My old roommate did the best impression of the babbling child. It was his best Halloween costume and no one understood what was going on.

to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Ghost Stories

I happened to just show the rabbit scene to my girlfriend the other night and she thought it was hilarious, so back for another rewatch I go at some point in the relatively near future.

This dub was wild and extremely 2000s
Great video, you've got a fantastic voice for narration and gave me at least 1 giggle :^)

I found this at a convention in CT in 2001/2002? They were showing the whole show and I watched every episode. It was fantastic. Got the dvd when it came out and it's probably one of my most favorite animes. So damn funny and inappropriate and it goes to show how well something can do with fans.

My boyfriend showed this to me and I immediately fell in love, its so bad. Especially because I recognize a bunch of professional voice actors.
Edit: i love your voice and that was a good little skit.

Was truly the wild west of dubs, so weird to hear Edward Elric talk like this lol

hey, i really enjoyed this video and the urusei yatsura one! (sidenote: Based for all the sonic music, especially the tracks from unleashed)
i really think you should check out the sgt frog dub, its an interesting case that doesnt really get a lot of attention outside of us who are already fans of the original show. the original show and manga make heavy use of japanese pop culture references and wordplay, so it never really could take off in the west the way it did in japan. theres a decent amount of history with the attempts to adapt it to the west, with advs lost test pilots, to the series being picked up by funimation, and funimation releasing a test dub on youtube (i remember when it came out.... it was bad lol. really wanna see it again).
it kind of goes for a lite version of ghost stories' approach. sort of in between that and bbc urusei yatsura. the general vibe, plot and characterization is mostly in tact, but aside from adding american pop culture references, they were definitely given more leeway with what they could say than most dubs. jokes were added to dialogue where there wasnt any before, including meta humor. some lines you wouldnt believe WERENT from an abridged series if you viewed them out of context, a few that always come to mind:
    - in the intro to one episode, theres a little girl and her mom, and they have the "mom" say "i told you im not your mommy, youre just mine until we get the ransom"
    - fuyuki holding a baseball bat and thinking something to the effect of "i dont even know why i own this, i dont play basketball"
    - an alien pop star character essentially referring to actors snorting cocaine
its such an interesting timepiece. it hasnt aged the best (honestly, the actual sgt frog abridged is funnier and aged better), but some of these jokes come out of nowhere and its wild. ive always wanted to see a video covering the subject
thanks for reading this, youve earned a sub from me :)
edit: couple things i forgot to mention. one is that the show also had an animax dub, and it similarly sticks closer to the source material and isnt.... great to listen to. second is target audiences. the original manga was targeted towards teens, whereas the anime was targeted towards children (and made some changes, such as a character no longer being explicitly a lesbian). adv made 3 test dub pilots that i believe were one for kids, one for general audiences, and one for older anime fans. funimations dub similarly went in the approach for being for older anime fans as you can guess, though not being nearly as explicit as ghost stories.

This and the Funimation Dub of Shin Chan are 2 of the biggest sets I regret not buying physically. I know they'll never truly be lost media but I doubt they are long for this streaming world. Such a relic of their time.

Funny how out of all the jokes in DBZA, he had to used one of the EARLY episodes in the first season to find a bad joke. Every show will have jokes that flop, Even this show, I could take one of the poorer jokes and say "Oh look, its shit" too. But i know it doesnt mean it all sucks because there were far funnier stuff in this, just as there were DBZA.
My point here is, what a weird fucking comparison 🤣

    • @hassledvania
      @hassledvania  Год назад +2

I just went for the lowest hanging fruit, that running joke is well known for being really bad lol
So not that I went trawling for an example, its just the first to come to mind
But as I said, memes and in-jokes were a big problem with all abridging videos, a symptom of making a "show" on the internet. E.G. The boat guy jokes in the Naruto one, or the "cameos" in YGOA.
Something these joke dubs never had to deal with, since they were basically made in a bubble.
Also keep in mind this is a one-off point on how the two styles of parody compare, so I of course didn't spend time doing point-by-point analysis between the two.
Maybe one day I will do a "Downfall of DBZA" video in more depth, particularly how they got carried away and started referring to themselves as "Not a parody but an extension/improvement on the original". I highhkey cringe whenever they stop doing jokes and take themselves seriously. Not that its without its moments, "Catch me" is a top joke.
