connected to your field (im biotechnologist yet i love interior designing) and created it yourself. Keep dreaming 🥰
This was fantastic. I just wish. I would have stumbled on this 2 months ago. I am in the throws of putting in my dream kitchen that has been decades of waiting. I was blessed to have had a general contractor who put me in contact with a custom cabinet maker /kitchen designer from the beginning. I had several antique pieces to build around. This designer has been fabulous to work with, and he has helped me consider many of the things that Julie has identified. However there were still a number of things that Julie covered that are either confirmations that we are doing things the right way… or are mistakes that I still can avoid. This is my first and last kitchen design. Thank you Julie. Outstanding!
Thank you for mentioning the "insisting on an island" detail. I come across clients all the time who think it's no biggie to cram an island into their space, when in actuality, it's just not logical. It's just math, like you said. And the cart solution is a great thing to promote, as the availability of nicer carts has skyrocketed. Good job Julie. Keep it up.
Thank you for watching and the feedback Judy! Same here, my clients see a huge island on Instagram and always want the same when space doesn’t permit. 😆
About 5 years ago I ordered 2 inexpensive rolling expresso carts with cabinets and a wood top. Now the same carts are 3x more expensive. I love what Julie said about the carts--we separate the two sometimes or push them together and it looks like a buffet table. I would recommend the carts--you can put them in a dining area (or just one) if you have a small space. Mine look like its part of the dining room set.
I am doing the interior decoration of my newly purchased house and was at loss where to start and how to think about some of the design elements that fit my personality. I have been watching all your videos back to back and you have provided fair bit of very useful information in each of the videos. Now I am very clear as to how to approach the designing and putting the elements together. Must watch for anyone looking to remodel the living space or starting afresh. Great videos. Thanks a ton Julie!
Loved her video. Not critical of other people's tastes, but instead, she points out mistakes on design, measurements, structure, functionality and things of the sort, instead of just saying "this is out of style dont do it or use it". Very mature and professional show. I liked it!!
This is an excellent planning guide that covers pretty much everything I had to learn over the years by trial and error. On the topic of handles: Don't just avoid open ended handles if you don't want holes in your clothes, also avoid closed end ones with very pointy/sharp edges. Sure, they look cool and provide clear lines, but is it really worth it? Go for something more smoothed out, especially if you have small children or are planning to start a family (or expect grandchildren), as pointy cabinet handles are a hazard at eye level for toddlers. We are currently in the planning stage of a kitchen remodel (previous owners did a long, straight kitchen that makes cooking feel like a marathon because there is no work triangle, only a long, long line with the sink at one end, the stove and fridge at the other) and I feel very reassured now that I've seen that my current ideas for the space correlate as much with your guidelines as the fixed points (only wall that allows for a kitchen fan, placement of the water fixtures, doors, windows) allow.
Omg I LOVE how you give a road map for your videos and so thoughtfully organize your advice. It really reflects how thoughtful you are as a designer while also helping people learn how to think like a designer! Keep it coming
Thank you so much for watching and the feedback Charlie! It’s truly how I think as a designer. I aim to lay it out so that anyone can feel empowered to tackle their own remodels 🙌🏻
Your Kimono blouse is the most beautifull gown i have seen ! Would you tell me a place i could purchase something like this? I love it so much . And it looks glorious on you!
Since the kitchen is the room you go through usually first I need space to drop keys, mail etc without looking cluttered. Also I keep many handy tools in my "tool drawer" and I've created a medicine cabinet to store vitamin bottles and the like out of sight.
Loved that you gave real measurements for spaces. So helpful! Can you please do a video about hiring a designer/decorator? What a minefield! Some are free -- as long as you buy everything from them at full retail. Some charge a flat fee. Some just give advice, no designs. Do I really need to hire an architect? The kitchen, for example -- electrical, plumbing, gas -- is so expensive no matter what, so I want it done right. I don't mind paying for a designer, and I do have some of my own ideas (thanks to your videos!). I just moved to a new town, so I can't ask for referrals from friends. Please do a video on what to look for in a designer (like you had the video about How to Hire a Contractor). Thank you
I’m working on this video now Kristi, of course from my perspective it’s going to be very detailed as I don’t want to leave anything out! You either need an architect or structural engineer to stamp plans for city submission- either one can do it, so yes you need to hire one or the licensed contractor may use the one they work with. You can also contact the city and ask them for referrals, which is a great resource since they have a list of architects they love to work with.
You have no idea how you just saved my butt from future drama. This was my 2nd day of searching RUclips for the right video. I’m so glad I found you 💃🏽 I’m on day 6 of a remodel project. Building a 1 bed/1 bath with an open kitchen & lounge area. I’m quite impressed how my practical mind imagined how much room I needed between island & opposite cabinets but I knew absolutely nothing about all the other measurements. You have been exactly what I needed. My North Star. I can peacefully go to sleep tonight. I’m gonna be watching the rest of your videos. Your presentation is great 👌🏾 Keep up the great work. (My 18month old nephew calls my mom “Khuu”. It’s the 1st syllable in our language for grandma) Thank you.
What a wealth of information. I have a friend who wants to remodel her kitchen and has to go on a stricter budget due to having to replace her A/C. I will talk to her again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Wow! This was so thorough! Thank you! I totally agree about those handles--I wear kimonos a lot and the sleeves get snagged all the time, even when I'm just walking by!
Julie, THANK YOU for this in depth organized guide to designing a kitchen. I often visit model homes and wonder what was the thought behind the kitchen design and function. I will definitely use this information as my guide when designing my kitchen. Continued success and blessings!
Julie, I can already tell that I’m going to love this series. I just finished a kitchen remodel and overall, I’m very pleased. The hardest part to me was picking out a backsplash. I ended up being conservative because my granite makes a statement. Thanks so much for sharing your tips and design ideas. So helpful and timely!
I think you were wise. I've seen the mistake of a busy stone top and an equally busy backsplash. Your eyes dart back and forth with no place to rest. The worst ones have different colors besides the busy patterns.
Thank you Julie Khuu! I am in the process of purchasing a home. Although a home may tick all the boxes, when it is a blank slate I have time to really make it my own. Your new Series is the best I have ever seen! When we move in, the plan is to put the beds in the bedrooms and our clothes in the closets, but after that everything else will be a decision. Most of our furniture we are leaving behind so this information is not only timely, but well thought out and actually helpful! So for me, I hope to see every space that a home could possibly have.
I’m so looking forward to this new series!!! Julie your makeup is flawless! Any chance you can do a makeup tutorial?? Another wonderful, informative video! Thank you!
I would like to know your lipstick shade. It looks great but I don't look good in red. It makes me look harsh but yours looks good so I would try it. Name of it please or any suggestions
Wow, well done on this video. First ever kitchen (or any room) remodelling video I've seen... Just about to start my redoing my house in Ireland and this 54 year old guy has learnt a lot! I'll be rewatching for sure. Best wishes to you and your family!
Julie, your videos are all so educational, so helpful! You literally inspire with every video! I really appreciate you sharing your wealth of knowledge with those of us struggling through the process of trying to make our spaces feel like "home".
Great info...I wanted and island but realized that I needed a portable one. I opted for a french inspired one so I could put the everyday cookware and beautiful mixing bowls underneath. I use everything!!! Lol I was so desperate I was willing to put my refrigerator where my pantry was which mean on the other side of my island and no pantry. Well I came to my senses. Lol
Love that you allow us to see your mistakes and learn from them...We are planning a new home, and I have found this video to be invaluable! We be referring back to it for sure! Thank you for making this video and please keep them coming!
Julie Khuu , Yesss!, to living room design, furniture placement...Having the hardest time trying to arrange mine!! Anddd!, it’s a square...how hard can that be??!! Wellll, mine surely is as it has two large/wide, ceiling to floor openings, one off of narrow entryway, the other going into kitchen. Also, there’s the “must keep” of our fur baby’s oversized (it seats 1 1/2 people) recliner so he can see out the window, plus it’s his cozy place!! It’s one of those from “ back in the day” when hunter green was in, true story. Still in great shape, but can’t find a chair cover in different color to fit. Never have I had the toughest challenge of arranging furniture in a square room...so discouraged & frustrated :( SOS, Julie ❤️
@@happywife-e7g my grandma and aunt had a fleece or sheep blanket for their dogs' beds. The only people I know that spoiled them to that point😁 but it may change the color enough to be livable for your room
The only reason I am posting this is because the video is called COMMON DESIGN MISTAKES. That said, the kitchens in this video look like every other extremely expensive design oriented home kitchen. It has all of the kitchen design platitudes and the same inefficiencies that plague every great looking kitchen with a beautiful design. Unfortunately, like most home kitchens designed by professional designers and architects, it is designed for a photo op and not designed for the efficient processing of turning raw ingredients into finished meals. Most professionally designed home kitchens have a large capacity range, a large capacity refrigerator, an island, a lot of counter space with a Kitchenaid Mixer on it and the rest of the counter space is covered with nick-nacks. This looks great but it is inefficient and does not take full consideration into matching equipment with the output of food. The two questions that are never asked of the customer are: What do you plan to cook in this kitchen? What is the quantity of food you plan to prepare at a time? Instead the questions are: What color do you want the cabinets? Where do you want the island? What kind of material do you want for your countertops? What type of wood flooring do your want? These are not questions that will lead to a kitchen designed to make professionally prepared quality meals. Restaurants don't have wood floors, they have tile floors. When you spill water on a wooden floor (especially wood laminate) it destroys the floor. When you spill water on a tile floor it does nothing except make it wet. Why is valuable space used for a six burner range in a home kitchen? There are important reasons restaurants need a lot of burners but home kitchens do not have the same issues.. Most of the time, in a home kitchen, the extra burners just sit there and aren't used. A restaurant requires a lot of stove burners because a lot of different meals are being prepared that need to come out at the same time. That is not generally the case with a home kitchen. Home kitchens usually prepare the same meal for an entire group of people. Is a six burner range really needed when a four burner range will be more than enough burners for 99% of the meals. What is the homeowner planning to put on those burners? Was the quantity of raw ingredients to be prepared that are to be cooked on those burners considered? How are the raw ingredients going to be prepared; by taking a lot more time, by adding more helpers, by using food preparation appliances? A batch bowl food processor like a Cuisinart can prepare food for one or two burners efficiently but a continuous feed food processor like a Robot Coupe would be a more efficient choice to fill up the six burner range. If a customer is going to pay $100,000 for a kitchen renovation they should be able to afford better appliances. So far, I haven't seen this in any high end home kitchens. A lot of attention in designer home kitchens is paid to the "work triangle" but little or no attention is paid to the throughput issues involved in food preparation. It isn't that the kitchen in this video doesn't look great because it does. In fact it is a beautiful work of artistic design. The problem is that it was designed by an artist and not a cook. Commercial kitchens look the way they do because a lot of their design considerations came from the chefs who have to work in them. A tiny commercial kitchen can easily prepare 300 meals a day. An inefficient home kitchen struggles to prepare three meals a day. Two of those three meals will probably be frozen toaster waffles and hot dogs. This isn't a suggestion to make a home kitchen look like a commercial kitchen but only to suggest that a kitchen design should take meal preparation a little more seriously and incorporate the actual preparation of meals into the kitchen design. david
Wow!! This post echoes my thoughts. My designer is always going on about what colors or materials to pick but never about how to make my cooking easier. I love to cook a lot and don't care much about the hydraulic lift up system for the shutters or glossy vs super glossy laminates.
@@sudhalsv4921 Click this link < ruclips.net/video/Xb3scYQfF5w/видео.html > to see a kitchen designed to prepare professional chef quality meals and still resemble a French Country Home Kitchen. The kitchen was designed to prepare meals one would expect to find in a fine restaurant. The commercial equipment eliminates the time consuming laborious preparation of raw ingredients.

Guys, speaking of designer mistakes: never choose black tile floors! Only if you’re a fan of constant cleaning, sweeping and moping. Previous owners made this mistake and I am the one who live with it every day😂
I've got mirror polish black tiles and it really isn't a problem. i bought one of those dry mop things and have a handheld wand style vacuum for quick spills and daily dirt. Also, it helps that the kitchen /diner is only 4 x 3 metres.
same with white floors. I inherited white tile floor in bathroom and my brown hair sheds. Like crazy and the floor always looks messy. I could sweep four times a day.
This is the best kitchen renovation video I have ever seen! I have been looking I am looking for one good one. This one is so informative! Thank you so very much, Julie!
excellent.i am remodeling my kitchen and i got more information in this half hour video than in hours of looking at pictures and reading articles . thank you very much. every part of this talk was useful
Oh. And I made a similar mistake with my current kitchen handles. Beautiful but they catch on everything. Thx for reminding me to pick something different in the next project 😊
Awesome video! I'm going through a kitchen remodel now so this is so timely and helpful. Could you please do a video on how to style open concept living / dining / kitchen areas to make them look cohesive? I have seen homes where each room looks great on it's own but not together as a continuous space.
Thank you so much for this, I’m waiting for our kitchen designer to send me the 1st draft plans for my new kitchen. I will certainly use your advise to ensure we don’t make costly mistakes x
Hi Julie! Thx for the tips! I have 18"x 90"" backsplash and an thinking of using a horizontally placed 24x48 porcelain tile for a backsplash. I'd love to get ure thoughts on this. Tile is much cheaper approx $8 per square foot than going full height on quartz tops $75 per sq foot. Thoughts?
I have learned that hiring a designer is the best money spent. It adds 10% to the cost, but easily saves you 30% or more in mistakes, so you come out way ahead and with a better end result.
Yes 🙌🏻 My thoughts exactly. Because you have to remember that a contractor is not the same thing as a designer and most people only budget for construction.
@@KC-rz3tq the rates vary widely. Around here they are many in number, and many (most?) people use them. I would want to know their construction management experience, which frankly is far more important than the stuff we see on to (picking out fabrics and paint colours, the right marble and other finishes). A friend of mine is one of Toronto’s BIG $$$ designers (she does mansions, big normal people houses) and she’s told me that she will work a project for months and pick out all of those finishes in one day near the end. The majority of the project is designing the traffic flow, laying out the kitchen and other rooms, watching how things like windows are installed (do they line up with whatever they are supposed to line up with), etc. The finishes and other “HGTV" stuff is easy Peary.
Yes!! Julie is the best!! My budget didn’t allow my to hire a designer. Julia will work with you depending on your budget so she can give you her advice.
OMG!!!!! This video was so AWESOME Julie!!!! I am definitely going to save this series as I plan out my fixer upper dream home! WOW!!!! I can't wait for the entire series! I don't think you mentioned "Laundry Room". I think that Laundry Rooms are one of the most forgotten rooms in the home. PLEASE include that room as well! ❤️❤️❤️👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
This is a huge help! I have a galley kitchen that needs a facelift (the remodel and enlargement is in the future) and knowing the spatial requirements is my 1st step for planning. Thank you!
Hey Julie, your lessons are awesome -full of information and easy to understand! Please keep-up the good work. I would like to request you to do a series on home staging please. Would love to know how fast-paced home dressing works, and what all it involves. Also, if you can suggest some good courses on home staging, please. Thanks 😊👏
Thank you, I’m actually beginning a huge kitchen remodel right now. Wish you had this out before I spent so many hours planning and researching 😬. Your tips are great!
Just loved this video. Julie is amazing. I'm about to start a kitchen remodel in 2 months and so glad that i found her!!! Learned a lot in less than 30 mins. although i'll have to rewatch some of it again. Thank you Julie!
Hi Julie, you are so generous in sharing your knowledge. I’m learning a lot. I’m inspired and done home fluffing recently. Thank you and wishing you the best.
This was a very informative video. Our builder positioned the kitchen window to face the neighbors house instead of our backyard😭 i hate looking at their house while doing dishes. Also no space for the trash can. The simplest things can really throw off your design
It’s true, sometimes you don’t realize there’s something better until you don’t have it. You can also add the trash bin underneath the sink Bridgette- or repurpose another cabinet and remove the shelves to DIY a pull out trash. They sell the components separately on Amazon (and hardware stores)
Hi Julie! I am SO GLAD I found d your channel. I just bought my first home & it is almost empty. That may sound amazing, but not for someone who’s not great with designing. I’ve been binge-watching all your design videos to get ideas & they’ve been super helpful! But I would love to see you do one about how to design for open concept home-both large & small. Especially when the living room is open to the kitchen. I would really appreciate seeing how to properly furnish & decorate the space.
@@JulieKhuu Omg thanks for responding! And I can’t wait to see it! I am truly at a loss about how to plan my space. My house is a new build, but very much at the lower end in terms of finishes. My home is just over 1600 square feet, with an open living, dining & kitchen area. PLEASE HELP!!!
I’m just about to get my small U shape kitchen done after planning it for 2 years now. Lucky I had one thing in mind and that is practicality the hardest thing to pick was Backslash . Thank you so much for your video
We are designing our new build right now and working with a designer, architect and builder hand-in-hand to get the best overall ideas for our build. This helps me walk into our next meeting full of information I want to discuss. Thank you! I appreciate all the detail even down to the hardware!
I'm excited to see the designer challenges series! I know art hanging will be one of them!! 😁 I need help with room/furniture scale and how much is too much decor? 😄 Thank you gorgeous!!
I agree! The struggle of needing to vent out the smells of fish sauce, oyster sauce and spicy peppers after cooking in an Asian household. I am moving into a new home soon (feeling blessed and excited!) and this will be the first time in my life with an open concept kitchen. Can't wait to rule that space of the house hehe. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge, I watch and rewatch your videos.
Regarding glass mosaic as a backsplash, I wondered if I could mix it up by adding a solid piece of clear glass directly behind the slide in range, with the mosaics butting into it against each side . I love the look of the mosaic, but not interested in having to clean chili out of the tiny grout lines on mosaic tiles!
@@JulieKhuu Thanks, Julie! I appreciat your feedback. But if the glass is a bit thicker, it will be just slightly 'proud' of the mosiaic, along each side, for the 18" height of the mosaic under the wall cabinets on either side of the range. If the glass is finished on each edge, so it is smooth, wouldn't it act almost like a bullnose , and I could use some clear silicone caulk between the sections? The glass area would be 30" wide and 24" high, going up to the bottom of the Microwave Hood. I'm still researching the type of glass needed, but was just wondering if that was a thing I could do, design-wise.
That’s a good one 🙌🏻 There are ways to integrate the side backsplash into a design, I’ll add it to a future how to video. Thank you for watching Kristine!
Omg! Yes! I found it super odd when the designer told me about it extending. I think it looks weird too, just my opinion 🙃. Thank god we opted to not get a backsplash but will do it ourselves.
Julie, this video is extraordinarily helpful and comprehensive, I so appreciate all the valuable information. I wonder if you have a video that addresses compost station in the kitchen? How best to handle food scraps near the sink and fridge? We use a lidded pottery bowl adjacent to the sink, which we then empty into a freestanding 5 gallon compost bin which is picked up once a week. Home composting is now the law in VT and of course food waste is a major issue. How to do it neatly? I love your suggestion of the drawers for trash and recycling; would you just add a third one for compost?
JULIE! You're changing my life, one video at a time! I'll be remodeling our retirement home in a year, and already you've taught me so much and changed my thinking on some key things. Now: will I have time to watch (and incorporate) all your content in a single year? Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm totally with you on pretty much everything, just didn't know how to articulate it, even to myself!
I just found you today and you are fabulous. I love your idea and recommendations. I also love that you are real enough to admit mistakes you’ve made, it really helps me. The only thing i wished for was that you show kitchens and what you would change about them. I will be remodeling my kitchen in the next couple of years, but dont have a lot of money to do it…still saving. Thanks for your help.
I thought this video was wonderful, such thoughtful points. I designed a new kitchen a few years ago and didn’t do many mistakes, luckily. Now I’m about to move and design a new kitchen in that home. I listened very closely as this one is a lot smaller so need every square inch.
I designed a new kitchen about 15 years ago. I did a lot of research and didn't make any of the mistakes mentioned in this video. The kitchen has been a dream to work in. I am about to paint the bottom doors a modern colour to update it and will have to replace the work surfaces as well. I will however be hard pressed to replace it, unless I do the new kitchen in exactly the same way. Research is vital. One other thing is to place your sink in front of a window. If you don't have a dishwasher, it makes washing dishes a lot more pleasant. Off to go and watch your video on countertops :)
Very informative video. After seeing all those fancy kitchens, it just confirms I prefer simple and not so intricate. Too much to clean and take care of. Some of those kitchens are just too much to look at. Complicated ceiling designs, flooring, and cabinet trim. Thanks for showing the variety. Some I did like.
I have just discovered you and I must say I LOVE how you disseminate information! Constantly showing pics and ideas instead of just having the camera on you the whole makes the video so much more interesting. New sub!
The best kitchen design video 👍 I can’t wait for your next video. We just finished our cabinet installation. The cabinet contractor mistakenly made the the finished cabinet from the back of the cabinet to the front of the drawer 24 inches (it includes the face frame, it should be added 3/4” more). It caused the stand oven couldn’t be installed so we ended up move the cabinet 1” away from the wall. Our countertops will be installed in two weeks.
Simply the best! Thank you. I would love your ideas on outlet placement in your kitchen with the tall backsplashes, please. I’m planning my renovation and am torn on outlet placement and cord management. Thanks for any advice! Happy 2022 and many blessings.
Thanks for watching Denise! Give it at least 6” negative space above a tall backsplash. I made the mistake of placing a plug too close to mine and I can rarely use the bottom socket with bulky plugs.
I think you rock, I always agree with you! Your advice is always spot on. When I help someone else I get goose bumps literally when I see it’s right! That never happens to me when I design for myself. We just sold our big house to downsize . Which hurts a little anyway, going up is soooo much easier. I’ve always wanted a black kitchen, I now have the chance and I find myself doubting, everyone is against me. We have bright windows and plan to use white slightly veined countertops. White marble tiled black splash because I can’t afford solid. If I new it was our forever home, maybe, but if I were to pour in money in our current economy we could lose, always gone safe for resale. I would like to just go for it, l’m no spring chicken and am doing a great deal of it. Painting house in side, cabinets, designing, tilling, cleaning and making supper 🥴🤪l just can’t afford to make a mistake! I just keep watching. Thanks so much for your sound advice. Our home with a couple of black wall sold on 8 days, I was told it would take 30 to 40. I was told it showed like a show home, I know my instincts are pretty good but I’m feeling deflated, grr. Thanks again
Excellent video. Our new house desperately needs a new kitchen and I shall watch this again before finalizing the new design. The current kitchen is large, but it is so badly laid out a kitchen less than half the size could be more functional. The most glaring error is the 45' working triangle with a 20' walk (hike) to the fridge. You actually need to increase the size of meals to offset the calories burning going back and forth while preparing a meal.
Hi Julie. I love your personal style. It seems like it has a Japanese inspiration, but I don't know the name for it. I really love the Asian feel if that is its inspiration. It is just beautiful. You have a very clear way of explaining your content. It is fun to watch and educational. Thanks for offering this content. Regards, Christi
You are, as always, brilliant and timely, Julie. I'm working on a 7' wide x 14.5' kitchen. The stove is on the inner side wall, allowing only 30" or less between that and the sink and counters. As I saw in another of your videos, moving the stove to the END of the room is a good solution. It's an 1850s house, so I want to honour that history and get a workable kitchen too. "Historical Industrial" 🤔😍 i.e. possibly using an IKEA kitchen cart, using IKEA OMAR units near the stove and a mysterious exhaust pipe in the corner). Many thanks.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am at the planning process of my dream kitchen remodel. I am designing it myself and this video could not have come at a better time.
Thank you for watching and stopping by with feedback Audrey! 🙏🏻☺️
Hi Audrey, do you mind to share which school provide the interior design part time course ? Thanks !
You are so right with your comments about hiring a designer! They are worth their weight in gold for a major kitchen remodel. Ours designed a dog feeding station, a cabinet for table leaves, a cubbie for a collapsible stool and a specific height for the microwave. Love this series!
Genius moves that make the kitchen so functional and creative Donna 🙌🏻
"Contractors are not designers." That is so true! Don't make the mistake I made and ask their opinion on cabinet color! Ugh!
If you ask, you will always get an answer. Proceed with caution 😆
@@CG-qb2ii They also want to go with cheap too.
We hired a designer who is also a general contractor, so I guess there are exceptions. And she a woman & it’s a family-owned, all-female firm.

You were thoughtful with the design and intentional with your execution Michelle 🙌🏻
As a kitchen designer and cabinetmaker, I can only agree with the concepts outlined here. Also, I'm impressed with the photos of the kitchens shown. Great video.
Thank you for watching and the support Tom! I appreciate it coming from an industry veteran 👍🏻
Laundry room design. I mean a real working laundry room that is utilitarian and also has to store vacuum cleaner, mops, broom, and paper goods ( t.p., napkins, paper towels, etc).
It’s coming up next week Lola! 🙌🏻☺️
Tell me about it. I have the worst designed laundry room in the world designed by a man Stephen Fuller- The Valleydale. It doesn't even have a sink so my husband brings all sorts of gross things to my kitchen sink to be cleaned.
Oh that is my dream to have a large laundry room with quartz countertops and slide outs for drying sweaters, a sewing machine, ironing, etc.
Greatest RUclips video I’ve seen for renovating a Kitchen.

You’ve got the determination to do it right 🙌🏻 Love your vision ✨
I was just like you. Since I was like 15 I was dreaming of that little place of mine. Ten years later and I’ll be moving to my perfect place soon. Not house yet but quite spacious flat which I designed from a scratch. It gives so much satisfaction and gives such a confidence boost that you’ve collected knowledge about topic not connected to your field (im biotechnologist yet i love interior designing) and created it yourself. Keep dreaming 🥰
@@oliwiam7255 am happy that u r able to live your dream. I too wish I could someday make my dream a reality
I cant get enough of your videos. I am learning more from you than I have from anyone else.

That’s awesome Vikas! So glad I can help, thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Loved her video. Not critical of other people's tastes, but instead, she points out mistakes on design, measurements, structure, functionality and things of the sort, instead of just saying "this is out of style dont do it or use it". Very mature and professional show. I liked it!!
Thank you for watching and the honest feedback Annuit, I appreciate you stopping by 🙏🏻☺️
Thanks Julie for helping me avoid serious potential mistakes while designing my new kitchen. Much appreciated.
Yes! Those long handles are troublesome as well! Thank you for watching and the feedback GB 👍🏻☺️

Since the kitchen is the room you go through usually first I need space to drop keys, mail etc without looking cluttered. Also I keep many handy tools in my "tool drawer" and I've created a medicine cabinet to store vitamin bottles and the like out of sight.
You’ve got your system down John, love it 🙌🏻
Loved that you gave real measurements for spaces.
I’m so glad I found you 💃🏽
I’m on day 6 of a remodel project. Building a 1 bed/1 bath with an open kitchen & lounge area.
Then you made the right move Teri! You don’t want the backsplash competing with the star of the show 🙌🏻
I think you were wise.
This isn't a suggestion to make a home kitchen look like a commercial kitchen but only to suggest that a kitchen design should take meal preparation a little more seriously and incorporate the actual preparation of meals into the kitchen design.
david
Wow!!! Such an interesting take. Very true!
Valid. It is aspirational fashion. Conway quote : kitchens need water, a heat source, a board, a knife and a pot.

Problem is how do you even start looking for a designer? I don’t know anyone who hired a designer .. small circle :). What is the rate like?

I don't think you mentioned "Laundry Room". I think that Laundry Rooms are one of the most forgotten rooms in the home. PLEASE include that room as well! ❤️❤️❤️👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Laundry room now added Tiarra! Thanks to you, I’m including this often utilized, most underestimated room in the home 🙌🏻
This is a huge help! I have a galley kitchen that needs a facelift (the remodel and enlargement is in the future) and knowing the spatial requirements is my 1st step for planning. Thank you!
And choosing the right appliances for the space 🙌🏻 Good luck Pat!
Hello how are you doing today, I hope you are having a nice time?
Oh yes!! Well this is RUclips gold - so well put together, crystal clear and Julie you are very cool. Addicted already
Thank you for watching Katcha 🙏🏻☺️
Hey Julie, your lessons are awesome -full of information and easy to understand! Please keep-up the good work. I would like to request you to do a series on home staging please. Would love to know how fast-paced home dressing works, and what all it involves. Also, if you can suggest some good courses on home staging, please. Thanks 😊👏
Thank you for watching and the video suggestion! I’ll work it out 🙌🏻☺️
Thank you, I’m actually beginning a huge kitchen remodel right now. Wish you had this out before I spent so many hours planning and researching 😬.
Your tips are great!
Hope you’ll keep the tips in mind when it’s being built! Never too late to add key functionality Laura 👍🏻☺️
Thanks Julie, very informative and helpful. 💖
Thank you for watching Lorraine! 🙏🏻☺️
Just loved this video. Julie is amazing. I'm about to start a kitchen remodel in 2 months and so glad that i found her!!! Learned a lot in less than 30 mins. although i'll have to rewatch some of it again. Thank you Julie!
Thank you for watching Stephanie! Hope this helps your design plan 👍🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu thank you! Loved the “countertop” video too!
Hi Julie, you are so generous in sharing your knowledge. I’m learning a lot. I’m inspired and done home fluffing recently. Thank you and wishing you the best.
Thank you for watching and the support Noreen! Can’t wait to hear all about it! 🙏🏻☺️
It would be great see ideas on designing a practical pantry for large families
Will be adding pantries and utility areas to the series 👍🏻
Agree!
Yup, that open concept video is in queue Christina! It’s a hot topic! 👍🏻
Congratulations for buying your first home.
I’m just about to get my small U shape kitchen done after planning it for 2 years now.
Lucky I had one thing in mind and that is practicality the hardest thing to pick was Backslash .
Thank you so much for your video
I have another video on timeless backsplash and countertop combinations Lisa! Check it out for more tips 👍🏻☺️
We are designing our new build right now and working with a designer, architect and builder hand-in-hand to get the best overall ideas for our build. This helps me walk into our next meeting full of information I want to discuss. Thank you! I appreciate all the detail even down to the hardware!
Yes, the perfect trifecta 🙌🏻
I am no 2 to comment today..... God bless this Chanel, I have learnt alot and God bless every subscriber
Thank you for watching and your support Tatari! 🙏🏻☺️
God bless you too Tatari
I'm excited to see the designer challenges series! I know art hanging will be one of them!! 😁 I need help with room/furniture scale and how much is too much decor? 😄 Thank you gorgeous!!
Hanging art is coming up in Living room mistakes. I have a video out now in my Dream Space series about scale and proportion- check it out ☺️
@Silly Hello how are you doing?
The best I’ve watched so far! Really good “normal” need info!
Thank you for watching Keith! ☺️🙏🏻
Then you know what I mean! 😅 Thank you for watching Saleena! Congratulations on the new home 🎉
That’s a smart idea, but make sure the thicknesses are the same Susan. You want the different materials to match up perfectly 👍🏻
Hello how are you doing today, I hope you are having a nice time?
Another kitchen design mistake that I see very often: extending the backsplash to the side walls. Most of the time, it looks odd.
That’s a good one 🙌🏻 There are ways to integrate the side backsplash into a design, I’ll add it to a future how to video. Thank you for watching Kristine!
Omg I did this haha someone help me 😂
Omg! Yes! I found it super odd when the designer told me about it extending. I think it looks weird too, just my opinion 🙃. Thank god we opted to not get a backsplash but will do it ourselves.
Make a video on living room, dining room combining the space. Please
Yup, they’re both coming up next Ligia! Stay tuned 🙏🏻☺️
I love this idea, but would need to do more research for the best composting methods! Next video 👍☺️
That’s awesome Jenn, I’m so glad I can help you fine- tune your design direction 🙌🏻
I love this idea for future videos Anne! Thank you for watching and the feedback 👍🏻☺️
I thought this video was wonderful, such thoughtful points. I designed a new kitchen a few years ago and didn’t do many mistakes, luckily. Now I’m about to move and design a new kitchen in that home. I listened very closely as this one is a lot smaller so need every square inch.
You’re a pro by now Beverly! 🙌🏻 thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you for watching and providing your insight Hanle 🙏🏻☺️
Very informative video. After seeing all those fancy kitchens, it just confirms I prefer simple and not so intricate. Too much to clean and take care of. Some of those kitchens are just too much to look at. Complicated ceiling designs, flooring, and cabinet trim. Thanks for showing the variety. Some I did like.
I can take away something from every space I see, no matter what the style may be. That’s the beauty of great design, inspiration 😊
The absolute best RUclips video on design mistakes. Really well done, crisp delivery and great information. Thank you so very much!
Thank you for watching Janet! 🙏🏻☺️
I have just discovered you and I must say I LOVE how you disseminate information! Constantly showing pics and ideas instead of just having the camera on you the whole makes the video so much more interesting. New sub!
Thank you for watching and the support Sherakay! Hope you’ll check out more and let me know your thoughts 🙏🏻☺️
Oh yikes! Glad you caught it before the other cabinets were made! 😆
I find you were so detail and organized , I d get you to do my crazy 1980 dark oak kitchen.
Thank you for watching Jocelyne! 🙏🏻☺️
@Jocelyne Pambrun Hello hope you had a great holiday and what are your plans for this weekend?
Hello how are you doing today, I hope you are having a nice time?
Excellent video. Our new house desperately needs a new kitchen and I shall watch this again before finalizing the new design. The current kitchen is large, but it is so badly laid out a kitchen less than half the size could be more functional. The most glaring error is the 45' working triangle with a 20' walk (hike) to the fridge. You actually need to increase the size of meals to offset the calories burning going back and forth while preparing a meal.
Haha great for the diet, not so great for the chef! 😅
Excellent video. Thanks for helping me NOT make a bunch of mistakes...phew! Appreciate your thorough and well done presentation.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Hello how are you doing today, I hope you are having a nice time?
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am at the planning process of my dream kitchen remodel. I am designing it myself and this video could not have come at a better time.
How exciting John! Good luck to you, thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
This was without compare the MOST informative design mistakes video I’ve ever seen.
Truly insightful video! Thank you!
Thank you for watching Trokonzah! There’s an entire common design mistakes series where this came from! Check out the playlist 👍🏻☺️
