    Its funny when people bash mechanics as non-educated wrench turners, and you start throwing chemistry terms at them that they don't understand explaining how a car works.

    subtle things can alter sleep patterns in kids, L, for example, some little guys are more sensitive to cold so wearing socks might is one idea, another is using some source of white noise to block outside traffic, people, and creaking house sounds. I used a fan, for example. Pillows and sheets/bedding can be a source of subtle irritation, too. For example, micro fibre sheets, down pillows (with lots of feathers, typically), or inadequately rinsed bedding - leaving residual detergent or fabric softener- is often a source of breathing congestion, wheezy runny nose discomfort which keeps the kids (and you) from getting good deep sleep. And make sure your window sills are free of molds and dust. Many folks dont realize that molds respire too and its their exhaled breath that our own bronchii react to.

    Hi Brian! It's Shep the Jewish me-chan-ic. Riddle me this "Batman". 3 years ago I replaced the engine in my 2000 S10 (2.2 liter) with a new GM crate unit,along with the injectors and pressure regulator (Sorensen),fuel pump (Carter) o2 sensors (AC Delco),and Cat (Walker). 1 1/2 years ago a p0420 code appeared. No vac or exhaust leaks. Fuel pressure is correct. No misfires and engine vacuum is rock steady at 18 inches. In short, the truck runs great. AutoZone replaced the cat at no charge. Last month the p0420 code reappeared.Same conditions. I ran a live data test. U/S o2 sensor readings bounced all over the place (as it should).D/S o2 readins did the same (as it shouldn't). I replaced the cat (again) and now the D/S reading are .73--.78 volts at highway speeds..43--.47 at idle. And ..50--.53 at around 35 to 40 mph. In other words , steady. All other readings are normal. My GM tech friends say I need a factory cat ($1000--$2000). My independent tech friends and my old auto tech instructor ( the 1 who taught me 30 years ago and is still teaching) say that's nuts and a Walker $179--$400)or any cat should be fine. Any ideas? Thanx and G-d bless. Shep.

    Best damn explanation on how catalitic converters work!
    I also remember the predator carburetor. It multi staged gasoline through values that would compress the gas through charcoal filters. The damn thing was almost 99% efficient in burning fuel. And was way cleaner at the exhaust then today.
    I still use a water injection system that can pass any inspection station probing.

    as far as the nightmares go Brian, what I find works for me personally, if I watch something that is creepy, then before I go to bed, I watch at least a few minutes of something funny, like a stand-up comedian, to give my mind different thoughts before I go to sleep.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  11 лет назад

    No. Cats can last a long time as long as the engine is efficient (relatively as far as autos go) and doesn't emit HC's CO's etc. When a car has problems burning these completely it heavily burdens the cat and burns it out. A plugged cat can inhibit proper performance and create back pressure at the exhaust port which can reduce fuel economy, but something was wrong with the car to make the cat fail to begin with.

    Test where the compression loss it BEFORE pulling the engine out by making sure all the valves are closed on that hole. (#6 by taking off the valve cover and inspecting cam position) Brace the crank so it won't move. Then run shop air into that hole and see where it comes out. The possibilities are.... radiator cap, oil cap, exhaust pipe, intake manifold. From there you can tell if it's valves, piston rings, cracked cylinder, head gasket etc.

    hey brian, just wanted to say that as a chemist, your explanations are spot on.
    one thing to mention about the "super carburetor", the vaporization of a liquid under a vacuum makes the liquid extremely cold very quickly which is probably a bad thing for your gas.
    cool video

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  11 лет назад

    Yes. The only difference is the thickness of the core walls within the honey comb. You have to maintain gas density or the temps and effectiveness suffers. So what they do is make the ceramic thinner so the hole count is higher. GREAT QUESTION!!!!

  • @tuvoca825
    @tuvoca825 9 лет назад +1

    You are spot on about the carbon monoxide thing. The CO bonds directly and irreversibly to the seat on the bus (on your blood) where the oxygen is supposed to be. That means oxygen can't get on the bus and get distributed where it needs to be in the blood. When CO bonds, the blood gets bright red but that "seat" becomes useless. Blood only has so many binding sites and oxygen deprivation can have term effects, even at lower levels. If it is severe enough it effects the brain and causes irreversible damage and restructuring in the brain. Very dangerous because it has no smell and is invisible. It happens with high temperature fires that aren't getting enough oxygen.

    The bounce and the cat are bed fellows, if the lean/rich bounce were more efficient then the cat would be less necessary. That oscillation is needed only because the feedback mechanisms lie on each side of the wander. BMW's new system is a more narrow channel to oscillate in. It can fire an injector several times as needed instead of just having a longer or shorter period. This means WAY more expensive and sensitive components, but better power and economy. AND a trend to anticipate.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  11 лет назад

    The hole or bung is for an oxygen sensor to be in. It's threaded. I removed the oxygen sensor when removing this cat. Otherwise there would be no hole to let air in. In reality, were that hole to be open it would leak exhaust which is hot and would work upwards into the cabin area. Exhaust is an expanding gas especially in the cat. It would move out as apposed to oxygen getting in.

    Recently with 6 cars in the family, I began to act on my instincts mechanics by suggesting and trying things in connection with my mechanic's expertise. For ex. the computer showed Malfunction on cat and 2 sensors. I had issues getting the wrong cats from autozone and oreillys for my friends mercury mountaineer too. I had to take them off measure the inlet and outlet and get a pipe reducer to weld in too to make the back one fit. One of her front cats was melted and the back one was clogged. Only one worked with the temperature check being 100 degrees hotter after the cat. How did you clean your cat? I have a dodge stratus I bought to fix up and my only cat on this thing is not passing the temp test. I could smell that it wasn't working. I'm just curious on how you cleaned it. I want to flush it out with acid just to see if it will work. I tried vinegar cuz I had it layin around. Nope. I tried carburetor cleaner also. Nope. Oh and by the way I think it is the most awesome thing in the world that you have mechanical instincts. I am honored to even hear of a female that will work on cars, wow!!! That made my heart throb, seriously. Sorry if i sounded sexist or like a creep, lol.

      Elizabeth Stenholt did you know you might as well get those codes when your car runs on too rich fuel mixture ? sunburn fuel causes catalytic to heat up and oxygen to read wrong readings :) your "expensive" problem could be caused by anything like spark plugs usually $5-10 each or better yet a broken intake vacuums line thats not even $5 =) find a good technician and stick to him because thats what a life is. on top of that you could demand that mechanic used a scope to verify if his finding is correct or not

    Nightmare thing, that's tough. How old are your kids?
    I've noticed with my own (4yrs) that he wasn't afraid of ANYTHING until he saw transformers. It seems that "bad guys" are of course inevitable but focused on WAY TOO MUCH in American culture. Take all of the skulls for example. Skulls should not be a fashion trend. My son came to me & asked if the skull on his lego man was a bad guy... that sh!t looked pretty evil to me so I told him it was. We sanded it off & solved that problem.
    Sanding subconscious manifestations from your dreams are a bit more difficult. Polish it over with bedtime rituals of security & maybe even a spray bottle labeled "nightmare spray" to wash away the dreams if they wake up. YOU believing it will help & reassuring your child IT WORKS will strengthen the effect.
    Our ritual starts with my wife & I telling our son that we're always very proud of him & that he brings our family great honor. Then we visualize the cells in his body glowing with a golden field around them. A golden bubble of light that protects from all the bad & radiates all of his golden glowing goodness.
    He's never been sick, never had an earache, no skin breaking procedures, & is one happy little man. Our own thoughts & energy can greatly affect the outcome of our offspring both for the good or the bad. Let the kids know that they are in control of their dreams & eventually they will overcome the negative force driving the nightmares.
    Hope that helps
    ~Mike

    Kids & Nightmares: As long it has nothing to do with teething; 1.- Make sure you secure all your doors & windows and have your alarm system ON. 2.- Supper is served at 6pm & bedtime is 8pm.( =curfew). 3.-explain them what stars, galaxies, etc are and entertain them with hand shadows..teach them to count between lighting & thunder. 4.- (hardest) teach them that you're always there with them (tip: have'm feel their own heartbeat). Hope it works.

    for kids, it depends on what the nightmare is, reading 20 minutes of a story book before bed time helps, if they have a nightmare of a monster or something like that having them draw you a picture of it as they tell you about it then kind of go through it with them if they say it has scary teeth explane how it is not so scary and make them laugh about it like saying that monster dont brush or floss

    If you do research on "peak oil" it suggests that we have used more than half of the worlds oil reserves. They say all the "easy oil" or the oil that is easy to get to has been depleted. Some argue and say oil dry wells when re visited produce again and are no longer dry. It could be that it's like a flashlight with dead batteries. You can turn it on and it works again.... but not for long. I take any oil news with a grain of salt.

    That story reminded me of the two Americans that invented the traffic light.. I can't remember their names but they were a father and son and they apparently had build an engine that ran off water.. they had witnesses that saw them fill up the car from a lake and it ran like a normal engine somehow.. They disappeared.. oh and the US government apparently just stole the the traffic light idea and they didn't get any credit for it.. I think their names were Garrett or something like that.. Then years after I read this I was hitch hiking down the east coast of Australia and got picked up by a farmer who had a genius son, he was about to start university at age 11.. he said to his father that he could get the lawn mower to run off water and his dad gave him the lawn mower.. I never heard what happened to him but probably disappeared too.. oil just makes too many people fat to have these water engines running around all over the place

    I'm still contemplating your cool oxbow lake analogy, and now you've posted another winner.
    One of the interesting things I recently learned (from scannerdanner) is that the cat requires instantaneously changing ratios, to be sure there is enough CO to allow it to work properly. CO is actually used to make the cat do it's thing, so O2 sensor signals have to cause a lean/rich bounce.

    Not really. It only does for about a minute or two on start up. It actually helps oxidize the residual fuel because the engine is rich when you first start it. And there is no more oxygen in the exhaust. So the air pump oxidizes the fuel in a process called after burning the exothermic reaction helps to heat up the cat.

    +John Smith , Pagan Sunburn suggested checking for vacuum leaks and i agree but also inspect all of your electrical connections as well. it may sound strange to you but more often than not a driveability issue can be traced straight to the most basic and often skipped step in diagnostics. as far as using spray solvents to check for vacuum leaks, theres another way. use a small propane bottle just barely opened and at the same places. if your idle increase youve found a leak. some vacuum tees are temperature switched and wont allow vacuum thru certain hoses on a cool engine, and spraying brake kleen or carb cleaner on a hot engine is as smart smoking around an open gas tank. this is why i advocate using popane to check for vac leaks

    briansmobile1, great vid as per your usual. id like to add if i may, some personal observations from 30 years of repairing cars. the threaded bung on the side of the converter has been around a very long time. it started out as a way to inject fresh air into the converter to burn off unburned hydrocarbons via an air pump on the front of the engine [remember fords smog pumps that always failed?]. even though i have never seen an O2 sensor in that spot, it doesnt mean that its never been done. keep up the good work

    They say cats help get rid of the hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are just a fancy name for unburned fuel. Why they don't call it unburned fuel? My guess is people would get pissed off if they found out they were sending 40% of their fuel out the tail pipe unburned. On vapor carbs. If you burn straight stiochiometric mixture, it would be too hot for your engine. They use extra gas as a coolant to keep from melting your aluminum pistons. If you look at water injection, that essentially means you lean your engine to stiochiometric and then inject water into your cylinder to cool it. Very cool concept, i just don't have the money or time right now to play around with it.

    Great job Brian! Your amongst the best on the Tube. My wife and I have 4 kids of or own and have had 70 foster kids over 7 years. I was so spoiled bc she dealt with all the difficult things like diapers, nightmares (same thing to me). Anyway I see a lot of advise here about limiting "electronic time". No easy task but it really helps. Keep the vids coming, please know they are appreciated. Really wished I was with you and your bro diving!!!! That was beautiful on many levels.
    Take care

    If your kids are having nightmares, it may be a sign of spiritual attacks. If you're a Christian, I advise you to pray with them mornings and nights (about 10 mins each). If you're not a Christian, I encourage you to accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Savior. Thanks for the nice video-- very informative. I gave you a thumb up.

    On my Hemi Magnum I started getting the engine light and it would shut down. Sometimes it would run like crap right before that. 165,000 miles and that was the first time the engine even had a hiccup. I did park on soft turf and ended up getting stuck and MAYBE got some mud on the catalytic converters. Or MAYBE the O2 sensors got messed up. I call BS on both, because the O2 sensors are not in a place where they would get hit by a high center situation. It wasn’t sitting that low. But couldn’t come up with any other reason for either to be damaged. I also have a bumper to bumper lifetime extended Chrysler warranty. So I take it in. Mind you this car is maintained. New spark plugs at 100,000 miles even though it ran fine. Injector clean just after, just cause. Everything but wear items is covered. So the dealership tells me I need new catalytic converters, new plugs, and new coils. The coils were covered,so I didn’t care. Plugs were expensive (a wear item) enough that I wanted to do them myself but I caved, even though I really didn’t believe they were bad OR the coils. The O2 sensors were totally believable, and matched the symptoms and the OBD codes. The car ran smooth and strong until every once in a while, mostly in stop and go traffic, it would run rough for a few seconds and shut off. Then it would start right back up again and run like a champ as if nothing had ever happened. I always though ignition coils either worked or didn’t. Why would it run so well most of the time only to shut off on random occasions? The O2 sensors were also covered. But the ONLY major component NOT covered is the catalytic converter. Of course. $2000. I believed the O2 sensors could be bad, and even maybe the coils. They said a rich condition could quickly ruin the catalytic converters. An engine misfire, maybe caused by the plugs, coils, or O2 sensor, could have ruined the CCs. But I think I got defrauded. I asked the tech why it would run great until suddenly shutting off, then fire right back up like nothing ever happened. He said it was because when the catalyst heats, it swells enough to at some point cause blockage, and then when the engine shuts off, the catalyst shrinks very quickly, enabling smooth running again. So the big a question is, has anyone EVER HEARD OF CATALYST SWELLING AND SHRINKING THAT rapidly? And so much as in size difference? If clogged cats make a car sluggish, always, every time, there is no way they were clogged. It ran great. And bad spark plugs won’t shut the car down, then immediately let it run great, and then shut down again at any random time, 5min or 2 days later, and under varying conditions. I do understand coils can be weak or not in good shape and hurt performance and mileage. But the car got normal mileage and ran as strong as it ever had. Exhaust flow out of tailpipe seemed the same as always, and I even found a video I had made of the exhaust sound at the tailpipes when the car was new, and compared the two and they sounded identical. Opinions? The swelling thing seemed like a stretch, but I was told that if I did t do the cats now that later on if something failed because of the bad cats that any warranty work related to that would be voided. I felt like I was pressured into it because they felt like they needed to actually get me to pay some real money. Seems like they are trying to frustrate me out of the vehicle. I even asked them point blank and they laughed and said no. I’ll get over paying for the plugs, but I think they ripped me off with the cats. And guess what? A similar problem is back and they can’t fix it, yet. They are playing dumb to get me to give up on the car.
    What do y’all think about the claim of swelling and shrinking with the cats?

    Hey Brian, it's Shep again. I did what you said and replaced the rear 02 sensor (s10 2.2) with GM unit . I also installed a set of iridium plugs.The good news, MPG and performance improved! The bad news po420 code still keeps coming back. As I said ,no leaks (vacuum or exhaust) found. Ft 02 is a Bosch -rear 02 is AC Delco-cat is a Walker. The truck runs great and this is not a major concern, but it still bugs me and I would like to correct it. Se Ya! and G-d bless.

    god bless Tom Ogle! didn't he get like 130 miles a gallon in a 60's cruiser? my first project ever was a '79 bronco. it would go 40 mph uphill and got 8 mpg. $2200 later, I put in a clean basic simple powertrain and threw away a tote full of hoses pumps evap canisters. It would get 20-22mpg, hit 120mph...HARD

    If you have a pre 1996 model vehicle with throttle body injection you could run cleaner and longer with a bubbler setup to your intake. California got this contraption passed because LA is in a valley and they smogged out, unless the winds worked in their favor.

    Brian, love your vids, but wanted to mention that the Tom Ogle 100mpg car thing is one of many "magic mileage" stories that center on an inventor coming up with something so incredibly efficient that someone offs them to keep it under wraps. The presumed killers in these stories tend to range from oil company to auto manufacturers to rival inventors, but they all have one thing in common; the patent is out there but the touted mileage has never been objectively proven.
