I loved the way this movie was animated, it looks so good and creates such a eerie atmosphere throughout.
Movies just aren't made like this anymore.. I lament the decline of 2D animation.

Actually seeing the texture and brush strokes adds a lot to how cosy these films are

I remember first watching this movie as a kid at the daycare I went to and the movie was a hit with a lot of us even though it also terrorized us as well, it was awesome! And when I went back to the movie as a young adult, I found that I love the movie even more and it made me appreciate just how invested the people who worked on the movie treated it. The gothic horror elements, the atmosphere, the nice middle ground of being gritty and going "there" with Simone & Lena's tragic backstory, and having the gang feel in character but matured in a natural way (with them having normal jobs). It really was a lightning in a bottle moment for Scooby Doo with this movie. I'm pretty sure that it's unanimous that this movie is hands down the best Scooby Doo movie out of all of them, at least how I see it because I haven't come across anyone who dislikes this movie. And I'm not hating on Witch's Ghost or Cyber Chase but it's a bit of a shame that they didn't keep the kinda tone that this movie had , especially for Witch's Ghost where it totally would've fit. Not saying that the movie was bad but if they kept the horror elements in it, could you imagine what that would've looked like?
    Anyway, awesome retrospective review :D

Thanks for watching! You'll see in my next upload but I'd recommend Alien Invaders. Different vibe and strengths for sure, but I think the closest they came to recapturing Zombie Island's quality.

@@hassledvania Holy crap I totally goofed!, I meant "Alien Invaders", not "Cyber Chase" for the OG trilogy of these movies, my bad! I've seen Alien Invaders quite a bit growing up. I agree it's quite different in vibe but it still somewhat had that kid-friendly deepness quality that Zombie Island had like you mentioned.

I recall thia film being one of my fave VHS of the time. Normally, I'm not mouch fo a horror fan, but yet when it came to Scooby Doo (and later Courage), I found they were of the few horror-adjacent stuff I could enjoy, even if just because the monsters ended up being dudes in costumes. This one stood out because of both the somber tone it had as well as how scary the zombies felt, but even more scary was finding out that the zombies were not just monsters, but rather the victims of the Cat Cult (legit felt kind of sad when Jacque ended up being one of them as well, since he legit became one of my fave characters in this film, only for him to also be in cahoots with the soul eating cat cult).
Overall, I would say one of my favorite films, maybe followed by the next film in the series, and yes: as weird as it may be, I too enjoy the Ghoul School. (Winnie best girl)

Hey man found you from linkara ranting on your comment to not be so sensitive and review the lightbringer. Btw you are spot on like how mike from cinemassacre embraces his old cringe content and people dont give him as much shit.
I gotta ask are you an OneyPlays fan?

i liked the movie and bought it on ppv when it first came out. The scare factor was great, but the concept was not fully original. in an episode of the Scooby Doo show Dapne'e aunt would turn into a cat creeature and commit jewel robberies, Here in this movie the original element was the origin flashback, in which a small town was massacred by pirates. Who then were murdered by Symone, and crew. Some of the not so cool things . The gang complaining about their adventures getting boring? Are you kidding me, they were world traveling jet setters. Also missing was some of the background music that could enhance the mood of the story. I didnt see enough of the classic styles chases to me, Shaggy and scooby got plenty of them, in many episodes, Velma would join them,in the chases, that would have been great but is not here. little things like that but those are minor. As far as Dapne's Kung fu it was actually Ju Jitsu, and she mentions she knew it in 1976 in the Mamba Womba episode, later they tried to make her a martial arts expert, to counter her Damsel in distress label.
