@@nmbnmbnmb I apologize for having an opinion....real homes don’t mean boring and unstylish, it’s just how most of us live. Seeing her incorporate her ideas into not only high end homes but regular homes as well would help average homeowners envision their space more easily.
@@JulieKhuu I understand both viewpoints. But, I would also like to point out that you can have luxury décor (lux is how I roll too), but on a smaller scale, so that makes the lux look more attainable. Like I live in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City and I have expensive, traditional taste, so a lot of my décor is fit for a castle or a manor house, but I live in a normal sized apartment- no huge rooms like a castle or manor, but the décor is fit for one! :-D And, PS- nothing is very expensive, it just looks expensive. Great video. I have decorated my living room / dining room over the summer and although it is a huge improvement, I was only about 90% happy with it, you have now given me an idea to fix it! Focus wall here we come......
Ah, my partner is not content with the focus wall idea! My idea is for the bay window wall to be painted a darker shade, as I don’t think there is enough contrast between my curtains and the shade of the wall.

I love all your videos💕 Please make a video with tips about decor for a cut out wall and other “strange” layouts people may encounter (like curved walls or little nooks) thank you 😊
Start by purchasing the TV size you like then source a console or furniture piece below to anchor the wall Leanna. Look for something larger than the width of the TV. Love this idea, will make a video to show you more inspiration!
This is such great advice. I would add in terms of artwork, a 'focal' gallery wall of original artwork in varying styles, frames and sizes gives a great 'homely' feel. With furniture, I always believe it needs to be curated and updated over time. Not one piece in my lounge matches. I moved into the house with a second hand 1990s habitat sofa with an intention of moving up to a bespoke Heal's & Co velvet 3 seater. Don't spend money on a stop gap piece but keep your intention on the piece you do want. Also, buy furniture/art/accessories with passion. If you love it when you first saw it, chances are you will love it for 10, 20 Infinate years. lastly, play with scale and height. The can often inform the layout.
Fantastic tips Martin! When we first start our decorating journey, it’s easy to pick pieces that simply function for our immediate needs. But once you give it a little more thought, and purchase with intent and passion, those pieces will have major longevity to support your overall aesthetic. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
You helped me see why I am having problems with my living room. If your home was built in a different century the focus was different!! Dimensions and room design.
Hi Julie! Absolutely love this series! It would be great if you could show us how to incorporate pets items (particularly cat trees) into your space. This video popped up in my recommendations so I clicked to watch it I like how you started by saying just do whatever you want as long as it's intentional I'd say I'm reasonably informed about design and have a good eye for it but at the same time I just love a good cluttered wall full of art All my furniture and decor comes from flea markets, street fairs, thrift stores, online market places or they're hand-me-downs or even stuff I found for free at the recycling center or bought while traveling For me it's all very special and I'm proud of my beautiful "zero budget" home full of personality
Same here Jonna! If you get a chance, check out my Thrift Flip video, I’m all about scouring treasured pieces second hand! I love being able to put my stamp on it. Plus they don’t make furniture like they used to. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️

I love your very educational tips on the art of interior design. It's past time for me to start again and have watched each video several times, stopping at different points to examine and think about the design aspect of what is shown. Your experience is very much appreciated because hotels have to be practical in living spaces. I've struggled with what to do about a long narrow hallway and so many other situations which have been demystified with your instruction. Yes, symmetry is the solution for why things look off. Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge and encouragement.

Great video! I'll never give up my silk arrangements that I make myself. They are art to me. Some give color, some are sculptural, some are just twiggs in a tall vase. When they get dirty or funky you can clean them or just change them with new.
@@JulieKhuu I love to make arrangements too lol...I took them all away once and the rooms looked so unfinished and boring. I have something green in every room and some flowers here and there. I love decor and your vids are very helpful and to the point so thanks :)
I love your tips for designing, but I don't live in a plush fancy home. I would like to intergrate your ideas, but its hard to envision them in my normal middle class home. Thanks :)
I’m inspired by luxury and fully designed spaces Cynthia. I take bits and pieces to help inspire my average middle class home ☺️ It keeps me dreaming of the possibilities! ✨
I looked everywhere on eBay for two matching pieces of furniture to complement my dining suite, I finally found a matching timber buffet and cocktail cabinet with the perfect dimensions (40cm depth) to fit in the spaces and had them trucked from another state. All my furniture is eclectic and I collect antique bronzes among other interesting antiques. The space looks amazing!
Really like your series although I don’t always agree with what are mistakes. I think people love different looks which aren’t always minimalist. They are not wrong...just different. 😊
What I love the most that you said and will help me in future purchases of living room or bedroom or any other furniture is don't purchase based on the past or the future purchase for now.
All of this sounds great. I just have to figure out where to go shopping. My local places are just boring. And I don't like to purchase furniture online. I like to see the items in person. I am going to just hire a designer. This is overwhelming.
Shop in person for the tactile pieces you need to see, feel, sit on, etc but go online for the finishing touches. You will have SO much more options to personalize your space. Check out my source and shop online furniture for my fav online resources Anthony!
Great tips. You demonstrate your experience. I love the design mistake series.....we all hate realizing our mistakes after living in a room that is just not "right". Cant wait for the dining room mistakes video.
Thank you for the feedback 👍🏻 Will provide more of a mix in future videos, but I’m inspired by the “dream” more than I’m inspired by “normal” looking homes. It allows me to get creative with what I have to work with ☺️
@@JulieKhuu, unfortunately, the “dream” isn’t the reality. We need reality. What I see in the video are living rooms that look like they belong in celebrities’ homes or those of designers I have seen in magazines. Clearly, you feel we wouldn’t be as interested in your designs if you redid my next door neighbor’s living room! I mean, they make attractive pictures, but if the “average Joe” can’t implement the ideas because of design constraints, that’s all they are-just attractive pictures we can’t really emulate.
I would LOVE to see a video on decorating/furnishing a log cabin. I have natural-light wood throughout and I’m going for a “cozy cabin in the woods” feel, (like a vacation house in Tennessee) with themes in each room.
Let me work on this one Bridget! In the meantime, check out my video on finding your style for more tips! I feel like regardless of the cabin vibe, you can still inject moments from a mix of styles into each room. Allow your color palette to help dictate the direction 👍🏻☺️

I have a rental friendly budget apartment video in my playlist now Kab 👍🏻 The goal of my channel is to offer you inspiration and aspire for the life you desire, most of these dream spaces will do just that ✨
@@JulieKhuu Except that it gives quite unrealistic inspiration/expectations for our own spaces. It doesn't matter how inspired and intentionally I can design my condo living room, it will never look like those spaces. I can make it beautiful and functional and gorgeous by designing it well, but I also need to have realistic expectations because architecture is at least half of what makes those photos beautiful. if I'm not realistic with myself, it doesn't matter how good of a job I do, i'll be unhappy.
@@rochellesmith8837 I think what Julie is trying to show us, as it was already stated, are certain aspects of the images she uses for her videos. I get what you want to say, nonetheless it is an inspiration. You don't have to pay thousands of dollars on a dining table to achieve a nice and professional look. I for myself like to flip through magazines and Pinterest, find images I like and think about how I can achieve what I like about those designs in the budget range and the space available.
Is it possible to do away with rugs ?like if you are allergic,or have too hot a climate or live somewhere with higher atmospheric dust?can you skip rugs ?
Yes, absolutely 👍🏻 Pets/kids/dust/allergies, lots of reasons why many don’t decorate with rugs. You can create patterns and defined spaces with flooring transitions like a mix of tile. I have clients who prefer outdoor rugs indoors made of synthetic materials so it’s easier to hose down. Do what works for you Kanwal!
Julie I love the way you are real and honest about the common mistakes made in decorating a space. I've learned so much from you watching this video. Interior design is one of my passions and you have clarified some of the do's and don'ts. Thank you!
Julie, how do you find the middle ground between a piece that you love with what is functional? Like you love that RH cloud couch but you have kids. Can there be a middle ground?
Yes, performance fabrics! Select a fabric that is easy to clean, could have removable cushions to throw in the wash, or one that is optimized with synthetic fibers so you can simply spray and wipe it down. The only reason I don’t have the cloud sofa already has to do with spatial challenges- the scale is totally off for my living room
@@JulieKhuu I wanted the cloud sofa for comfort, but IRL I was afraid it would look too rumpled and I didn’t want to deal with constantly fluffing it up, plus I vowed to myself not to eat or use animal products such as leather and down any longer. Many considerations to purchasing a sofa!
You make a valid point, but isn’t the primary function of an American living room, especially for couples or singles, watching TV? Most Americans aren’t humming around the house, waiting on someone to enjoy the living room we can’t because we establish it for the purpose of its primary function, which is television. It’d be nice to hear a designer treat the living room how it’s actually treated - as a hub for entertainment. I can’t remember the last time I voluntarily hung out with people in a room that has no entertainment. It’s non-sensical to the average person. Your points are great, but aboveboard for typical people.
It’s split 50/50. I have clients who wouldn’t dream of putting a TV in the living area. They keep it in the bedroom/ private areas so the living room is used as a gathering space devoid of technology. It’s becoming increasingly popular, especially if you have a family room or loft as a dedicated entertainment hub. But I get you, if you only have one room and you need a TV, the living room would be the place to put it (see my own home for example)
You assume we are all TV addicts. They are the biggest eyesore in a 'living' room where we 'socialize', not mutely sit together. TVs work in their own media area, or somewhere where you isolate, like your bedroom.
Totally confused about what 'style' I like, what to place where, what to buy and just started redoing my entire home. This was so helpful- great content, Julie. Thank you!
I think she gets really rich clients because anyone I know wants a spacious living room. It's where you have people over and usually spend the most time. But I can imagine that if you have a huge apartment or house you would want to make is cosier.
I have clients with small studio living rooms and the goal is to always make better use of space. Not necessarily lose the functional aspects of sofas and seating simply to make it more spacious.
Thank you for your videos on Mistakes Made in Remodeling Kitchens. I learned where to start. Measure the space first. I found your video when I was day dreaming on Living Spaces.

Love all the information you provide. So helpful in choosing the right products.
Thank you for watching Cheryl 🙏🏻☺️
Julie, could you please address how to design a television wall in a great room?
Start by purchasing the TV size you like then source a console or furniture piece below to anchor the wall Leanna. Look for something larger than the width of the TV. Love this idea, will make a video to show you more inspiration!
Julie Khuu great suggestion for a television wall, thank you!
Put a frame around it
Julie you are killing this design mistakes series!
Thank you for watching James! 🙏🏻☺️
Totally! Furniture was made to scale for specific times as well to add to the confusion 🤦🏻♀️
Hi Julie! Absolutely love this series! It would be great if you could show us how to incorporate pets items (particularly cat trees) into your space. We have 2 cat trees in our living room and they are an eye sore. We of could want our fur babies to be comfortable but I want our living room to look stylish too! Thanks so much!
Ooh this one’s gonna be a challenge, but I’m game! Will add this to my list Danni! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️

Check out the REALLY cool house Peter specifically designed for rescue cats in California - not only do the cats have fun but it's human friendly too ! (stunning design/colours/use of plants/water features) to create a zen like space.
We are remodeling our home and your videos are allowing us to make design choices to get that “upscale” look. Thank you!! I’m addicted to your videos!!
Awesome, that makes me so happy! Thank you for watching Laura 🙏🏻☺️
I’m obsessed with your videos, great tips in this one 👌🏻 but can you please do one about an open concept (living, dinning, cooking area) 🙏🏻🙏🏻 ❤️🇩🇪

@@JulieKhuu Can’t wait for it 🤩thank you so much
This video popped up in my recommendations so I clicked to watch it
I like how you started by saying just do whatever you want as long as it's intentional
I'd say I'm reasonably informed about design and have a good eye for it but at the same time I just love a good cluttered wall full of art
All my furniture and decor comes from flea markets, street fairs, thrift stores, online market places or they're hand-me-downs or even stuff I found for free at the recycling center or bought while traveling
For me it's all very special and I'm proud of my beautiful "zero budget" home full of personality
Same here Jonna! If you get a chance, check out my Thrift Flip video, I’m all about scouring treasured pieces second hand! I love being able to put my stamp on it. Plus they don’t make furniture like they used to. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu I'm one step ahead of you as I've already watched it
Thank you so much Julie! You're really professional, knowledgeable and extremely sincere in sharing with us your knowledge! I totally love your ideas and recommendations!

@@JulieKhuu yes it is exactly! My living room has became more spacious and all the beauty of the showcase and shelves can be admired now plus the view! Many many thanks! You're a pure talent!
Love all these tips, I’ve used the same ideas to style my home, and avoiding “accent walls”
The using of samples is spot on, I paint whole poster boards to decide on a color and instantly was able to choose after 6mos of searching.
Yes to the only having furniture you love and quality pieces, nothing cheapens up
Your home more than cheap particle board furniture
I’ve done that cheap particle board in my heyday! No more waste, no more junk when you know better LED 🙌🏻 Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Julie, thanks for the series. It always helps to review designing concepts and you explain them so well. Any plans to review how to fix mistakes in the guest room? BTW, I watched the video of baby girl's one year birthday and, I must tell you, what a darling little munchkin. She's got that spark and one can see she'll be a fun, interesting kid and a handful-lol. So happy for you and your husband.

Julie, can you do a video about home with small kids. Apartments with kids, how to share spaces if there isn't enough space. Does a person need such living room, if he doesn't invite people and it's just a family of 3.

Thanks for the great videos Julie! I am currently moving into a new apartment soon and it has an open living/dining room space. I would like some tips on how to design a small apartment so that we can still have both a living and dining room area as we feel that we would want to incorporate both into our space. Thanks❤
I have a video on maximizing small open concept homes coming up soon Natanya! Stay tuned 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you for watching and the wonderful feedback Rosemary! It makes me feel like I’m doing work that truly resonates 🙏🏻☺️

May i ask
I just bought a home and they have the train park in back yard and the winter they have to turn on engine all day and night and very loud . We didn't know what to do , please give me some advice, thank you very very much
I like that you offer guidelines rather than rules. Who wants their personal space dictated by rules? Guidelines make sense. Nice video.
We learn the rules, so we know how to break them with intent 🙌🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu, absolutely! That's when it becomes true personal style!

Your video is wonderful! Love it when you deliver many pointers in which I should look out for in renovating my new house. I especially love the way you said to display things which are of sentimental value to make the living room cosy. Thanks a lot! Great video, I am guilty of some of them 😳😬😬🤫
I’ve been guilty of many of them! 🙋🏼♀️ But now we know ☺️
Great video! I'll never give up my silk arrangements that I make myself. They are art to me. Some give color, some are sculptural, some are just twiggs in a tall vase. When they get dirty or funky you can clean them or just change them with new.
If you love it, you give it meaning Toni 🙌🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu Ok 👍
Thank you so much for the good content. I would like to see more examples on different ways to put furniture together in different kinds of space
Really like your series although I don’t always agree with what are mistakes. I think people love different looks which aren’t always minimalist. They are not wrong...just different. 😊
I am not a minimalist by any means Mirella! Yup, do what you love and works for your lifestyle and space 👍🏻☺️
What I love the most that you said and will help me in future purchases of living room or bedroom or any other furniture is don't purchase based on the past or the future purchase for now.
Exactly. Too often we plan around things we have, but don’t even like. Why waste more money living in the past, right? 👍🏻😊
I’ve made so many mistakes (and hope to continue to make them) so I can finally get it right and share tips with you all Louise! 🙌🏻😉
Wish you'd used more normal looking homes as illustration...
Yes, I do not see any love seat or arched windows in an average home
Thank you for the feedback 👍🏻 Will provide more of a mix in future videos, but I’m inspired by the “dream” more than I’m inspired by “normal” looking homes. It allows me to get creative with what I have to work with ☺️
I love your style, Julie!❤️ Please don’t do boring😭
@@JulieKhuu, unfortunately, the “dream” isn’t the reality. We need reality. What I see in the video are living rooms that look like they belong in celebrities’ homes or those of designers I have seen in magazines. Clearly, you feel we wouldn’t be as interested in your designs if you redid my next door neighbor’s living room! I mean, they make attractive pictures, but if the “average Joe” can’t implement the ideas because of design constraints, that’s all they are-just attractive pictures we can’t really emulate.
@@bwsmyhero exactly. Most pictures look like they are from people who can afford an interior designer. I can’t.😑
@@JulieKhuu You’re the best! Thank you!☺️

Can you do rentals for small duplex and/or apartment spaces? All these photos are from magazines, not real life situations. 😂
But magazines also photograph actual homes . It’s for inspiration
I have waited a decade for an interior design channel such as this, that shares my aesthetic.
Very true buying expensive furnitures are worth it specially when it lasts for a long time and so gratifying when you hear comments from people.
As long as you love it, it will stand the test of time!
Is it possible to do away with rugs ?like if you are allergic,or have too hot a climate or live somewhere with higher atmospheric dust?can you skip rugs ?
I get ur point kanwal...:)thts exactly wht we in hot countries do...just cool tiles or marbles on th floor.
@@JulieKhuu thank you
@@JulieKhuu can you do a video about keeping separate spaces without using rugs
Julie I love the way you are real and honest about the common mistakes made in decorating a space. I've learned so much from you watching this video. Interior design is one of my passions and you have clarified some of the do's and don'ts. Thank you!
Thank you for watching Domino 🙏🏻☺️
Finding a sofa is my biggest issue right now. Finding a sofa that is the right scale, style and price is not easy. 😩
Not easy, but it’s imperative to the room’s success! Think modular seating so you can fit pieces together as per your needs S!
Try Wayfair. I got mine there and it didn’t cost a fortune!
So true!
With 2021 lockdown and spending more time at home. I've remodelled my home. Your video's have been my go to guide for tips. Thanks so much!

@@JulieKhuu Yes, I agree with you. and Thanks a lot for all you do, everything is super super duper!!!!
@@JulieKhuu , I agree with your statement about drawing attention to an item, thanks always.
Emily! Shouldn't the entertainment b each other and a good conversation, times spent together. I'd value that more then A TV sitting in a room
Totally confused about what 'style' I like, what to place where, what to buy and just started redoing my entire home. This was so helpful- great content, Julie. Thank you!
Check out my How to Create Your Dream Space series! I lay out my entire design process from start to finish so you can do it yourself MVH! 👍🏻
Thank you my dear!! You are so entertaining at the same time of imparting your knowledge. Always wanna listen to you! 👏🏻
